Hello Jerry, Have you done any recent videos on how to create courses with Lidar?. The ZIP file you reference in your video no longer appears when you search for products on USGS site. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Also, the TGC course "Royal South Wales" does a really nice job of putting a course upon actual lidar data that in real life could NOT otherwise be used. The actual site is a protected wildlife & coastline area in Wales. So this is chance to have a golf course in a great location, while the real site can rest easy about never being disturbed by people. In that regard it's win-win.
Thanks Jerry! When I first learned how to use Chad's tool, I was uploading some of the local terrain around the lakes and rivers where I grew up. I'm inspired to go back and find those files. I was a rookie designer back then but now have many of hours of experience in the design tool.
Tried to download zip file but it says it no longer supports google browser, so I tried edge and internet explorer 11 and also the same problem. Any tips on this? Thanks
@@mr.goodokay5096 there is a work around i figured out and think I may have committed on how to do it. Its been awhile now so can't remember what it was that I clicked on but after it opens you have to copy to url and open it in explorer or some other browser

A couple of things I didn't mention or for clarification: -Once you publish the course in TGC2019, then you have to fire up 2K21 course designer and port the course over to the new platform, then you can edit and do what you like with that version. -Also, I have no trees in the example video to show the terrain and will likely leave it that way to see the topography easily. Once I have a basic routing of the holes complete - I will go into the designer settings and put the auto-created trees to maximum, and then go in and start clearing tee, fairway, green locations. I will then have a solid background and only need to plant the foreground (and maybe some distant vistas) -The terrain I used is pretty steep. I noticed that the 2K21 course designer doesn't like elevation changes over 1000 feet - and neither do golfers that have to walk it. Of course, you can find terrain a little flatter than what I used in this example. -as I noted, this method requires using TGC2019 to first make the course; there is a chance still that Chad's Tools could be updated and then everything I showed could just be done in 2K21 (fingers crossed)
Do you know Jerry if importing lidar can be done with chads tools now for 2K21? If not I have a local custom course plot made with lidar in pga tour 2019 but I can't publish it because it says it has no holes. So how can I get it into 2K21 for editing? .... You mentioned a python script for direct converting to 2K21 is this still an option? Hope you can help as I'm stuck and don't see any point continuing unless I can get it there as my son who requested me making it only plays with 2K21.
Jerry, I published my lidar based course in TGC 2019 which I generated with Chad"s tools and published it, as you noted, and then imported it into PGA Tour 2K21 and it shows up fine and I can edit, no problem, but 2K21 will not allow me to play test it, which is a BIG problem. The program just freezes and I have to Task Manager out of it. Any Suggestions?
This is incredible. I'm a fairly new designer so quite happy to sculpt from the built-in tools until I get a bit more competent and have a couple of courses published, but I love the idea of being able to accurately map my home course and play it. Subscribed to your channel and will certainly hit you up if I need any help in doing any of this. Really appreciate you putting this up there and offering to help budding designers.
Super interesting vid, designing is not for me, but i have so much respect for those who take the time to do this. It is what makes this game so great.
No kidding. I may need gondolas to get golfers and carts from hole to hole. It was more of a test to get the lidar working - now I have some work ahead.

In case anyone who can help sees this, i get an index error boolean index did not match indexed array along dimension 1; dimension is 643 but corresponding boolean dimension is 696. What does that mean and can it be fixed?

Thanks for the in depth series of videos. I am a complete novice to 2k21 (currently playing the game on a Nintendo switch). If i am going to try mapping and re creating a local course would i be best served to purchase 2k23 or can i use 2k21 and the switch platform? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi i have a course where several holes are played twice from different teeboxes, how do i achieve this ?? I thought i'd worked it out but upon replay the game doesn't recognise that the ball has been putted. Any ideas. Thx in advance
So I have started work on my first LIDAR course and I have noticed a lot of lag when I try to do anything. Even when I place a tree it takes like 5 seconds to register, so it is very slow compared to the course I designed from scratch. I assume that it is the LIDAR causing the problems. Have you had this problem? I am on PC with a slow internet connection.
Great video Jerry, however I've run into a problem. following your instruction and doing step by step when I do the search products I do not get any LAS files. Only shows LAZ files. Please help.

I do have a python script that will convert the file exported directly to 2K21 Designer. Let me know if you need it - or if you aren't comfortable with python/scripting then I can convert files as well, if you need a hand.
Is there any specific reason, other than saving time, for importing direct using Python? Is there any loss of fidelity in the data when porting from 19 to 21?
Thanks dude, just curious, USGS will not allow me to download with any browser...do you need wget or something like that to get the USGS las file to dl?
I had this problem in the past and I just kept trying with different browsers and at different times. I'm not sure what causes it, or even what the exact fix is, but I've had this problem from time to time.
My first course was a recreation of a course that I built and was superintendent at in Northern Ontario Canada. The course is called Island Springs Golf Resort in the 2K21 PGA TOUR software. My first fictional course was Storm King Golf Resort, then my most known course is Rattlesnake Gulch. My last course was Miramichi River Golf Retreat. My next course should be out this November.
Hi Jerry. To start, thanks very much for making this video. I have a quick question for you regarding the final step in the lidar tool process, specifically the export step. All of the steps before that worked flawlessly, however, when I tried to export the course it did not save anything in the .course file. Have you ever run into that problem? If so, do you have an easy solution? I also noticed in the log that Open Street Maps server was busy, would that have anything to do with it? Thanks for your time!
I'm guessing you did everything right. The problem is that Chads Tool doesn't make a file that 2k21 can use. There is a python script that I have that can convert that file to something that will work in 2k21. I can do the conversion this weekend if you like. Just email me the file and I'll take care of it for you.
Hi Jerry, thanks for this video as well as your others. I'm picking up a few good tricks. I was wondering if you have any Canadian sources for the lidar data? I'd like to replicate a few courses near Calgary as well as some from Cape Breton Island. Thanks again
I don't have any off the top of my head but there is lidar available in Canada. It's not in one single spot like the USA but spread amongst the provinces. I think NS has pretty good coverage and I suspect that part of AB will as well. Just google Canadian Lidar and you'll start to see the various sources.
Thanks Jerry. Great video. I have just started to replicate my home course however in Canada, Lidar data is almost impossible to find. Is it possible to import splined data from OpenStreet for the layout and then manually adjust elevation later?
Yes that's right. I did that for a course that I built in Northern Ontario that didn't have any Lidar data. You can use Chad's Lidar tool - just skip the lidar part of the process and just import the openstreetmaps info. I'm hoping to do a video on that this week.

Thanks Jerry, good stuff. Coincidentally, I recently tried using Chris's tools to do the same kind of thing. But I ran into an error (at about where you were at 15:40 in the video) saying that I needed to provide that "EPSG projection" number. Apparently some files contain that data and others don't. It looked like you were prepared to deal with having to enter a number at that point. What would you have done if leaving it blank hadn't worked? Thanks!
Sometimes it's buried in the data - in an XML file. The other thing I've tried is to use the UTM code. Somewhere in the data, there will be a UTM code (it was 17 in the case of this video). So I have found that entering an EPSG code starting with '269' and then adding the UTM code at the end. So if leaving it blank didn't work then I would have tried 26917. I hope that helps.
@@JerryShields Thanks. No sign of anything useful in these XML files. Just for the hell of it I decided to try 26917 and it was looking good for awhile before finally crashing. Thought that might work since my chosen location is in eastern Tennessee, only a couple hundred miles south of yours. I'll have to try different locations. Using LIDAR this way is much more interesting to me than doing an existing course.
Thanks for the heads up on this, none of the EPSGs that I had used in the past worked for a course in the Dallas area, after reading you guy's comments I did a Google Search for "utm zone dallas texas" and it returned UTM Zone 14, added 14 to the 269 (26914) and that worked like a charm.
Find the metadata related to the Lidar look for an xml file open it and look for ESPG. I've been working with courses in the NW of the UK and the ESPG for that area is 27700 it's worked fine on nearly 10 courses.
If you are using USGS data then you will often find a text file in your download. If you scan it then you will often find an EPSG value to use. In my recent Lidar courses, I just left it blank and Chad's Tool figured it out. Also, try googling EPSG value for Lidar files - you should find a few other ideas.
@@JerryShields Found the following site and searched by state and found the values. Thanks.. Still having a problem. when I create the course after mapping and splining everything in OpenStreetMap the terrain and elevations are good with some trees, but the holes are not there and none of the other things I splined out.
@@JerryShields i've found ESPG numbers in the metadata for the lidar open the xml file and scroll through until you find the reference for ESPG and you will find the number.

I apparently need an EPSG number because this is what Chad's Tool is spitting out: "Processing: USGS_LPC_WV_FEMAR3_Southcentral_2018_D19_e1179n1800.laz Could not find metadata for USGS_LPC_WV_FEMAR3_Southcentral_2018_D19_e1179n1800.laz. Could not determine lidar projection, please report an issue and send this lidar and metadata Alternatively, look for something called EPSG Value in Metadata and provide EPSG." My question is simple, where do I get this EPSG number?

This sounds interesting, but I'm not sure there's enough free time between now and Christmas to get this done. I am still working with Ontario based Lidar data to get it into the software. Must be the life of the party. The old Lidar courses weren't made for console. Clowns at HBC allowed them on console with courses that had tremendous amounts of objects. PC it was fine. (I didn't use a mouse or keyboard to play. That would be cheating, along with other methods.) Moving on, the reason we don't play Lidar courses is that, lidar course are just distances. They aren't really elevations and matches to real world courses. Take a hypothetical Austin Country club. It looks and plays nothing like the actual course. The fairways are all over, not the width, length to scale and undulations are all off. Roads and trees off course are one thing. The actual gameplay is paramount. The scale and especially the elevations are the key. Then deal with if the gold shop has a painting of a fisherman on the wall. Real terrain and using that with the software available is the hard part. Also all Lidar is just distances. I've yet to see one Lidar course in 30 plus years of gold video games to be even 2% of actual accuracy. They say lidar and you have massive sloping narrow fairways, inaccurate fringe, rough, layouts and definitely greens. You go on most, (even the top guys) and it's a meat slicer green or something that couldn't hold a ball, if you spun it with an racing boat propeller. Just unplayable/untested stuff. The day I see a proper lidar course, that is even 10% accurate, and I've played most of the top ones, I'll "owe you a Coke.". Let's so you translate any of this to the actual game and publish it.
