So nice to see a groomer who understands the importance of not cutting or shaving a Shelties coat. The info on trimming the feet and groin is most helpful 😊

I know this is an older video…..BUT……We have a one year old Sheltie and so far….we’ve only tried one groomer and she was not happy that he barked the entire time…..it was HIS first time grooming! So far, we haven’t found a groomer who will take him. Thank you for your instructions. It helps me to know what questions to ask!

Thank you for this! I'm in the process of getting a Sheltie and this is so helpful to know what to request/lookout for when I go to a groomer. Trying to get all my ducks in a row before I bring the pup home so this was very informative and much appreciated.

Absolutely right never ever shave or trim a Sheltie coat. Weekly line brushing while they blowing coat will do more to help heat regulation than anything. Have owned Shelties for 50 years and never had a coat trimmed/ shaved. Just keep the paws well trimmed, no grinch paws and maybe a sanitary shoot that’s it.

So happy I found you. I went to the pet store to buy a shave, they were closed early because of C19. He's been panting a lot so I thought I'd help him out with a short haircut ......well that would have been awful if I would have not found you...Thanks a million xxo

Oh that’s wonderful! The best thing to do is keep them clean, brushed and combed. Good luck and stay safe.

This is why shelties need a really good weekly brushing to get out all the loose undercoat. And why a briefer daily brushing is good. Helps them out in all things.

We never see other Shelties. We groom at home for the most part...with occasional assistance of a professional. We get mighty hot at agility class & just got cooling mats to try out for when we are out in the heat.

This was very helpful, thank you. I have a 11 year old Sheltie, he has been having problems with diareha, I ended up cutting some of the hair under his tail, after I tried cleaning him up back there. Of course, I made a mess out of the hair back there. Is there a way I shape it up to look better or just comb it and leave it alone ? Thank you. Sue Long from Franklin, Pa.

It is a medical issue and I was asked to shave mine by a vet. So I feel totally awful and I feel that these dogs are just bred faulty. It is heart breaking, because until I went to a groomer, my dog was fine. Then all hell seemed to break loose and the infections are so bad, there is just not other way. If they were designed with sensible coats, this would not happen
@savannahsmiles1797
@savannahsmiles1797 3 года назад
they ARE designed with proper coats, but they weren't designed, bred for hot areas. If you properly take care of a sheltie, it is a very healthy dog. Get on sheltie forums, they are the BEST source of info on ALL subjects.

What do you recommend for a sheltie (home pet-not a show dog) who loves to play outside all day and gets leaves, sticks, and all sorts of outdoor debris stuck in her coat. I thought a shorter cut around her legs and belly (and tail) would be the answer, but you seem to be saying not to do this. Thank you, Karen. (Sheltie owner)

Thank you for all the wonderful information! Do you know of any groomers in the Chicago area that has experience with Shelties? I'm afraid of taking mine to a groomer because I fear that they will shave my dog or give her an unnecessary hair cut.

Unfortunately we don't know of anyone in that area. We are from across the lake in Ontario, Canada. For the most part around here, when you take your double coated breed to a reputable groomer, we will not shave your dog unless it is incredibly matted or you have asked us to do so. Shaving a double coated breed is a big no-no in our parts of the world and I don't see it being any different in the U.S. But as long as you take her to a reputable groomer and make sure to specify what you want done, you shouldn't have any major issues.

Thanks for sharing this with us. Do you have any recommendations for keeping feces out of the shelties back quarter fur? I had been trimming the haunches back quite a bit, along with down at the base of the tail, but now I'm realizing that was most likely damaging her fur. What is the best way to keep the dog hygienically clean? My dog is prone to UTIs, so it's a pretty big concern for me.

Thanks for the great question. You can take her into your groomer and ask her for a "sanitary clean up". Which is trimming the hair back around the rectum, skimming back the hair down the back side (not shaving it) and shaving her vag area. We will have a video uploaded answering your questions shortly. Thanks again!

Wow, this is very informative. I had no idea you weren’t supposed to clip off the hair. I have 2 shelties and the groomer always does this. Since I am unable to take my dogs in due to current situation , can you recommend a good shampoo and clipper for an “at home” grooming? Thanks!
@tlcdoggrooming
@tlcdoggrooming 4 года назад
If you are going to try and do this yourself at home. You will want to purchase an actual professional set of clippers. Andis or Whal are two of my favourite companies. You would also want to consider purchasing a different blade for the job. The clippers come with a #10 blade. But that would take your dog very very short. Think about a #4f or a #7f. The higher the number on the blade, the shorter the hair. Shampoo.....any kind of shampoo should be fine. I personally tend to lean toward the Best Shot line of shampoo and conditioner products. Not necessary for you, but that is what I typically order for use in my salon. Good luck and don't worry. Some of the double coated dogs actually sustain zero coat damage from shaving. Maybe your dogs are in that rare category? Good luck!

@Twins822

I just watched your video and I wished I watched it earlier. I had my sheltie get a "Sanitary cut", which was a big mistake. The hair is growing back but it looks uneven and odd. Is there anything I can do to make it grow back correctly? A special diet? Thank you.
@tlcdoggrooming
@tlcdoggrooming 2 года назад
Unfortunately no, if the hair is damaged because it was shaved, there is not a whole lot you can do for it besides not cutting it ever again. Just maintain it with a slicker brush and metal comb. Also if it was a true sanitary cut, the hair in the groin does not matter, you want to keep that short for them so they can regulate their body temperatures. However, if the 'pants' were trimmed on the dog, that would be where you would get a damaged coat and perhaps just stay away from cutting it at all.

Any recommendations on what to use to get the undercoat out on an older "tender headed", for lack of better terms, baby
@tlcdoggrooming
@tlcdoggrooming 2 года назад
You can try an undercoat rake, these are optimal for digs with big double coats, how ever if that does not work or you cannot use it for one reason or another, you could just use a regular slicker brush followed up by a metal comb. The metal comb alone is a really great tool for undercoats.

Why does my groomer keep cutting the hair shorter like a border collie? My Bailey does not have any matts when she arrives. I just want the legs, feet, ears, sanitary areas, and stray hairs trimmed but they keep cutting it shorter even when I say I’m “growing” it out. I go to the groomers only for bathing and drying really. I groom her every week, removing undercoat and brush her every day. How can I communicate I don’t want her hair cut shorter and still get the areas I want trimmed?
@netaearl2389
@netaearl2389 3 года назад
Can you just tell them 'bath and dry only please, no cutting - I do that myself'. It's what I do. 🥰

What type of comb do you recommend? I have a 5 month old sheltie. I have taken him to the groomers twice so far. Once when I got him and yesterday. I was wondering what type of comb and brush do you recommend for me to buy now that it is getting hotter in Texas. I have seen wide tooth combs and tight tooth combs in the stores. Would appreciate it thanks

I use metal combination combs. Generally a "Greyhound" comb. I know funny name for a comb isn't it. But, I tend to stick to those kind of combs. Metal combination comb or a greyhound comb and never a comb with a handle. I have YET to find one that works well for me. Good luck to you!

@@marianotto8332 sorry, not shaving and cutting a sheltie's coat is a myth. Shaving and cutting a sheltie actually makes you detect ticks faster. In Australia, many vets at SASH shaved a Samoyed for finding ticks, because the ticks there can paralyse every part of a dog's body, including the legs, heart and respiratory organs. Those ticks are called paralysis ticks. and are deadly.
