Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Ray Gomez Licks From 1977. I'll fully admit that this episode spawned from the inspiration after finding Ray's classic 1980 album 'Volume' yesterday at one of my favorite record stores, so while this episode wasn't originally planned, I'm stoked to finally feature Mr. Ray Gomez on my channel - so let's dive in!
While Ray may not be a household name, his music and the bands/artists he's worked with in his career are household names. This includes working with artists such as Stanley Clarke, Aretha Franklin, Roy Buchanan, Jack Bruce, Hall & Oates, and many more! So while Ray's name might not be familiar, I can assure you that his music is!
The ideas in this episode came from a live appearance in 1977 when Ray was working with bass legend Stanley Clarke, and the footage captures both of these marvelous players strutting their stuff like wild! The ideas shared here include a slick cascading melodic sequence idea, a melodic legato phrase, a wicked "crammed" legato phrase, a soulful blues-rock melodic bending idea, and much more!
Needless to say, if you're a Ray Gomez fan (or fan of Stanley Clarke), a jazz-rock or blues-rock guitarist, or maybe a player searching for some new ideas to stick in their bag of tricks - this episode is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

First heard Ray's playing on Narada Michael Walden's Garden Of Love Light LP. That record also features appearances by Jeff Beck and Carlos Santana. On that LP, Ray blows them both away. He is a beast, and an all-time great strat tone to boot.

Garden of Lovelight is my desert island " must have ". Still, to this day , is my favourite album of all time. Just edging out Donny Hathaway's , Extensions of a man .

_"Art doesn't have an expiration date."_ I'll be repeating that quote if you don't mind. Is it one of your own? That's almost as good as _"Music is a communication, not a competition."_ Witch is probably my favorite.

which witch hehe anyway, i thought about art and how it always is a reflection of the times in which it was created. look at any art and you can put a date on it, thus no matter how great it is, will become `dated` at some point. its hard if not impossible to make art that is timeless. art mimicks life and life evolves so you can never get around it. no worries though. we have the idea of nostalgia which is a realization of time passing. @@quantumbuddhist

He did a GREAT instructional video with 4 smoking instrumentals! Never heard/seen him play better! Tom Kolb from a guitar mag I can't remember (probably Guitar World or GFTPM. Can't remember) did the interviewing. Lots of Gomez techniques discussed. It's a MUST for any Ray fan! I have the VHS & converted it to DVD. I've just moved so that stuff is packed away. You should be able to find it with a little research. Good luck! You just may have to do RG Pt. II. You'll appreciate the resemblance to Austin Powers! Lol
