Hi mate from Oz, hey just an idea... paper plates demonstrate penetration for a given round / gun.... but why not try say pork shoulders with different bullet types and calibres? (depth / wound size etc). Cheers

That gets requested a lot. Pork shoulders are expensive.....and messy 😆😆😆

Hahaha, I go for the heaviest Nosler Ballistic tip available in Varmint version (243). The base hangs together and still gets a fair way in, but the wound channel is spectacular and my one shot kill rate skyrocketed to nearly 90%. Won't "kill" as many paper plates but excellent real world choice.

looks like that 234 would be an O.R. nightmare that is if the subject made it there without bleeding out.

I bought my .270 in 1977, after reading every article that Jack O.Connor wrote. I have killed everything from Black bear to Groundhogs, in my home state of Pennsylvania. I reloaded... 130 boat-tail bullets loaded with 58.0 grains of 4831... shot from my Remington 700. Accuracy was .475 at 100 and 2.125 at 300 yards, (on a good day) but what I can swear to was completely deadly stopping power on everything I shot. All 40+ whitetails with 1 shot kills, Same on all Bear. Never lost an animal, proud to say. But then I was fortunate to be able to choose my shots carefully, most were 100 yards or less, standing or slow walking. Subscribed to this channel today, like the “style” of information and how it was given. Not the “mine is bigger, and always better” that is so abundantly shared. But, much more ... “I don’t know what’s going to happen, let’s find out!”

@@marodriguezsr Any single shot made nowadays is superior to a bolt. But you have to be a good shot to make it work. Lots of practice. But the enjoyment of only needing one shot to bring down your game is immense. And good bragging rites. My own is a 243 in a Ruger #1. The only thing better is my Remington 700 BDL in 22-250. But 22 is too small for most larger game. Unless you are cocky and very good.

I've used both for deer hunting. I prefer the 243 any day for the distance I shoot. (None of my shots are over 100 yards) The 270 always seems to go through the deer before doing the damage the 243 does. I've had to trail deer more often than not with the 270, and the 243 usually drops them where they were standing. The results for farther shots I'm sure are different, but anything under 100 yards, 243 is the way to go!!

I was 8 years old when the .243 was introduced in 1955. By the time I was a teenager, it was every kid's first deer rifle. It was so popular that my state set it as the minimum legal round for deer hunting, at a time when sportsmen ran Fish and Wildlife. Thanks for this video.

The 150 grain .270 is the heaviest bullet commercially loaded. It is designed for penetration on big game up to elk size. The 80 grain .243 is designed for varmints. Ballistically, it would be a more fair comparison to use a 100 or 105 grain .243. Those are at least structurally designed for the smaller species of big game, deer, pronghorn etc.

Todd/ I believe you are right about the 150gr .270. I load 130 gr Nosler Partitions for deer and 160 gr Partitions for elk. Of course I always wait for the boiler room shot to kill and break down an elk with a spine shot so they don't wander into another hunter. I've seen an elk lung shot twice with a .338 win mag and run way too far for my liking. I also like 130 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips (Killer Bananas) for lighter game like Lopes and Yotes. Nice... The .270 shoots super flat and a great at longer ranges. Many a 400yd elk and mule deer has ended up on a dinner table because of it. The .243 is the little engine than CAN. So many whitetail, coyotes, hogs, and even black bear had to bad luck to meet it. My wife loves both her .243 and .270 Howa 1500 Gamemasters rifles. They seem to love the Fusion and Nosler ammo My oldest son is butter inside of 800yds with his Remington 700 ADL in .243.We generally use Federal Fusion 95 gr and Winchester SuperX 100 gr Power-Point. My sons 700 ADL seems to really love the 100 gr pill. I'm getting sub-MOA at 300yds with it shooting that round.

Depending on what I going after. That 130 gr GMX stuff is scooting at around 3190fps. I still choose to take a .308 in the woods. The 168 gr. Nosler Trophy Grade and Ballistic Tip are my pills of choice. The Fusion 165 gr is a winner too.

Your not even comparing oranges and apples .Your comparing oranges and bubble gum . The .243 is a dual action caliber meant to hunt deer with heavy for caliber bullets 95 to 105 grains .its also meant to hunt varmints with lighter bullets meant to fragment. 80 grain .243 is not constructed to hunt deer or other big game animals. Its made to grenade inside groundhogs and does this very well. Thats why it didn't hold together like the .270 . Try shooting a 110 .270 against a 100 grain .243 and results would be reversed.

One, weight whatever remains of the (solid piece of the) bullet, of particular interest with the disintegrated 243, in this example. 80gr - 25gr = 55gr of bullet lost or hiding in the paperplates, for example.

I’m not comfortable reaching out past 300yrds with such a small round but since I live in the Pacific Northwest there is little opportunity to shoot further then that. You need to use a 100 grain lead on the 243 for a better comparison. Hornady 87 grain lead doesn't explode as much as the other brands. I use 100 grain for elk and deer and Haven't had any run on me but it depends on where you heat them too.

Awesome video, only difference I saw was not comparing deer ammo to deer ammo 95 or 100 gr. for .243. As for flatness they both shoot flat so that's basically a no issue, but .270 offers more bullet selections than .243

Shot deer and antellope with both calibers. They both performed well. However with the 243, I was using a 105 Hornady Amax bullet. Hit hard with a fast kill and no exit wound. The 270 tends to go through with a large exit wound. All shots under 400 yards.

I like be both these calipers. Here goes the ballistic nerd part. Most common bullet weights for deer are 130 for 270win and 100 in 243win. With that change brings the speed of 270 to around 3100 and the speed of the 243 down to around 3050 or so. I doubt there is much of a measurable difference in the plates then. Both are very capable hunting rds for deer and Varmints. The both shoot incredibly flat with good sectional density. The 150 gr 270 is a popular choice for elk hunting. Hard to beat either round. Those are some great looking rifles. Good video. My prediction on water jug is 270 wins 6-4

I've used both for shooting wild pigs since I was a kid and have killed over a thousand pigs with each (honestly no exaggeration), culling them here in oz. To start the 100gr 243 bullets are a lot more effective than the 80's and surprisingly with factory ammo the 130gr 270 are more effective than the 150. That being said there is a big difference in stopping power between the 243 and 270. Both will get the job done and are great rounds but pigs normally drop on the spot with the 270 and not the 243. If you want the most effective combo, handload the 270 with a 150 sst around the 3000ft/sec and you will have a combo rivaling any small magnum.

Best bang for the buck in 270 is 130gn. bullet. Use higher grn. bullet for Elk and Goat. 80 Grn. 243 is good for prairie dogs. Deer sized game you go to 120 to 125 grn. bullet. Both cases have parent case of 308/30/06. Main differences are bullet weights and powder charges. If you want a 0-250 yd. deer killer, go with the 243. If you need longer range, go with the 270. Main thing is how good of a marksman are you? 243 is a precision round. You must have a good rifle and a good hand to use it. 270 is a precision round, also. You can kill a Mule deer out to 475 yards if you are good. Good rifle, good rest, and good shooting habits. I hate to see these comparisons of the 243 vs 270 because the cartridges are so close in energy at range. Each has a specific job and best use at range with such and such game. On the flat prairies of the West, I would use a 243 out to 250 yards. In the same conditions but longer range, I would use the 270. And have used the 270. Dropped a buck at 240 yards at a waterhole with one round to the head. Scoped that buck out for 6 months before season and walked the distance to the water hole. Practiced for six months at shooting at 250 yards with the 270. Opening day was a joke. One shot , one buck. Went great upon the trunk of my 67 Mustang. You are playing apples to oranges with this test. Why not test 30-06 against 338? Or 30-06 against 300 Winchester Magnum? This is a farce. Click-bait for semi- knowledgeable shooters.

I run a private ballistics lab and was interested in trying paper plates to start deforming the bullets then letting them slow down in a cloth mess before they come to a stop in a kind of waxy sheets to stop the bullets. I want the bullets to mushroom well but not too much. Do you have any idea how many I might need. I looked at the videos but you kept looking from the back so I can't tell from them when the bullet holes started getting bigger. Second question. Do you think the cardboard style paper plate would be better for my use? I'd stack more of them than the type you use.

I understand that and I’m not bashing the video at all. But if u would like to retest the 243 vs 270 in the future you could run the old tried and true 130 grain bullet in the 270 that’s very common for deer and the 100 grain in the 243 that is most used for deer and have a very true test...the 270 will more then likely still go farther but the 243 will hold together better and be a more fair comparison

I use the 270 for deer hunting. It is a good all around caliber. I rarely shoot at anything over 100 yards and usually closer. It comes in several bullet weights. My scope is sighted for 150gr bullets. Back before I retired, my boss Jimmy Jamieson [like the Scotch - YUMM] and his son were a prairie dog slayers. They swore by the 243 and had a whistling fast load he called his red mist load. When a p'dog popped up and he touched off, all you would see down range was a red mist. He was doing it at ranges over 300 yards. Each to his own I say! I've got nothing against the little critters. Venison is a whole other game. :)

You compared a 243 Varmint load against a 270 moderately heavy mid to big game load.. you should do a test of a 95 gr 243 and a 130 gr 270 velocities between the two should be fairly similar, kinda even the playing field and test to see if you gain anything from the added weight, cost, and recoil of a 270 over the 243.

Thanks for sharing your video. The 150 grain bullet in the 270 caliber is considered heavy for caliber. To have a more equal heavy for caliber bullet in the 243 a 100 grain bullet ought to have been used. So the test is a heavy for caliber bullet against a medium weight bullet for caliber. If a heavier bullet in the 243 was used the velocity would have been more equal to each other. The test may have had a bit different result if both were heavy bullets for caliber or, medium grain bullet for caliber. Both calibers are suitable for most whitetail deer.

One common misconception is that the 270 is a necked down 30-06. In fact, when Winchester developed the round in the 1920's it necked down the '06's predecessor, the 30-03. The '03 had a slightly longer case than the '06, which carried over to the 270. This was a safety measure, as it made it impossible to chamber a 270 in a 30-06 rifle by mistake.

Interesting test media. After showing the velocity of the two,it would be very meaningful to show the energy as well. The .270 has a parent cartridge in the .30-06 and it's energy is almost twice that of the .243. The .243 has it's parent cartridge in the .308 / 7.62x51. The higher velocity round will shoot flatter because it takes less time to cover the assigned range, thus less time to drop on the way to the target. As far as accuracy, I have a .270 Winchester 70 that will cloverleaf at 100 yards and at 200 the group can be covered with a dime. That is if I do my part. Love the .270

Beauty rifles ! I use to use both a .270 win in a Remington 700, .243 win in a Mossberg maverick... performance wise I really couldn't tell the difference. But the .243 was lighter n less recoil so I took more deer with it. But I transitioned to big bore and though heavier with much more recoil I dunno if I would go back to such small calibers. Well this is great info if I am going to hunt paper plates at point blank ranges lol. The more important part is how well do the bullets perform at a specific distance in game. The .270 is going to perform better at a longer range than the .243 because it retains more energy and the bullet will expand properly. I love the .243 it is my personal favorite, but I wouldn't want to shoot a prong horn or something at 600 yards with it out west. The appeal of the .243 is that it is fairly versatile and works great on woodchuck, coyote and deer at medium ranges without having to worry much about bullet drop. I don't buy into the accuracy hype. Any rifle these days be it a .223, .243, .270, 308, 30-06 ect can be extremely accurate with the right ammo.
