What about putting the cable ties together and then just seal them with a heat shrink tube.

Why put Peterson like handles on Sparrows lock picks when you can just buy Peterson lock picks which are better picks to begin with?

As someone who doesn't have any form of power tools I'm glad to see techniques that anyone can apply. All to often some sort of specialized power tool is required to make picks/handles that many people may not have access to. As such, I applaud this clever hack.

I slid my pick into a piece of 6.4mm heatshrink tubing, shrank it with a heat gun, then added a second layer, also shrunk over the top. It cannot get any better than that. Mo.

I've been using heat shrink tubes normally used for insulating wire electronics just heat it up with a lighter and it shrinks tight around the pick handle giving it a rubber like grip it's cheap and looks good too

Ok so I did this and it works great! Instead of glue I used some tape to secure the scales in place, and then I applied a shrink socket. I can now snuggly insert whichever pick I want to use, and the socket gives it a rubber like texture for improved grip.

I could not agree more with your observation about the pick(s) many times times using the none added handles! In a short space of time when picking the leading edge can bite! Into your fingers. Have tried the shrink wrap plastic on a few...not bad. The lolly stick is fine too. Have not attempted the Cable tie technique but its on my list. I have been thinking of the Washer screen tubing as that appears a good fit on many of the picks. However, many thanks for sharing this, as is it leads to good camaraderie in locksmith / lock picking fraternity.

Electrical tape for bulk + heat shrink tubing is my go-to Pure electrical tape gets really gross after repeated use, but with the tubing not only does it not...but you still get to use the tape to get a perfect bulk, also great for different manufacturers that have variation in the pick tang's dimensions

I just did this with 4 sparrow rakes using contact cement. It made a slight mess, and I cannot explain how bad my handles look without using vulgarity. I was saying to myself that I was never going to go through the trouble again, and just use shrink tubing from now on. I LOVE IT. Having that extra 1/2 inch (or 13mm if you are in one of those funny countries) makes it worth the time and effort.

Great idea and perfect timing as I've been looking around for a solution for pick handles. I've found that acrylic stirring sticks from dispensing machines are the perfect fit for my Southord picks. The shorter ones (usually for espresso cups) are even the right length. The only problem is that they are full of holes. Great for gripping but difficult to glue on apart from two solid areas and the whole edge contour of the stirring stick. Anyway, I'll see if your solution works better for me. Cheers and take care.

I used heavy wall shrink tubing on sets like the Tuxedo Royale which don't come dipped or anything and it works great! Regular shrink tubing ends up on the thin side, but the thicker kind ends up like the dipped handles; perhaps a bit thicker. After singing them shut at the end and around the neck of the pick, you're all set! Might be worth checking out as well ;)
@LockNoob

I use marine grade shrink tube with glue inside at about 20mm diameter. When it shrinks, it makes pretty thick comfy handles :-)

You could superglue the flat sides to the pick and then drill 3 or 4 holes through everything. Chamfer the holes with a big drill bit. Then for rivets some brass tubing or thick copper wire. Hammer on your anvil or vise. Knife makers put scales on blades all the time and often very beautifully. I say all this because I thought the striations would have improved grip. Good result in any case. Thanks.

@WilliamMancel
@WilliamMancel 7 лет назад
Lock Noob Hello 😁. I didn't even remember that video until Phred mentioned it. It's obvious that you came upon this on your own, and even if you didn't, it doesn't matter. You put a lot of thought and research into this, and came up with your own conclusions. I didn't have a large cable tie, and that is a better way for a larger pick handle closer to Peterson's types. I will try that on a home brew when I make another one. If we had a 3D printer, it would be easy to copy the Peterson handle, which I also think is a great handle. He only goes part way with the metal handle portion in his picks, according to my magnet. This video came at a great time because I always like to see how people make handles for picks. And reenforcement of a thin pick like a 15 thousandth is also a good idea. The only disadvantage to handles is the bulk they add, if you carry many picks. Excellent video my friend. 👏👍
@FMagl
@FMagl 7 лет назад
Great idea! I've thought the same thing about Sparrows and Peterson. I'd like to try this, but I'll need to look around a bit for the ties. It looks like Amazon sells them in batches larger than I'd ever need for any reason. @_@

You would only have to snip the Cable Tie to a couple of lengths, glue them to the handle and file the corners slightly, it doesn't have to look perfect :-)
@Uniquettt
@Uniquettt 5 лет назад
when I can't sleep I watch lock pickers for Ideas and inspiration. if the pic was heated on its handle end then placed on to the smooth side of the cable tie and something smooth flat and heavy quickly it would press the pick handle into the smooth side of the cable tie those making it become embedded into the plastic if the second cable tie part was put in place at the same time under heavy pressure it would give you a handle with ripples for extra grip if working out side in cold conditions eg. If any space between the two plastic haves they could be filled with epoxy allowed to cure then sanded.Just a idea inspired by your own thanks Lock Noob.

I'm unfamiliar with the Peterson handles, are they hard plastic or soft rubber? Guessing hard? My kit have the sandwiched metal handles which isn't too bad but the edges dig into my fingers so I taped it, works surprisingly well.

Peterson are mostly a hard plastic, but I _think_ they did some rubberised handles too. :-)

OK, thx. I imagine rubber would take away the "feel"? I've screwed up my fingers due to extreme cold so I need all the "feel" I can get.

I really like the brass handles you have btw, how did you do that?

Where do you buy Peterson lockpicks in the UK...I can't find them for the life of me.

Sadly, you can't. I think there is a European supplier, but a lot of people order from lockpicksaustralia due to the better shipping rates :-)

I'm sure its alot to ask two years later.. but do you recall what size zip tie you used? I've got a sparrow tuxedo set in the mail currently and would really like to add handles like this when they arrive. Love the content! Your one creative s.o.b. hahaha

I laugh at these guys that spend HOURS making Cocobolo/Rosewood wood handles and riveting them on with fancy brass rivets then polishing the wood to fine finish then buffing the metal to a mirror shine only to snap the pick two days later....Picks are dirt cheap consumable items, put a down and dirty but comfortable handle on them and call it a day!...

How would one make ergonomic handles? Cast silicone on top of the original handles/metal? Wood and lots of sanding?
@LockNoob
@LockNoob 6 лет назад
You could try polymorph or formable silicone rubber putty maybe? :-)

Lock Noob ok. Sounds like a good idea, just wondering what materials, or composite materials, and methods would work well for creating better handles.

Yes. The softer the handle the less feedback :-)

Looks great! Are the cable ties UV-resistant? I don't know how much of a factor that would be in a typical picking situation but when I used to used cable ties all the time, we had to make sure the ones we used outside could resist UV, otherwise they would tend to deteriorate\disintegrate after a while.

merlin308 black ties usually are UV resistant and white not, carbon black heels block the UV from damaging more than the surface. Although unless you have a habit of leaving them in the sun it shouldn't matter here.
