Some are closed some aren’t it depends on the state and whatever bullshit they’re trying to pull and yes, everybody knows that 90% of the way stations are closed unless you’re in certain states or certain highways
As an owner operator I am all for CMV enforcement, but I really wish more enforcement would be given to the general motoring public as well. I see people with phones glued to their faces, speeding, cutting off trucks, passing in no passing zones, and the list goes on. If we are going to enforce laws lets enforce them all!
Yup, doing primarily over size myself I can't count the number of times people will damn near run into my load or the ditch trying to get around me when I need more then one lane instead of waiting just 1 minute. I only get mad when they come close to hitting my load tho, that hits me in the pocket other wise I drive expecting shit driving behaviour from everyone.....especially other truckers sad as it is to say. I'm only staying out on the road long enough to pay off the rest of my truck and my new rgn now then I done with the crap.
@@NoLuckGamer1 cause he should have made himself visible at night with hazard lights, high visibility vest (not cool looking), or had common sense and stayed aware of his surroundings by keeping a eye on traffic. This was preventable on both sides.
At least if you're going to drive truck long haul you're going to be on the road day and night. Usually. I did. I made my best time at night less people on the road and during the daytime hours that's when I negotiated pickup and delivery. I don't believe what's going on in the country right now. A breakdown of the government is a breakdown of law enforcement in the liberal left like the hippies of the 60s In their drug crazed attitude of piss poor governance.
Problem is u guys apparently don't know how to drive . U have to remember how much weight u have and how they don't respect they rules . Aka missing weight stations .Every drives like a idiot in mass. Me personally if I'm at a red light and turning right . I will wait till it's green. Every day some retard is behind pushing fast than can drive. Especially with big trucks or big box's trucks . Problem is there only a few trucks they do pride them self on there driving skills. They keep other people safe in mind .
They were talking about Massachusetts only. The law is no overweight overnight period. Doesn't matter what it is in the state you operate or live in, this what applies for Massachusetts. Don't like it, well come and try to get it changed.
That goes without saying but folks pull over constantly now days when they could simply go another mile or two and pull over on the exit ramps which is much safer
Is there any truth to rumours often overheard during trips to MA that; "break-down lanes" in Massachusetts were officially converted to become "travel-lanes" , thus no stopping for any reason at anytime? Related trivia: Similarly, why are there, and every increasing officially intentionally forced: Choked-roads? Bulging curbs-walks at intersections? Bike lanes that direct path into vehicle travel paths and vice-verso? Why are road surfaces prevalently rough, ruts, bumps, pot holes, structures elevated, etc so are increase wear & tear, damaging to occupants, bike drivers, vehicles, tires, pedestrians, along with human kidneys? Why are avoidance spaces aka "Plan B" being eliminated from roads, highways, intersections, etc? Why are there deluge of signs, posts, trees, planters, lights, flashing light signs, bollards, etc at intersections causing busy visuals thereby creating obstacles from both pedestrians, bike drivers, vehicle drivers to see and communicate their awareness? Why do all late model cars, SUVs, light trucks have overly bright lights, along with many drivers using high-beams, thus causing perils, hazards, to themselves and people in opposite directions to see road, pedestrians, etc? Similarly as above and more so are the overly bright lights on police, fire, ambulance, tow, vehicles? The overly bright lights, along with at night, in rain, fog, snow, are invitations to tragedies to happen. The only time bright lights are useful on police, fire, ambulance, tow vehicles, etc are during day time when sun is shining. Any other periods or weather conditions lights must be greatly dimmed so to be a means of warning and orientation. Why do people wear dark coloured clothing at night, e.g. pedestrians, bike drivers, etc? How important is it to always do mutal safety? Why do most people whether are, pedestrians, bike drivers, car drivers no longer pay attention to whatever is around them from weather conditions, visibility, space, distance, tail-gating others, abrupt maneuvers, etc compounded by being bold, seeking to get-to-red-ligh first,...?
On a motorcycle another mile could be your death If the bike feels off pull over you could have a low tire or you could have a drive belt about to break and throw you off it’s not worth the gamble
Exactly. Wouldn’t it make sense to haul oversized at night? This is just more truck hate garbage. Not to mention state police could pull over any truck they deemed unsafe and call DOT.
@chuck9380 he is right. With the rates so low companies are choosing to cut corners. And it ultimately falls on the driver . If he finds problems and refuses to drive , they find another driver. They are all over. I see more mega carrier trucks on the road with bald trailer tires, rear shoes hanging out of the drums, rear axles walking side to side on trailers, front axles hopping due to bad front end components, lights out, parts hanging off, broken body panels, and many other things than I do owner operator trucks. The majority of owner operators have some pride and take care of their trucks.. but it is always owner operators being pulled in by the dot. And they pick the trucks apart. While a big carrier that has prepass will go by the scale with low tires and a headlight out while the driver has his feet on the dash watching movies on his phone. It's all about money. Has zero to do with anything else. An example being weight limits. They don't want trucks over 80k lbs on the road in mn cuz it's too hard on the road and too dangerous they say, unless you buy a 600 dollar permit. Apparently then it's ok. Or you get caught running a bit heavy.. they fine you n you get back on the road.
Honestly, I think for oversize vehicles, running at night would be better considering they don't have to deal with the traffic during the day. When I drove a truck, I would run at nights between 8-10pm till my 11 hour clock ran out. I did it mainly for the convenience of being able to find a parking spot to shutdown at a truck stop in the morning. It is nice that most scale houses and DOT don't operate at those hours but I would never run illegally. Besides finding parking to shutdown, I was able to be more productive and get more miles in compared to sitting in traffic during the day. Personally I hated running in the northeast. Traffic sucks, people are assholes and there isn't enough parking for trucks to shutdown. Its unfortunate the young man lost his life and I dont know the details of the incident to comment on it. I will say from experience and I'm sure most truckers would agree with me, we dont run at night for illegal reasons, we do it to be more productive and get more miles in the shift, not have to deal with crazy drivers and traffic and have a safe legal spot to shutdown at the end of our shift. I will say out of all the states I travelled to, I hated going into Massachusetts and anything Northeast. I'd rather deliver to California over Massachusetts.
Yea ...nothing to do with avoiding anything..just less traffic. I would think that a motorcycle could get far enough over the shoulder to have avoidid this...but try telling the public that...then when they get behind a wide load in the daytime they fussing about the holdup...a company near me only delivers mobile homes at night..safety cars and all never had a problem...sad ..but accidents happen...
I agree. I was thinking the same that it be less traffic for truckers to run at night especially over sized loads. Just like the freeway construction crews by me only work at night when only a 10th of the traffic on the roads. Just riding a motorcycle at night is dangerous and rider probably wearing black clothes instead reflective. I hope the biker didnt stop there just to stop for a break but had actual break down. bikers should carry flares at night in case they do have to stop and need to get off into grass. any car couldve not seen the biker and hit him. look at all the people hurt and killed by drivers on cell phones yet no one is rushing to ban cell phones in cars. but when a working man has an accident everyone screams for REGULATION!
Law of averages when parking stationary in the breakdown lane at Night with traffic passing by right next to you at 120-150 feet per second... get off the bike and walk 100 feet away. Should be have been hit?technically, No. Can it happen? Yes.
Had a buddy with a wrecker kill a guy on his bike and he didn't have a light on the bike and ran under the wrecker and he got charged with things and got blamed cause he didn't have lights on the bike understand it can happen anywhere
@@nassiratti8542 not every state is dusk til dawn. I want to apologize to everyone for your ignorance. God bless your little heart. You are such a peach.
Sometimes you move at night because there’s less traffic. Truck didn’t want to harm anyone. When you break down on the side of the road, you need to watch out for traffic. It’s more dangerous to be stopped in the side of a highway. The person stopped becomes a hazard.
They move at night so they don't have to deal with the normal traffic. These oversized loads would absolutely clog the roads, and cause more harm than good. As far as the moron who got clipped by a semi along side of the highway? I bet he was standing on the shoulder wearing no high vis clothing, all black with a black motorcycle. Pull off the road. That lane doesn't guarantee your safety. Having a reliable vehicle would have saved his life. Why doesn't the DOT investigate the poor engine maintenance that led to his vehicle having to break down?
Did you ever stop and think that one of the reasons to move stuff at night is the fact that there's hardly any traffic at night. The roads are deserted. Many states ban moving heavy or oversized loads at night which is stupid in my view.
I don't know how you can say it's stupid on a video about how that got someone killed. It's like watching the accident everyone told you would happen unfold in front of you and then denying it.
This is basically an anti-truck hit job done by people with no actual understanding of how the world works. I'm sorry that boy lost his life, and running illegally is bad, but the journalists massively distort the facts to say, "look at me!" A bunch of narcissistic drivel. Oversize loads are safer to move at night when there's less traffic. Any State Patrol cop has authority to stop an illegal truck. There is no understanding at all here about how trucking companies operate.
I think you're missing the point. It's not about drivers of oversized trucks driving in the night. It's about doing this at a time of day when they know they won't be inspected so as to save on costly precautions.
@@mikethespike7579 On the contrary, I get the point, but they completely failed to make the case that this was actually happening. You cannot convince me of such things by anecdote. Moreover, have you ever worked in the industry? Do you understand just how common it is for trucking companies to be put in an impossible position of either rejecting the load and burning the customer or "taking one for the team"? The trucking companies have no control over what the shippers are doing, and they're pressured into this by a bunch of logistics managers who don't know better and don't understand the rules. Ultimately the trucking firms push the compliance burden onto THE DRIVER of the truck, who is the lowest man on the totem pole with the least amount of bargaining power, expecting the driver to somehow refuse the load. See how many times you burn your customer before eventually they switch firms to find another company willing to bend the rules, you will have no business left, and if you're the driver you will have no job left. The journalists (and yourself) have no clue, there is a massive iceberg of knowledge that is completely omitted here because the people in the newsroom have no idea that it's even there.
@@lashlarue7924 You base your rejection of the video on the assumption that it's an anecdote. But it is clearly not an anecdote. A young man was killed because a truck driver drove his oversize truck in the night to avoid having to implement costly safety precautious. With respect for your experience in this industry, that does not change the point of the news report in anyway.
@@mikethespike7579 Absolutely not. One single point observation in time does not magically extrapolate to a systematic trend. This is the very definition of anecdotal evidence, and although I'm sorry that boy was killed there is no preponderance of evidence that convinces me otherwise, whereas this is how the media manipulates public opinion. It's nonsense.
@@mikethespike7579 You do not understand the definition of "anecdotal evidence". A single point estimate in time is the very definition of "anecdote". One story doesn't magically extrapolate to ground truth on a systematic basis.
Y’all just now figuring this sh*t out? It’s been going on since weigh stations started. It’s not going to stop anytime soon until you start working around the clock.
Are you going to volunteer to pay for that and if this truck would have been driven during the day, would that have prevented what happened? Probably not, since accidents happen more during the DAY, than at NIGHTS. The truck that clobbered a trooper in florida then exploded should not have happened according to dumb logic since it was operating during the day and not night but for some reason the trooper is dead, the truck driver is dead, and the incident happened during the early afternoon. Now with that said, critical thinking and a little intelligence would dictate that it would be best to move these types of loads during the night since there are less people on the road and that alone would reduce the probabilities in having an accident and one that could kill someone but hey, what do i know
Reminds me of the Texas trucking union whining about Mexican truck drivers. When the state pulled the records, the Mexican trucks & drivers had fewer average violations than the American truck drivers in the state. Oops.
How are they illegal with a cdl when every state in the country does background checks to verify they are here legally to work??... you just racist that's all
Not suggesting drivers do anything illegal, but the government pushes drives WAY beyond the brink. This is one of the most over-regulated industries on the planet. Drivers now deal with paying money out for every little thing, killing profits. Heck, truck-stops (not Love's) now charge for parking. You are not supposed to park on the on/off-ramps in most areas, Walmart has asked drivers not to park on their lots overnight in a lot of areas, so people drive tired. Let's not talk about the ridiculous amount of regulations and such just there to drum up money from drivers, like biennial updates. Oh how about that new law that requires every small business in the country to pay something like $80 per employee to prove they're an actual business and not a money-laundering organization? Really? That said, the rule is that oversize can only be hauled dawn to dusk. This guy needs the book thrown at him. I'm just tired of these news (fake news) outlets blaming the industry. The law is dawn to dusk for oversize. Period. This isn't an industry problem, it's a problem in that area with drivers willing to break the law.
Yeah I never understood why people get arrested or ticketed for sleeping on the side of the road or a parking lot in a emergency. I *_VIVIDLY_* remember during my driving license test (the paper test part) we were taught that if you are drowsy and struggle staying awake while driving then IMMEDIATELY PULL OVER take a short nap for 1 or 2 hours AND THEN go find a parking lot or hotel to sleep in. Its like, would they rather people be driving while falling asleep? I understand parking on th side of the road is a hazard too, but it is MUCH LESS a hazard than someone driving sleepy......in fact, in most cases when somes drifts out of their line and hit something on the side of the road - it is BECAUSE they were SLEEPY!
The state police should stay up at night and do their jobs , especially for the Amount of money they make . Hire more, overtime scandals are nothing new to state police especially at Logan airport.
MA issues overnight permits. I’ve got a permit to legally move 12’ wide at night in MA. Was this motorcycle rider wearing a reflective vest, did he have flares out? Was he visible? It is a terrible loss, did the truck have MA issued oversized permits? There’s a lot missing here, and lots of blame on the truck.
You don't know what was going on with his bike or what is going on with a vehicle that is on the shoulder. Don't haul illegal loads and move over if you safely can when you see someone on the shoulder.
@@Servergmr To use in an absolute emergency which sadly is not the case for most, they pull over and stop for all.kinds of non-emergency reasons often with fatal results. When I lived in Wyoming, there was a road that ran by the ranch I was living on that truckers would use if they had oversize loads, but no permits. It bypassed the weigh station, but added 35 extra miles to their trip and there was very little traffic on it. Trucks would fly down that road trying to make up time. Finally, after lots of complaints the Highway Patrol started putting up temporary weigh stations, using portable scales. They'd do this about once a month, but it reduced the truck traffic by about 90%, once the word got out! There was never any warning and as soon as they set up and stopped the first truck, he'd relay the information to trucks behind him on the CB. They'd turn around, but the state troopers were already back there waiting for them. They'd sometimes have a line of 20 or so trucks waiting to be weighed.
@@heavyhaul8621 There's a bunch of county roads you can take to get from 287 to 230 to get around the Laramie port. And there's no weigh station on 287 on the Colorado side. Similar to how trucks are all over the county roads between Hillsdale and Cheyenne to bypass the I-80 port. The only one in SE Wyoming that really isn't bypassable is the I-25 port since the alternate route is 85 which also has a port, you'd have to go all the way out to Grover, Co or take 287 and bypass the Laramie port to bypass those. You can also bypass the Laramie port by using Harriman road from the Colorado side if you're heading towards Cheyenne.
So, just because one area of law enforcement is having issues we should stop all other law enforcement? Makes sense, it certainly would save a lot of money.
The real reason why they do this at night. It's because it's actually a lot safer. There is less traffic on the road. This is such a fabricated maid. Up thing. Accidents happen day or night. And it's very unlikely for something bad to happen. At night. They're trying to be careful by moving it at night.
What was the name of the company? It’s not just on the driver but the company that many times force drivers with threat of dismissal if they don’t follow company directives.

Nothing to do with Illegal immigrants (look at the news story and the graphics, and that guy responsible for the accident). Its about trucking companies not doing their job and ignoring the law to cut corners and there not being enough state troopers to deal with the enforcement in overnight hours. Traffic enforcement for safety needs more details and more manpower. Perhaps we need a tax on commercial vehicles in the state that specifically pays into expanding this enforcement unit and its hours.
@josephteller9715 Did you read the first few words of his post? Let me restate it for you. It said going to get worse. As more illegals are used by trucking companies because they are cheaper. And the trucks are not insured or inspected. So it is about the trucking companies. And the fact that there needs to be more inspection stations to stop it from happening.

Motorcycle riders should never use the shoulder or break down lane to stop under any conditions, if your motorcycle breaks down pull over and get of the bike and sit behind the concrete barriers or a metal pole, tree , basically any big enough object to shield yourself. Never trust highways on shoulders.
From a budgetary standpoint, the state does not see a return on investment in enforcing trucking regulations. It is not a priority. They pretty much give lip service to enforcement and the fines incurred are infinitesimal when compared to the equipment and labor cost for enforcement. In the end they treat it like a business and cut their losses with token enforcement.
The price isn't skyrocketing because people are pointing out truckers faults or carelessness, it's because of political and corporate greed from every level. You made yourself sound stupid with that comment and proved your ignorance. No amount of money is worth anyone life. What's wrong with that driver. He couldn't reschedule appointments. Those dispatchers and planners need to be more reliable. Lately, oversized stepdeck and flatbed have been doing a lot of illegal operating.
The driver is the one getting screwed in this position. He will be charged with vehicular manslaughter. He'll never drive again. His career is over. The company won't be held responsible. I run through Massachusetts a lot and I can't recall the last time I saw an open weigh station. Second, I see numerous troopers sitting on the Mass Pike and I see so many truck violations, especially flatbed violations (I have been doing flatbed for 26 years) and I'm blown away that loose straps, loose chains, shifted loads etc drive right past the troopers with no issues.
Highway Shoulders are for EMERGENCY STOPPING ONLY which are not breaks, sandwich time or watering the pavement time. The massive problem over the last few years has been the amount of cars and trucks illegally stopping on highway shoulders causing rear end collisions and pedestrian strikes. ✅⚠️☠️⚠️
I drove a tanker tractor trailer that was based out of Enosburg Falls, Vt to Garelick Farms Creamery in Franklin, Ma nightly. EVERY LOAD that is driven to either Franklin Ma or Lynn Ma is overweight. The owners of the company are very aware of this fact and if the driver gets caught at the weigh station along the route, the company gets upset with the driver. This problem needs to be addressed properly.
I have refused to drive trucks over loaded and returned to shippers to have them remove part of the load. I have never been reprimanded by any company I drove for.
Its not as simple as being over 102" wide and 80K pounds to not be able to run at night. Different rules for different wide's and weights. Some states you don't need pilot care if it is under 12' other you do. Some you need them in front other roads you need them behind you. Some loads you need 2 pilot cars and other you need police escorts.
People stopping on the emergency road shoulder are risking death. Pull off at the next exit. If you break down, walk away from the potential impact srea.
Eh, it's not THAT dangerous. Get out of the vehicle immediately and get over the guardrail and face incoming traffic on foot if you don't absolutely need to be in the vehicle. Don't camp out in the breakdown lane and you should be fine.
I am a truck driver I seen this couple days ago a oversized truck running at night time I wonder to myself aren't they allowed only from 6am to 6pm ....what's the number

Every cop should have the training in this area. Even though we have the Federal run National Heavy Vehicle Authority, (fully accredited, trained police) that monitor Heavy vehicles throughout Australia, all police officers in each state still have the power to stop and issue tickets to anyone not complying with load limits, or even driver logbook infringements.
Less traffic (at night) means more work can get accomplished. This isn’t some shady activity that they’re making it look like, it’s been going on for years. Oversized and heavy haul often run at night because of the sheer size of the equipment and many times are traveling well below the speed limit.

This is what happens when your state defunds police departments and loosens the laws. Same thing is happening with private drivers smoking weed while driving. I see it all of the time. Mass is one of the worst states for it. Yet nobody is enforcing that either. Also oversized loads run at night in heavily populated states to avoid crowded roadways. More cars on the road means more risk for personal injury.

It’s scary. I’ve encountered this multiple times as a truck driver in the Northeast. Often the guys that are running these cowboy illegal oversize loads also don’t have any blinkers and lights to warn you how wide they are. I think once I called it in to the state patrol and obviously nothing was done about that.
I’ve heard from a number of truckers who usually drive at night that one of the reasons they do so is to evade getting stopped and ticketed from driving overweight loads.
Off hours are safer for moving oversized loads. Less traffic. Also causes fewer traffic delays. The problem is with DOT not working at night to inspect oversized.
You are worried about trucks but not worried about fly by night food stands that are operating at night that are not licensed, certified or inspected by health departments
We here in Toledo Oh had an overpass struck on I75 last year in the middle of the night by an illegal oversize load hauling a large piece of construction equipment. The brigde had to be torn down and the overpass is in the process of being rebuilt. The driver left the truck and escaped on foot. He was caught 2 days later. Expensive accident!
So as a former trucker why can't any other state trooper stop these vehicles if they are seen on the roadways here in Calif we have dedicated DOT CHP officers but tht doesn't prevent the rest of the force from stopping 18 wheeler's....just saying
Is this news channel mentally backwards? Because that oversize driver was just out right breaking the law, has nothing to do with some imaginary loophole. Like this industry isn’t already over-regulated every step of the way. Crime will always slip thru cracks, cant enforce everything 24/7.
