Soon we are not able to eat anything! My mom passed away at 98 two years ago she used to eat everything! Potatoes, corn,beans,rice (we are from Peru) and never had a surgery, osteoporosis, thyroid issues, gut problems etc.etc. she was healthy . I am gluten free, dairy free, grain free and I have hypothyroidism, osteoporosis and a lesion in my liver. I eat super healthy everything organic, grass fed and grass finished meats, pasture raised chicken, wild salmon, shrimp etc etc ( I order all the meats ) I am 105 pounds and exercise every day , with all of that I have all those problems! I think I will start to follow my mom steps eat everything and live a long healthy life 😅😅

Hi Laly, I completely understand but just like I tell my in laws who want to feed my kids garbage all day and use their childhood as the reason why it's okay we have to understand that food that your mom ate 90 years ago is not the same food that is available today, especially in the US! We have an adulterated toxic food system and should be avoiding anything that irritates our immune system but also working on our immune system. Now more than ever we are called to action to prevent our demise and decay and protect ourselves from our food system!

When our patients dive this deep into restriction I always recommend our coaches watch their nutrients, calories and protein intake. It is possible to still lose bone with this type of restriction. Dr. Steven Gundry says on that lectins can't be cooked out or Changed in food. This whole topic is so confusing to me that I just want to give up LOL, because one of the main things I survived on is peanut butter and toast. So I'm getting a good dose of lectins and phytates every time I eat it but that's the only thing I can eat for breakfast and one of the few things I can depend on for protein other than meat. Then I hear they eating a high meat content is bad because it produces too much acid in your system! And the vegetables oh my goodness they have lectins AND and all kinds of things that could really really harm you. It seems almost impossible!
@Dr_DougLucas
@Dr_DougLucas 11 месяцев назад
@@Savannah-ed4rv This is a confusing topic. Let me help you by clearing up one major misconception. Meat is good for your system, bones and muscles. It is "acid forming" but that is not relevant. Search Dr Doug Lucas PH Balance for more on this topic! Additionally, you can avoid the lectins in peanuts by switching to pecan butter. Both though are a better source of dietary fat than protein. Lectins can be reduced or eliminated with proper preparation. Gundry discusses this in his books but minimizes it's discussion.

I eat a lot of stir fry veggies ... usually with tofu or garbanzo beans. I also usually roast veggies. Hopefully my diet isn't working against my efforts to stay healthy. Yes. I stopped eating those acid oxylate foods for the most part. Dont eat spinach like I used too. I read eating vit c with those foods blocks the phytates. Have you read that? I have days where I treat myself to nuts etc and eat a vitc tablet with it at times but phytates are good for you too in moderation. Its a balance thing.
@Dr_DougLucas
@Dr_DougLucas Год назад
Vitamin C can change the bioavailability of things like iron and render them more absorbable in the presence of phytates but does not directly impact the phytates that I am aware of. I dislike the concept of moderation as it is often used as an excuse to consume whatever toxic thing we want. For many things there is no balance to be had. We shouldn't back down from absolutes when they are absolutely beneficial. Do we need to be absolute about nuts? Probably not. There is nutritional value as long as one doesn't over eat them and tolerates them.
@LesleyMowat
@LesleyMowat Год назад
Ya its how you define moderation balance and self control. I am extremely disciplined with diet and just about everything else. So for me it is a treat once once every two weeks. That includes pasta. That is balance and moderation for me. Most humans do struggle with this concept you are right. In north america in particular. You can also do everything perfectly and still not have the outcome you want but its better than not finding the drive to be your best most healthy self! We can try and control everything but we are not in control of everything. My friends say if Lesley cant do it, it cant be done! Humans have a very hard time with discipline I agree totally!

Starchy veggies and fruit will generally knock someone out of ketosis but having the metabolic machinery to both provides a lot of flexibility!

If you missed it, be sure to check out the previous video: Oxalates in Spinach and Kidney Stones: Should We Be Concerned? To be clear, I encourage everyone to eat huge amounts of dark green leafies every day - the healthiest food on the planet - but if you follow this advice (and you should!), then just choose any of the other wonderful greens. If you eat regular boring amounts of greens (like a serving a day), then it doesn’t matter which you choose. I continue to eat spinach, beet greens, and chard all the time. It’s just that you can overdo those three, so when I’m trying to hit my pound-a-day green leafy quota, I personally do mostly kale, collards, and arugula, which also happen to have the added benefit of being cruciferocious! I was told the odds of this happening are 1 in a thousand or more, which sounds good unless you are that one person. I took Fosamax for a brief time 3-6 months and took myself off of the medication because of swallowing issues. That was 20 years ago and I still have swallowing issues. My mother was given estrogen for her bones. She developed cancer that eventually spread to her liver. She died. I have told my doctors about my fears but they give NO healthy natural way to heal and prevent. They don’t listen. I’m now on Garden of Life system. This is very interesting. Plants have a defence mechanism to deter us from eating them. We obviously can obtain them easily so their defence seems to lie in the fact that they can do us some harm when we eat them. Animals in the wild as they once were also had a defence mechanism. To attack us back if we try to kill them. But once killed they were no threat to us.This actually explains to me how so many people who have had chronic health conditions absolutely rave about the carnivore diet. Most MD/DO providers will not know what to do with the information. ND and DC may if they are trained well but it's hard to know! Ultimately, you want an expert in the field. We use highly trained nutrition experts in our practice and both myself and all providers have traditional as well as functional medicine training. I get asked often who to trust and the truth is transparency in providers is very poor. Good training doesn't always make for good providers. Many of the best experts I know have learned on the job from others and made their own way. Ultimately, you have to find someone that's treatment aligns with your goals and beliefs. Not easy.....

As far as I recall from looking into this the oxalates only bind the calcium within the plant itself, so one simply can't count on calcium from those foods. It's not a situation where the oxalates in one food grabs and bind calcium from other foods or from your body. It has been a while since I looked into it, but I believe they are not really that much of an issue for calcium in the body. Food sensativities can happen on an individual basis though, to anything.

I had this conversation with a new patient yesterday. She has 0 risk factors for heart disease but as terrible osteoporosis and in her mid 50's. What is likely to cause your harm? A fall/fracture. She was eating a vegan diet and watched her t-scores fall rapidly. She was eating a very protein poor diet with lots of processed foods trying to be vegan. This was a bigger negative than the reduction in her cholesterol. For some maybe that's the right move but if bone health is your goal I don't see it.

There are more videos on You Tube about osteoporosis. I am now 75. Bone density test should be done after menopause. The primary care physician should discuss bone loss, osteoporosis, etc. I did my own research. Vitamin K2, magnesium are important. Like saving for retirement, the health issues like diabetes, osteoporosis, cardiovascular should be discussed as early as 30 yrs old. Companies should sponsor seminars on health issues. The money saved for retirement(401K) will be wasted to pay for medical expenses. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis when I was 65. Fosamax was the pill. It destroyed my jaw bone and had 4 expensive teeth implants. I stopped that Fosamax and did my own research. I drink fresh juices. Interesting that beets is one of them. General practitioners only know a little about each diseases. They are not specialists. We have to take our own initiative to learn things like what food is good for the gut, liver, kidney, brain, eyes, heart, etc. Thanks for the videos. They are good reminders.

Thank you Dr Lucas for this video. I find your videos very informative and helpful. However I think this video is a bit misleading regards Lectins and Phytates. If beans are soaked 24 hours, drained, rinsed and cooked on high; if wholegrain rice is cooked and if wholegrain bread is baked - then Lectins and Phytates are inactivated. Surely people do not eat dried beans or dried rice so there should not be a concern. The outer layers of whole grains contain vitamins, minerals, fiber and essential fatty acids. Beans are a superfood providing protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals. Both have many health benefits for our hearts and guts. I am so confused. 58, diagnosed 3 weeks ago. Bone density test results: -4 to -4.9 in lumbar spine. Ave -3.9 in hips. You’ve just listed everything I eat. Stopped eating red meat & dairy a few years back - except for Greek yoghurt- as THOSE are supposedly bad (plus don’t like red meat). Have had IBS since I was young. Have osteoarthritis too & markers indicating autoimmune disease🤷🏻‍♀️etc. What CAN I eat?? I’m already too thin😢

Hi there. It can be challenging. Our dietitians work closely with our patients to figure out the best solution to meet our criteria and patient preference. Dairy is variable but an animal based protein forward diet is usually our starting point.
@anaabendroth3460

You need proteins in the form of meat, fish, eggs. Sweet potatoes are tolerated as are white potatoes only if they are boiled and drained. The only veggies I eat are broccoli and string beans. My breakfast is oatmeal with boiled eggs. Red meat is important. I guess you'd call it a quasi-kerosene diet.

Crazy cause I have colon issues as well as osteoporosis. I need whole grains for fiber. I have been eating allot of salmon, tuna and sardines as well as chicken. But my osteoporosis is aggravating my lower back. I was told my muscle mass is bad and need to increase protein.
@Dr_DougLucas
@Dr_DougLucas Год назад
Hi Cheryl, The fiber question is a challenging one with proponents on either side. I am not convinced that either side is correct all the time. If indeed you do need fiber for your gut function I would recommend you look for non grain sources. An RD or nutritionist can help you create a plan that gets you all the fiber you need with out grains. We instruct patients to improve muscle mass very day! Eating adequate protein is a great starting point.

We are eating the same fruits and veggies all year round, earlier in our grandma era these were seasonal. So u eat different every 2/3 months, now some are even flown from another corner of the world So now all these Raw Vegans HV become Unhealthy? They felt so superior & kept ranting about how raw veganism makes them look so young & looked down their nose on meat eaters. Where r they now?
@Dr_DougLucas
@Dr_DougLucas Год назад
Hello, It's easy to criticize those that attempt to make us feel bad for choices we make around meat. What I try to remember is that most people who choose to eat a vegan lifestyle are doing so for the belief that they are doing good for themselves and the planet. It seems virtuous and is intoxicating to find that moral high ground in today's society. I welcome my plant eating friends with high aspirations and provide objective data to show where their diet could be improved. Most start eating meat again but not all and that's their choice. My goal is to improve HealthSpan and support anyone's beliefs while doing so. My approach is to lead with love and generally I will get love in return.

I wonder if the announcement to "like, subscribe, hit the notification bell," really encourages people to do so? We all know the drill. In all honesty, whenever I hear this announcement, something in me deflates and resists. I can honestly say that I have never subscribed or liked a channel because the creator invited me to do it. The announcement distracts from the content. If people like something they will genuinely respond without having to be told to do so. And as for notification bells, I don't want a notification every time one of the 200 channels I subscribe to uploads a video. All this to say that your content is great. Let it speak for itself.

Don't eat any plants because of the "omega 3". The omega 3 in plants is almost useless and it's not the DHA/EPA that has all the positive effects in studies and humans cannot covert it in meaningful quantities. The proper omega 3 are only found in animal based food. Best sources are cold water fish.

Our ancestors grew their fruits and vegetables in rich soil, no pesticides, and used natural seeds. Now our supermarket food come from massive farms grown in greatly depleted soil, use pesticides/chemicals transported from great distances. Our livestock is feed grains to fatten them unnatural to their system. Dr. Lucas do you think that the pressure from these conglomerate companies and campaign donations has caused the US government to not tell us the truth or want to help the farmers grow healthy produce and drug free animals? Without a healthy population we are spending much more taxpayer dollars on healthcare. Have you read any of Dr. Steven R. Gundry's books on nutrition and his recipes?
@Dr_DougLucas
@Dr_DougLucas Год назад
Hi Mary, I love your scrutiny of the system. I don't know how much of the dysfunction is driven by greed, ignorance or conspiracy. I agree that the food system is adulterated across the board from mono crop culture to toxic agriculture. For those of us that can work with a local farm for animal products and grow our own plants we should. It's probably the only way to control to any extent the quality of your food. I have read Dr. Gundry's work. I like his perspectives on lectins but I don't think they can be applied as globally as he suggests. I also disagree with his perspective on IGF-1 as a concerning biomarker. He uses this principle to limit meat consumption which will likely result in protein deficiency in most people which is far worse than a briefly elevated IGF-1. Other factors that raise IGF-1 include high calorie diets and frequent eating which are far bigger issues than eating meat in a responsible way!

@Dr_DougLucas
@Dr_DougLucas Год назад
Sarah, Well, a carnivore diet does serve some people well but that's not my point here. I am an advocate for fruit and plants when the are tolerated. My point is that many commonly consumed foods are not as healthy as we are led to believe and for some can do considerable damage. Eating a diet of grains, beans and kale can destroy some people's gut but can be well tolerated by others. My goal is to help people find what works best for them. For me, it's animal based protein, eggs, fruit, non starchy veggies (not kale) and occasionally starchy veggies. I don't need anything else and can't make a rational case for including other foods except for those that need more fiber.
