#Behringer #2600 #bluemarvin #graymeanie #review
A look at the differences between the 'premium' and standard 2600 models. The Blue Marvin and Gray Meanie are around £100 more so why is that? It's a deeper dive than I was anticipating. I was determined to find some definitive differences.. but it's all very subtle, except for the mechanical reverb. A bit brighter on the Blue Marvin's oscillators, is all I could confidently say.

I own all of these, as originals. Bought them in London 20 years ago (Grey, Blue and Black). Been toying with synths since the mid 70s when I was a young teenager. Some aspects of today's nostalgia make me laugh (or cringe ?). They were never perfect machines and we found them limited when they were new. Some iconic keyboardists extracted beautiful but rather unvaried sounds from them. The 2600 is a joy to toy with, but I'd argue it is less magical than the Minimoog, which, while finicky, has a surprisingly broad and assertive palette. My Blue is unrepairable, having broken circuits that are potted in resin. The Grey has issues and the Black, while mostly playable, is best used as a semi-modular for the sort of sounds Herbie Hancock got from it in "Sextant". I don't know what people find to spring reverb ; they are crude devices that wobble like a flimsy chair, and sound like the imitation of an imitation. It's the meme territory of reverberation. Behringer is doing everyone a service by both demystifying these instruments (while making circuits that are true-to but cleaner than the originals) and selling them for a song. By the time Behringer is through cloning all of the classics, it will have no choice but to head into hybrid digital/(semI)modular territory. The aversion that younger folks have to digital synths is based on the reaction we had to the clinical sounds of a DX7, for instance. But in a double-blind test, I believe everyone would be fooled by proper digital implementations, like Waldorf, Arturia, Softube, Mutable Instruments et al have shown great skill at. Once you've reproduced pop and fusion sounds of the last 40 years, you have to admit there is more to timbre than folded sawtooths with resonant 4-pole filters. I predict a re-discovery of physical modelling synths and formant filters, for instance. By the way, Starsky, you are have world class synth programming chops. You have a visceral understanding of these architectures, that few are ever able to attain. Kudos to you - I enjoy each and every show you post. Cheers.

@Terry Murray My first synth was the Odyssey. I was 12 and I saved money for a year to get it. It wasn’t the Minimoog but I couldn’t afford better. It was a great sketchpad to learn on but the sound was so limiting. Something about Arps that sound like PBX telephone tones. Moogs had a denser sound. Went through the whole adventure like you with polyphonic synths and then digital. But the DX was impossible to program and the Kurrzweil was boring. Synclavier was a nice parenthesis, as was the Fairlight. But then the PPG came and wavetables changed everything. The best digital synths today use very fast, high resolution FPGAs and they can reproduce all the nuances (instability?) of old analogue gear. I am somewhat more excited today by Eurorack and with Synths that integrate well with such (Minimoog, Neutron, 2600). Special mention to the Pro3 … its a true classic that deserves more attention.

@Rhizosphere The 2600 is a ton of fun to play with and in many ways it’s got slightly more of the modular soul than it is a keyboard instrument. At that price I’d get it just for the potential of discovery, not discounting the fact that it integrates well with other patchable synths
@phpn99
@phpn99 3 года назад
@Rhizosphere The guy who sold me my collector's gear in London had a box-fresh Moog IIIc kit to sell. It cost a fortune and I was tempted. But when you tallied the number of oscillators, filters, etc, you didn't actually get much more than a couple of Minimoog's worth of kit, except for the sound quality and the patchability. Of all the gear I bought from him, the Mini had the best bang for the buck ; it's deceptively simple at first, but you keep on discovering things you can do with it. The Arps are more like a good tutorial on subtractive synthesis, but their playability is limited. You rarely heard keyboard beasts use one as a lead instrument. Like the AMS Synthi, it was more of a "lab" thing to make cricket sounds (think Brian Eno) and the odd funky line. Herbie Hancock did febulous stuff in 1973 with 2600s, but mostly non-tonal music. One thing we tend to forget when we hear synth sounds from the 70s and 80s, is how much these guys would patch these instruments through a whole enchilada of effects and distortion. The Roland Space Echo was ubiquitous, as were the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase, and all manner of guitar pedals and valve amps. Even an electro-acoustic keyboard like the Rhodes 73 or the Clavinet, would have their pick-ups re-wound for a fatter sound. I own a '73, and before the mods when it has its factory sound, it sounds nothing like Hancock's or Chick Corea's. Back in the day, they didn't have a concept of "it's a vintage sound !", so they would break the shit out of their gear, to make it sound as rich as guitars, pianos and basses. The way we are splitting hairs today with vintage synths, so we reproduce something they did on a whim 50 years ago, is totally alien to their spirit. What needs to be re-captured is the spirit of adventure with these devices, and stop being reverent with these things, as if religious relics.

My fondness for the 2600 arose while playing around with an emulator, when I discovered that by setting up filter self-resonance and patching things appropriately, it was possible to develop long loops of slowly-evolving sounds suggesting aliens from outer space -- insects, by my reckoning -- that were simply amazing. I was impressed by the fact that, at least in this instance, the rig's most spectacular effect was almost an unanticipated side effect. Amazing!

TBH, anyone wanting amazing spring reverb... buy a Light Pedal. The added optical spring sensor makes the overtone character of spring reverb a whole new ballgame! Much less the onboard envelope and overtone feedback. Buy that black 2600, and buy a Light Pedal, seriously best spring reverb ever made! (& i’ve loved spring since the late 70s)

Hey Starsky - very interesting and very revealing. Why can't Behringer simply tell us what the differences are like any other manufacturer? A comment on another video suggested that the capacitors (or something) were a higher quality (or something) which seemed to make the filters better. Sorry for the techy description :-) So you're essentially spending another 1/5th on a spring reverb. Doesn't seem like the usual Behringer value. I have a Moog Grandmother with spring reverb and you can't turn it on too much, as you say, without it getting, er, springy. Good for taking the dryness out of a sound but otherwise I think a DSP reverb is more useful. Anyway, everyone knows the ARP 2600 is brown and orange, not grey or blue :-)

The original Arp 2600's are all 40 years old with 4 versions and god knows how many tweaks in a production run. Add in most have had new parts in so its possible that 2 consecutive Grays will sound more different to each other than Behringers versions. Which B you choose will be more down to the reverb and colour. I got a Gray because i preferred the colour :)

I don't really care much for spring reverbs anyway, so for me it was up to the general sound of the models. As far as I'm concerned the difference is so small that I decided to go for the black/orange, since I like the colour scheme much more than the blue or the grey. Yeah the out of phase thing doesn’t work so well on stuff like this.. so subtle it’s not great viewing 😂 plus it’s dependent on phase and tuning so unless they’re perfectly in tune and you lineup the phases there’s room much room for discussion (by that I mean people finding fault, which is a hobby for some 😂). So in these I try to get the overall feel rather than going to lab levels of detail - which is tedious to do and gets ripped apart anyway.

If you're interested, Rob Keeble from AMS Synths, the main engineer behind the 2 models of Berhinger 2600, wrote a bunch of comments under this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tAN5rXQpJ5I.html. I will repost one of the more explicative (all credits to Rob obviously): "The brown/orange B2600 is the first and has some mods from a stock 2600 to remove the bugs, and take it back to the vision of 1970. But has a digital reverb and standard filter caps. The Marvin and Meanie have PPS caps in the filters as they were in the supply chain for the Poly D, so that all helps the price point. The Manchester team may have made further mods but the only things I wanted to improve was the filters as I knew the spring reverb was in, and we had sorted the noise source on all B2600’s. Filters rely on matched components and the best caps, so going with 1% PPS in SMD gets as close as I can to perfection. As a musician you will hear improvements in resonance when in self oscillation and a better prescene. I will refresh my You Tube channel so we dont distract from Ralphs amazing music!"

But these extreme out'o'phase-reverb is exactly what you get from the original... Great Video by the way, as always! :-)

Thanks for the explanation I was honestly worried that something is wrong with either the video or my phone. I guess I'll grab a pair of headphones for that but I hope this problem with monocompatibility can be fixed, because come on, even JBL makes their speakers mono nowadays, it will be a nasty surprise for me to hear me music without intended reverb.
@nonameforareason
@nonameforareason 3 года назад
@@Ss0oUuLl The only way to „fix“ this is to listen to one channel only (left OR right), you cannot correct this radical phase issue with alignment tools of any kind without killing the sound of the rest...you have to do the same while recording (just one channel, left or right doesn't matter) to prevent this when you want to use the internal spring reverb...it's an „old“ (since 1971, haha) ARP 2600-problem but there are not so many talking/writing about it.
@Ss0oUuLl
@Ss0oUuLl 3 года назад
@@nonameforareason yeah thanks again for the follow up, sad to hear this is internally hardwired to do that, because I really enjoy wide stereo, but preferably in such way so I can "eat the cake" in stereo and "still have it" in mono, e.g. having a microdelay between left and right or even having two separate springs, because why not :)
@matthewpreston1396
@matthewpreston1396 3 года назад
Yeah, it’d be great if the DSP reverb on the standard version could offer the ability to be in simple mono. I did come up with a few workarounds that seemed to work - slightly delaying the left and right outputs against each other; recording both left and right outs - presuming you had patched different signals to them - but with reverb only turned up on one channel (then summing to mono); or recording both left and right outputs dry, and routing/recording the reverb out of its dedicated output in mono (not tried this yet, but should work I think). But, yes, a fix to have the internal reverb in phase would be welcome. I was actually worried that the real spring in the blue Marvin might not be out of phase, but it seems that is too. It was a Common trick with old springs and BBD units. And an annoying one! Although, to be fair, I didn’t notice it until someone mentioned it online and thought the DSP version actually sounded great! ....but I guess part of that was this fake widening. Great for jamming. Not so great for proper recordings

Who is listening on headphones too? Besides being brighter, the Blue Marvin has... "fatter" low end, as it also (and even more blatantly) does in another comparison video (Ralph's). This makes me suspect that it's not simply common differences between the same synths, and that I should never buy the orange one. The waveform of the Marvin looks more curved in the low end, too. A long attack filter-sweep might make the difference more clear? Er... pretty please? ;) :D

The only difference I am hearing is the two oscillators phase a little bit indicating that they are ever so slightly out of tune against each other. By themselves, no real difference. My guess is you would find similar differences between two of the oscillators on the same machine. I really do not like spring reverbs, it's the tail that I don't like, that beating you get in the tail of the spring has always bothered me going all the way back to when I was a kid; long before I knew what a revered even was, just did not like the sound.

@@DestroyER82 you underestimate behringer. this is all pre-planned. every BO2600 has a the same motherboard with a place for a spring tank as the GM/BM. Maybe you have never owned a spring tank in the modern digital world. they are the most trash reverb only for certain uses, but that's what they had in 1970. I would like S-C to plug cables when the springverb is turned up and see how much garbage the spring makes from physical excitations. Once the mono-pitch of the spring starts eating at you, you will start hating it becasue it never changes. from this perspective, the black2600 is the ONLY choice.

I would guess that they mean they measure and select certain components rather than relying on the stated values. E.g. you can measure a bunch of 10k 5% resistors and select the ones that are within 0.1% or even better. I’ve done this when building oscillators to get the V/Oct tracking bang on.
