Welcome to a 24 hours with a 1 year old vlog! Today is one of my days off with Rowan so I'll show you what a 'typical' full day of me parenting looks like when we've got no other plans. AND you're getting a sneak peek of Rowan's new room before that video comes out! Also, where do you fall on the "a few" vs "several" debate? 😂 Let me know in the comments!

As someone with 0 kids I felt exhausted watching this, so much admiration for parents I don’t know how you do it! My jaw dropped open when you said it wasn’t even half 11 in the morning and you were already back from the errands with plans for the rest of the day, I’d be the one needing a nap 😂

In re. the throwing - Rowan's in a developmental period where throwing is super appropriate behavior! What often works well is having something that's made for throwing (e.g. a basket of soft balls in the living room) and inviting him to play with those throughout the day to "get his throwing out," so to speak. Then, if he goes to throw food, gently catch his arm and say, "I can't let you throw food! We can throw balls after breakfast," and then bring him back over to the balls after the meal is through.
@lindsayrigby707
@lindsayrigby707 Год назад
Also - in re. the food, children's growth slows SO considerably at a year! So it makes sense that he doesn't need as many calories now as he did when he was shooting up like a weed as an infant. Definitely something to chat with your pediatrician about if you're worried, but most kiddos are really good at eating what they need!
@valarya

I've found that the throwing is a game to watch you pick it up. So when the throwing of the thing is inappropriate (like food) it's more let them know gently that throwing food is not OK and mommy will not pick it up - and then don't pick it up. If you don't pick it up the game is over! lol

HAHA omg Hannah I just realised when I heard you singing ‘cleaning Rowan’s hands’ - that’s why I now sing that tune while doing hand wipe time! 😂 You were doing that when you were over last, I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how that got in my head I thought I must have heard three blind mice somewhere. Loveee the paint in his room. Our Ren is in a similar daddy mood wanting to be walked BEFORE boob this past week … when I manage to get her asleep alone I’m like ‘where’s my golden statue!?’ 😂 Pan could survive on AIR and breast milk until he was weaned and I was always stressed on days he wouldn’t eat, too. You’re doing an amazing job 🥹🥰💚 A new 5 year diary…the end of another era holy shit!

As a mama of a one year old (and my second kid), can say that babies and toddlers kind of just vibe with eating. The best thing my peds has ever explained to me that if he's behaving his usual self on the whole, then he's probably doing what he needs to be doing with eating/sleeping/etc. and eating as his body tells him he's hungry. Babies especially have all kinds of growing going on, and their bodies know what to do. It can feel so out of control to learn to listen to cues. You're doing great! Playing with food is really important for their learning to eat! Throwing food on the floor is part of that -- but also, it's great to redirect/take away food being thrown as a reasonable/realistic consequence of the throwing of food. Love this video. :)

Mum to an almost 2 year old still breast-feeding toddler. 1 year old mealtimes have aged me at least 5 year I think 😂 In the past fews months I've been trying to embrace the fact that he will eat when he is hungry and that our job is to provide healthy options frequently. I was worried that he enjoyed his milk a bit too much, but he has started wolfing down his meals when hungry:) sending good vibes and nerves of steel, I understand the frustration

With the throwing food, something that worked for us was having a 'no thank you bowl' (think I got the idea from Big Little Feelings?). It took a while of but now she'll play with her food as she used to, then gradually move the bits she wants to throw into her no thank you bowl instead. Doesn't always work but often! *Slightly* less messy and so worth it hearing her say 'no thank you' in her little toddler voice 😂

i love your baby-related videos, and the fact that you still give Rowan privacy. i've learned a lot from you about motherhood, and it makes me feel less scared about having children myself one day. as someone who didn't have the best start in life, i don't know what healthy parenting looks like, and i'm scared i'll fall into the same cycle, but knowledge is power. i'm only 22, so if you could make a video about how you prepared for having children, like how much money you have to earn and save, whether there's any classes or books that helped you, how you knew that your partner was the right one to raise a family with etc, i would be so so grateful.

Throwing is just fun! I just don’t pick anything back up until we clean up the meal. They grow out of it eventually because it becomes less fun the less you give them back the things they throw. I find it’s better to end the meal if everything is getting thrown off. Every season has its challenges and fun!

tip: when children start throwing things on the floor, mealtime is over. say something to the tune of 'i can see you're not hungry anymore as you're throwing your things on the floor, you must be done' and get them down from the table. they probably are reasonably full at this point, as they probably wouldn't be chucking it and would focus on eating it if they were still hungry. after a few meals of doing this, they'll likely learn that if they actually want to eat it, throwing it on the floor is a sure way of it being taken away. if they're doing it at the beginning of meals, try explaining every time that food doesn't go on the floor as it makes the food dirty and it makes a mess, before returning to the rule of mealtime being over. it feels a bit mean to cut mealtime short, but unless there's any medical concerns around them eating a certain amount, a few times of mealtime being over before they're entirely full won't cause them any harm. remember it's developmentally totally normal for them to want to experiment with what happens when things fall from a height, and maybe see if there's some way you can implement experimenting with gravity into their play, i.e. taking some objects to the park and seeing what happens when you drop them from the top of the climbing frame. explaining this during mealtimes can also help, i.e. 'i see you're really interested in dropping things right now, but during mealtime our food needs to stay on the table. let's go to the park later and have a go at dropping some things'.

It's super normal for him to throw food at that age. He's learning about gravity, different textures, and starting to make more of his own choices! As long as he's still growing and not losing weight, (and it seems like he's in a normal weight range), it's likely totally normal. Babies go through phases where they don't eat as much, and then they'll have a growth spurt and it'll seem like there's not enough food in the whole world lol

She said it’s easier with babies starting at 6 months old so you are in an ideal place. Getting proper sleep again is so worth it. And now my baby knows how to go to sleep on his own as well. My son is 3 months older than Rowan and he was exactly the same with eating around his first birthday. At around 13 months he went through an insane growth spurt where he was eating food 24/7 (one night awake from 12-4 demanding pasta and bagels) and now at 15 months I would say he eats a normalish amount but it still varies day to day. He was teething the other week and didn’t eat anything apart from yogurt for 48 hours. As long as he has energy and you or medical professionals aren’t worried about weight gain/growth then he is fine! You guys are doing a great job
@jkroyzer
@jkroyzer Год назад
Hi! U guys are so adorable, ur doing such a good job parenting. So I do work as a dietitian in the US, and I think ur doing a great job with feeding! And there are probably more specific guidelines for one year olds, but typically the advice for children is to offer a meal or snack every 3-4 hours during the day, that meal or snack consisting of a source of fiber, source of protein, and source of fat (so like a veg, some chicken or bean, and some cheese or hummus) and rly let the child lead the way on how much of each item they want. Ur doing a rly great job!! Everyone’s appetite varies from day and to day and week to week, and kids are no different. If u do notice tho any like coughing or choking during eating, or spitting food out, basically that he isn’t able to handle swallowing the food, I would suggest taking him in because there might be some issue with swallowing that needs addressing. But from what I saw, he looks like he’s just being a little fussy, which is totally normal :) of course I’m not ur GP, but this is just an outside perspective. Also he is getting breastfed, so he’s still getting calories, protein, fat etc from that source so it’s not like he is starving! Anyway, love ur videos!!!

I wish we had a secondhand shop for children's stuff here! There are only general charity shops that don't have much selection. It makes it hard to shop secondhand unless you want to go round 10 different shops to find even one thing in the right size. In my experience with our kid, she often went off solid food while still breastfeeding. Once we stopped, her eating was way more consistent.

You were pretty close with the Shadow and Bone theory. I am a massive fan of the show and have been getting into the books. The Six of Crows duology is on a whole other level than Alina’s three books, especially when it comes to character design. They are also much more diverse and the author herself said that it was after the Alina’s books that she felt truly like she could write what was closer to her heart - a story decidedly NOT about chosen ones with morally grey characters. If you end up reading the duology (or even just after you finish the show), would love to hear your thoughts (this is why I miss the pleasure throve series a bit) :) All the best!

Our babes must have very similar birthdays. As mine just turned one as well. My husband and I reached our limit after a year of short sleep and waking up multiple times in the night to feed the baby. We just spent 1.5 weeks doing night weaning (4 nights) and sleep training. Knock on wood but he now only feeds in the daytime and we have set nap time windows and bedtime. That helps to make sure that he sleeps through the night. Having a set time when the baby will nap is freeing and exhilarating. Now that he knows how to go to sleep on his own, it makes everything so much easier. It really is worth it to consult a sleep training expert just to get a full night of sleep and know when you can get stuff done during the day. :)

In regards to the shadow and bones, I think it's because all of the Alina sections are 3 whole books shoved into one season whereas the six of crows is a single book in one season. In comparison the first season alinas section was just one book in one season. Plus they completely changed the outcomes of several characters to the point that they killed off some characters who live and keep some characters around that shouldn't be involved anymore. The second season was much less accurate to the books.

I work in early years and first of all, throwing is normal. My approach at work and with my own child is finding opportunities to fulfill the need, and also setting loving but firm boundaries. Secondly, it's common for babies who are puree weaned to go through reduced eating as more solids are introduced. I don't know if thats relevant to you, but its a whole new skill and it's difficult! If it does resonate, and he's not getting frustrated, he's getting enough. He breastfeeds so it's not a worry like it could be for a formula family.

I agree with what you said abou Shadow and Bone, Alina's storyline was kinda weird. After watching the show I read all of the books, and the books are soooo much better when it comes to Alina's storyline! Also, I have a 6 month old son, so it's super nice to see a relatable vlog, I am also in a similar situation to you (having my own business, going back to work 3 months after having the baby and now working part time). I love watching your vlogs and, well, all of your content!

If it makes you feel better, Rowan will probably switch at some point and be ALL about mummy. 😊At least my older child did that a few times when he was under two.

You might want to look into some form of sleep training if the sleep routine is very stressful for you guys. We sleep trained both of our kiddos (4 1/2 and 1 1/2), and swear by it. Some of the methods sound harsh (like Cry It Out), but there are ones that are more gentle, if that's your vibe. And different methods work better for different kiddos too. Definitely do your research to find what will work for your family. We're pretty gentle, so at most, we usually wait 5-10 mins to see if they calm down on their own before we go in and offer comfort. I hate to offer unsolicited advice, because parenting is so personal, and no parent needs a bunch of people telling them what they should or shouldn't do. But I was so thankful to the parenting friend that lent me a sleep training book. Even if you just take a couple things away from one book, it was seriously some of the most helpful parenting education I received. Definitely helps give you more and more reliable recharge and adult time, which is necessary! :)

Most childcare experts do not advise using cry it out anymore, and it really should be unnecessary. Gentler methods of sleep training can be as effective without that element anyway.

non-baby related, but have you considered putting the cutting board on the table when you use it? would be more comfortable, give you more control, and help with future shoulder and wrist pain.

if you can aford to get his shoes new rather than second hand, that would be ideal for his feet. Normally getting second had clothes is better for the environment and not a problem for the child at all. Shoes are a bit different, because new shoes mould to the shape of the wearer's foot over time. Second hand shoes will have already moulded to the shape of the previous child's foot, so Rowan won't be getting quite the same level of suport as he would from shoes that have only been worn by him and are moulded to his feet. When I was little we didn't have much money and got as many of my clothes second had as possible, but my mum always made sure we got my shoes new so that my feet had the best chance of developing well.

Re Shadow and Bone/Six of Crows, having read the source material, Hannah you’re right! At least in my opinion the Alina trilogy was pretty mediocre, I was not invested at all, but the Crows books were excellent!

All babies go through a phase of throwing shit on the floor from their high-chairs 😂😂 - I learned that the best way to stop it is to NOT pick up what they threw (until later). The whole game is to watch you pick it up, so if you don't pick it up the game is over!!! Good luck 😘

Oh, hard disagree about the meaning of "several"! For me, "a couple" and "a few" both mean 2-3, "several" typically means 3-4 (but all three could refer to anything between 2-4 in a pinch), and " a good few" could be 5-6 or maybe 7, but "several" is definitely less than "a good few". In fairness, I'm not a native English speaker, but I am an advanced one and have lived in English-speaking countries, so I feel like my vote still counts. :P Also, love that pajama on you! Doesn't really seem like a spring color (or is it?) but it harmonizes wonderfully with your features! And the jumpsuit is excellent too, really suits your personality/proportions! (Also, they say people often look like their romantic partners - both because we tend to choose people who like us/our parents subconsciously, but also because spending a lot of time together invariably makes some things rub off on each other - but I'm not sure I've ever noticed that between you and Dan quite so much as I did in this video. You guys seem like a great team!) Also, perhaps it might interest you that lately I've noticed this channel is one of the ones I get most excited about watching. There's a good chunk (ha, another vague term lol) of channels that I watch most videos from, but I think MoreHannah, Vlogbrothers/MoreHank, Weezywaiter, Melanie Murphy and Micarah Tewers are currently the only ones where I will watch a new video as soon as I've noticed it's come out almost all of the time.

Ahhh food throwing 🙃🙃🙃 yeah you can’t really stop that, it just kind of turns into them pushing too away or slyly feeding it to the dog, my suggestion is a big tarp and a decent hoover, shark ones are very good 😊
@SamWest96
@SamWest96 Год назад
You absolutely can stop that, very gently, lovingly and firmly. To not stop it is a perfectly acceptable choice, but far from the only option. It would fall under the permissive parenting umbrella, so there must be at least 2 more options available
