For those who think using LSL stud framing is a bad idea and that exposure to water during construction will ruin them, this is obviously not the case. It's engineered lumber, engineered using waterproof adhesives and wax coatings to withstand normal water exposure during construction. They add cost, but are great to work with and will give you perfectly straight walls, which is valuable for kitchen cabinet and counter installations. No shimming, no crowning, no cull pile.

We were staggering studs like that in the mid 70's. We put 1" foil faced polyisocyanurate on the outside. No analysis of how well it worked but, we had clients that were willing to pay for that detail.

Hey Steven @stevenbaczekarchitect9431, I try to watch all of your videos and I remember the early construction videos of “Riverside” but I had a question in regard to its wall assembly. It was a 2x4 staggered stud 24o.c utilizing a 2x8 base & top plate. It was also utilizing LSL studs and plates if I remember correctly. My question is on the 2x4s being spaced 24 o.c. What are the guidelines on this or how does code view it? Could that only be done because of the structural LSLs in use or could you do that with standard dimensional lumber given that the structural wall assembly is technically 2x4 12” o.c. at that point? I just didn’t know about sheathing it since the outside walls are 2x4 24o.c. spaced but maybe it doesn’t matter since they share the same bottom and top plates? Maybe that would only be a problem in double wall assemblies? I really like this wall assembly because I can imagine no holes for electrical, and very easy rockwool batt insulation utilizing 2 layers of 3.5” 24o.c. batts! Love to hear your thoughts!

What are the pros n cons to this method? I am thoroughly intrigued

Usually doing a staggered stud on exterior would be to prevent thermal bridging, but since they are using Zip R sheathing it seems like a bit of a waste. A big con is the extra labor and material expense. Pros would be slightly more insulation in the wall and better sound proofing. I always like Steve showing the details.

@Cold Steel Rails While I have your brain...compare n contrast studs 24" on center with 16". I'm planning on building a house soon. I'm not a novice. Me n my dad built his house 30+ yo. I'm considering 2x6 studs for the perimeter walls. Thank you in advance.

@@nonsequitor807 There is a lot of info out there on this topic. Look up "advanced framing". More houses are using 2x6 exterior walls now because of updated energy codes to allow for more insulation area to meet required R value. Steve had a very good in-depth video on wall assemblies in one of the Build Boston series videos I think it was. Matt Risinger also has some video comparing different wall assemblies and cost/value.

Is anybody going to discuss (or notice), that those are OSL studs not a regular 2x4?? I personally am not a fan of OSB because it's just not as sturdy as plywood, roofs are really spongy nowadays and you can see the rafter lines in new houses because the OSB is sagging between the rafters. Everything is built to minimum standards, and it shows to an old fart like me. Get those studs wet and I bet you have a real problem on your hands, or maybe even your head! Lol!

Yep ur absolutely correct, these idiot builders nowadays use cheap labor cheap products & go by minimum code. Then charge a fortune 4 their trash.

There should be rigid insulation 2" thick on the 'outside' facing edge of the stud carrying the insulation. Otherwise, the 24" batt insulation will not 'bridge' all along the wall. The batt's 'end' should butt up against the rigid 2" insulation and form a 'solid' wall of insulation. (For the life of me, I can't imagine how those studs are better than traditional 2X4 2 and better fir/hemlock. I agree with another commentator that if you get a little bit of water in there, you will rue the day you installed them. Especially on the window sill; that is just begging for trouble.)

Amazing, I want to save $100 dollars on energy bill a month and I would like to spend 200K in advance to recoup my money in 100 years. Savvy investment.

The most interesting thing about sarcasm, the one being sarcastic, in fact has the least amount of knowledge concerning the subject at hand - sarcasm is used in lieu of an intelligent conversation to provide a certain level of satisfaction to make up for the ignorance of the subject at hand..........Savvy thoughts.....
