On this episode of Ultimate Barrier Testing, we will compare the performance of the 270 Win to the 30-06 on 4 different targets. Each target is worth 25 points (winner takes all), for a grand total of 100 points. Whichever cartridge ends up with the highest score will be the winner. Testing was setup at 50 yards. Steel is A529 grade 55 mild steel. 1 inch = 25.4 mm. Thanks for watching!

Anyone remember Craig Boddington’s article back in the 90’s ? He pretty much summed it up as anything a .30 can do, a .27 or .28 can also do, just with a lot less recoil and a flatter trajectory.

It would be nice to see a comparison between the 150 grain and the 220 grain bullets in the 30-06. The nice thing about the 30-06 is its ability to launch a large variety of bullet weights, anything from a 100-grain Plinker to the 220-grain in a standard twist bore. Some tighter twists can stabilize up to a 250-grain bullet.

30-06 - Will take any game in North America. Where it shines is Moose andd big bear. It shoots heavier bullets too and has very good energy with 180 grain bullets. You can also shoot 220 grains. Bullet selection is great as well. I preferred going down in grain for your average white tail, say 150 or 165. 270 win - It can still take any game in North America. Shot placement is a slightly more critical with the 270 as opposed to the 30-06 and type of bullet is also more important. Advantages of the 270 include less recoil, flatter trajectory of the bullets. Both are legendary rounds & I have both. For white tails I prefer a 25-06 for its low recoil. In factory loads I believe the 270 shoots flatter but with more recoil. Then, there's the argument that if you see a 10 point buck, you'll never feel any recoil. Speaking of recoil, you should never shoot a round that makes you flinch a lot. Great debabtes in hunting camps go on.....243, 7mm08, 25-06, 270, 30-06, 7mm all serve a purpose. Each one is like art work imho.

You’re not giving bullet weights, a 30.06 does not really start coming into its own until you hit 180 grains, mine, even though ballistic drop was heavy, always performed best with 220 grain rounds. If you understand how to shoot, and know the drop of your round, the heavier bullets perform better further out, they simply have the best available energy.

The 30-06 Springfield and the 270 Winchester are nearly identical when using bullets of 150 grains or lighter. The difference is very apparent with heavier bullets and hand loaded rounds. The 30-06 Springfield comes into its own when using 165 grain projectiles and larger, 180 grain, 200 grain, or even 220 grain.

Replaced the stock with an AR style. Much lighter so I figgered that the recoil would be worse. Not. Felt recoil is less than a third. Follow ups are infinitely faster. As an aught six buff I thought this is a good thing to pass on to others like me whom might be getting on in years and past the "love that recoil" stage. Im plus 60 now and still, STILL hunt the Idaho high ups for elk every year. Lighter rifle lets me walk longer and further but the hardly felt recoil is just the most wonderful thing ever! Decades ago when 270 and 30-06 were the typical choice for deer. The deciding factor was the environment. The 30-06 was, along with many other 30 calibers, was considered a "Bush Buster" because small branches and twigs wouldn't have much effect on the flight path. So the original .270 load was a 130gr bullet at 3160fps. The ammo manufacturers received complaints about meat damage and had to lower it to 3000 fps. In recent years they’ve upped it a tad but it’s still lacking a 100fps or so (this matters a lot because that’s basically the difference between a 308 and a 30-06). The .30-06 in this video is above factory averages and the .270 is right at factory averages (which is still lower than its initial power). IMO I think the .270 is just the better caliber if loaded correctly. Shoots flatter, penetrates just as much if not more due to higher sectional density and has less recoil. Not a bad test just give the 270 a fair shake. The Barnes LRX factory load is close to the original loading as you can get.

Did he post velocities of each round? Also, the .270 doesn't have a higher SD than the '06. Some bullets certainly do, but that all depends on the particular bullets compared.
@hunterjohnson5635
@hunterjohnson5635 5 месяцев назад
He did in the video description. I will say though, that sectional density has no relation to the bullet type or construction (he used interlocks for each). Sectional Density is essentially the weight of the projectile in relation to its largest width; in this case it is .277” and .308”. I think you might be thinking of B.C. Which does take the design of the bullet into place. Thanks for the comment, brother.

@@hunterjohnson5635 I know what SD and BC are. My point was that there are bullets for the .270 that have a higher SD than SOME bullets for the '06, but not all of them do. Depends on the bullet weights selected for each. Banana doesn't do scientific testing. His tests are exactly what they are. If you want a more definitive test it's on you.

instead of same bullet weights, id like to see comparison of similar ballistic co-efficient. The area of the bullet base is what the pressure of the burning pushes against, i wonder if there is a similar velocity if bullet weight/base diameter are similar....id think so, but can anyone fill me in on this??

Hunting antelope with a with a diehard 30-06 Pennsylvania white tail hunter back in 1992 we had a similar test. Although he had taken more than 50 deer in his life time hunting in McKean county PA he could not hit a antelope with it a the distances we were presented with. On the last day of the hunt he finally got a nice pronghorn, when he borrowed my .270.

I don't think there is any way the .270 is loaded to the same pressure as the 30-06 if the velocity's stated are correct.

And many a hunter in the northern Arctic regions..the 300 Savage was considered “The Cartridge”! Using that Savage 99. Northern Europe it was rifles chambered in 6.5x55. Lots of hype on this subject and has been for decades…doesn’t change the fact that people just need to learn to shoot accurately enough in real hunting scenarios meaning on big game. I’ve seen dudes that were great shots..on the bench!! But also seen dudes miss reasonable shots because of buck fever or not knowing to use their sling in standing shot situations. Missed the animal badly!!

Here’s what’s meaningful, per any bullet weight the .270 will have a higher MOA wind constant and thus the bullet trajectory is ALWAYS less effected by wind and that means better shot placement is assured at mid to long range. Now, since shot placement is the most important thing about everything important to successful hunting, smart hunters will go with the .270 over the 30-06.

The .30-06 is based on the 7mm Mauser and was developed after the Spanish-American War. This was due to the shortcomings of the .30-40 (.30 caliber, 40 grains black powder equilavent [just like the .30-30] based on the "new smokeless powder") Krag-Jorgenson rifle. The first cartridge in 1903 used a round nose bullet which was changed to a spire point in 1906 for better ballistics. The designation .30-06 equates to .30 caliber of 1906 and was developed for the 1903 Springfield rifle. All derivatives of the .30-06 are in truth developed from the 7mm Mauser. I have a "Spanish Mauser" from the late 1800's, a nice historical artifact.

Both of them are top quality classic American cartridges. I would not want to be on the receiving end of either. I think most of the time, whatever you’re hunting can’t tell the difference either. The .30-06 does have a military heritage though. That, and hunting with a M1 Garand and a M1903 Springfield - here’s looking at you, grandpa. .270 is basically a .30-06 with a 7mm bullet on top. .270 Bullet diameter is 90% of the .30-06 diameter. Yes, I know, the .30-03 is the father of both the .30-06 and .270. The 7x57mm Mauser is the father of the .30-03…or the grandfather.

A .270 calibre cartridge was among the initial ones tested to become the new military cartridge in the early 1900's, but the .30 cal ended up willing out. Now, 100 years later, a .270 cartridge has been adopted ( .277 Fury). Wonder what would have happened if the .270 won out a century ago ?

I own both 30-06, and .270 win. The .270 win. in my opinion is a better hunting cartridge using a 140 grain bullet. The 30-06 Springfield is superior at 165 grain and higher weight bullets, simply because of available case capacity, for powder. The dividing line between the two cartridges lies at a 150 grain range.
@248Lt1
@248Lt1 17 дней назад
I believe it was Jack O'Connor that said that one of the big reasons the .270 got as popular as it did for deer hunting when it first came out is because almost all of the early .30-06 hunting rounds were loaded with 180 grain bullets which blew right through deer sized game without expanding or barely expanding if it didn't hit something substantial like a shoulder. Left a big exit hole for an easy track, but in PA where I hunt, back when hunting was even more popular, there were a lot more hunters in the woods so if that deer ran even a relatively short distance like 50 or 60 yards another hunter would get a shot at it too and would also be the one to put his tag on it. Meanwhile, the .270 with its much lighter and better expanding 130 grain bullet would more easily drop the deer where it stood or at least within 20 yds. I own and love both rounds.

Confused. The 270 penetrated on edge, so shot center for NOGO. 3006 goes thru - but then retest 3006? Why not repeat the 270? Also - how close is the 270 to penetrating if it makes a difference if it's hitting on edge or center? Point: I have to think the 270 is VERY close to matching 3006 in this test? Also, not many of us are shooting through steel plates - would be more interesting in ballistic gel? Thanks - still enjoying.
