Unless you bring enough water with you. When hiking or camping. It is wise to be in close proximity of some type of water source. But a major problem may be that during a dry season or in the fall time. Those water sources maybe all dried up. And sometimes you may have to do a little hiking off trail to reach it.
Now when it comes to winter trekking or camping. There is a lot of hard work involved. Which can be challenging. But a huge plus or bonus is when it comes to collecting water. Well! It is all around you.
In this episode we are going to look at tips and tricks on melting snow. And also where to find the best snow. To make clean, crisp, and tasty drinking water.
MSR Whisper lite Stove ( amzn.to/49LPAfn )

Sgt. Scott, I enjoyed the camera work placing you at different scenic trails. Good work! Also, having that kneeling pad in the snow is a smart idea I'm gonna use. Lots of important info. I'm gonna try. Oorah Devil Dog!

I will collect water in the wintertime by drilling a hole through the ice. Streams and finding muskrat holes in the ice. But my son Zac, thinks melting snow taste the best. When of course there is no duff inside. Thank you John for watching. Have a happy Thanksgiving.

Isnt funny that there is more to a simple task like melting snow than you would think. Henry LOL. I loved the scene of your campsite from a distance with the warm glow of the fire. Beautiful.

That scene was last year. Between Christmas and New year with Runner. That was one of my favorite campsites of all time. Those are the kinds of sites you get when you bushwhack. You and your family. Have a Happy Thanksgiving, from Henry and I.

The MSR Heat Exchanger for your pot is a great addition to your winter camp kitchen. Faster boil with less fuel consumption. Just fasten it to the pot with heat exchanger bottom edge roughly a 1/2” below the bottom of the pot. It collects the heat from the stove and funnels it up the sides of the pot. Thanks for the great videos!!

Winter is coming. Those are some of the signs. The signs that I have seen. Is that there is a turkey in the icebox. Looks like I am going to do some gobbling tomorrow! God Bless.

Great topic with winter approaching! Melting snow for water is great. However, in PA we don’t get a lot of snow but when it does that’s my preferred method. And most of the time it doesn’t get extremely cold for long periods of time where water sources freeze for really long. So I also use a Steripen to sterilize water.

If your snow has snow fleas in it, you can filter the melted and boiled water using a paper towel or neckerchief

Your mention of using seed water is important. Don't make the same mistake I did. I didn't use seed water when melting snow with my titanium pot. The base of it got so hot it "permanently" popped and warped. Afterwards it wobbled when I set it down. Eventually I fixed it at home by heating the base on the kitchen stove and immediately cooling it down with a saturated frozen rag while pushing down on the warped part. After a few cycles of this, the warp went away and I had a flat base again. Now I use a large coffee tin to melt my snow and make sure there is no lining in it (like a soup can would). It's big and it's as light as titanium (or close to it) plus free. just need to make sure it's dry after each use as it will eventually rust out.

Great video. What material is the ground reflector made of? Is it something you bought at a store or did you make it yourself?
@AdventureswiththeMarine

Aluminum foil. It came with the stove. But you can easily make one out of a turkey pan that you buy in a department store. Thank you Malloryvidena for watching. I really appreciate it.

With all the pollution in the skies today (jets) setting up condensation nuclei, I wonder how much heavy metals, sulfur, and other stuff is in the melted snow. Would be a fun lab project. Do you ever filter the melted snow water?
@AdventureswiththeMarine
@AdventureswiththeMarine 7 месяцев назад
I never though of that before. I know acid rain effects the water in the BWCA. Where there is no motorize vehicles. Have a happy Thanksgiving.

@@AdventureswiththeMarine Yeah, citizen based pollution is hardly a consideration compared to 100,000 flights every 24 hours on average around the earth, and the artificial clouds they create constantly dimming the sun. Have a lovely Thanksgiving!

Should we add minerals? Becouse I heard that drink snow is not safe cuz its low level of minerals (like calcium, potassium etc)
