are there other ways to melt snow if you dont have that gas thing
@WayPointSurvival
@WayPointSurvival 3 года назад
Yes, you can use a campfire, a gas grill, a charcoal grill, a stove top, you can even melt it in the back window of your car as long as it's not too cold outside. Of course, you would want it to be inside of a bowl or something lol! Edit: you can even pack it inside of a bottle and carried inside of your jacket and your body heat will gradually melt it as well.

If I don’t have any water available to start out I normally put snow in pot and put close to fire but not on the fire. This allows for snow to melt to give the water barrier to prevent scorching my pot. Good video.

Thanks James, instructional and clear as always Currently in Oklahoma our water is off but luckily there's more snow than you could drink or cook with outside. Just a few months ago we lost power for 2 weeks due to a freak early frost. The point is I'm so glad I got into camping/outdoor cooking/survival last year as it's made times when our utilities were lost much, much easier and make the small creature comforts possible. I'm boiling a pot of snow on my woodgas stove to make coffee right now.

Well the water barrier to prevent scorching the pot bottom was something I did not know. So 👍 thanks. BTW, I have plenty of coats for cold weather but I am liking the jacket. You should link to sell them for a percentage. 🤔

Thank you! The jacket is made by Kitanica in the USA. It is the Mark I with the liner. It's pricey but it's 1000 cordura nylon and very durable. It's a lifetime type of purchase.

Fun thing to do with kids. Using food coloring and sugar water (or a flavored syrup) make a snow cone. Cheats orange soda... Left over summer popcicle.. Lemon juice/sugar mixed... Be creative.

Great video! But maybe you should stress the importance of melted snow water has to BOIL for a minute (to kill bacteries) before drinking it. By the way, melting snow to get drinking water is SOP in The Norwegian Defence Forces, but your trick with starting with a little water in the melting pan is new to me :)
@WayPointSurvival
@WayPointSurvival 2 года назад
Actually, you only have to bring it to a boil and then let it cool back down. Pasteurization begins to take place at 149° f all the way up to 212 which is boiling and then back down to 149° and then cool enough to drink. You only have to pasteurize it for 6 minutes. So for water that is taken out of a pond, creek or the snow you really just have to pasteurize it not boil it for a minute. By the time it runs through that whole heat process you have definitely achieved your 6 minutes.
@Hoonozit
@Hoonozit 3 года назад
How long did that process take for the water to melt? Thanks for the video.
@WayPointSurvival
@WayPointSurvival 3 года назад
About 10 minutes. Thanks for watching and for your question!
@anto4us
@anto4us 5 месяцев назад
Is it not better boil it before drink it? And add minerals?
@WayPointSurvival
@WayPointSurvival 5 месяцев назад
Not necessarily. As long as it's a fresh snowfall and you're not in an area where there's a lot of air pollution. If you're just getting drinking water from it you don't really need to add minerals. Now if you were to do it long-term, that might make a difference.

When choosing what snow to melt make sure it's pure white any color other than pure white means snow is contaminated.

@johnforeman9776
@johnforeman9776 3 года назад
How long was the melting process?
@WayPointSurvival
@WayPointSurvival 3 года назад
About 10 minutes. Once you get the water heated at the bottom it goes more rapidly. After that, you just keep adding snow and dumping the water out as the pot fills up leaving some of the warmed water in the bottom to begin again. Thanks for asking!
