We all have our own camping horror stories. From losing valuable materials to struggling to construct a tent, camping isn’t always easy. Still, people love to go camping. And, I guess it’s easy to see why. You’re outside in nature, away from all the hustle and bustle and stresses of normal, everyday life.
It can be very relaxing for your body and mind. But, let’s face it, being isolated out in the wilderness can be extremely dangerous. Since you’re often miles from the closest hospital or completely without cellphone service, you do put your life at risk. On top of safety issues, you have to deal with exposure to the elements, deadly wild animals, and, perhaps worst of all, other humans with less than noble intentions. So, with that said, pack up your gear, here are 25 camping horror stories that’ll make you appreciate hotels, and maybe even encourage you to rethink your plans for your next family vacation to the great outdoors.

Wood Ants, Wild Boar in the Forrest of Dean, a raucous Murder of Crows at 4 in the morning will scare the crap out of anyone. Nosy Badgers and Foxes poking their heads into the tent looking for food, the snuffling waking one suddenly in the dark. If in Scotland, bloody Midges and Red Dear bucks in the rutting season. We have our own scary and uncomfortable camping trips.

@@S.p.a.c.e.C.o.w.b.o.y We have one poisonous snake, the Adder, found on dry heathland in the South and Southwest, not normally fatal to healthy Adults if treated quickly. As for Wolves there are plans to release some into the wild in the Highlands of Scotland in the next few years to help keep the Red Dear population under control. Have you met a Scottish Wild Cat, a bit like an over sized moggy, looks like a small Lynx but very ferocious. An endangered species due to cross breeding with feral domestic cats. We also have a couple of venomous Spiders, again not normally fatal, the False Widow is one. The Wolves along with the Beaver, Golden Eagle and other birds of prey are all part of the scheme to bring back former native wildlife that was hunted to extinction in the past to redress the balance of nature.

I was stationed in Alaska in the 80s and the first time I went camping there, I walked a few feet off a path that circled the lake at the area pitched my sleeping bag and had a good nights sleep. The next morning when I met up some friends who were in campers and cabin tents on the other side of the lake they just laughed and said I was really lucky, it turns out a blonde grizzly bear was using that same path that morning and because it was a blonde grizzly and they hadn't seen one before they took pictures, when they had the pictures developed it showed the bear on the path and me sleeping just a few feet away.

I once had a large bear about 4 inches away. I was sitting in tent talking with a friend when we heard foot steps.. and we could tell it was a quaddroped.. scared we froze. It came up right behind me and started sniffing me..through the tent, so close I could feel the heat from his body. He soon lost interest and went to dig in someone's garbage.. I was so glad he didn't explore any farther in tent..

Yeah, I have one from rock-climbing on Friday the 13th. I go to Devil's Lake, WI with a group of teen girls right before I entered high school - one of the activities that we could do is rock-climb on the mountain-like area. Those that didn't rock-climb got to watch. I didn't rock-climb and I'm glad I didn't. The only girl afraid of spiders was attacked after putting her hand in a cervice that was a spider swarm's nest. The spiders swarmed her and the only reason she didn't fall from half-way up and end up dying was the rock-climbing equipment, which she got tangled in while freaking out. It took a hour to two hours to get her down, and she was screaming the entire time. Basically, that's enough for me to Nope on Rock-climbing period!

I'm Australian when i say someone in my camping party woke up to find an eastern brown snake asleep with them. Brown snakes are very aggressive and very venomous, we contacted the rangers who came and took care of the bunkmate. on another camping trip had a mob of kangaroos bounce through the campsite trashing it, having a kangaroo bounce on your gut at 5am isn't. fun. on a school, camp had a tent full of girls held hostage by a large huntsman spider, they are not dangerous just big and hairy they eat the deadly ones, i think the spider did it for shits and giggles because ever time the girls moved in the tent it waved its legs at them, but happily climbed the bit of paper and climbed off on a nearby tree

Woke up once with my hair stuck to the ground by frost, and not 1 but 3 Eastern Diamondbacks in my sleeping bag with me. They probably had went in there, because of the cold temp that night. Camping with family 100 miles off the interstate, in the 80's, when a man wandered in with nothing but the clothes he had on. He sat, legs crossed and arms out in front of him crossed, in front of the fire pit in the campsite next to us. He came and asked for a match, built a fire and sat again. About an hour later, he came and asked for a piece of bread. Went back to his fire and ate it. About an hour later, he asked about a trail and after getting directions, he left. Three days later we found out he had escaped from a mental institute, where he was incarcerated for murder, rape and car theft. He had hitch-hiked to the campground and was caught the next day hitch-hiking back to the interstate. I was 16 at the time and had my own tent. I didn't sleep much that trip. The one who had it worse than I did was my friend who came to camp with us, and showed up just in time to hear the camp host tell us the real deal on the guy....she looked ready to go home right then and there.

Not exactly a horror story, but years back I used to climb Mt Snowdon on a reasonably regular basis. One particular day the weather turned very bad very quickly (not exactly uncommon) and we had to camp out on the mountain overnight in a blizzard. The big concern was that we'd told friends "downstairs" that we'd be back at a set time and in the days before mobile 'phones, the usual response to a failed return is to contact Mountain Rescue. Fortunately they'd been "on the beer" and forgot, so we were saved the embarrassment of being "rescued" unnecessarily.

Because I love to camp, I've got several stories: Camping in NE Iowa, we had thunderstorms overnight. My kids woke me saying water had come in their tent. We put them in the car to sleep & went back to bed. Next morning, we find their tent was in about a foot of water. When we turned on the radio, we heard Des Moines' water had gone out. Turned out the Flood of 93 had started. That same summer, we were camping with a group of friends in Missouri. We woke up to the top of our tent in our faces. We then heard one of our friends yelling. We got out of the tent to find his tent ROLLING across the campground, with him still in it! The radio the next day said the thunderstorm had produced 90 mph winds. A few years ago, we set up our tents near a lake. At dinnertime, we started noticing quite a few large hornets. We were not even 50 feet away from a nest hanging from a tree that was larger than a basketball!

We went camping in the Adirondacks (a national state park in upstate New York) and on clear nights our radio could pick up the Mets games. We were listening to the game and I suggested we put away our coolers. My husband said he would after the game. He forgot when he went to bed. We were awakened by loud noises. Our dogs hid, but our noise scared away whatever was on our site. In the morning we found our site trashed. We then confirmed we were visited by a bear when we found a pile of trash on the other side of the creek. The bear had stolen pepperoni, Blues Clues applesauce, hot chocolate mix and a large box of goldfish (that had claw marks puncturing the side of the when we found it).

Many years ago, my then boyfriend and I went camping in New Hampshire and Maine. The second night in Maine, we were awakened by a loud snort just outside our tent. After a few minutes of "Should we look?" "No, let's wait; maybe it will go away," he unzipped the tent a few inches. To our surprise (and terror!), a large muzzle pushed its way inside. It turned out that the people a few campsites down from ours had brought their horses with them. One had gotten loose and decided to go exploring. We laughed about it later, but at the time it definitely wasn't funny.

Years ago when I was in the army stationed in Germany. My partner and I were camped out in our field ambulance on manuvers in the woods. My male partner needed to empty his bladder and wandered of to find a secluded tree. Several minutes later I hear him come crashing through the woods screaming "open the door...open the door!!". When I did he dived in with his pants open and dragging. A split second after he slammed the door shut our truck was slammed so hard it rocked back and forth. Above my partners panicked panting I heard unmistakable grunting of a wild boar. I teased him about that the whole time we were partnered.

Once I went camping on a good friend's ranch. While cooking my evening meal over the campfire, a female mountain lion and her 3 little ones decided to investigate. They all just sat there and we shared mutual back and forth stares for almost half an hour before they all just walked away. I wasn't too concerned, though, I was in my small camper trailer. Still, it was interesting that they just sat there and watched me.

I was out camping one time and had a bunch of partiers as neibhores... They had children that they didn't tend to or feed. They got reported to the authorities, but nothing happened. Soon that night the children came to my camp and I fed them and gave them a place to sleep. The adults weren't happy when they awoke to skunks around there camp. They went after the left overs I put there.

#20 I remember I was out at the beach one time camping with my parents, uncle, and my parents friend. I had gone to bed early. Then I hear my parents freaking out about something in the camp. I didn't know until morning that a coyote had strolled into our campsite. My dad had a revolver with him, but then the coyote left us alone. Still though, to hear about that is crazy.

My father, uncles, and I were camping in upstate New York. Sitting around the fire trading stories, we heard a coyote howl in the distance. None of us were concerned, that is until we heard SEVERAL answering calls, no more than 20 feet away. The beasts had no interest in us, thankfully, most likely due to our fire, but we did hear what must have been a particularly large pack race by our site, headed towards the first howler. Rather creepy, I must say.

Hey Mike you can have the cute little black and white skunks, Amazon has this spray called "skunk off". My dog love skunks but he's huge and gets sprayed alot. Also the log is a totem of Odin the wonder. Someone made it there to watch over travelers.

my stepmom loves going out into the yard with a flashlight to see the spider eyes reflect back at her. I went camping once well duck hunting but my dad and I camped out, it was so cold I never wanted to go camping again.

"I bet they appreciate hotels" Until while driving to the hotel, the bus skids, loses control and the luggage doors swing open and are lost in the mud as they continue to slide away. "I bet the appreciate staying at home for the holidays"

When I was 3 or 4 years old my parents took me camping in the Great Smokey Mountains. My parents had some hotdogs and burgers on the grill when a black bear showed up and started eating the food. Then the black bear got on to our table and started eating everything on there. When I ran away I left my favorite stuffed bunny. I started crying because I thought the bear was going to eat my bunny. When a park ranger and our neighbors found out why I was crying. They distracted the bear and my dad retrieved my bunny.
