What would happen if you suddenly just stopped training? Well I stopped training for 3 months (90 days), and in this video I share with you what happened next, including:
- How much muscle I lost
- How my strength and training performance was affected
- How much fat I gained
- What happened to my injuries
- How may confidence was affected
- What happened to my healthy habits and routines
I also have video footage comparing my physique before and after. This was the longest layoff I've ever had from lifting and the gym, so the impact in certain areas was significant!
I included a reference from a Sean Nalewanyj video about how much muscle is lost during a layoff. You can see the full video here:
• How Long Does It Take ...
Since making this video, I have started a 6 week training programme to get back into shape. I will be posting the results of this soon!

Have you ever had a big layout from training/lifting/the gym? What was the impact?

3 months out of gym and diet. Same as you.. All in or all out. I don't know if its healthy to go all out of diet but my biggest fear was heart health everytime I had a junk meal. Gracefully back to gym now and sticking to my diet.

hardest part of coming back after time off is letting go of the ego. trying to jump right back into what you used to be able to lift, just means you get hurt and have to spend more time away...

3 Months? How about 5 years!?!? :-) Being struck down with a life long cardiac problem back in 2013 I felt I completely lost my identity. Like you I had been in training since my early teens and exercise was a way of life - it was always something I did, no question. I like the comments around the diet - I was exactly the same! I should of most definitely kept my diet in check but after falling into a deep depression I found food a real comfort. I also had a bad attitude that saw me eat all the wrong types of food simply because I didn’t need to fuel my workouts (as I wasn’t having any!). Ridiculous really, isn’t it?!? As it goes I had my quarterly cardiac review a few weeks back and was told I can do some gentle exercise so whilst lifting is out I am 100% committed to getting back on my exercise bike. I now have my diet in check too and with the help of an online system I am 11lbs down in the past 2.5 weeks Keep up the great VLogs, Luke. Always a great watch. Cheers
@LukeSherran
@LukeSherran 5 лет назад
I can't even imagine 5 years off and what they would do to my psychology! Diet is such a funny thing; but my mindset is the same as yours. I comfort eat and I know that it will make things worse, but for some reason I continue to do it anyway. Oh and yes, not eating the "right food" because of not training was my go to excuse! Crazy. Really pleased to hear things are improving - 11 lbs down is great especially in such a short time frame! Keep it going!

Good thing is, it will come back soon. I took months off from the gym before or working out, due to a death in the family and another time because i hurt myself. Each time i can remember going back it took me 2 months to get fully back but after a month you will see your self start to get insane again. So the temporary weakening from months off will dissipate as you consistently keep working out again, id say 2 months you'll be very happy again. Side note: i was at 280 max and easily was benching 230, now i can barely lift 230 after coronavirus shutdown. It will take some time, but time is on your side! Ha haa.

Thanks for posting this video. I have been studying to take a test to enter medical school for the past 8 months. I am now 2 days away from the test and stopped going to the gym in the past 3 months. I have noticed a shot to my self-esteem (I am embarassed to take off my shirt...or even put one on). While it depresses me to see my body devolve so quickly, I also appreciate the humbling experience not going to the gym and sacrifice has made me. There is a part of me that is SUPER motivated to train again (next week!), but there is another part that is scared to begin because I do not know where to start.
@LukeSherran
@LukeSherran 4 года назад
That sounds very relatable mate. When it comes to getting started again, my approach was doing things that I enjoyed the most to form the habit again. So, I started off by prepping just one meal per day (lunch), and when I got into a routine I started making more meals in advance and planning. Same with the gym. I just did the things I enjoyed the most like bench press, squats, curls and didn't focus too much on a plan at first. Getting past this initial first step was a good foundation moving forwards. I hope that helps, and good luck getting back on it!

I was forced to take a 3 month break from working out and getting my 160g of protein every day because of a demanding project working as a structural and pipe welder. I think I was very fortunate to not loose major gains because I was dealing with heavy iron plates and carrying heavy bags. However I lost most of my strength in bench and deadlift and it has took me 2 months of hard work to feel remotely closer to how strong I felt right before I stopped working out.

I cycle to work and go on walks but apart from that don't excersise, i have adjusted calories to maintainence and so far (I have been off for 1 month) i have lost about 400g which is likely water from muscle as I am not taking creatine. training since november 2008 at the gym and since the last two years only doing calisthenics and learning skills. Its the first time in my whole training life that I am taking a long rest period. I am now in my fourth week and wanted to jump back today but told my head: Nope, atleast one more week! So I have a month of rest. Maybe just maybe I take another month because I start to study and need to get into the routine of things. Going back to training for 30-60 minutes a day is easy as hell. The hard part is letting your body AND Mind take a rest. I need to defeat this ego, never thought It could be that hard. I am here from the lock down lol. Just hit the gym last week and noticed my mass is softer. Hopefully 30 days of good diet and training my mass will get back to normality - I feel like my muscles will restore fast. Odd my training in the bench I was still able to hold 265 for 3 reps - still lost some strength though. Though I was doing DIPS as much as I could and hammer curls here and there. As for legs 40 pound dumbbell squats - not much, but I tried to keep it up. I feel like 30 days my mass will restore fast and in 60 days ill be back to my normal self again.

The worst part for me when I stop training is the overall loss of quality in my sleep. After a day of good training, I can sleep like a bear and I don't grind my teeth at night. Consuming energy at the gym is what helps me regulate my anxiety, keep a good posture and, of course, have more confidence.

@LukeSherran

Oh man, I feel you. The worst condition I've ever been in was after the birth of my daughter. Sleep deprived, eating junk, no motivation to train. Best thing I could recommend in this instance is start small to get back into the training mindset. Start with aiming to do 10 mins of bodyweight training in the morning, and then build on it as your motivation starts to return. Also, take photos. What really kicked my ass into gear was seeing photos of my overweight physique - the mirror lies, and when I saw the photos I couldn't wait to start getting back in shape. Good luck, and congrats on your baby! :)

Gym opened up again. I haven’t lifted since March 18th. Through in a push day on Monday and pull day yesterday. I was moving 275 on flat bench, I was struggling finishing 3X10 of 135. Sore as hell. I feel like my arms broken because I can’t touch my face with it, I’m so sore. Plan is to ease back into my routine and try not to push to hard in the beginning to prevent injury. The positive from all this is that I have even more motivation to work harder in the gym.

@LukeSherran
@LukeSherran 4 года назад
It depends on a lot of factors, but initially be aware that your strength and work capacity will likely be diminished - so reduce the weights and the volume at first. I too had cramps; at first I thought this was due to hydration, but realised in my case it was just the fact the muscle was fatiguing very quickly. If a muscle cramped, I reduced the weight again and just went for higher rep sets. I personally don't do much of a warm up. I normally do about 10 minutes on the cross trainer/elliptical machine to get warm and get the blood flowing, and then I do training specific warm ups i.e. light weights on a particular exercise, building up to my working sets. I could probably benefit from stretching and mobility work before training too, but my time is often limited!

This shut is has me wigging out about my workouts -- am 57 and worried I will get out of shape. Still eat right, walk three miles a day and do dumb bell training and somehow this does not feel like enough for the level I was at. Hopefully by doing this I will regain all my losses sooner when the gym opens? Please tell me I am right!!!
@LukeSherran
@LukeSherran 4 года назад
If you're eating right, keeping active and have a set of dumbbells, there is a lot you can do to stay in shape and maintain what you have. At 57 it will be harder to "get back what you had", but even so, getting strength and fitness back is always quicker than building it in the first place.

Ha haa.

My advice would be to start slowly, and patiently build back up to your previous level. So reduce the weights and expect to be weaker with less work capacity. However, regaining strength is a much faster process than getting it in the first place. Hope it returns quickly!

I went to the gym 6 days a week and havent been in 4 months because of a big move and illnesses that followed. I have lost a lot of muscle and it just seems like an enormous mountain to reclimb just to get back what i had. Where the hell do you start?
@LukeSherran
@LukeSherran 2 года назад
I started by just doing what I felt like, and routines that I enjoyed. Initially no structure or plan, it was just a case of rebuilding the habit of going to the gym. After a couple of weeks I then started to follow a structured program agaij but with reduced frequency and volume, slowly building back up to what I was doing before. The more "fun" you can make the early stages, the less of an uphill struggle it will be to get started again. It will really suck when you can't lift the same weights as before, BUT, it comes back much quicker than it takes to gain it in the first place. Good luck! 💪

I've had such an up and down journey with fitness so far! Thankfully I am in a sport that encourages me to increase my strength and cardio (HMB - it's the best sport ever check it out Full Contact Medieval Fighting NOT re-enactment!! ;) ) Unfortunately I've had a few injuries that have periodically hindered my training and I find that so depressing -not being able to move how i could before, it sometimes ends up with lack of motivation to do anything on my own outside of the team side. It's also so hard when I know I could lift heavier when I have to start off from scratch again - but I like to try and focus this time on getting as perfect form as I can so that when I get back to my PB I'm doing it right. Actually this morning was the first morning I've done some hard cardio before work in a few months and I feel SO much better! just got to catch that bug again - it's not easy for everyone

you have to see the big picture. Training is not just for "looking good" it is doing SO much more to your body and mind. Do something atleast 2-3x times per week. Do fun exercises, go for a run or a swim. Take for example a push a pull and a leg exercise and do something every two or three days. You don´t need to be at the gym for an hour a day. I do some exercises at the morning and some at noon, I am not training for longer than maybe 20-30 Minutes and its scientifically proven that 2-3 exercise "blocks" per day are superior than one big chunk

getting those injuries better may be the best benefit from this lay off. Those pains you may want to get your blood checked and see if there is the start of some arthritic condition. Do you get your blood checked twice a year through the NHS ?
@LukeSherran
@LukeSherran 5 лет назад
Yeah the injury recovery is definitely a positive outcome! As much as I love the NHS, I can't remember the last time I had a check up. They are so stretched, I'm still awaiting results on v very specific issues from March/April! Because resources are so low, they tend to be more reactive than proactive in terms of diagnosing and treating. Still, it's a heck of a lot better than if you're in the US with no health insurance!

So yea, I'm here because of fucking coronavirus. It's doubtful I'll be back in the gym before July and have been off training since late March. Now, I know this is a poor excuse but I JUST CAN'T train at home. I'm a "go all out" or "don't bother" kinda guy. Knowing that I can't hit all my muscle groups 100% at home, I have just stepped back and said bollocks. The only excercise I've been doing is walking. I'm still eating well but not eating as much as I'm not working out. I still look pretty good considering the circumstances. But, I wanted to ask, how long would it truly take before there is a considerable difference? Admittedly, I have lost a small amount of size. To be expected. But, how long would it truly take if I still continue to "eat to maintain". Thanks! And this question is open to all! Could it be that because I've put in weeks, months and years of effort that it would also take a while to lose?....
@samg9880
@samg9880 4 года назад
Sam Weldon I’m the same with you, literally no motivation to train at home. Good news though, I’ve previously had a long period off the gym due to a shoulder injury, took 3 months off, kept up diet with no training. I ended up losing my abs and obliques, and visibly lost a bit of muscle. Thing is when I returned to the gym the thing that helped me is that I accepted this is my body now and that I’m gonna do all I can to improve it, you’ve got to forget what you looked like in the past, since comparing your improvements with your older self will not motivate you as much. First few weeks you’ll be aching and not be no where near the weight you used to do, however this is the hardest part and once your’e past the barrier of getting back into a routine you’ll see your strength quickly rise, quicker than you’ll think. Strength wise I was back to 80-90% after around 1.5 months training. Took me around 2-2.5 months to get back my muscle mass and I was working more on reps and intensity to lower my body fat. This is training with high intensity, going for high reps with short break times between sets, 5 days a week minimum. That’s my personal experience, you might be able to regain the mass and strength even quicker. Once the gyms open just focus on improving your current physique without thinking about the past and the quick strength and mass gains you restore will motivate you even more to push yourself. I’m ready to do it all again after this virus things over, It starts slow first couple of weeks then you see fast changes as long as training and diets on point! Enjoy this time as a rest and try not to think about lost gains, you still have the muscle memory!
@LukeSherran
@LukeSherran 4 года назад
I can really relate to this - I'm very much "all in" or "all out", so doing small home workouts doesn't really do it for me in the same way. Because it's still unclear when I'll be able to train again, I have started doing "bits" at home, but nothing that comes close to what I was doing in the gym. However, even just getting a quick chest pump from pushups can help with muscle maintenance, and does a world of good for your psychology. Upper body is easy to maintain for me; I have weights, bands, pull up bars etc. What I struggle with the most is legs. I really miss heavy squats and leg machines. But as Sam G said, focus on rebuilding when we can train again.
