MAD isn’t required for a Cold War. We have to go to another military term: strategic depth. A Cold War is when powers are in conflict but fear the strategic depth of their rival and the sheer cost they would pay in open confrontation. A modern non-MAD driven example is Turkey and Greece over Cyprus. MAD merely fosters extremely stable Cold Wars, but it’s strategic depth that enables them.

It could be that the _"benefactor"_ of the Suliban wasn't limited to just using technology that only allowed communication with the past … but was using it to go _under the radar._ Actual time travel could be *detected* by temporal scanners, so jaunting back whenever he wanted to give orders may have been risky. It was a way to stay clandestine, as well as hide their identity *if* they were part of another organisation that would be against their actions - or just wanted to hide that they were breaking the Accord. Off topic, but imagine the temporal fallout if StarFleet had got their hands on a Suliban Cell Ship and been able to reverse engineer the technology, then implement it with Earth's industrial capacity. The power increase would allow them to completely dominate (as well as having cloaking technology and never being forced to limit usage of it). And what if StarFleet also got the genetic engineering technology of the Suliban [just the vacuum survival mod would greatly improve survivability] - since it was bio mods applied to adults the ban may not apply…

They’ve essentially hopscotched about 95% of Star Trek History, from the tail end of Pike’s captaincy of the Enterprise to the end of the Temporal Cold War. That means Discovery has no knowledge of any of the knowledge we as Trek fans take for granted. They have no knowledge of Kirk’s five year mission, all of TOS and their movies, the entirety of the TNG era, including TNG, their movies, DS9, and Voyager, Lower Decks, and what will likely happen in the upcoming Prodigy. It will be interesting to see Burnham‘s reaction to what Spock accomplished after she was gone, if they see her do that: his time on the Enterprise, the Khitomer Accords, his Amabassadorship.

Considering the showrunners’ stated reason for launching Discovery into the 32nd century was to “be free of canon,” (their words), I’m not confident that they are the least bit familiar with any of these storylines, despite Daniels originating from a time only a few decades earlier. If they surprise me, then spacecraft from this period can appear larger on the inside than outside. If they surprise me, time travel in this time is child’s play (apparently, it’s child’s play pre-TOS, but I digress). Maybe they will surprise me and tie into the Temporal Cold War, possibly even explaining the radical discrepancies between TOS-verse and Discovery-verse (and I don’t just mean visually). The fact that we see a ship from the 32nd century in Enterprise that is of Vulcan design makes a great deal of sense. Aside from small scout crafts and shuttles, the Vulcans had largely stopped building large starships during the Federation years. Instead what we see is described as a retrofitted dorsal carrier with the commission date of 3125. It is obviously an enormous defense oriented craft which makes sense if Vulcan is now on its own and protecting its own planet and colonies because the Federation collapsed the century before.
