YES! I almost lost my sanity after Ida. Living in a home down to the studs, no kitchen for 1 yr, dealing with contractors in your home…when they show up, dealing with pets, price gouging, supply shortages, and not to mention fighting with insurance companies. Worse year of my life. Hurricanes hit in 1 day and devastate for so long after.

I arrived to help a couple of weeks after Ian. I couldn't believe how F'ed up the traffic still was. One of my supervisors actually yelled at a cop who happened to pull up alongside our car after being stuck in traffic (again). But he seemed to know is was a good hearted ribbing. Good luck. I've already advised my friends and family to move. We moved north to Erie in 18 and love it. No palm trees yet, but we now get surfers in around Christmas.

My area in central Louisiana was hit twice by hurricanes in 2020. No power for weeks, no cell phones worked, no home phones, no local radio or TV. Satellite TV worked if you had power but nobody had money to keep putting fuel in generators and there was no place to get gas until roads were cleared. People ran out of fuel when it did become available and lost all their food.

We took a direct hit from Ida and I said never again, but here we are…still finishing rebuilding the house. To hear forecast like this fills me with dread. We know it’s not if but when it will happen again. A lot of ppl stayed and regretting it, and like you said, they had to end up leaving anyway…no gas, no running water, no power, no municipal/health services. We were away for 4weeks after Ida. Ugh😑

Laura destroyed my home, the home I was raised and living in.. that storm bullseyed my place. I recorded a barometric pressure of 946 millibars, which is the threshold for category 5 storms, as the center of the eye moved overhead. I have no doubt that the wind I saw and experienced was at least 140-150mph, if not higher. It was absolutely wild to see the wind blowing that hard. My place was approximately 35 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico. So the storm was already dying and had been over land for 2 hrs before reaching my location, yet the pressure was 946 millibars. That tells me that Laura was indeed a Cat 5 but was labeled the highest possible Cat 4, which is bs. They knew it was more severe than they were saying bc whenever a Cat 5 makes landfall, the funding and federal response is much higher.

I don't blame you and that's why I stay in Augusta GA don't have to worry about any impacts from Hurricanes except for some wind & rain and the tornado threats on their right front quadrants when they make landfall on the Gulf Coast States like Florida Panhandle or the Gulf Coast of Alabama or even before they make landfall on the Gulf Coast depending on the size of these storms?? we don't have to worry about the flooding in my neck of the woods since we live on higher grounds but we do have to worry about the winds and the tornado threats which isn't too bad unless you don't stay in a sturdy structure? as far as the tornado threats? we really don't have to worry about those threats since the chances of getting hit by a tornado are pretty low especially in Hurricanes and Tropical Storms

We could see the sky in the living room and the porch was destroyed. My camper is between hills so it`s actually safer. When I got my stimulus FINALLY in November and Social Security I bought solar batteries for my freezers and a small fridge and eventually got one that can power a tiny window air conditioner enough to cool off plus a cheap gas generator. You can't rule it out, but another major hurricane hitting SWFL would just feel like too soon. Then again, Wilma struck the year after Charley did. SWFL has had four major landfalls in the last 20 years: Charley (2004), Wilma (2005), Irma (2017), and Ian (2022). I believe that before Charley, you would have to go back to the 1960s to find another major hurricane landfall in SWFL. You cannot use these as an average rate of recurrence, however; hurricanes will go where they want to go, so you always have to prepare. Not to mention, it doesn't necessarily take an actual landfalling hurricane in the region to cause damage.

I don’t want to sound rude but I think you’re doing too much fear mongering… The 2022 was also predicted to be hyperactive, and it wasn’t the case we were struggling. I find it pretty irrevelant to show sea temperature anomalies map from 30 years ago and compare it now like you did. It’s obvious that all seas and oceans are getting warmer. Obviously the average calculated is outdated so the whole planet can look above average now. It doesn’t mean we gonna have 30 names storm every year, I just think we need to have a new average now. Yes it can mean more fast intensification but not necessary hyper active season every years. And again I think the whole notion of "hyper activity" is becoming very approximate. The average of 14 storms is outdated for me. We in the past didn’t recorded every and any subtropical storms that lasted 2h in the middle of the Atlantic or counted as a tropical storm a barely 38mph system that intensified 1 hour before making landfall. So why using an average calculated since the 50s ?

For the Atlantic: 2017 - Costliest season on record, with one of the highest fatality rates in history for the Atlantic. 2018 - One of the worst hurricanes for Florida and one of very few Category 5 landfalls (Michael) and one of the worst for the Carolinas (Florence). 2019 - One of very few seasons with two Category 5s and featured a hurricane which is tied as the second strongest in the Atlantic, strongest in the open Atlantic, and the worst for the Bahamas (Dorian). 2020 - Highest number of named storms and tied for highest number of major hurricanes. 2021 - 3rd highest number of named storms. Featured one of the costliest and worst hurricanes for the US (Ida). 2022 - Fortunately average, but unfortunately one of the costliest and worst hurricanes for the US (Ian) and Canada (Fiona). 2023 - 4th highest number of named storms with 20 (despite an El Nino, which typically shoes half the number of storms that actually happens) and unprecedented two storms in the MDR in June. And that's just the Atlantic. Years like 2018, 2019 and 2023 were very bad years for other basins like the West and East Pacific and the North Indian too. Let alone the Southern Hemisphere. And the average number of storms for the Atlantic for the 1981-2010 period is 12 and for the 1991-2020 period is 14. Sure seems like we got more storms recently.

@@antiksur8883 Yeah its all looking very favourable for a very dangerous and busy season. Better raise homeowner insurance by 850% and car insurance by 500% in Florida.

I am not! I am in North Carolina. Maybe North Carolinians don't chat as much as Floridians. 😁

This is nothing new. There's just more people in the way now because people want to live in Florida. My family has lived here since the late 1890's and we all made it. I'm 66. The storms aren't any different. The only thing that has changed is that there's more people in the way in Florida that came down here to live in paradise.

We were extemely lucky with Dorian in 2019. We *dodged a missile* with that monster. Image if that thing had hit us with 185 mph sustained winds with 220 mph gusts in the Miami area.
