3 Jazz Phrasing Problems You Need To Fix In Your Playing

You probably already figured out that knowing scales, arpeggios, and Jazz chords are not really enough to be able to play a great Jazz Solo.
It can be frustrating and seem like magic when you listen to great jazz phrases like Wes or George Benson but there are ways to work on this, and it is not magic, it is just a bit of work.
But you will sound better if you fix it!

I liked the video, especially your attention to accented notes--mainstream articulation doesn't always sound as good on saxophone as it does on guitar--different beasts. What really helped me work on my phrasing? Find a metronome slow enough that it that clicks once every 8 beats. Or once every 16 beats. Landing on the downbeat can definitely sound boring, but rhythmically ambiguous solos sound worse. Jazz, Funk, and R&B musicians seem to agree on the importance of knowing where the downbeat is, even if you avoid playing on them.

The first solos I was given to transcribe by my teacher (over 40 years ago!) were Charlie Christian's on "Till Tom Special", Lester Young's on "Lady, Be Good" (the famous small group version from 1936) and Remo Palmieri's half-chorus on the Dizzy Gillespie/Charlie Parker version of "All The Things You Are". I know these might strike you as ancient, but there's some good jazz language in them.

Another great video. The only problem I have is keeping up with and somehow incorporating all the wonderful stuff you are putting up. It is like drinking out of a firehose. I think that this advice on accents goes back to what the early jazz players did -- find a groove that sounds good and go with it.
@nivrox95
@nivrox95 3 года назад
Very good advice but you get all this from transcribing solos .thats how learned jazz phrasing mostly.thats very important and a fun way to learn from the masters,and better in my opinion for guitarist not to transcribe only guitar solos! Trumpet and sax solos are great on guitar and expand your musical vocabulary,time feel and all. Also, about ending a phrase with a short note,it feels kinda old fashioned if you play it the way you played it and for me the long note sounds more interesting and doesn’t hurt the groove.its common in modern jazz guitar players.

How do you get the tone? I recently bought a similar guitar (the Ibanez as73) and short of switching to the neck pup and rolling tone back I’m a bit shy of a jazz tone I’m happy with. I have a spring reverb pedal, and I hear a bit of reverb here, but maybe also a bit of drive? Also, flats or rounds? Sounds like rounds to my relatively untrained ear. Thanks for the great videos! Been playing more guitar lately (mostly a bassist) and your videos have been a huge help
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 3 года назад
Hi David, I almost never roll back my tone-knob unless I am stuck with a very bright amp. I do use reverb and sometimes delay, but not spring reverb, I don't like those. There is a link to the Sonotone strings I use in the video description :) Since this is as much about the amp as it is about the guitar then maybe check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SlV9zjmEUQM.html And see if you can get some inspiration for settings that fit your amp.

Jens, could you do a video on how, after learning a melody on guitar like Yardbird Suite, I could convert that into a slowed down chord melody arrangement ? My biggest problem with Jazz is finding harmonizations that I find pleasing and easier than what I usually what I can decipher from what’s written. I saw a video where someone broke the harmony down to very simple arrangements for singalong, but I want to roll like Tal Farlow was doing in his later years, I saw him play before he passed away and I was deeply moved. I prefer chord-melody arrangements, but I only seem to be able to play chords or melody separately if I’m lucky lol I think it’s a matter of knowing what to practice to achieve this .. I’ve got time but no money 😩👨🏻 your channel is 😎
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 3 года назад
If you want to learn chord melody then start with less active melodies instead of Yardbird suite. There is no reason to shoot yourself in the foot as the first thing you do 🙂

@@JensLarsen Hi Jens, understood. I have hundreds of hours of great jazz audio in my library, but that’s the problem. I can’t tell what’s easy and what’s hard, most of it seems hard. If I work on a melody or a bassline long enough, and I figure it out, but it’s all so very difficult. Also, my time is fragmented to other musicalities. This is something I’d like to do just for my own enjoyment, while I’m still able bodied and with us here in my later years..I’m also stuck with a solid body guitar with a humbucker to do it on; not sure if that’s having an effect on my psyche, but I have amplified it appropriately, and when I figure out some lines, I could pretty much tell if it’s right or not, so know when to keep going or write it down. Unfortunately, I’m lazy, so I end up having to learn the same thing more than once. Anyway, good lick to you and always enjoy your perspective on jazz in general.
@jimkangas4176
@jimkangas4176 3 года назад
@@shipsahoy1793 Start by taking tunes that have a lot of space in them. For example, the melody in Autumn Leaves has whole notes or spaces depending on how you play it. He didn't go into it here, but phrasing is really important and one thing that beginners don't get early on. If you can control phrasing, then you can work the melody and bass in more easily.

@adhoc37
@adhoc37 3 года назад
You mention how legato is often used in jazz... I was wondering if you might plan to do a video or have done one which explains a particular facet of this technique or other ones. For example, I'm staring at a ballad arrangement which has 2-4 chords per bar. It is very hard to arrive at emulating how a voice could so beautifully sing the melody in creating a smooth articulation of the chord sequence when one is chasing them up and down across the fretboard. Maybe you could outline how one could do that so that the disjointed sounds between the chords sound more joined up? I guess George Benson is a great example but what exactly are his technique(s) - I suppose legato slides... Are there other techniques? I guess phrasing, such as emphasising beats, helps to draw attention away from spaces but there is such a strong tendency to emphasise every chord when you get there - " jump! yeah, I got there ! Now for the next one !" Sounds like a British commuter train shuddering to a halt at a station.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 3 года назад
Thank you! To me it just sounds like you are trying to play something that is technically difficult, and it has nothing to do with legato in Jazz lines. It sounds like you are reading a chord melody transcription?
