The 150 gr is the "heavy" bullet load in a 270, used more often for game larger than deer, like elk. The 150 gr in the 30-06 is the light bullet load intended for deer. The performance in your plates demonstrate that. A better comparson would be a 130 gr 270 vs a 150 gr 06, or a 150 gr 270 vs a 180 gr 06. I like your videos and like to try the different bullets and loads myself. Keep up the good work.

Awesome video..! The .270 is an excellent caliber, but given the choice I will always go 30.06. Prior to buying my 30.06 I had considered both the .270 & the .280 until I had lengthy discussion with my uncle. What he pointed out and it always stuck with me was 2 things. 1) Any place (even the out of the way stores) that sells ammo will always have some sort of 30.06 on the shelf. 2) Reloading aside.. there are way more options available in 30.06 in factory loads from the 50 grain accelerator to the 200 grain big game load with many in between. Thanks for the video...

Absolutely. 150-grain does not play to the .270's strengths, admittedly a deer can't live on the difference at any sane range.

Not surprised at all by greater penetration from the 270 Win over the 30 06 in spite of folks claiming the 270 is obsolete. I've come to prefer the 270 for my go to cartridge.

I hunt in south Georgia where most use the 30-06 since we they never typically shoot past 300 yards, and need the bullet to dump power and roll in the deer, but me and a friend of mine share land together (Was always my dream) and we have a field that in the sand hills that is from 1000 to 1,500 yards long. I took another buddy from Florida out there one day who had a 30-06, because he hunted in the thick palmettos, but when a deer showed up 700 yards away in that field that bullet went into the deer shoulder and stuck in the out side layer of the first lung. We tracked that deer for 45 minutes, and found him perfectly alive but caught up in some barb wire. Two days later, im back out there, and a thick 8-point walks out at 800 yards! I was shaking not only because how thick his horns were and how big they were, but it was so far away. I entered all my number into my hornandy ballistics calculator app, and took the shot. When through first shoulder, both lungs, and stuck in the other shoulder. He dropped and did this wierd shuffle towards the woods but never made it. 270 is king!

The smaller diameter penetrates further, its easier to push an ice pick into something than it is a #2 Philips screwdriver. My best guess on the loss of lead is the friction heating the bullet up so much it melts the lead and it is liquid. When it stops moving it cools and returns to a solid, but in real small chunks, hence the dust that you see. Keep havin fun...

I'm really partial to the 30 06, because I already have a 303 in my possession, which is my uncle's gun. So I don't really wanna drop caliber sizes all that eagerly. I'm not knocking a 270, I think it's a very good gun, but I like something that's got more punch up close, and does more damage. The only reason I'd consider going with a 270 would be if it's substantially cheaper all round. Ammunition especially. The availability of the ammunition is important too. However, it's really hard to ignore how the 270 doesn't dump its power at longer ranges, and through that many more paper plates because of its narrower caliber, it would naturally penetrate better than the larger one. Penetration is important.

I love my 270.(Browning Bar) But you are correct about damage at short ranges. I was using 150 power points, and had to track a deer way too far considering where it was hit, and had one run about 300 yards before it fell dead, luckily it was running across a big field or his big ass wouldn't be on my wall, because there was no blood trail at all, despite an exit wound. I switched to 130 grain ballistic tips and solved that problem with the quickness. Too me that's the only advantage the ought 6 has on the 270. I did buy a 7 mag for bear hunting, just because the ballistics are so similar the 270, but shooting that rifle is not enjoyable at all, not even on the sled. The thought has come into my brain about swapping the 7 mag for an ought 6, I just don't have the mindset for aim overs, I want to put cross hairs on the target and squeeze one off.

I knew the 270 would win THIS contest. But I ran the numbers on these exact rounds about 6 months ago 😁 I couldn't pick between them so I let the science decide. The 150gr Win SuperX PowerPoint is a very common projectile across a few calibers (30-30, 308, 7mm, 300WM,..etc) and you can find it anywhere for cheap. I think the 270win is just a little more versatile than the 30-06: Shoots flatter, less recoil, better Ballistic Coefficiency (better accuracy at longer ranges). But that's all paper(plates). For any practical shooting within 200 yds, you won't see too big of a difference. Sightly larger wound cavity with the 30-06, and a bit easier penetration on the 270win due to it having a finer point with the same mass. Either way, meat in the freezer!

You're comparing apples to oranges. The equivalent bullet in 30 caliber to the 150 grains bullet in the 270 would have to weigh 185 grains........That is aside from the fact that you are choosing in the 30 caliber a very fast expanding bullet intended for soft game. Your choice in the 270 has a sectional density of 0.279 while the 150 grains bullet in 30 caliber has a sectional density of .226. Sectional density is how you measure the potential for penetration. NOT equal weights in different calibers. but equivalent bullets in different calibers. This is called the form factor. It is crucial in order to properly illustrate your example. In order to go further, you'd have to get a 185 bullet in 30 caliber that goes as fast as the 150 grains bullet in the 270 or you are cheating one or the other because speed isn't the determining factor for penetration. I understand that these are two very popular calibers but the popular weight in 270 is 130 grains. The 150 grains is often used as an elk load. In the 30-06, the elk load is usually a bullet that weighs 180 or 200 grains. Lastly, even the 130 grain bullet in the 270 has a sectional density of .242 which is still superior to that of the 30-06 in 150 grains bullet. The comparison should be between two identical bullets at the same speed. Using a 130 grains bullet in the 270, the equivalent (closest and most popular in this instance) 30 caliber bullet in sectional density is the 165 grains. This would make it an apples to apples comparison. I enjoy your channel and sincerely appreciate all your effort. You also make it fun. I do think however that some ballistics understanding over the long run will help you a little to make your show even more successful. Very sincerely. Paul
@tacman2893
@tacman2893 5 лет назад
Paul Homsy I agree with you on this. It really is an apples to oranges test and SD is important if you want a true test. Still fun to watch but to assume the 270 did better than the 30-06 would not be correct if you are comparing true ballistic capacity. Do it again with a 150 in the 270 and 180 to 190 gr .30 calibre and that will give you a more valid result. Thanks for the video.

The 270 performs amazing with 140 grain bullets. I hand load with Berger 140vld and classic hunter. I’ve used them all. Strange enough the standard 140gr Nosler ballistic tips have proven extremely accurate and consistent. They don’t have the high class appeal of a match king or Berger but I’ll perform better with those. SSTs are also accurate. Brian litz and others have concluded that the jack O’Conner round of 130 is no longer the best. The 140s and even 150 perform amazing in the 270win. My favorite cartridge by far.

Great demonstration. Kinda the point with hunting ammo! Expand and Dump the energy immediately on impact. People get caught up in penetration like it’s the only thing that matters. You get too much penetration capabilities without expansion and you end up with game running off injured and you’re chasing after it!

Up here in Alaska you need a good bullet that will both expand and penetrate. That's why a good bonded bullet is the best choice for big game. For small to medium sized game it doesn't matter all that much. With animals like moose and brown bear they have thick hide and bones. Ive watched a moose take several shots with a 300 rum and walked 20 feet before dying. And I've also watched my dad take down a good sized bull with a 243 with one shot using a well constructed bullet.

Now I don't know about the rest of you but I never thought about Hunting for Concrete Blocks or Paper Plates or a Cast Iron Skillets or even seeing one walk by while in a stand but what I do know is, I'll take my .270 WSM ANY & EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK over any other Caliber out there! The Deer Rifle I started out with was my Dad's old Winchester Model 94 30-30 with a fixed 4x Weaver scope, felt like a modern day Chuck Connors 😁 after I took my first buck I was hooked for life. Even though Dad's old Winchester was a great gun I wanted my own so I started reading Field and Stream, Outdoor Life and Sports Afield magazines, it was those articles and stories by Jack O'Connor on the .270 Winchester that I knew that was the caliber for me. At that time I didn't want a bolt action and never liked a semi-auto rifle so I got a Remington 760 Pump in .270 which I'd probably still be using today had it not been for those boys at Winchester when they come out with the AWESOME Possum .270 WSM. I'm sure a lot of people will say that a .270 WSM is a still .270 but those people would be wrong while all the WSM calibers just matched their counterparts the WSM took the old .270 to a whole new level and into a league of it's own without having to rely on a Belted Magnum case with a 26" heavy Long Action rifle. Simply put the comparing old .270 to the WSM is like a Lady Finger Firecracker to a M80 Firecracker power while keeping it the same size as the Lady Finger.

Enjoyed your plate penetration test between the 270 Win and the 30-06. Given that both bullets have the same weight and similar velocities the fact the 270 has a narrower cross-sectional area makes it easier to penetrate than the 30-06. Results may have been different if the nominal 130 gr 270 Win bullet had been used. That said, I now have a 270 and sold my 30-06 long ago. Still tempted to get another 30-06.

@seamusmclaughlin5916 4 года назад
The penetration is not the story. Bullets are made for hunting, target shooting, etc. If you want penetration? Then use a full metal jacket. For hunting, you want a led core or Barnes ttsx. The best part of this experiment was the fact that the 30-06 expanded quicker and dumped its energy into the animal. A bullet that expands and retains most of its weight is what you want in a hunting bullet. Penetration is not even important.

This was a worthwhile comparison...same basic case and dimensions, correlated power levels, just different bullet sizes. Now you need to do a direct analog of this test, but at the next power level up: 7mm Remington magnum (.284 bullet) and the 300 win mag...again, same basic case and dimensions, just altered bullet sizes in very similar ratio to those in this test.

For Terry H., the.30-06 won not blowing through deeper as the.270 did but dumped more of the kinetic energy in the shorter distance. Meaning more wound channel damage inside the (your) prey animal instead of delivering more the kinetic outside the animal as it passes through the animal. One of my questions is did the .270 bullet have less lead inside the tip giving more penetration and less expansion? And one bit of info is that the U.S. Army never used the.270 as a sniper round. Check out the life history of both cartridges and you find an overwhelming info for both but more for the.30-06 . Now I'm die hard fan of the.30-06, and you may be the same for the.270 and no matter how much trash talk will change this and I hope non of this post drops to that level. But no .270 round has ever stepped out past the 4,000 fps ceiling ( 55 gr. Accelerator ). From 55 - 220 gr. Ammo the.30-06 has done more for longer than the.270 ammo.

A comparison test between the .270 Win and the German 7x64mm would certainly be very interesting. The two calibers are extremely similar. The 7x64mm mostly uses slightly heavier bullets tahn the .270. I love the 7x64, which was disigned by Wilhelm Brenneke more than 100 year ago in 1917.

i like the .270 a little bit more. the 30-06 and .270 have the same overall length but the 270 is a smaller bullet, this means the .270 has a teeny-tiny bit more powder and at distance is going faster, has less surface area so less drag. thats my opinion

Interesting video... I like both cartridges but this is a good way of showing that sectional density does play a huge role in penetration seeing as the 150 grain in the 270 has a much higher sectional density than a 150 grain in the ought 6... That being said you would come closer to similiar sectional densities in both bullets with the 150 grain in the 270 vs the 180 grain in the 30-06. If you get a chance to compare them again in simialir sectional densities that would be an interesting comparison for sure.

After watching several of Your comparisons I am even more convinced. All this talk about calibers is so much as eyewash.Where you hit is what matters,not with what you hit. Careful aiming and avoiding risky long-range shots ist doing the trick,together with proper knowledge of lethal points in game.Mind, Karamojo Bell killed 800 elephants with 7x57 cal.

It’s simple, 3006 for under 500 yd. dumps it’s power sooner and is better in brushy conditions. 270 win for over 500. 7.62mm is less efficient at long range than the 6.8mm “270 win” has better penetration Which is what you want at long range. Especially with elk. Both are fantastic rounds just better at certain things. I own both and love both. It’s America, just own both.
