The Pansonic Leica 12-60 F2.8-4 lens surprised me with some of its features that are great for video shooters!!
The lens is Parfocal, has limited Focus Breathing and the barrel design is dampened to offer great resistance that makes using the focus by wire system easier for pulling focus.

I bought one of these last week for my G9, I absolutely love it, the detail it resolves along with the character in the colour and contrast are amazing.

This lens is a sleeping beauty, too little known for the excellent lens it is. Using it conveys the feel of quality, perfectly size and weight for the G9 or GH5. The Lumix 35-100mm f2.8 is similar in feel and quality.

Agreed wholeheartedly! I loved my 12-35 ii as well.. they are built differently in style but are both excellent! This PL 12-60 just has something really beautiful about its images 📷

Somebody has tested it on an Olympus camera and found (as expected) that this lens is not optically parfocal. It acts this way only on Panasonic cameras (or at least, on some of them). Since this is not a professional piece of gear, the functional behavior is all that matters.

Very interesting video! I am mainly a still photographer, but I do video as well, so I had to look more closely at my Olympus 12-40 2.8 Pro. It seems to be parfocal as well and I don't see any focus breathing either. And of course Olympus has that focus clutch so the manual focusing is really smooth. I have never had the Pan/Leica 12-60 so I have no idea how they compare, but regardless your video has given me a new found appreciation for one of my own lenses ;-). Thanks!

hmm, didn't really think about these three points because its *literally* my first lens. All these three points are absolutely necessary for me, but didn't notice them.. Really glad i got it as a kit lens!

I have it and it would be the perfect lens if It had a constant minimum aperture, not sure if they could build it though

Yeah! I'll talk about this in an upcoming video and it's basically the one thing I'd change with the lens.. a constant aperture throughout the focal range. 📷

I don't even do that much video, but focus breathing drives me mad, this as I like image compositing and want to match frames, even with different focus points. 😅 I know Photoshop auto aligns, still nice to have it correct out of camera. Will definitely check this out.

How would you say it compares to having the 12-35 and 35-100 f2.8 combo at your disposal? I am waiting for the 35-100 to arrive any day now. Just curious. I did own the lesser 12-60 kit and gave it to my son. Found I need a bit more range in certain situations.

If you want the fastest (or already own one or the other) go with the 12-35 & 35-100 set they are brilliant! If you want just one lens to cover most of what those other two do then the PL 12-60 is the one to get! I chose the PL 12-60 so I could get the PL 8-18 as my duo set! It just boils down to what you want and need. My "holy trinity" of zooms for my G9 is the 8-18, 12-60 and the 100-400 PL lenses! They are what I need instead of the more traditional 24-70, 70-200 F2.8 Equiv set 😎 No bad choices with any of them Scott all top quality glass

I liked this lens, I sold it though, to buy the 10-25mm lens :) Now that lens never comes of my G9 (unless shooting wildlife or things a bit far away)

The 10-25 is something special and I reckon I'll own it with the release of the next gen of GH cameras. Seems like a match made in heaven!!

@@CreativeConnor yes definitely, it the only lens in existence that would cover everything I need. Especially as a travel filmmaker/photographer I don't want to change lenses all the time because I have limited time at a spot. (Especially with gimbals it can be time consuming). The only con I have with this lens is that it's focus by wire (waiting for Panasonic to get that canon/sony like autofocus though).

Is there a way to adjust the focus ring (inside the Panasonic G9), so you don't need to turn it full way around to focus from far away to close? I need to make smaller adjustments, because of an external focus motor from my gimbal

I didnt have a clue that the lens offered this feature I have the 12-60 kit lens on my g80 but it's the f3.5-5.6 however I might try this 2.8 lens. Still in two minds about the a7iii 🤔. This camera malarky is so stressful lol. As a video knowledgeable video guy what tips could you give me to improve my vids using the panasonic? I've got the time to learn this now my DIY tasks are complete lol. Thanks for sharing its greatly appreciated. Steve

Howiyah! I don't think the A7iii is the best video-focused camera on the market. The sensor is brilliant, as is the AF... but the body, menus and viewfinder haven't aged as well. It's still good but not great anymore. And yes camera stuff is seriously stressful.. best advice is to limit how much you look at all this stuff online and just shoot with what you have! If you want to get better with the camera you have now set little tasks that you want to film, make them small videos about 1 minute long and try sequence them. Example a video of you making a coffee (done to death on YT) but you'll learn loads doing it.. try to make it cohesive start to finish. Then maybe something else, and keep these little sequences short with a visual narrative and get more adept at executing them. This sort of stuff is like getting muscles in the gym.. it takes repetitions. 😎📷

@@CreativeConnor that's fantastic thank you, yeah ill try and practice with settings and techniques then hopefully move onto lots and work out how they work lol. Yeah see I do a mix of both video and photo and I love the panasonic just at times when I want some lowlight shots like astro with my tent lit up it struggles or landscape photography. Tbh that's what has put me off I'm not prepared to sacrifice the viewfinder, flip put screen, weather sealing and ease of use for the superior image quality. I wonder if the G9 is much better than the g80? Anyways thanks for the advice, you stay safe pal and keep these awesome helpful vids coming 👍

It's selling features of some of the nice cinema glass! Means DOPs and focus pullers can nail their work every single time 😄 not often seen in photography first glass 😬
