I cannot tell you how grateful I am for recently finding your channel. I am a geek at heart and love learning. I so appreciate all the scientific information that you include in your videos. I've been a natural for 9 years and never thought at this stage of my journey I'd be back to struggling to figure out why my hair is not thriving. 2 things your channel has helped me figure out: (1) my hair is chronically dehydrated and (2) the reason it dehydrated is because I've been co-washing for years and had loads of product buildup 😩 I had given up on shampooing because it caused my hair to feel so brittle. I tried every sulfate-free shampoo that a Naturalists has ever recommended and always had the same dry/brittle feeling results so finally I just gave up 😔 Because of this channel I decided to give shampooing another try. I purchased Design Essentials' Honey Creme shampoo and have just finished washing my hair. Immediately I could tell that a good cleansing is what my hair has been missing all these years. It not only felt clean but to my shock...it felt soft 😮 I am so excited I could cry from joy right 😭 I know this message is long, but I wanted to tell you thank you, thank you, thank you for what you're doing to educate us ❤️
I just started using blue magic grease for the first time since going natural 12 years ago. I’m so mad that I listened to nay sayer’s about grease. For the first time since being natural, I’ve had the best and most consistent, non frizzy twist outs ever! And a little goes a long way. When I think of all the money I spent on styling products 🤬
Not using silicones was the worst idea I ever listened to. When I stopped using them I felt like my hair was susceptible to so much breakage every time I detangled. I had tried so many different conditioners and none of them worked for me. Now I’m back on silicones and my hair feels so much better.
@@noelstarks2861 Lately I've been using amika kure conditioner, which is really thick but melts my tangles away. But I also like using aussie miracle moist conditioner and the 3 deep conditioner.
I agree with you sister because I was the laziest natural who used to wash my hair with bar soap and NEVER deep conditioned until about 3 years ago when I started watching my beautiful Black sisters on RU-vid teach me how to care for my hair. Thankfully my hair managed to somehow stay healthy and fairly long. After I started putting oil in my hair, the thickness is back and my length...nice!!!
I listened to those "no oil, no butter" girlies when they said it was bad for your hair, and stopped using them, and my hair saw THEE WORST BREAKAGE of its' entire Life 😭😭😭 just touch it and it broke off!! I was so mad! I've recently began incorporating oils in my hair again and I will never look back!!
@@multifandomharlot I also bought in and after a few months thought ok, my hair doesn’t need oil! After a little while longer my hair was thinning and breaking off. My ridiculous self could not figure out why 🤦🏾♀️. Then I remembered, girl, let’s go back to what has ALWAYS worked! I’m back to my tried and true leave-in and oil!
I listened to those "no oil, no butter" girlies when they said it was bad for your hair, and stopped using them, and my hair saw THEE WORST BREAKAGE of its' entire Life 😭😭😭 just touch it and it broke off!! at a certain point your hair gets damaged from these constant practices and you will experience breakage. The hair has holes in it and is wore down by the time you stopped.
@@jlovesj3335 yes I learned that the hard way. I will never stop using oils now, I can't believe I allowed myself to be swayed and almost destroyed my hair. My hair is on the road to recovery, it's not what it once was, but it's getting there.
The "30 day detox" worked wonders for me but I think "No Oils / No Butters" was taken out of context. I have VERY low porosity 4a hair, oil & protein quickly makes my hair verrrry hard and repellent and almost everything but humectants would sit on my hair or flake. I learned the culprit isn't oils & butters but rather not shampooing often. I fixed my moisture issue by returning to weekly shampoo and being conservative with oil & protein and reaching for glycerine & honey based products.
About protective styles for 6 weeks. For me, I can’t keep braids in for more than 2..3 weeks at the most. I just can’t go that long without washing my scalp and hair. Since I braid/passion twist my hair myself, I usually take down in 2 weeks, provide a nice cleanse and deep condition and then reinstall. I love washing my hair!!!
Thank you for breaking this down for those in the back who refuse to use oils/butters/grease and their hair consistently looks a hot mess!! Lol!! You are the best!
For me, the thing that worked horribly for my hair was pre-pooing with coconut oil. My hair didn’t like it; it became dry and hard. I do pre-poo, only when needed, but not with coconut oil. 😅
Coconut oil dries my hair as well. However, I learned from Tonya that I was using it incorrectly. I started sectioning my hair, gave a slight water mist on the roots and ends, then applied the Coconut Oil and massaged it down.. I also applied a little olive oil. No more dryness. Although this worked I stopped using Coconut oil. I really like Jamaican Black Castor Oil, X Virgin olive oil and Jojoba oil. Oh and Blue magic😄
Thanks for the knowledge! I jumped back to everything; grease, sulfates(sodium laureth only), and cones. My 2 year old has armpit length hair and I”m not breaking the bank over hair products. My hair is locked and I learned our hair really doesn’t like being manipulated so much because my hair is down to my waist and it’s never been able to get that long
First of all, I'm just thankful that hurricane Ian wasn't so rough on us though it's still very windy and a few trees down in my area. My prayers go out to Florida and the islands though. So a product I didn't like, perhaps I wasn't using it correctly, was a Thalia wajid detangling product which actually caused quarter size mats in my hair and made the detangling process worse. Hope everyone is doing well, especially if you were evacuated from Florida.
@@pmbrownslb okay, thank you for the recommendation. Kroger had a basket or two full of hair care products on sale for curlies and I believe there may have been some African pride in there as well but I don't recall what it was. Baskets are probably empty by now, oh no, we will focused on a hurricane so there may be things still there.
Thank you Dear, for you concern for Florida. I live in Central Florida and it was rough, but to the Glory of GOD, my family and others came through!!! 🌞
I use to listen when people said no silicone and what is the best product for my hair. When I stopped and listened to my hair and my hair is thanking me.
You are the best!! My bestie tried to fuss at me because I did my twist out with Blue Magic Grease. My curls were fabulous and bounce ❤. Thank you for all you do😊😊😊
When I first went natural, I was using oil only. I kept wondering with all the effort I was putting in why did my hair look so dull. Thank goodness, I had enough sense to pull out my BLUE MAGIC.. my hair came alive.. Thick, moist the shine was outstanding. There is a place for oil on my scalp & when I remoisturize.
I feel like the no oil and no butter is so trendy cause a lot of ppl were just using oil wrong. If you use them right it shouldn’t be an issue, but a lot of ppl dont or they dont get an oil that works with their hair type and texture (like fine or course hair not 4c 3a types) so they get set back more than it helps. And i noticed a lot of ppl who benefit from it are the exact types who were not shampooing the oil off soon enough. So i think it’s smart to take a break from oils and butters to relearn how to care for their hair without improper oil usage. Thankfully i never had that issue so i will keep using my oils. But i have rethought how i use my oils. Like i can use oils to detangle before a wash, on my ends after washing, and for hot oil treatments, but i cant put oil on my scalp and wait a week or 2 to wash my hair, it has to be washed the next day if i put oil on my scalp, because even just a little bit of oil on my scalp for over 24 hours and it itches do bad. So now i just use oil differently rather than completely cut out
At the start of my natural journey I jumped onto the oil bandwagon. Supposedly, old-fashioned grease was bad. But after every oil I tried left my hair dry and crunchy, I knew it was time to ignore that advice. Thank you for your helpful, science-supported videos!
What's so funny is I remember my hair growing naturally beautiful before looking into the do called natural hair community. 😂😂. I also remember using heating tools before hearing anything like heat protection. It worked wonderfully for me. Just me getting back to ME
Wash and go's are a big no no for my hair... I recently used AS I AM Long and Luxe shampoo on my type 4 low porosity hair and it was absolutely amazing 😍. My curls were sooooo defined and my hair looked and felt amazing. Can't wait until my next wash day! Thanks for the recommendation 💞
Not using combs and brushes was one of the worst natural hair trends for me. At the beginning of my natural hair journey I wasn't well informed and I didn't even know about hair types and there weren't even a lot of content creators with my hair type (4b/4c) on RU-vid then. I was following type 3 girls and it almost damaged my hair. I had a lot of single strand knots and my hair was just very unmanageable
Since the pandemic I stopped coloring and straightening my hair. This really helped to get my hair back to a healthy state. I no longer brush it when it is wet.
I just want to take the time to say thank you so much for your page. I had my daughter in January of this year at the same time that I cut off my 5 year old Sisterlocs. I was very afraid for my postpartum shedding period this year because with my son previously I lost a good amount of locs because of how thin my hair became. I made a promise to stick to an old school routine for sake of experimentation and I honestly sometimes can’t believe my own hair. All I use on my hair are shampoo, Hollywood Beauty Chlosterol conditioners, along with my my leave-in and grease. As a refresh I will use pink lotion and grease. I have gone from a TWA to shoulder length in less than a year with this routine along with not manipulating my hair much. When my daughter began to have cradle cap, I started putting grease on her and she saw so many improvements. My son has hair that I allowed him to grow out and my routine works wonders for him as well. Thank you so much for doing the work of the culture and reminding Black women like myself that our people always had it right!!
I went back to using my hair butters for my twisters, braidouts and wash and go. I then add a oil to seal and add shine. I know have less shedding, tangles and ss knots
One thing that I tried that didn’t work for me was co-washing my hair. My hair is so much healthier since I subscribed and start following your channel. Very good information…thank you for sharing your knowledge!🥰
I been saying this. Some of these RU-vidrs have no idea what they are talking about. I said this when I saw those videos. They are and were wrong. Whatever is working for your hair, use and stick to that😀. Thanks for confirming this. A professional.
Fun fact, it took a decade to learn my scalp hates oil (it gets inflamed and itchy) but it LOVES grease!! Seals that moisture in my scalp like a champ!! We each have to find what works best for self, and stop following trends.
The worst thing for me that my hair didn’t like was coconut oil, it made my already high porosity hair EXTREMLY dry, and I experienced unnecessary breakage.
It's because coconut oil is a penetrating oil, it is not sealing hair cuticles. It almost displaces the water/moisture in the hair. That's why it's a good prepoo for high porosity hair, ensuring that the hair don't swell as much as it would during the washing process. Check the pmp videos
I’m almost 60 and have experienced terrible hair loss. I use palm oil and been to pre poo and deep conditioning as well as blue magic grease. I’ve been told it won’t grow it is growing slowly but it’s growing.
Rice water and henna were disastrous for my hair because they work by depositing large particles on the hair. My hair is super fine and high porosity , so it can only take hydrolysed protein deposits, not anything large(including large proteins from raw eggs or mayonnaise) Henna resulted in immediate breakage, plus, my already light brown hair turned a _wicked_ shade of orange. These work well for some people, but my hair hated them .
Oh noooooo. 🥲🥲 I’m wondering if it was the brand of henna. You have to be really careful where you buy it. And that it’s body art henna. I started using CP henna (aloe mix, so it’s not so drying) my hair is thriving and thickening because I too have fine hair. But yea about the color, I knew it would color my pesky grey strands, but after a few days it muted done and it looks more like highlights, so I was like. It’s doable and cute. Better than them pesky grey strands. Lolol. Hang in there. 🙏🏽
@@shelbymcdandan4431 It wasn't the brand. Henna works by deposits on the strand. My strands don't tolerate that well. I lost about 6 inches of dread locs.
Those were the exact two things that ruined my hair too and I am low porosity..I purchased the best Henna out there and my hair said " duces✌🏽"...I had to cut 😫 my mid back hair that took me 5yr from ear length hair...NEVER following ANY trends again...NEVER...I don't care what everyone is saying on RU-vid or ANY where else...NOPE...Didn't try that NO oils NO butter in the first 5 ingredients..I didn't care if it was in the first 3-10 ingredients...Not trying cloves...NOTHING..BUT prayer🙏🏽
I think reducing the 30-Day hair detox to "no oils and butters" did the community a disservice. The problem primarily was that many were not sufficiently cleansing their hair to remove the buildup which lead to chronic dehydration. So the idea was to become familiar with how properly cleansed hair behaves. One thing I never bought into was putting additional oil in the hair. Most products have plenty of oils and even butter in them. Why add more??
I kind of agree. I only prepoo with oils, but then again i twist my hair up with grease. Strategically adding a little oil to a product that isnt working very well can be a good way to use up a jar before buying another product.
the butter clogg your hair period. I stopped doing that and my hair is so much better I just shampoo/conditioner then put a leave in then blow dry then a little oil on my ends. We got duped into thinking our has is so different that the science of hair doesn't apply to us but it does. It's all marketing and scammy stuff on youtube from women who aren't even licensed cosmetologist.
@@personmcdudeguyas long as someone uses a clarifying shampoo in order to get the heavy stuff off, i guess they can use oils and butters until their hearts are content. Just FYI...I don't know if you have considered this before, but you really only need to prepoo if you haven't detangled in a while like more than 2 weeks in order to avoid hair becoming matted when it gets wet. Pre-pooing, deep conditioning, protein...all of these are singular treatments to be used on an as needed basis. They worked and solved the problem. Kinda like taking antibiotics. Continously taking them makes us immune and ineffective the next time we truly need it.
@@MiVidaBellisima ULTA sells water soluble products. Thats where I buy most of my products. SALLY's and Target can be more questionable. But even then, it's a matter of proper use. But once you get used to better quality products it's hard to go back to the lower tier.
Honey, DAX LANOLIN has given my hair life!!!!! My twa is growing like crazy.. it's good to see my beautiful texture like when I was a little girl... It works for me!!!
@@elizabethroblyn1392 yup the Indian hemp and the sure gro one and at times mixture of jbco and olive oil grease saved my hair and I have no issues washing it out
One product I used on my hair that did not work was Coconut oil. It felt as if it was just sitting on the outer layer of my hair. When I used Coconut oil, my hair did not feel nourished and soft💇♀
I went natural in 2015 nd the loc/ lco method was heavy on repeat so i tried the LOC method babyyy when i tell you my hair was not having it at all. Miss Silk had an attitude and she let me know. I had to switch up real quick
Using coconut oil as a prepoo… coconut oil does not work for me. It makes my hair difficult to detangle & the actual strands of hair gets really hard- it felt like protein overload. Some people say coconut oil doesn’t have protein..-> so I don’t know 🤷🏽♀️
Same, I don’t really get the whole no oils thing. But it seems like that ppl on that bandwagon are wash and go girls so I guess it makes sense why they don’t use oils and stuff. …also I’m pretty sure the ppl who created the 30 day hair detox have a subscription model where if u join they help u on ur no oils journey. …so uhh yeah… I guess capitalism😅. I ain’t mad at the hustle tho, especially in this economy😂 For me personally I’m team grease. I just moisturize my hair, seal with grease then wear my hair in twists until the next wash day.
Tea and castor oil everyday, too much for my hair it appears. I believe you mentioned you go every 2 days to moisturize. Im going to try that with clove oil instead. Thanks so much for the amazing information.🦋
Back when everyone was on the coconut oil trend, I wanted it to work soooo bad but it made my hair dryer when moisturizing and sealing. I tried diff brands went to wholefoods etc and coconut oil just said NOPE
PINEAPPLEING! It did NOT help me maintain my curls and look while sleeping. If i was lucky i might've been able to get away with refreshing section by section, but for the most part i had to wet and style all over again 😤 it's the lack of cooperation that makes me wanna take a straightner to it, i tell you! 😩
I looove your content girl and I've learned SO much from you over the years ♡ But I sometimes have a hard time hearing your audio clearly and there's a room echo. A mic would help a lot ♡
OMFG I just had an epiphany looking at the playlists on your channel and realized I used to watch your relaxed hair videos like a decade ago. I knew you looked familiar!
Thank the Lord I stopped with the overnight oil pre-poo ESPECIALLY the red onion oil! Impossible to sleep through that stench. Stopped with drenching leave-in conditioner on soaking hair (pointess). Washing is much easier and quicker with great results.
Great video as usual! In regard to oil, I think it all depends on which oil you use and how you use it. I use an oil mix as part of my prepoo routine and my hair loves it. I tend to prepoo overnight, so the oil has time to do its thing. I only do wash n gos and I don't use oils when I'm styling my hair. I only use a leave-in to moisturize. I found that using oils when I set my hair gave me less definition and allowing my gel to work to its full potential. I hope this doesn't offend the 30-day warriors 😏
I really tried no oils or butters and I have decreased using raw oils and making sure to clarify shampoo to remove build up, & moisturizing before applying any oil.
I think i need to consider getting a more Grease product like blue magic. A lot of people that didn’t do a routine like me and kept with the basic childhood hair product (they always had shoulder lenght hair or a bit shorter) have a much more healthy hair compared to me while my hair is always looking dry even tho i have a curl patern and the same lenght like them. Cowash also been much more difficult to use and makes my hair dry. If i don’t pre poo my hair beforehand I will have a lot of breakage. Im gonna try to do more butters and deff gonna use shampoo and conditioner again instead of only doing a cowash. Thanks for this!
Worst thing was trying to do a wash n go with that blue gel and eco gel. Everyone was raving about the combo so I tried it. My hair was so hard, frizzy and dry. I think in general I don't do well with wash n gos, but that was the worst one ever. If I do them I have to use Uncle Funky's daughter with a very small amount of a hold gel afterward, such as a quarter size amount of ecoslay's jello shot for my entire head.
I tried coconut oil and it just didn't work for me. I did it as a pre-poo and use it as a grease. My hair just didn't like it. It made it so dry. Thank you for sharing!! Love all of your videos. Sending you, curly chemistry and everyone here love and light.❤️❤️🙏🙏☮️☮️
Wash n gos. My curls were cute but the knots were not😂 also I got a sew in for my birthday a couple weeks ago….I’m not about this weave/wig life anymore. I just want some cornrows😂 The maintenance and heat required to maintain this is impossible. Going to the gym everyday doesn’t help either 😂 So I’ll be wearing a hat until next week when I take it out😂
I appreciate your commentary on hair care and products. I wish you consider doing a podcast using wigs and extensions as part of protective styling regimen and what we should be mindful of in doing this. Also, care for your hair if you’re an active swimmer. Thank you so much for your service, and may you and your family have Blessed Holiday and Happy New Year🙏🏾🎉
I co-wash once a week and shampoo once a week. Only curlsmith products. No sulfates or silicones, but its works for me, my hair feels clean. Every hair is different indeed.
Thanks so much for your content. I've been following you for awhile. I changed one simple thing and it made a huge difference - pre-pooing/detangling with coconut oil. I made the decision to loc my hair. Now, I need you to advise on hair care for microlocs. 😀😃😃
The sulfate free shampoo. Had to nip that quick and fast. I will use one after my rinse to minimize color lost but that is it. Also moisturizing and sealing daily is a hard pass. My relaxed hair gets additional moisture maybe a week or so after wash day and looks and feels fine.
Love stuff that weighs my hair down. I can put grease on my whole head (scalp and all) and then slap a butt load of oil on my ends and still be fine. My hair don't care, it's not about to be taken out by weight 😂
Omgosh I could never get bantu knots to come out right braid outs and any style natural 85 did. Lol. My hair just came out looking like a frizzy mess or Medusa like 😆.
Also lots of products that these so called guru's push, did not do any thing except snatch my coins. So I went to operation old school and used the k.i.s.s. technique aka keep it simple sista
@@aquafina6544 oh I totally get that. I had to check myself and stop running out to buy all the recommendations from all these guru’s - since I’m within a year of my big chop. Now that I’m settled on Nap85 hair brand- I’ve unsubscribed to all the other channels and sticking with CurlyC and one other for the education of the hair, which is the part I was missing. And Nap85 and Curly proverbs. All the gurus was doing too much and just confusing me. 🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
Thanks for sharing. I will say I stop using heavy butters, but I continue to use cream/oil. Also, I recommend using the Felicia Leatherwood brush with good leave in conditioner for detangling. Patience and proper techinque are essential to handling coily hair.
Omg thank you for this video. I was always wondering how I can re-moisturizer my hair through the week once I’ve already used leave in conditioner followed by grease on wash day ❤
I was dealing with hard water too. My hair was constantly dry, hard to absorb moisture and lacked shine due to mineral & calcium deposits coating my hair strands. I started using Ion Hard Water Shampoo from Sally's Beauty Supply a year ago and i haven't looked back. It is the best at removing & protecting hair from stubborn hard water buildup. I had so much buildup, I thought my hair was low porosity until I started using that shampoo, now I've discovered my hair is normal porosity and easy to moisturize. Give it a try, you won't be sorry.
I use Malibu c hard water shampoo. I don’t use it often, but it has helped. It doesn’t feel as stripping as other chelating shampoos, and my hair is surprisingly still manageable when using it.
Thank you so much Curly Chemistry! I love your videos...to answer your question I put together a DIY from a video I saw that included corn starch, egg yolk, essential oils and avocado that I left in my hair overnight and when I washed it out everything seemed fine but 1 week later I had a huge bald patch in the back of my head! I'm still not sure if this was protein overload or what?! I am now in the process of rebuilding my scalp and restimulating my hair follicles. Any advice you have is appreciated! Thanks in advance
My hair does better with formulations containing oil than with just straight oil after washing.(examples are Living Proof shine oil or no frizz oil) so strange because my hair LOVES coconut oil as a pre-poo.
Really grateful for your videos and insights. As a mum and someone who's historically struggled with MH, you take the hard work out of engaging in self-care. Thank you! Coconut oil did not work for me, chile. Buuut that was back in the day, I'm still scared to revisit lol. Can you please do a video on micro links?
I overdid the protein. It made my hair brittle and dry and I can't get rid of it. Also, notice almost all shampoos, conditioners have some form of protein in them. Can't escape from it.
I have seborrheic dermatitis, itchy scalp, postpartum hair loss and some baldness in my family. At this point I am just trying to find a routine that stops the itch so that my scalp can heal, and focus on my hair regrowing. In the meantime I’ve learned that coconut oil does not work for my hair or scalp AT ALL. Hoping for the day I can get back to healthy hair ✌🏾
I can relate, minus the postpartum part. I am not a Doctor, but as a person who has suffered from these skin conditions, I can tell you what has worked for me in hopes that maybe it could work for you too. I upped my vitamin D levels(both supplement & standing in the sun). I starting taking fish oil tablets and reduced my sugar intake. That helped me a lot. I've heard that cod liver only works very well too for these skin conditions as well. I hope this helps.
You should look into Beas bayou. The shampoo conditioner and scalp solution and scalp oil. Best thing for my scalp. I have had no more symptoms also wanna make sure you are washing 1-2x a week. No butters or grease on scalp just the scalp solution and scalp oil from Beas bayou. Also ketoconozale 2% shampoo in scalp only. In US you need a prescription for that one. Diet can also be a factor might want to reduce sugar intake and white rice breads and pastas which turn into sugars
I tend to use a co-wash if my wash and go doesn't turn out the way I want, and I don't need a strong shampoo. I also will use it after a clarifying shampoo to help with detangling.
I have seen the detox method do very for some hair. And others not so much, although they are deeply committed to that regime despite clearly negative results. (I ain't saying who). I am high porosity and live in twists. W n g. Are not my thing. (Tried it twice and will say i got the best results when using butter containg slippery elm and marshmallow root) I was cone free for years. But have started adding it back after experiencing its benefits.
I know this is random but, have you done a review on the original Mane ‘n Tail shampoo and conditioner? I haven’t seen any silicones in the ingredient list, but it leaves my baby’s curly hair hair sooooooo nice!
