What we’re liking (and what we’re hating) about our long-term 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Aspire PHEV, presented by its custodian Tom Place.
Tom provides an update on the Chasing Cars long-term review of the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and details the features that are working well after 3 months and those that have become annoying.
Specs of our Outlander long-term review vehicle:
* PHEV engine
* Aspire trim grade ($61,990)
* 2.4L + two electric motors
* Red diamond premium paint ($940)
* Black/suede interior
* 20-inch wheels
* $68,150 driveaway
As always, we don’t accept advertising from car manufacturers, and we’re powered by Budget Direct - so this is an independent, honest review of the Mitsubishi Outlander.

Phev technology needs to be properly analyze if you really want to save Gas. Heaps of people out there have a Phev SUV but they use it improper and unsuitable to their surroundings, In short it was use wrongly. For example, many out there owns a Phev but when they travel long distance they shift the Regenerate Braking in to Drive mode or D witch is wrong because it will consume a lot of Gas because the force of regenerate breaking still high and that engine will have more difficulty because the brake is still stuck and it needs more gas, The Proper way of using phev on a highway is shift your steering wheel shifter to B-O and if your going down a hill then that's the time you shift to K1 up to K5 if you need to add a little on your battery. Phev is a very complex technology, If you know how to use it then you get a good result.

You didn't mention the exceptional road handling and all the safety assistants that make the vehicle confident to drive in a daily basis. Theb driver seats imo is fantastic, but I think perhaps that's just a personal preference. Also talking about spare whee. many cars now don't have one, they just have a patch kit which works well.

My plan is to get one of these with a bi directional charger. So my solar can charge it. That 20kwh battery can run the house after dark or in a blackout. Then if you dont have the sun (solar) for a couple of days during a storm etc. You can go for a run in charge mode. Then run the house again. A 20kwh battery would cost about $18000 so shared cost with the car really.😊

@@NoelRCrawford simply using ‘Save’ mode on highways (>80kph) on long trips. At the end of one weekend out of town trip (~1000kms), it averaged a low 6L/100kms. It also helps that my usual daily drive is ~53kms and well within the battery range only consuming ~12kWh per day. Tarmac mode is nice to drive on but will definitely use the petrol engine. You can combine that while in ‘Save’ mode and may still give reasonable economy which I haven’t explored.

Thanks Tom great 3 month review, I've got my PHEV Exceed Tourer on order. Hopefully arrives in Feb 2024 (that's the norm these days). I believe it to be one the best bang for buck phevs. This car will be driven to and from work and then the occasional long trips. If someone was really worried about a spare wheel over a long trip I would honestly just have a space saver up in the basket on the roof and if you're driving around in the suburbs you can easily call for help for a tyre replacement so doesn't really bother me about having a spare.

@Bruno - san I have done 23,000 km I my Outlander after having done nearly 190,000 in a RAV4 Hybrid. Long distance driving I'd have the Rav 4, I acheived 6.7ltr/100km, with some heavy towing as part of that mileage. Currently sitting on 2.3ltr/100km in the Outlander again that is some towing as well. But my driving is now small round town commute. 78% of driving time is electric. For me given my current situation, I'd have the Outlander over the Rav4 as I can get down to below 1ltr/100km if I drive sensibly. As for a Tesla, I'd buy a Hyundai Ionic 5 any day. My choice to buy the PHEV was around the need for towing upto 1700kg.

Assuming your driving or parked in the sun all day, you could drive maybe 5-10 mins a day on solar alone. So manufacturers claim of 1.7l/100km plus electricity exceeded by 500%. Used it have an Outlander turbo diesel AWD. On a trip like that it would average 5.7 l/100km. You could drive from Sydney, fill up at Hay then drive to Adelaide. How backwards we have gone. You spent circa 3 to 4 hours of your trip adding electricity. I spent 10 minutes at Hay. EVS make sense for 90% of needs and with zero tailpipe emissions. Counting your petrol and electricity vs my diesel my emissions would have been similar on that 3k journey but my inconvenience zero. Even the petrol only MY23 Outlander highway rating of 6.1 or combined 7.5 would have been an easier drive with similar or less emissions. So the PHEV is not saving money on a road trip even if you bother to add extra electricity stops. A model Y tesla doing this trip would prove why a PHEV hybrid or any hybrid is a bad choice. No, I don't own a Tesla. I own a Pajero Sport which will average 7.5l on that trip with one fuel stop only too, just like the Outlander diesel did.

The vehicle comes into its own in city and suburban driving. Going from one end of Aussie to another not so much.

if you look at Ford PHEV , BMW PHEV and other PHEV's , they are all ranging on the same mark. the moment the battery is depleted, you are carrying extra 400KG of extra weight. While traditional hybrid like RAV4 Hybrid has very small battery, hence it can do 4.6L/100km (but it can't do EV mode for 84KM ) PHEV shines on daily commute (less than 100KM) where you can basically not burning any petrol at all.

@@kalengkong with a hybrid car, the battery charges as you drive and then you can use its power even if the battery has been depleted earlier. Does this not happen with a *PHEV* car? Thanks

@@rohitnijhawan5281 it charges the battery as well in PHEV. Everytime you cruising or braking. It charges the battery too. Same with hybrid

Yes moreover the phev benefits become questionable when you have to shell out more than $61k for the Outlander and that's not even top spec. I think it's necessary to consider how many years of driving is required before breaking even on the purchase amount spent.

You gave fuel economy for the trip and only the trip. As you say, long trips aren't regular usage for most of us. You've done 7000k, how many litres have you put in?

Yep, we gave a fuel economy update for road trips, which was the main topic for this video. At the finish line we’ll give the full breakdown of how we fuelled this car and what it cost.

all these bloody fanboys on here needing self validation for their purchase. I had to get one for work to cut my taxable income, I fking hate it. I should have gotten the Rav4 but the Fringe benefit wasnt there for the toyota as its not a PHEV the same as the mistushitty.
