The cap trick has been extremely helpful. I have a passable voice but I've been physically forcing my larynx up which has caused a lot of straining. This exercise has helped me re-discover my resonance without any straining. Thank you so, so much :)
@TransVoiceLessons
@TransVoiceLessons 3 года назад
This is sooo wonderful to read! I work with a lot of individuals who have normalized a voice that functionally works for them but still has traces of strain built into it. I know I had a lot of strain for 2 years before I used the external noise approach and got rid of my strained resonance behavior. I'm so glad you had that experience and this video was able to guide you to it.
@Kaisebon
@Kaisebon 3 года назад
I was playing around with modifying resonance with an external sound when my dog walked in with the biggest face of concern, trying to figure out how the heck I was making that strange sound. I pulled my phone away from my face to let him sniff it, and he seemed content after that.

I don’t get a lot of feedback on those and I think it’s because I wear a denture. Question: when you do the phone thing you appear to be changing the shape of you oral cavity whereas I try to focus just on the larynx. Is this incorrect? Can’t wait for my turn for lessons! I record myself talking or saying certain words and i can almost hear my mom talking to me every now and again but it's very hard judge my own voice "I'm a total noobie and this is my first few days of trying this" I for sure don't sound like me anymore, but im unsure of how feminine my voice is, i showed a friend and he said it sounded like a friend he had at college. But i'm worried that he's just trying to sound supportive. I know i have a long way to go, but this is honestly terrifying to practice in my home.

These tips are super useful, especially the Noise trick. I just found out that my voice has no resonance change whatsoever until I tried this trick. My first time is a bit of a strain, but a few more days of practice helps the strain ease. The best part is I can practice this without fear of being caught. In all of the methods the only way I was able to change the sound was by opening my mouth more or less, and with tapping my neck I wasn't able to change it at all. Could you explain how to just move resonance around? I don't think I fully understand

My issue is resonance. I have my perfect pitch picked out and I’ve used it with other people. But I can’t keep my voice for too long🙄
@cooltv2776
@cooltv2776 3 года назад
an issue I found with the bottle cap method: widening the opening of your lips also changes the sound. you do it in the video. how you are holding it can also have an effect. it still seems useful if you know to be careful about that issue, but without that knowledge im worried that its actively detrimental to peoples progress and the tapping sound goes up, but their voice doesnt change in resonance
@TheAscendant1
@TheAscendant1 2 года назад
Widening the lips (i.e. - as in a smile) is intentional. It's one part (R3) of why women tend to speak with more bright voices, they've been socialized to smile more. So she's intentionally changing the shape of the lips here as part of the exercise, not on accident.
@AvonaStar
@AvonaStar 3 года назад
Z, I was wondering if you could perhaps make a video (or include in another video) something about some issues that I've been having. I generally practice my voice as I walk to the bus stop and that's been progressing nicely (if slowly), and I've noticed that my voice does pretty well as a cashier; however, I've noticed when I get home or on days off when I'm chilling all day at home, my voice seems to shit itself. Like if I talk to my mom, the pitch might be lower or the timbre may be rough and not-so-feminine. I'm trying to figure out what's happening and I've tried drinking more water but so far I've had little to no success. I would say that my average pitch at work might be 190-200 Hz while my average at home is probably somewhere around 170 Hz. I've considered whether it's because I'm more relaxed and perhaps not vocalizing as strongly at home (as walking on the street, I have to compete with passing cars) but at work, I don't vocalize as much either, though perhaps a bit more. It could possibly some awkwardness with my voice around my mom but I've been out for 20+ years, so I don't know about that. Anyhow, if you have any ideas, that would be cool.
@meggytah
@meggytah Год назад
The first method is actually probably pretty familiar to a bunch of people. There are a lot of those videos out there "put your phone to your mouth and sing" kind of things where the video is just notes and the goal is sort of like a talk box effect. A lot of people may recognize Harder Better Faster Stronger by Daft Punk (or the one Kanye West did). Personally, I love that because of that familiarity since I've played around with that concept for years, way before I was out or even had the slightest suspicion

venting here cuz i figure yall in the community likely know the feeling and may have ideas. i'm no expert as my vocal knowledge is something of a hodgepodge after years of related interests, so take my conclusions with a grain of salt. these have helped me make a lot of progress, but it still feels like i'm hitting a hard block. i can mimic the sound effects by adjusting my throat muscles with the noise and a pitch-producing app (usually use 197 hz) with a fair degree of success. with the exercises i'm then able to reproduce the adjustments without the noise/app and work on speaking. when i convert it to speech though it feels way too bright and forward, almost exaggerated. i've a baritone voice with a nasally midwestern accent (using a pitch monitor app i seem to stick from around E2/F2 to E3/F3 when keeping it at what seems like baseline; G2/A2 are about the middle of the road for me). With the accent my voice always feels fairly thin/bright but somehow heavy (not a great combo; it's always seemed to cut through a room obnoxiously). anybody have any ideas on what to do?
