Leading volleys with bottom edge of racket is a fantastic tip! Definitely made me more mindful of my tendency to smack high balls and trying to put topspin on low balls at the net

I took a one-day clinic with PTR Master Professional, Pete Collins years ago. One of his quotes was, "Great doubles players don't have great hands, they have great feet." And Mourataglou stresses using your legs when you volley. Your three-shelf illustration is right on.

The volley has been the second weakest part of game. And you're right, coaches always say stop swinging at the volley. Now, I really understand "what" they mean and how to correct it. I'm going to give it a try this afternoon, thanks! 🤓🎾

I coach our doubles teams at a local high school. Thanks for the tips. I agree on most except swinging through with underspin. I have the students shorten that stroke since the ball is coming at the net player with velocity already.

@@Playyourcourt What I also noticed was that after being in the split step position, Nate was shifting his weight back onto his right foot while lifting the left foot for a forehand volley. He would hit the ball and then step down with his left foot. I found this to be helpful also because footwork and weight transfer are very important in tennis. I will mimic this movement also.

Yes this is the tip I was looking for! I'm probably a high level 3.5 and this tip on good days brings me to a low level 4.0. Leading with the edge not only helps my volley but it also improved my overhead. Basically I think leading with the edge is a principle that can be incorporated to almost all strokes in tennis, wow! There may be times on slow balls that I just pancake my volley but this is a work in progress. Thank you!

This is truly a great video guys. These mistakes are even done with top pros when they are under stress, trying to catch up or overthinking at the wrong time. I remember saying this to myself when I was watchin D Thiem and Delpo in 2017 US quarters...Thiem was overhitting at the net sometimes, and just generally, overall when he was in trouble. Keep 'em coming guys, truly high-end videos!

@Playyourcourt
@Playyourcourt 2 года назад
Thanks Joann, glad to hear you're enjoying the content! The racket face remains unchanged throughout the drive volley in regards to the hand manipulating it at any point. The exception would be on a drop volley or a stab. It does operate on through several different planes however. It's best to think of the shoulders and hip hips working in unison on the volley. Hope the info helps!

I'm a slightly older player who learned the game back in the '50s/60's and was taught to step out (I'm a righty) with my left foot and punch the ball on a forehand volley and step with my rt. foot on a backhander. I just cannot break the habit in order to hit the "chop volley" that the modern players such as you hit with. What's the best way for me to correct this. On all of my other strokes, I've easily adapted to Oscar Wegner's MTM approach to the game, but due to loss of a couple of steps and innability to read where the ball with land after it clears the net, can no longer remain competetive in singles even though I've dropped down to playing B-level tournaments.
@Playyourcourt
@Playyourcourt 2 года назад
Hi Laurence, on the volley focus on distributing your weight to the foot that the ball is approaching. So for a righty recieving a forehand, you would step out with your right foot. Ultimately in order to find a counterbalnce the weight will distribute to the other foot forcing you to step into the ball with the correct foot but not allowing you to get too sideways, resulkting in the ball to get behind you. Hope this helps, thanks for watching!

if you use flexion ( like you do in the examples ) then your always leading with the edge . track the ball with the tip of the racket brings your racket on the right height . and your exemple of the heigh volley try to hit the ball at the same height please :):) the good example is 1m lower which brings your arm and racket in a different angle( its a little misleading )the height of the bad example everybody will try to play a smash movement

So it seems that you're coming under the ball at a slight angle to give the volley more "bite." A teaching pro thought I was more advanced than I was [boy, did he learn fast] and taught me this volley, but I soon lapsed to a very flat, soft volley. I have got to work on this. Thanks, guys.

I'm a 3.0, not a 3.5. Can you raise me to a 4.5? :) I have always used the continental grip on volleys, but have never been told about the leading edge concept. My volleys largely go either straight down or long, so I'm eager to work on this technique. Hey, maybe this will help me get closer to a 3.5 anyway, eh. But then, I'm 72 years old, so maybe major improvement isn't in the cards for an old guy.

Hello
@commondirtbagz7130
@commondirtbagz7130 3 года назад
I disagree with the continental grip. I have often used an eastern grip on my volley when I don’t have enough time. Grip has nothing to do with the volley, it’s the way you allow the ball to rebound of your strings. I have taught kids who sometimes use eastern on their volley and I don’t fix it as long as the motion is the same and the strings are facing.
@Playyourcourt
@Playyourcourt 3 года назад
Thanks for the feedback. We have content coming out next week we're discuss the variations of the continental grip and the eastern grip on the volley. I don't disagree that a variation of the eastern grip can be used on the volley but the grip does play a huge role in the volley. The ceiling is much lower on a players volley when it's performed with say a semi-western grip Vs. a continental grip. Thanks for watching, hope this helps clarify the instruction.
@commondirtbagz7130
@commondirtbagz7130 3 года назад
@@Playyourcourt okay yeah that does. And I mean yeah, I would never try and hit a volley with a semi western. I think even semi western grip users would try and switch to a bit more conservative of a grip.

Interesting, traditionally if you take the ball in the air, before it hits the ground it constitutes it being a volley. 😉 Please indulge us though 😊

@@Playyourcourt ok:) i just think there is a difference between slice and volley no matter when you hit it, you can hit top spin from the air and it wont make it for a volley would it? proper volley does not include any cut on the ball or moving a wrist

Waste my time. I don’t learn anything. You guys just talking too much and try to promote your business in a wrong way.
