Knee on belly is a position of tactical advantage that allows you to commit to a submission, advance your position, or get up and go! Eli Knight, Jiu Jitsu Black Belt and Professor under the Gracie System is very thorough and not only offers the HOW TO, but also WHY TO.

If anyone tries the heel hook (third option) with a partner go VERY easy. Like 10% get the lock then SLOWLY apply pressure till he taps. heel hooks are hella dangerous and not even IBJJF legal, go easy to avoid injury.

You already have the arm after the hip throw. Beyond that, excellent video.

love this vid, however I would suggest controlling both arms for the armbar and pulling on his head with your top leg. Awesome leg lock transition as well. Thanks for the ideas.

when you go for juju gatame you need to secure the arm higher towards the wrist so you don't lose the armbar in transition. securing it at the elbow allows the arm to twist

Remember there will not be too many who could withstand getting thrown onto concrete. Also, you're aiming to land him on his head into the ground when throwing the person in self-defense. Nice set of follow-up moves. I would prefer to palm strike the person instead of a punch on the ground. If you miss or slide off the sweaty skull. Then you will not break your hand but you could if you miss the punch. Nice video and situational awareness.

IMO for #1 & #2, to counter do a hip thrust to throw him off balance. #3 looks like you can use the left knee to his face &/or the left foot to kick his face to counter.

could you show some other moves than hip throw to get to knee om belly position from clinch?

Im not a martial arts instructor though have trained a little bit throughout my life. To me it doesnt make any sense to place myself on the ground, which is a very prone position, in a street fight. To me it doesnt make any sense to tangle and engage in hand to hand combat any longer than i have to. Once my attacker has been taken down, im escaping if i have the means. Possibly one final strike to his legs to kill his mobility so he can not chase.

I like the techniques especially that kimura but the heel hook was a little too much for me - waaay too fancy :P Even thou you mention you can strike I actually believe that number one fight ender from this position (and most dominant ground positions) is simply to ground and pound the attacker especially on hard surface. Cheers from Poland!

Everything until 2:38 makes sense. I don't mean to sound like a hater, I really appreciate your content and respect your BJJ expertise and background, but my main concerns are: As you said in the beginning, you want knee on belly in order to maintain a visual of what is happening around you (in case a buddy of his appears) and not be too committed. I completely agree with these statements. Mobility = survivability in a street fight context. The thing is: you end up breaking these two principles with the last two finishes. I personally would not to arm-bars or knee bars, heel hooks, or ankle locks in a street fight. In fact I wouldn't finish someone by going to my back. Why? because it greatly limits my mobility and therefore my survivability. As soon as you are arm locking him, your face is in a perfect position for a suddenly appearing friend of his to stomp your face against the concrete repeatedly or even for your own assailant to pull out a knife you didn't know he had and stab your leg or ass and proceed to kill you. If you don't know for sure if your assailant has a blade or knife with him, it's always a safer bet to assume he does and therefore fight always as if he could potentially have one. The cost of making false assumptions could be paid with your life. Now I'm not a BJJ blackbelt, I've done BJJ for around 2.5 years total. I love it and my grappling skills have increased a lot in this time period, but I would certainly not apply many of the finishes and moves in a street fight. This is just my opinion and I hope it serves as constructive criticism, maybe you guys can play around taking these considerations into account. I hope it helps build realism. Like I said, I'm not pretending to be a better grappler than Mr. Knight, but I have a few concerns as to these moves, I appreciate the content. It is very unique and I love that you guys are addressing a very real context that is out there and most people with actual skills ignore (good wrestlers, BJJ black belts, MMA guys, etc.) and a lot of quacks pretend to address.

The first kimura attack seems that it would be higher percentage for us slower less mobile types.

This is great if you're in competition. This is awful if you're looking for actual self defense. It's like telling an officer to shoot in for the legs, like the criminal isn't going to knee you in the head or drop a hammer on your back. Also, in critiquing his style, the arm bar needs absolute commitment. If you let go of the pant leg, and your left foot doesn't move over the torso to control it, your opponent will roll right out.
@Renaldo135

Your groin is exposed. Use a knee on his body and your other shin to pin his arm or shoulder down that way you limit his arm use and can still get up and off quick.

I like how you throw him onto those metal mats. Good environmental awareness. .. or coincidence generation. Better lucky than good, right?
@kodain

Or straighten out his arm using your knee as a fulcrum, or you drop your knee into his ribcage after the throw, or you stomp the ribcage after the throw, or the head. Seriously, you're standing up and got control over one arm, he's one the ground. Why would you want to get closer?

Isn't it just simpler after the hip throw to leverage his right arm and be done with it ? This here just doesnt look feasible to me. The leg grab was to me a bit strange aswell because his head imo was way too exposed . Why did he bend his body down like that ? I get it it's a demo but still...
@sebacarballesevolutionacad8290
I don't wanna be a hater but the submissions are bad excecuted. If you talk about don't overcommitting to the ground then you should not go for the armbar or the heelhook. while you are on the ground you are exposed.
@FunkerTactical
@FunkerTactical 7 лет назад
Actually, Eli spoke of disengaging when appropriate to the situation as an option. Also, in what way were the submissions badly executed? --- Honestly, your comment sounds like that haterade I've been warned about within the BJJ community. -GN

Funker Tactical - Fight Training Videos GN @roughly 3:40 where he is doing the heel hook the way he has to sit then do a little butt scoot to get closer then swap position of the feet. They look sloppy and hard to completely smoothly(smooth is fast). and he repeated these in every iteration. I believe there is some real criticism to be leveled here and not hater-aide.
@sebacarballesevolutionacad8290
Funker Tactical - Fight Training Videos as i said. don't want to start a discussion about that. For example, in the kimura his elbows are wide separeted from his ribs opening the oportunity for an escape. In the armbar the knees also are wide open. And again. He can do the armbar and the heelhook from kneeling position. Bro, i love your videos and the concepts you brought, i just wanna do a constructive coment.

Seba BJJCarballes Funkers right. You say this has flawed execution but you aren't locked up with the man demonstrating. Further more he's demonstrating, so there isn't the same snap you have with a real life situation. Therefore little extra movements seem pointless but they become one motion. Further more as someone who's been fortunate enough to train with law enforcement agent and prisoner guards who drill very specific grappling techniques if you get slammed full force then slapped in any kind of hold you are finished. It isn't a BJJ match or MMA. You just break it from the get go and move on.
@MrKahunadog

Seriously why would I opt for option 2 or 3? Spinning armbar or Heel hook. Spinning armbar commits me to be entangled on my back on the ground, while heel hook keeps both his hands free with me on my back. Yes knee on top is effective, but those options work against the primary reasons to use knee on top. Dominance. Mobility. No I'm not hating. The issue I have is he is trying to use bjj as a solution to a problem vs looking at the problem then looking at what bjj offers. Similar to my issue with passing the knife over head. Why pass the knife? Jam or Trap it and kimura it till he drops the weapon or his arm comes off.

Instead of "placing" knee on belly, drop it with all your body weight onto the solar plexus. Fight over!! That's if it a serious life or death situation.

The reason I don't like any of those holds is because you're dedicating nearly all of your limbs to control only one of his. He can still reach for a weapon at any time; If he has so much as a pointy object, let alone a knife or gun you're fucked. The optimal solution seems to be simply throw then GTFO to a safer location or transition to a weapon yourself if need be rather than trying to apply fancy holds or attack him any further on the ground (which is often the MOST dangerous place to be IMO).

Thanks for the vid, but there are too many things that can go wrong with those positions. Even for very experienced grapplers, just too much to go wrong on the street.

It's good. But too much going on. Teaching people to remember 1001 different techniques and positions is setting people up for failure. Keep it simple with some strong stable core principles that can be adapted allows a person to learn it, commit it to memory, and convert it to instinctual reaction. Keep it simple. Fights never happen in a planned and paced manner. They're chaos. So better to react quickly, decisively, and effectively, then be able to disengage and get out of there.

MAYH3M0NE Good Krav Maga artist would kick your ass before you could say OK!!! so many wannabes in this world! Remember that in any fight within the first 10 seconds of enemy contact all plans go out the window! in today's society most attackers are not going to be alone and being on the ground is a bad idea! Go watch an antifa protest video. Allways multiple attackers! In the provided video there are many other better and faster ways to render attacker immobilized leaving you in position to face additional attackers. Just my two cents from 18-years of instructing and personal experience...

That last one was wrong, he wasnt locking the guys body in the proper way, so he could turn and scape the lock, this guy is from what academy? And it BRAZILIAN jiu-jitsu, not just jiu jitsu. Essa chave de calcanhar foi feita errada, esse cara é um faixa preta? É questionável.
