@@Jean.A.squirrel Thanks, Jean. I am A Ninja, and I approve this message : )
As a mechanic, you won't get indicator lights for the hubs engage or disengageing. It's gonna be for the transfercase engagement. I'd check that manual linkage for the 4wd lever to transfer case to make sure it's actually fully engaging or disengageing as it sounds like it's not fully traveling or actuaiting allowing the gears to grind when half way point. These linkages can slip if cable or threads cam move if jamb nut becomes loose ,or cable stretching. Just something I'd be looking at.
Good suggestion. Amazing how hundreds of comments and only a few people with helpful solutions. They just want instant gratification...... if he fries an actuator or transfer case, or diff, he will be out thousands.
I can't remember exactly, since his van is a 4x4 conversion, but I know GM used diff actuators in the gmt-400, 800, 900, and some newer trucks. Not exactly sure if his van has it but they are definitely a headache. When they don't engage properly, in 4hi or 4lo, the front right axle doesn't engage. So, no 4wd. I've experienced this in an older Silverado I had but didn't have any grinder sounds. The grinding sounds more like a transfer case issue, like mentioned above.
That is an invaluable tip! I love to hear when mechanics chime in on issues seen in a video. I see it on some farming videos, related to tractors and equipment.
@@GeekyDad84 On these 4x4 Van conversions they generally use manually shifted transfer cases. There is still an axle disconnect system on the front differential but that does not sound like the issue. I agree with @posersk8er183 , it sounds like a linkage issue. Possibly a broken shift fork inside transfer case.
I find myself really needing to see that Rocko is ok after everything. Like just a “here she is, she’s fine.” I did hear her bark at the end so that was good
I love to see Rocko's silhouette or shadow when you are skiing into the sun and you can see his floppy ears blowing in the wind while he's in your coat. Love that dog!
We just flew from Ontario to Vancouver and back and I looked down at the mountains wondering if you and Rocko were there.somewhere. Wow, what a great video.
I so admire your courage, Simon. Not only for the tricky downhill ski but also for camping out in the middle of nowhere on the side of a mountain alone with Rocko. And as always, the drone shots were so epic.
Simon your ability to capture such epic moments on your adventures is so impressive. The drone shots set your channel apart from all the rest. Great job my friend. Safe Travels Amigo
I'm a fairly new subscriber. I went back and watched some of your old videos. Wow very impressive ,you're an amazing young man. And of course you have an awesome little dog . Safe travels thanks for showing us parts of Canada I will never see.
This may be long winded. Your front axle should have a ‘front axle disconnect’ (not sure of the year of vehicle your front axle came off of). When you pull the transfer case shifter into 4WD the transfer case spins up the front driveshaft to match the rear driveshaft speed, then the ‘front axle disconnect’ engages and connects your 2 front axles (left and right) together. And now 4WD works. The Front axle disconnect works by separating one of the front axles with a splined collar, usually passenger side. When in 2WD the front axle and differential stop spinning, but your axles keep spinning with the front tires. By separating the front axles with the disconnect, the fixed axle spins the stub axle inside the front diff case in the opposite direction. What you are hearing is the front axle disconnect failing and trying to lock the front axles together while the stub axle and wheel axle are Turing in opposite directions. So could be actuator failing or wiring going to actuator failing. I’d start with replacing the actuator. And be careful buying cheap knock off ones. They fail fast.
If you look on the passenger side of your front differential you should see a wiring harness going to a solenoid looking thing. That should be the front axle disconnect.
Another amazing Foresty adventure!! Thanks for the view of the bay where my cabin is to the North, it’s down the lake in the far bay, Esplanade. Will be there this weekend!!😃. Cheers man, stay safe out there you and Rocko.
When switching from 4x4 to 2WD, try this... STOP - shift trans to NEUTRAL - shift T-case to 2WD - shift trans to REVERSE - back-up until light goes out - shift trans to DRIVE - go forward and ensure proper disengagement.
Rocky e Rocko she lives with this dude, he hikes and he skis and floats in a tube. he cooks a mean dish but he cant catch a fish!! sung to the Foresty Forest theme song
You know, he DID catch a fish in one episode several years ago. This past week, I have been trying to find that specific video, but no luck so far. I will let you know when I find it!
Looks like skis were a great investment. Dude you are livin’ the dream of many of us. Seems that your van has more than its share of mechanical issues. Researching other vans, I’m not convinced there’s anything much better out there.
The Hell with fast pace noise and the hustle and grind of hectic city living. This is what it is all about life experiences beautiful country, and oceans and hills .Forest I bet you wouldn't trade it in for anything.Awesome
A man who loves his privacy and goes deep into the woods to find it and looks back and there are 75,000 people tagging along behind him 😱🙃 A John Muir of the 21st Century! ⏳
Congratulations, Foresty, on Summit #210 and to Rocko for Summit #64 on Cupola Mountain! 🎉 The views and scenery up there were truly spectacular. I am soooo glad that you got back up to Canada when you did in order to get into backcountry skiing this spring! These skiing videos are a huge amount of fun to watch, and I am sure that you are having a blast producing them. Sorry to hear about the van. I hope that you can find the right person to fix it without too much difficulty. The stew looked delicious!
Idk what chevy (or the aftermarket parts it uses) but ford uses vacuum actuators to retract the front hubs. Usually a vacuum leak, bad solenoid or a bad check valve.
EASY SWAP TO MANUAL LOCKING HUBS ..most offer vacuum so you don't have to get out of the truck and l;ock your hubs .. ford with a Cummins with a Aliston
So, is there a pathway to argue that Foresty forest should get another rig. He’s got 400k people watching why not pool the dough together and help him build another van. Or?
These 4x4 conversions usually use as many OEM parts as possible, basically using components from a GM pickup. They generally use manually shifted transfer cases as they are much easier to adapt into a vehicle that was never 4x4 from the factory. GM uses an axle disconnect on the passenger side axle shaft. With an open differential by simply disconnecting one axle only the differential gears spin going down the road, but the ring and pinion gears stay stationary along with the front driveshaft.
lol taking a perfectly working car into the shop reminds me of when my AC was out for an entire year. The next spring rolls around so I finally get off my ass and make an appointment. I shit you not THAT MORNING the ac kicks on. I still go in and insist to the guy that "there is something broken" but all I get is a tutorial on how to use ac smh my head.
For your own backpacking meals, you can buy freeze-dried ingredients and then package them yourself (you can buy the mylar bags too and seal them with an iron). It works out to be about half the price of the pre-made ones and you get to put in exactly what you want.
Holy moly, I want a burrito so badly now! That is not what I was expecting from a Foresty Forest video, but it's better than the heebie jeebies I get from acrophobia by proxy.
There's nothing better than that chewy, steamy tortilla.. 😋 I love the pan toast of the burrito as well. I used to cut it in half, place in shallow plate, a few tortilla chips dripped with water alongside, add [my pref hanañero] the hottest salsa from this Mexican market all over, nuke for a minute or two. Omgaaahhhhd, talk about a scrumptious stretched out meal. Mind you, the burro was well loaded in the first place, so easy to portion into two decadent parcels of pure joy. I'm wayyyyyy overdue. Sigh. Cheers to delicious food. ❤❤❤
Love the addition of the skiis to your summits. I've got friends and family singing Foresty Forest all the time. I think you have 10 new subs recently just from the jingle!
There is a solenoid on the transfer case that goes bad. The grinding noise is when the transfer case is between gears. That happens sometimes then you are switching between 4h and 4l. You should replace the solenoid with a manual cable. The electric shift always breaks on gms. Just a thought. Love your videos!!!
Thanks! I appreciate the content! Be safe buddy. We have a burrito place like that in Chicago of all places. It’s not advised to eat them while standing. LOL!
That felt like the shortest 17 minutes and 48 seconds of any Foresty Forest episode. The footage you captured during the ascent, your brief stay at the summit, and the relatively quick descent were absolutely REMARKABLE. BTW, this latest adventure of yours inspired me to hop on the spin bike, re-watch the video, and then cook up some beef stew ... well past midnight!
