Do you love good blues rock phrasing like I do? Whether it's Hendrix or 80's metal, I can't ever get enough! But, learning how to do it well can feel like a daunting task. I've been playing since I was about 12 (which was a long time ago) and it wasn't until about 8 years ago that I started to crack the code on how to do it.
One thing I hear a lot as a guitar teacher is "I've been playing for years and I still don't understand how to solo the way I want" or, "I know the scales but don't understand how my favorite players make the same scale sound so much cooler." I know what they're talking about because that's exactly how I felt.
I don't want it to take you over 20 years to get this like it did me, and that's where the 3 keys to killer blues rock phrasing comes in.
So, what are the three keys?
1. The first and obvious key is knowing the scale or scales to use and the key that you're playing in.
2. Of equal to or greater importance than the scales is the ability to see the chords of your song within those scale positions. In other words, if you're using pentatonic position 1, you have to be able to find the notes of your chords in that scale position. This is critical to playing melodically because those are the cool sounding notes or the target notes! This concept will be much easier to understand when you watch the video I made about this.
3. Feel. This is huge! Blues is all about the feel. This is what connects with the listener, it is the emotional content of the music. In blues it's often the bends, vibrato, and timing of the notes being played that makes the solo "feel" so good. While this can take years to master, the tips in this video will quickly get you on your way to playing your own killer blues rock solos.

Well, I'm a professional saxophones player, and I started to play guitar with the intention to improve my left hand skill, since on guitar the left hand works very much. This was the story; the beginning of the story. The rest of the story is that now I'm becoming passionate about guitars, so much that I gave away the cheap acoustic one buying a Jazz guitar first and a Gibson (little devil I guess is the name of this guitar) and I'm planning to get a Les Paul soon or later. I just needed some lessons, so I've found your mail in my mail box, and curiosity killed the cat! So I came to check it out. So thanks for you stuff over here, I think I'll continue to follow your precious lessons.

how could there even be any thumbs down on the views. Thanks man for breaking it all down into what we intermediate players can grasp. I do play in church and on my couch, and I often think about how others feel what I'm trying to play. As Robert Frost poetically once said, "and miles before I sleep. And miles before I sleep."

This lesson should be titled "Key to the Highway" relating to the old blues standard. I believe that your partner (Tim Pierce) and you have helped each other become better guitar teachers. The tutorials from both of you have improvement significantly in the past six months. Not saying the tutorials weren't very good before, however, Papa this lesson is loaded with wisdom. Another awesome lesson Mr. Stache. I'm already up on the CAGED system, but it was totally worth my time to hear your description of visualizing the chords with the scales. There's always some juicy nugget that I've overlooked and you help me make the connection. Today it was visualizing the **minor** chord instead of the major chord when using a minor pentatonic pattern. Of course in Blues we take advantage of the minor pentatonic to access some of the blue notes and overlay the minor pentatonic on a major progression. That's what started me on visualizing the major chord over the minor pentatonic. But then the problem is that pesky major 3rd note. :-) Using the minor shape is less cluttered because it overlays perfectly on the minor pentatonic scale. Of course, I can add or bend into that major 3rd as needed. Good stuff. Rock on!

I get it now. Iv been meaning to do the little stickers on the fret board so I kno all the notes. I'm gunna do it right now.you are a good teacher for sure. Ppl think if u kno something u can teach it. Not true. There's things that people forget to tell ya cuz its second nature. That's the difference in bad /good teacher;what they remember to tell ya. Most great players say " I practiced" but practice doesn't get you any were without knowledge. Ya can try to build a house eventually your gonna read a book and that put the knowledge into practice.thanks man I like when I feel like I've earned a skill point, especially on guitar/drums/bass. It makes me feel inspired so thanks for helping me get my skill points up. Its midnight . tommorows(today's)the 4th I'm gunna play for a bit n hit the heyyy hoooo heeyyy hoooo. Happy independence day papa Mustachio. Don't forget to give the ladies that 'ol mustache ride . -D

Papa stache, I'm currently doing this so it's cool to stumble across this. I still have alot of practicing to be able to see which chord/shapes you're playing in real time as you're playing. I got lost when you started moving around in a chord progression 11ish minutes in. I know what you're doing, but I can't mentally see the shapes/notes on the fretboard quick enough to know what chord you're on in real time. Currently im only practicing major 1-4-5 chords, with the major pentatonic. Trying to freely play and spontaneously change between chords, hitting the 3rds as I mix between chords and pentatonics in different areas on the neck.

Awesome lesson Brett. You are really maturing as a teacher [sacrilege...I know-- I couldn't think of a better term]. You might want to learn the Eric Clapton F/U fingering of the Eminor bar, because it always looks like you're playing an Emajor. Clapton, on the other hand, always looks like he's flipping the audience the bird when he plays the chord. "Middle finger flashing for all to see..."

Thanks for the lesson. When I'm hitting licks should I be playing the scale that corresponds with the cord? For ex the 1-4-5 prog. would be the scales for the 1 cord when the 1 cord is in rhythm...scales under the 4 cord when the 4 chord is strummed..etc...seems like a dumb question but I'm basically trying to make my lead playing more harmonious and musical
