Why marek's disease in chickens is so dangerous! I try hard to keep my chickens healthy, happy and stress free. Feeding them everything they need to stay healthy is a huge, huge part of preventing diseases. As with any living thing on the planet, prevention is way better than treating the disease, but from time to time it happens so here are the three most common diseases.

I had a hen with mareks before she survived the first time. I had to teach her how to walk again but a few months ago she got it again and sadly past away. She was the nicest hen I ever seen and still is to this day.

Thank you Becky for getting back to me on adding new chickens to my flock. Update on the sick chicken, she is doing great now! Thank God! I know within the 2nd day what I had done and regretted it... However, I correct it. separated her from the rest and continued feeding her oregano and apple-cider vinegar in the water. Today she is well.. and beautiful.... Thank you!

Thanks for the great video. I am going through the nightmare of Marek's right now. I adopted a trio from a neighbor and unknowingly have infected my flock. It couldn't come at a worse time of the year either because cleaning feels almost impossible in 20*F or below weather. Everything is just frozen here. I have never felt such defeat with my animals because the disease is so brutal & quick to kill. I have learned some hard lessons for sure.

Spraying vinegar water will NOT kill Merriks. We lost our best momma chicken to it. I held her in my arms as she passed after the vet gave her the shot to be put down. Its not funny. Its Highly contagious. Not everyone will get sick and pass but if one has it they All have it. Consult a Vet ASAP if your bird gets a limp wing or they lose function in their legs one at a time.

I live in Southern California and our chickens are being "plagued" with Virtulant Newcastle Disease. The state is having to cull entire flocks if one chicken in the flock tests positive for it. There is a protocol for how to decontaminate to prevent the spreading, warnings against moving chickens, etc. but people often don't know or don't follow and it's spreading city by city, county by county. We are surrounded by outbreaks and a case was found in a nearby city. Everyone is holding their breath in my area as it hasn't yet reached us. If you love your chickens and they are a part of your pet family, this is very heartbreaking.

Becky, I bought a flock of peeps from a tractor supply store in Bowling Green Ohio. Some of the birds were infected with Marek's disease. I've isolated two chickens that have paralyzed legs but used my own supplements to nurse them back from death but the paralysis is still there and both chickens are eating well but I know they have no quality of life and I must destroy them, Sadly. It's hard coming to terms with killing them now as they seem to enjoy each other's company and are both eating together. ❤ today I found a batam, part silky with a large hard lump mass on its left upper thigh, it seems there's no end to this as all of my 40+ chickens were raised together. 😢

I have a chicken that appears to have had mareks disease - one leg not working, then other one not perfect, couldn't stand or move around much - but she didn't go off feed and I kept on own in a cage for 3 weeks with clean water and chick crumbles (with antibiotic). she is now back walking. The toes on the first leg that went still don't spread quite properly. No sign of improvement for first 2 weeks. Ihave had others that die from similar...but usually find them too late. Do you think this would be mareks disease? or could it be something else?

@anonz975

Marek's is a herpes virus that is shed through dander, if one bird has it most likely ALL of them have a latent form already (and may have had it for years). Most flocks in my area have it (Middle GA). Healthy birds can live a lifetime and never show signs but STRESSED birds, especially young adolescents being picked on during integration can succumb. Like herpes in humans it is triggered by stress, but in the case of chickens an outbreak is usually fatal for the bird that was affected. I lost some young birds to Marek's a few years ago, now I only add birds when one of my adult hens goes broody and will raise tiny chicks with the flock (which prevents stress from integration). Since I have done that I have not lost a bird to Marek's for 3+ years. Though I did get some herpes meds from my vet (Valtrex made for humans) and if a bird is injured or otherwise sick I give them that to prevent the already stressed bird from getting an active form of Marek's (it has not been tested on chickens but seems to work fine here). As stated my flock has had it for years, some of my birds are 7 or 8 years old and perfectly healthy
@BeckysHomestead
@BeckysHomestead 5 лет назад
The problem with that is your "healthy" looking birds spread the virus their whole lives. It is much better to cull them and raise virus free birds☀️❤️☀️
@anonz975
@anonz975 5 лет назад
The virus is spread by wild birds OR by people that visit feed stores and other places and pick up infected dander. Culling birds at the first hint of illness is very reason chickens die from common "mild" ailments like Marek's when wild birds do NOT. I will not cull my flock, there are breeders that produce very resistant birds simply because they are smart enough NOT to cull and they raise healthier chickens as a result. Their lives are worth more than the $2 for a new chick.
@cj597
@cj597 5 лет назад
Becky's Homestead Totally agree with you Becky! Poultry diseases are at their worst at the moment in England. Culling is the way to go. All birds should be vaccinated to LQ at hatch. Otherwise, you are spreading your chickens’ disease, people visiting are picking up your birds’ diseases through dander and poo. People need to practice stricter and harsher biosecurity, there should also be more education available on this. I live in a high risk area, all my birds are vaxxed to LQ but I still practice very high quality biosecurity. What many don’t realise when their birds are ill is that they are suffering. It’s not just something they pick up and keep in their pocket. It affects them physically. You are also endangering other’s birds’ health. Again, I 100% agree and it’s great to see you talking about this!
@cj597
@cj597 5 лет назад
Anon Z Wild birds DO die from the diseases which have been bred in domestic poultry. Continuing to breed ill poultry and sell these birds to people is very irresponsible and a very serious issue. Here in the UK you could be fined and even prosecuted as diseases like Mareks are notifiable, meaning if you see or know of ill birds, you are obliged to contact DEFRA. I’d assume purposely breeding and distributing ill birds would have harsher consequences.

Ok Becky, I have a couple questions I didn't hear answered in this video. First of all say I have laying Hens and feeder chickens total chicken 50. I keep feeders separate from laying Hens but say I find one chicken with either type of pocks virus. After removing that one chicken should I 100% check all other chickens? Or maybe just to be on the safe side go ahead a start watering all the chickens with the Apple Cider Vinegar mix or is there an issue with the vinegar? I didn't hear you say if you find one after removing it what about the rest to me it doesn't sound safe to waste time and slowly keep an eye on the other birds I would think you would want to react right away in some manner. Then as far as treating the Hen house for 6 weeks with the 50/50 mix wouldn't that create a bad insect problem possibly even termites because Apple Cider vinegar attracts insects big time

Hi Becky great video. I would love to get a 2 chickens and will probably build your chicken tractor. But I don't have much space to let them out as well as I have two out door cats that kill pigeons and birds and I also have two gun dogs and there's some foxs in our area too. What do you suggest I should do to keep the chickens safe if I get some and in minimum space? Thank you.

With all that going on, you will have to build a sturdy wooden hen house and a strong fully enclosed run. Keep in mind, Chickens stress easy and when hens are stressed they don't lay well. Pick a quite shady (dark shade for the hen house) spot in your yard and give it a try. Go to my website Beckyshomestead.com then click Chickens. I have made lots of videos to help you get it right☀️❤️☀️

Home & Garden Hobbies for Home Edders if your only getting 2 chickens there are a lot of sturdy coops at tractor supply or other places that carry chicken coops they are pretty small but they have enough room for 2 chickens to be happy and healthy

I underestimated chicken viruses in 2018 and i lost a flock of 150 chickens( clone virus) . Now in 2020 i started again with 230 chickens and this time no joking with viruses.

@Blue Skies i vaccinated them this year for flu and clone and i have no issues till now and they are growing. Clone is a virus that hits the respiratory organs of the chicken and the results can be drastic to a flock. It's so hard to cure so you have to get your flock vaccinated.

I haven't watched a video here in quite some time but DANG Becky! You've lost so much weight and you are looking great girl! Curious about something. Do you only use natural treatments or do you ever have to resort to antibiotics? I'm trying to be as natural as I can but I worry so much about respiratory illnesses like Newcastle disease, and fowl pox. I bought fowl pox vaccine and Newcastle vaccine for my girls but now I'm wondering if I should hold off on the fowl pox one? My girls are about 7 month old layers so are they too old to give that vaccine? Again, you look great with all of your weight loss lady! I would love to know your secret. ;) :)

Becky HELP! I think my chicken is anemic. She has a very pale comb and runny watery stool. She is eating and drinking but not as active as the rest. What can I do for her?

BECKY,,That was a super great video!!! I have a question for you and I hope you can answer it......What is it with apple cider vinegar? It's used for worms and different viruses flu 's. And white vinegar for cleaning coops and it kills all kinds of different bugs. But what is in the apple cider vinegar that works so well? I don't get it. And why is it only the organic kind that works on all this stuff??? Thank you ..Linda in Florida 🌴🌴

Organic apple cider vinger has mother...it is not sterilized. Therefore all the micro good stuff is there that does kill the illness is available.
