Hi! Welcome to Briones Pickleball.
My name is Jordan Briones (co-founder of PrimeTime Pickleball), and I've started this channel to provide you the best pickleball content on RU-vid. My goal (and passion) is to help you become the best player that you can be.
Slowing the ball down is an unbelievably important skill. No matter if you are a complete beginner, or if you are playing at an intermediate or high level, you MUST know how to slow the game down. It's very easy to hit the ball hard, but what takes hours and hours of practice, is how to actually slow the ball down. In this video, we talk about exactly how to do this, and the reasons why you need to be able to.
If you'd like to receive a FREE doubles strategy mini-course, visit brionespickleball.com
*We may still be working on it, so get on our list so that you can be FIRST in line to receive it!

Hi Jordan! We have been practicing what you showed when we had our lesson with you. I need to come back for another lesson and work on the backhand reset shot and full backhand swing. Resetting the shot works all of the time and is a great tip instead of attacking it and hitting it into the net, just take practice and discipline! Great Video and see you soon.

It's hard and not logical to counterattack in the transition zone.
@robertdoran7387
@robertdoran7387 2 года назад
In the transition zone you are going to be mostly on the defensive catching balls low about knee height. From that position it is nearly impossible to go on the offensive. Best you can hope for is giving him back a ball that drops low in his kitchen. He can't attack a low bouncing ball at his knees. And it gives you time to move forward to the NVZ line. Absorb pace. Drop it low and slow. He can't attack those. Go back to the video starting around 1:40. The whole point of this video is summed up here. 6:44 through 6:54 Also see 5:21 through 5:37 Practice this drill beginning at 7:03 through 8:25 He answers your question specifically here.10:25 IMPORTANT 12:00 to 12:39

This skill is absolutely essential for beginners. Congrats the move, the house and the new court. Would it be possible for you to recreate or redo some of your older videos from your previous RU-vid channel? For example, this morning I was watching 2 videos about the 3rd shot drop. The first was how to hit a 3rd shot drop. The second was how to know whether to "drop" or "drive" your 3rd shot. As always, great content and instruction.

As always, really good practical content, explanation, and camera angle work. Question, if you're further away from the non-volley zone, does your grip pressure become a little tighter than the 3-4 you suggested when at the kitchen? Does that change?

Hi Jordan, love the camera work. Angle of paddle face and grip pressure are keys for me. I find if I am super soft grip and slightly open paddle face block lands in kitchen, squeeze grip add just a little forward push and block can easily go to 3/4 depth on court. More than enough to get past opponents standing on NVZ line. Do you have any drills that you practice alternating between reset blocks and counter attack blocks that you try to hit past your opponents (I often aim in middle between opponents)

@robertdoran7387
@robertdoran7387 2 года назад
GHAAA! This is the bane of my existence. Trying to fight against the adrenaline from seeing the ball come at me is almost impossible. I have got to learn how to soften my hands. The ball is coming in fast and my reflexes take over as I grip the paddle hard trying to move it to where the ball will be. When the ball makes contact with the paddle face, I still have that reflexive fight or flight response and the death grip the goes along with the threat of a little plastic ball. It is maddening.

@BrionesPickleball

This is how players can begin to work on slowing the ball down. The technique and strategy would be the same when slowing down really fast balls, you would be just making slight adjustments to grip pressure and how much you actually have to help/hit the ball.

Thank you for your great videos, Jordan. I work at trying to slow the ball down and am sometimes successful and sometimes at the NVZ line the ball just hits my paddle and dies. Do you think this is due to paddle angle or not enough follow through??
@BrionesPickleball

Almost 100% of the time, you are NOT hitting the sweet spot. If it dies off your paddle, you are hitting the edge guard somewhere.

I have issues with the loose grip on resets. When I loosen the grip the paddle obviously is less stable and if I don't hit right on the sweet spot the paddle wobbles and the ball doesn't come off cleanly. it's as if the loose grip shrinks the sweet spot
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball Год назад
1. Loose grip is 3-4 out of 10, not a 1 2. Stability issues are typically a result of not hitting the ball in the sweet spot.

Hey Leslie, pickleball is not tennis. In doubles play, you will have to get comfortable hitting shots in the transition zone. To answer your question, it’s not possible to only be at the kitchen line or the baseline (specifically talking about playing as the serving team). You will have to work your way through the transition zone every time.

If you're not playing really good players, dropping back a step or two is fine. Most rec players going to hit the ball back to you instead of trying to drop it in the kitchen. If the pace is a bit fast, that extra step back will help you return the play. If you get the advantage, get back to the kitchen line.
