1. Put the 2 bbl on a good intake manifold with headers and everything else stock to show how much power just the intake manifold cost. 2. Connect the points distributor to the white wire on the MSD box so show how much good ignition is worth. 3. Bowl port the head and put in a street friendly cam to show what a 'comprehensive' build will do. Don't worry about porting the head yourself. Many guys working with these are going to be home porters anyhow. 4. Swap the 2 bbl for the 4 bbl to show how the modified engine responds to more airflow. 5. Boosted runs with a proper turbo. Put heavy springs in the distributor if you want to slow the advance. Personally I'd lock the distributor advance, connect the MSD tach output to the Holley EFI, run the Holley computer in batch fire and have it handle the advance. You can switch to a 4 bbl throttle body then too if you like. Port EFI is a bad idea on a siamese-port engine. Plot out the firing order and you'll see that you don't have even intervals between draws on an intake port. EFI will have worse fuel distribution. So bad it will barely run fuel distribution.
@2011metalmaniac
@2011metalmaniac 4 года назад
efi can be used a siamese ports. if the firing order is 153624 then the injectors can fire 132312 which woud be even.
@feednspeed1835
@feednspeed1835 4 года назад
The 6 wont run into the problem of port robbing that the 4 cylinder engines with siamese ports will have. Even then, short cam timing will reduce or alleviate the issue. The choice of one or two injectors probably doesn't make a big difference. What would be fun, but probably not a great design, would be to blow through three one barrel carbs! LOL

@@feednspeed1835 The cylinder that first draws on one of the end ports will get a lot more fuel than the second cylinder. Plot out the intake valve events on the end cylinders with 80% injector duty cycle and see where the fuel ends up. It isn't pretty.

A lot of us have been waiting for a video like this for years. We have watched videos on performance mods on small blocks, big blocks and ls engines until there coming out of our ears. I have a 62 chev sitting in the barn that I would like to drag out and mod someday and I would like to use the 292 that's in it. The more variants you can produce on 292 mods the better. Have you checked 12 bolt .com, that guy sells and makes parts for these engines, and has a yt channel, and owns a car with turboed 6, a mild cam, and lump port, with a decent intake , I'd go with a 4bbl, or. Twin 1 bbl, or tripple 1 bbl, maybe a twin 1bbl. With a adapter to put a 2 or4bbl holley, for street, a 500 4bbl would probably be a better mpg, and performance carb, that is what I'm planning, making a adapter to go from 2 or 3 1 bbl carbs to a single 2 or 4 bbl, or maybe 2 x 2 bbls. For better distribution, and equal runner length, along with a lump port, and maybe a mild cam, a rv or marine cam, and swap in a 5 speed, should be night and day difference! Keep it under 5grand!

Remember People, the connecting rods in a 292 are weak and the engine has a long stroke, so a rod upgrade needs to be done soon. Summit sell a nice cheap set of H-Beams for 300 bucks (a very quick search). I'm less concerned with the pistons. I would love to see this old girl breaking 500 HP than seeing it blow up short of that.

RODS WEAK??? Ran them for years in a c50 with 5.38 gears so it was roaring 80 % of the time. Cruise at highway speeds was some 4000 rpm plus. That was on the second rebuild. This engine is not weak. It was designed to pull loads in Large Trucks for hours. 5Ton trucks with six cylinders sounds impossible but it works, The old 261 Chevy truck motor would throw a rod. Had one come straight down through the pan and disappear. Piston rod gone and not a bit of damage to the crank.
@johnparrish9215
@johnparrish9215 4 года назад
@@dielauwen Yes, the rods are weak. There is a massive difference between 4000 and 6000 rpm. To put it in Gun terms, it's roughly the difference between 45acp and 44 magnum, a substantial difference.
@Jim_Lawrence
@Jim_Lawrence 4 года назад
@@dielauwen there's a big difference between staying within design limits, even at higher RPM, and doubling or tripling low RPM torque. Low RPM torque production is what kills rods. Same torque at higher RPM is easier on rods. Look at diesel rods once for example. Piston speed is hard on pistons, and sometimes rods.
@oliverscorsim
@oliverscorsim 4 года назад
IV seen stock rod 292 turbo motors make more than 500 for sure. Rods are weak but the block is a bigger issue.. they like to rip the ear off in the back left corner that a head bolt goes to. I can't say IV seen these rods go in a boosted set up that didn't rev too high. I know IV seen plenty rip that ear off. Long rods are great alot less rod angle great for boost. And I can't say IV seen one of these with ring gap break a piston either. Rich since everyone is referencing the Barra how about the American version the atlas from GM I'm dieing to see what it does in your hands.

This is an awesome series, thanks for all the effort you put in it! The bore spacing on these 6 cylinder engines is 4.4”, just like a sbc, (or as LS) if I recall. There were some efforts to creat a cylinder head by sawing V8 heads and furnace brazing them together once upon a time. I’m wondering if anyone has a modern head design with good combustion chambers and good individual ports. Those long rods and heavy pistons are likely to hold rpm down no matter what you find, but I’m looking forward to what you can show us. Let’s see more than the PowerNation build!

It wont be easy to create port injection. They don't fire evenly. #1 fires, #2 fires 480 degrees later, and #1 repeats again only 240 degrees later. With that big siamese intake hole, #1 will be very lean, #2 very rich. You will have the same problem with 5 and 6. I think blow through is your answer unless you want to create a port divider.

Knowing cylinder distribution would be awesome, and a great way to pick up safe power. Not saying anything you don't know. I will say though, you are doing this for the fans and the guys who have these in their cars. Almost no one will mod for distribution. Unless you are going to make a manifold to sell, just testing what makes power is all that's necessary. Would be good info to know if one intake distributes better than another, but, most won't care. I'd like 4 set-ups: 1. Bolt on NA 2. Bolt on Boost 3. Built bottom end for high RPM NA 4. Boost the built bottom, massive low RPM torque and a good average power and RPM range. How you find these "Recipes" is really fun to watch. Seeing this on a 300 Ford too! Miss mine.

Love your vids! I would love to see tests of the manifold on stock and ported heads before cam change but that may not really show anything. As far as injection I would just go with throttle body injection. Or maybe run the injectors upstream on the runners for each pair of cylinders. Maybe about 8 inches from the valves. Go with full control of the ignition. It'll kill the engine before mixture issues. keep testing.

Your Aussie intake manifold will give you equal fuel distribution. Hundreds of of hours were spent on that intake's design. Your lump port head is a must, you'll pick up a ton of flow. If you want to do port injection then you'll want to see if you can borrow a head that's built from 2 SBC heads, that's when you'll get into your crazy power numbers. We won't get tired of this 292 stuff so don't be concerned about how long your videos are. Before you pound on the 292 anymore, check on the rod bearings. You have some great ideas. Port injection and timing control is the way to go. Size the turbo and make this the stump puller it was meant to be. A ported head would be interesting it see how much more you can squeeze out of this.

Do the mods in a the order most people would do them. Intake manifold shootout first with headers. Then cam. Then headwork. Then everything else.

You could run tighter advance springs to bring total timing in later. Build a sheet metal intake with wide pattern injectors and an msd ignition so you can tune the timing table. I think this would be a cool project to have a shop that has a rotler cnc do the dimple port on also. Veicomer has been making big power with dimple porting for years.

I know it’s a lot to ask, but a intake test stock and modified would be awesome! I’d also love to see a open vs dual plane and maybe even a multi carb setup! But blow through multiple carbs would be a nightmare to setup

Seriously great job Richard , love this series on the 6 banger already & am really impressed by the creative mods so far . I personally would try simply matching & porting the std manifolds & a good head port first because it would be the first stage most guys would try with boost before spending big bucks on go faster goodies , then go onto cams , better manifolds , heads & bottom end etc .

Baffle the floor of the intake just below the carburetor. You will need to either place temp or Air/Fuel probe at each exhaust port with headers. You will need to test different baffles until you get even distribution. Test stock to see which cylinder needs more fuel. The baffle can be screwed down for quick change. Love your videos. Thanks for what you do.

EFI!!! I love your idea with that! I agree entirely! Distribution can really be an issue on the long 6. But with that solved the sky is the limit. I love inline 6 builds for the torque they provide as well as the long dependable lifespan they carry. But they are often overlooked. Thank you so much for building one and doing so in such a thorough manner! I say EFI long runner intake 2 injectors per runner placed early in the runner and take it from there. Can’t wait to see the development!

Can't wait for the rest of this series, PLEASE do a 225 slant 6 next. I have one in a 1962 speed boat, it's had a full rebuild with a 500 Holley and Cam. I'd love to throw a turbo at it. Love your work. Matt.

I'd would be interested in seeing the aftermarket intake with the two barrel, headers, RV cam, and stock ignition. I would also like to see the header fitted with individual wideband O2 sensors for each cylinder to see how bad the mixture distribution is initially and then after you create your fuel injection intake.

If you start out with the cheapest and/or most obvious upgrades and go up from there in steps. That's how I have to do it. I've got a family to take care of.

I think it would be interesting to get as much H.P./Torque from the factory parts ie ported and shaved heads maybe a n RV cam, ported stock intake etc. then start adding pistons, roller lifters, Offy intake, then turbo/N2O. Either way, you won't go wrong and we'll love it.

Timing advance was always tuned by changing springs on the centrifugal advance. Points gap should also be set using feeler gauge, points cam also has duration, on bikes changing this and using better coils could produce significant power.

Love the other guys series! I’d love to see other inline sixes like a Ford 300, Mopar 225 (or even better a short stroke 170, but good luck finding one), and AMC 258 (or 4.0 or 4.0 stroked to 4.7). Or how about an International 345 v8 out of a Loadstar 1700 school bus... gotta be about half a million rusting away somewhere out there!
@MrTheHillfolk
@MrTheHillfolk 4 года назад
I was thinking the later buses had a 549 international,late 70s stuff. Haha I got to see a few of those older busses that had a standard trans when I was a kid ,when the new bus broke they brought out the antique and it was a hoot to see the driver bangin gears 😄

170s aren't hard to find. Early A bodies and some later ones had em. Ya cant look in trucks and vans, those are all 225s.
@stevelacker358
@stevelacker358 4 года назад
MrHillfolk never saw a school bus with a 549 or even a 392, internationals around here were all 345s, Fords were 370s, Dodges were 361s... but then this is flat country, mountain regions might’ve needed more. Shifting was hilarious looking with 3-foot shifter lever. Automatics started showing up in the early 80s, and by the late 80s they were all diesel. I did run across an old generator set in an auction yard that had an IH 549.
@donellmuniz590
@donellmuniz590 4 года назад
@@stevelacker358 I saw a 549 once, it looked to me exactly like a 345 or 392, just twice as big! For medium duty trucks, dump trucks, "straight" trucks, back when they didnt all have diesels. The old Ford 474/509/534 Super Duty gas engines were similar. The one I saw was rated at only 200hp, but it was mounted in a 69-era big IH farm tractor! I'm sure the tractor originally had a BIG 4 or 6 cylinder, maybe even a DT466. This particular tractor was built for shows, and blew people's minds.

Donell Muniz when Dodge was building heavy trucks (through 1975), they used industrial versions of the slant 6, 318, 361, and 413. But they also installed the International 549 and 477 where bigger engines were needed. All those engines were marketed as Dodge “Power Giant” engines. The 361 and 413 had huge water pumps and different heads with different coolant flow than the car/light truck versions.

I always heard the older guys talking about the old slammin straight6 's drag racing in deuces or Camaro and they say you gotta get an intake and go full roller and balancing tryn to get some rpms. But then they can pull the wheels! Several guys say worked over Camaros w 250s gone into 12s. I'm over 40 so that impresses me...

You are pretty great with your logical explanations of why you want to do what. I am always right there with you. If I had one of these the first (or maybe second, after exhaust) thing I would want to do is change the intake and install a 4-barrel. I would want to know how much power that would get me. After that I would want to put on a better head. I already have the better intake so no sense going back to test the new head with the stock intake. I would want to know how much more power the head would get me after I already have improved intake and exhaust. Keep up the good work!
