The greatest crisis of the Jewish people during the Hellenistic era involved the persecution imposed by the ruler of Syria, Antiochus IV Epiphanes. His reign of terror sparked the backlash known as the Maccabean Revolt, and the eventual effect of this movement was to liberate Israel from outside control for the better part of a century. I came across your channel while researching the siege of jerusalem in 70 AD. I have now watched almost all of your videos in the history series. I really appreciate your ability to draw from both historical and biblical sources. You have given me great direction in my search for answers, and I want to applaud the work you have done. Thank you for sharing these great lectures. I will surely be buying your book.

Wow! Trying to research on the Maccabees and how Feast of Dedication/Hanukkah came about. Though I know some.. I got so much more from this teaching.. the history with these kings, priests and people is absolute wonderful. I am so grateful. Churches need to be teaching this. I've never heard this king of teaching before, and I love biblical history. Thank you for sharing your teaching with us. My eyes have been opened and things explained make a lot more sense.

Huge Facts dropped in this lecture. The Aaronic priesthood ceased when Antiochus gave the priesthood to Menelaus for Money. Also, the line in the sand incident is great “aha” about where this came from

You are right about this lecture containing "Aha!" info. This explains a lot about the corruption of the priesthood in Christ's time. I had always wondered about that. Remember in Romans when the priests said "If He continues like this, all will believe in Him and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation?" I had always found that a stunning comment. Now I understand!

Interesting! in Malachi 2 the priesthood was being called into check... That they were not teaching the word of God like they were supposed to: 7 For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts. 8 But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the Lord of hosts. 9 Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law. ... 12 The Lord will cut off the man that doeth this, the master and the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob, and him that offereth an offering unto the Lord of hosts.

Matthias the priest seemed to have the influence of Phineas Aaron's grand-son in Numbers 31which is the 4th book and 9th spoke of the 2nd cycle of 22 (9+22=31) of the innerwheel of Numbers (chapter 31). Now compare Numbers 31 with the 9th book 4th chapter, 1Samuel 4 where Eli's son Phineas does the opposite than Eleazar's son in Numbers 31.

I have read that parts of the Book of Daniel may be written during the maccabean revolts, not during the exil of Daniel. Is that true?
@GoreBruce
@GoreBruce 5 лет назад
The date of the writing of Daniel has been controversial for centuries. Critical scholars confidently assert a late date, but more traditional scholars argue for an earlier date. It may be that Daniel was written at a later time, but based on reliable sources that traced back to Daniel's era. The matter remains unresolved.

Bruce, your lectures are awesome and I always reccommend them to friends. But I have a burning question you may have insight into: I see in the ancient world, royal families murdering each other for power, now I know this continued throughout history in many lands, but you see it lacking in Christian Europe more and more within families (except for odd situations like Richard the 3rd of England - as it was rumoured, and in Russia). My question is, do you think Christianity had an effect on this? Did christianity cause families to kill each other less for power? anyways, thank you so much for posting these!! I will keep watching till I have watched them all!
@GoreBruce

+AmidalaEmma I believe (in spite of nay-sayers to the contrary) that a genuine expression of the Christian message has demonstrably influenced cultures toward diminishing violence and increasing peace. The case is made reasonably well in Alvin Schmidt's 'Under the Influence.' www.amazon.com/Under-Influence-Christianity-Transformed-Civilization/dp/0310236371/ref=sr_1_7?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1462897350&sr=1-7&keywords=under+the+influence

Emma Hi maybe i can answer your question! The word Christian and Christianity or term meaning protected or anointed by God Yah ! The Bible says nothing of Christianity that is man made. The bible speaks on the (10) commandments and the other 613 laws of conduct. So now that Christ has died for our sins the sacrificial law is done away with Roman 8:1-8. We follow the bible to the best of our ability. So the nations outside of the Jews that kill , steal and engage in corruption is the perfect example of what happens when you don't follow the teachings of the Bible!

I was always of the understanding that Menelaus was probably from the Tribe of Benjamin. But thereafter the High priest returned to Aaron’s line. Can you please clarify your thinking as I can’t find anything to substantiate your claim. Regards

Bruce Gore why did you stop at Daniel 11:35.. The events that follow in chapter 11:36 and so on, do they align with Antiochus IV Epiphanes?
@GoreBruce
@GoreBruce 3 года назад
These lectures were made about 20 years ago, and that particular audio recording was lost at some point. The short answer to your question is that the narrative from v. 36 on appears to focus on events toward the end of the first century b.c. The precise identity of the character being described remains controversial, but I incline to the view that it is probably Herod, and relates to his support of Marc Antony and the Battle of Actium, 31.b.c.

I wish there would be more references, and also more historical context besides Jerusalem and the Maccabees. The hellenistic period was, indeed, a period where the Hellens were hellenizing the territories conquered by Alexander the Great. It was a massive movement. It was exactly like English is right now, along with English speaking people' s customs and idiosyncrasies being imposed everywhere all over the globe. And no one says: oh, I want to be cool. They just wear jeans and do what they see on TV.

Did I hear correctly? Did you make claim Mattathias was a priest but Maccabees were not and the Maccabees appeared to be doing good in the uprising but had ulterior motives in doing so. If I heard right I would presume you have not read Josephus' account of the Maccabees. One point being Mattathias is the father of 5 sons Josephus names them 1. Joannan, called Caddis. 2. Simon called Thassi. 3. Judas called Maccabeus; 4. Eleazar called Avaran. and Johnathan surnamed Apphus. Mattathias was the great grandson of Asmoneus also he was the father of Maccabees Antiq. 12.6.1. Mattathias exhorted his sons to uphold the law of their forefathers. When Mattathias and his sons saw babies being hung by their necks and their mothers killed for having their babies circumcised and young men put to the sword they put on sackcloth and mourned. Mattathias did spake to his sons saying "Woe is me wherefore was I born to see the misery of my people and the holy city.. Her infants are slain in the streets. Her young men put to the sword. All her ornaments are taken away. As a free woman she has become a bondslave. And her sanctuary even our beauty and our glory is laid waste. And the gentile have profaned it. To what end therefore shall we live any longer?" Mattathias after the kings officers made an attempt to bribe and seduce him into idolatry spake in a loud voice saying. "Though all the nations that are under the kings dominion and obey him, and fall away every one from the religion of their fathers. Yet I and my sons and my brethren walk in the covenant of our fathers. God forbid that we should forsake the law and the ordinances. Then Mattathias saw one of the Jews who came forward in the sight of all to sacrifice on the altar which was in Modine, according to the kings command. In great rage Mattathias slew him upon the altar then he slew also the kings officers. Do you disregard this testimony written in the Apocryphal of the 1st book of Maccabees? If so for what reason? Do you assume is it not true? Many on the internet slander the Maccabees who are sons of Mattathias whom you know was a Levite and legitimate priest. Why do certain 'Christians' and Jews make the claims I perceived you to have spoken? Mattathias also told his sons as descendants of Phinehas they should do likewise as valiant men. Phinehas was the son of Eleazer and grandson of Aaron. 1 Chron 6:4. Mattathias recalled the covenant God made for an everlasting priesthood to remain in his line to time indefinite. Numbers 25:1-3, 6-15; Psalms 106:30;31.

So, is that where Christmas really comes from? Dec 25, in winter, the feast of Hanakah?
@GoreBruce
@GoreBruce 5 лет назад
The origins of the December 25 date for Christmas remain uncertain. The date was not really widely recognized or accepted until around the 4th century a.d. There are various theories as to why December 25 was finally chosen. Hannukkah is celebrated beginning on the 25 of Kislev (which is around December 2) continues for eight days. There is no direction connection between the two that has been widely recognized.

Early Christians invented Christmas to replace and repurpose pagan solstice celebrations, I don't know how it ended up on the 25th tho
@banhammer3904
@banhammer3904 4 года назад
If you're going with the winter solstice explanation, the sun stops moving south in the sky on the Southern Cross (dies) for three days and then on the 25th rises again and starts moving north. Therefore, it's a natural phenomenon representing the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Many people use this as an argument that Christianity is a guise for Egyptian sun worship, but I don't buy it.

The Roman Catholic Church, in their attempt to make converts from among the pagans, felt that they had to find a way to indentify culturally with them. They had the Biblical story of the miraculous virgin birth of Christ, so they decided it must have happened on 25 December and the pagans were invited to come to church and worship him. Thus there was a position of ambiguity, where some people might have genuinely converted to Christianity while others turned up just to indulge in the latest religious innovation. It was equivalent to the inclusion of Jesus in the Roman pantheon of the gods, a matter which the early church had firmly resisted at the cost of the death of many martyrs. Thus the Roman Catholic Church established the Madonna and child as the latest manifestation of the Queen of Heaven and her son. The Pagans made no compromises, they didn't need to, they just came and worshipped their new deities because it fitted in nicely with what they already believed. While it's easy to knock the Catholic Church because of their Maryolatry, the Protestants cannot be left off the hook. The Protestant Reformation dispensed with only a part of the Babylonian system of worship. The celebration of Christmas, inherited from the Roman Catholic Church, via Pagan Rome, via Egypt, via Babylon, is still practiced as the most important event in the Protestant Christian calendar, so from that point of view the Protestants are into as much ambiguity as the Catholics. It is also a violation of Jeremiah 10:2-5 where it is denounced as a heathen idol: Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good. Are you going to have a Christmas tree in your church this year? Are you going to have one in your house? Are you going to give presents to each other on 25th December in the ambiguous veneration of a multitude of gods, and have you thought of other things you can do that will keep the children happy on that day? Common excuses people use to continue celebrating Christmas Excuse: "God knows my heart, that I do not believe in false gods and that i am choosing to honour Jesus on this day." Answer: Indeed, God does know our hearts and has mercy on those who are perishing due to lack of knowledge, but it is God's will that we come to repent after we have heard the truth, for to hear the truth and not turn away from our wicked ways, it would be considered sin: James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. Besides, to truly honour Jesus would be to celebrate him on a day that is not the birth of a pagan sun God. How can darkness fellowship with light? (2 Cor 6:14-17). We cannot fool ourselves into thinking good can be mixed with evil. Excuse: "I won't have a Christmas tree or embrace santa claus. I will stay away from all pagan customs associated with the day and just focus on Jesus." Answer: The whole day itself is dedicated to a pagan God, therefore even wishing people a Merry Christmas and choosing to celebrate it, is still engaging in idolatry. Ephesians 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

I followed video 25 covering the early Greek period, the split into 4 separate kingdoms and the interaction between north and south (Seleucid and Ptolemaic) kings. I thought the general interpretation made sense there, but believe that in this video (26) there is far too much emphasis on the Maccabean and Antiochus period. Daniel 7, Daniel 8 and Daniel 12 cover the whole, or most of the tribulation / occupation of Jerusalem. None of them terminate with Antiochus IV no matter how hard one might try to force an interpretation. And the same goes with Daniel 11. All the chapters are accounts of Israel’s ENTIRE occupation by gentile nations, beginning in Daniel’s time with Babylon (except for Daniel 8 with Alexander) and ending with the Antichrist Empire which occupied Jerusalem for the WHOLE second half of the 2,500+ period up until the 20th century. In other words, the abomination of desolation that Daniel refers to time and again occurs in the precise midpoint of the tribulation and therefore cannot be in Antiochus’ time (a desecration only) or when the Roman general Titus laid siege to the city in AD 70. The Romans under Tiberius certainly desecrated Jerusalem and the Temple, but they did not stop worship and offering being presented in the Temple Mount permanently. Some Caesars had severe prohibitions, others not so much. However AFTER the Muslims came to power in the 7th century all worship by Jews and Christians ceased, the abomination al Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock were constructed and virtually all devout Jews and Christians fled the Holy Land under pain of severe persecution and death. That means the A of D of Daniel and AD 689 is the precise middle of Israel’s tribulation / occupation by gentile nations which only ended in June 1967. This was when Jerusalem was reunited / reconcecrated (Daniel 8) under Jewish rule once again. Daniel 11 covers all the way to the 20th century; specifically until General Allenby (of the British Empire, king of the south) liberated Jerusalem and the Holy Land.

Thank you for the history of Daniel so far. Yes, the Messiah came to us not to rescue us from our earthly "Romans" but from our sins - the one thing since Adam's fall that stands between us and eternal life. Acts 3:26 "God, having raised up his servant Jesus, sent him to you first to bless you, in turning away every one of you from your wickedness."

Solomon was a king, not a prophet, so right there your book is wrong... and Jesus was before your Muhammed and said to us beware of the false prophet.... don't you prostate and pray to a rock....

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. John 16:12-13 This verse means that another prophet was yet to come to guide the mankind to truth and our prophet (s.a.w) confirmed that all other prophets came before him like jesus, moses, solomon, david,etc And regarding solomon(a.s) he was a king as well as a prophet Solomon, Hebrew Shlomo, biblical Israelite king who built the first Temple of Jerusalem and who is revered in Judaism and Christianity for his wisdom and in Islam as a prophet. The references to the bible greatly diminishes the credibility of the talk. I was directed here for history, not for religious interpretations.

Thank for the feedback, though you might note that this is lecture 26 in a 37 part series entitled, "Historical Context of the Bible." It would be somewhat misleading if I did in incorporate 'references to the Bible.' Thanks again.

Bruce Gore I truly believe Daniel 11 35 is future. It is clear in the book of Revelation that the beast was dead at the time the book of Revelation was written. The beast that was and is not comes out of the bottomless pit. In Rev 17, 5 kingdoms had fallen. The first kingdom is Greece. The other 4 were 4 kingdoms that appeared after Alexander the Great died suddenly. The bible only talks about 2 of these 4, the king of the North and the king of the South. The 6th kingdom was Rome at the time the book of Revelation was written. After the rapture of the church, a 7th kingdom appears from the sea of humanity and has 10 crowns on 10 heads. Rev 13 1. But this kingdom only rules for a short time. Then a wicked man appears and subdues 3 of the first 10. In Rev 12 3 midtrib, clearly the world is ruled by a kingdom with 7 crowns on 7 heads. But the ruler of this kingdom is part of the previous 7 and was dead at the time the book of Revelation was written. The king of the North appears in biblical times and will come out from the deepest part of hell and live again. All this is being restrained by the church. At midtrib at an event called the abomination of desolation, this man will be revealed. Islam makes a joke of this by saying a person will come out of well in Iraq. But instead this person will come out of the abyss.
