Do you know the 3 reasons why you cannot lift your arms? Do you know how to improve your range of motion? One of the most common problems I see as people get older is the inability to raise their arms over their heads. Many struggle to lift their arms straight out in front of their bodies, others cannot lift their arms out to the side, and finally, hardly any of them would even think of lifting their arms over their heads!
Most healthcare practitioners are trained to stop your pain, not find the cause of your pain and that can lead to a chronic situation for you. At The Muscle Repair Shop, we look for the true cause of your pain, then teach you how to keep it away for years to come.

Great information and I loved the idea of putting the ball in a sock. Your discussion around allowing the brain to help the muscle relax. This will sound a bit woo-woo but when I find pain spots I remind my body (and all it's cells, energy etc.) that it has the power to heal itself and I'll try to stay out of the way. Helps remind me to focus on breathing. Thanks again. New subscriber.

This video has really helped me!! I had been doing simple work outs for a while but after straining my arm it stayed in contraction along the scapula. I was unable to lift my arm for over 1 month . I moved it passively to keep the range of motion but to painful to put it in active flexion without pain.I was looking for a PT to help me out I could identify my fleeting trigger points but was unable to work with them.... The simple use of the sock and the technique did the job. I got 85 % of the movement back in 1 day...cool ! Looking forward to full recovery and getting my strength back ...Thanks so much.

SOrry for the delayed response. Most of us have been trained to force our muscles to do things and we may get impatient, however, knowing that the muscles are more emotional than physical, forcing them to do anything is working against the brain and you wind up sore. As a trigger point therapist I personally is a lacrosse ball and yes I’ve been doing these things for years. This guy is spot on on what he says so learn from him all you can. No medical doctor knows anything about these things so don’t waste your time going to them unless you have a muscle tear and need surgery to repair it. I had to have my rotator cuff repaired by surgery and after one year of physical therapy to get my range of motion back and get over the pain I swore I would never go through that again with my other arm. So far it’s been 18 years and I have kept my promise.

Thanks for this information as it's one of the best guidance videos I've seen. I have shoulder pain and my physiotherapist is saying I have tightness to these areas. I'm using a spikey ball on my back against the wall.
@TheMuscleRepairShop
@TheMuscleRepairShop 11 месяцев назад
I am glad you like the video.I prefer a tennis ball to the spikey ball because the ball should not be used for pressure. Too many times therapists have been trained to apply too much pressure onto the muscles thinking the pressure will make the muscle release. The truth is, the more pressure you apply, the more the brain feels the pain causing the brain to contract the muscle. This is the opposite effect you want. Once you understand how the brain controls the muscle, the need to work so hard by applying a lot of pressure to the muscle seems a little silly. When using any ball, don't roll around on the ball against the wall, use the ball to test each spot at a time on the back of your shoulder and upper back. Don;t forget to use your hands on the chest, especailly the outside of the chest as these muscles will caues your shoulders to round and cause pain to be felt on the back of the shoulder. Hope this helps.

@@TheMuscleRepairShop I have subscribed, thanks. You are 100 percent. My physiotherapist has stated I have tightness in my upper back and chest area. When she was working on these areas I could feel the intense pain in my left shoulder. I'm getting places regarding your arm lift exercises against the door frame. I can't do 3 sets of 10 due to the pain but will hopefully build up to 3 sets. I can feel the tightness in my chest when I do this exercise. I will swap the spikey ball for a tennis ball. Trying to avoid surgery as I have had this for 4 months.
@TheMuscleRepairShop
@TheMuscleRepairShop 11 месяцев назад
Just do one set of 10 and build up. At this point your brain is aniticapting pain and will contract the muscles to prevent the pain from occuring. When stretching correctly you are relasing the tension in the muscle created by the brain. As you begin the stretch get out of your head and into your body. Feel the muslce beginning to release. Asa you do, breathe and allow your brain to see it is safe to move. Each time you move the arm, your brain will feel safe in the previous movement and then allow the arm to lift higher. It will take a few days, but before you know it your arm will rise again without pain. I have done this with frozen shoulders with great success. Always remember when strteching. You are releasing the tension, not pulling the muscle to make it longer as it is attached on both ends.@@equinoxeparabellum6776

These has been my problem for over 7 months now. Many sessions of chiropractor, physiotherapy & acupuncture give me no release. Some say it's my badminton sport injury, some say my wrong working position with the mouse, some say it's my arthritis getting worse.
@TheMuscleRepairShop
@TheMuscleRepairShop Год назад
It could all of the above. The most common cause of your arm has to do with the outside chest muscle, Pectoralis Minor. Anytime you lift your arm, the outside chest muscle must release before the arm can raise. When the outside chest muscle is too tight from use, or non-use, paiun can occur on the backside of the shoulder or down the arm. Try the Pec minor stretch, but begin easy and try not to force the stretch. Remember, you have been suffering from this for a while, so the brain will anticipate pain and contract the outside chest muscle just in case the pain may happen. The goal here is to allow the brain to see with small movements that it is safe to move the arm. This is the reason for repeating the stretch 10 times. Hope this helps.

@@lobilly Hey Billy, you can still play badminton. Keep in mind that if the outside chest muscle is causing your pain, it will tighten up. Stretching it daily up to 2-3 times per day will reduce the tightness and hopefully stop the pain.

Mr. Phelps, thanks for the great video. I'm 77 and quite healthy. Six months ago I had a complete shoulder replacement and then I did about 5 months of physical therapy. I still can't raise my right arm higher than the level of my shoulder. My surgeon has not identified any reason for that. However I have noticed that when I start to raise my right arm, my shoulder joint moves up (as if I was trying to move my shoulder joint towards my ear---but I'm not trying to do that--it just happens now.) And I'm having some pain in the deltoid area as you mentioned. My left shoulder and arm are fine and when I lift my left arm my left shoulder joint remains in place and I can raise my arm high. My husband noticed that if he raises his shoulder joint towards his ear, then it's difficult to move the arm higher than shoulder level--and otherwise he can lift his arms high. Do you have any thoughts on what is causing my shoulder joint to move up abnormally when I start lifting my right arm, and what I should do to correct the issue? Thanks!
@TheMuscleRepairShop
@TheMuscleRepairShop 8 месяцев назад
What I have seen with people dealing with similar issues is, they are using the muscles on top of the shoulder to lift their arm. I think it is out of fear of pain they do that, not sure. Anyway, try massaging the outside chest muscle like in the video on raising your arm and gently try lifting the arm without using the top of the shoudler to lift it. Next try the tennis ball massage on the backside to soften the muscles on the back of the shoulder and midback. That is where I would begin. As always though, be gentle with yourself as you may be dealing with some fear of injuring the shoulder.

On the shoudler balde there are three muscles that can become tight from tight outside chest muscles. BAd posture can create this pain. I also have gastrointestinal problems and those make my neck get stiff sometimes. Like a shoulder pressure. Thank you!
@TheMuscleRepairShop
@TheMuscleRepairShop 5 месяцев назад
Sorry to hear that.When you say you cannot raise your arm and reach for the middle of your back, many times the outside chest muscle can be tight. If this is the case, lifting your arm requires this outside chest muscle, pectoralis minor, to release which allows you to lift your arm. Check out my videos on chest stretching, some are in videos on mid nack tioghtness and neck issues. Sleeping on your left side isn't entirely a bad thing except if you do not stretch the outside chest and do the tennis ball massage on the shoulder blade and mid back, the muscles can tighten which will restict shoudler movement. Beleive or not, I have seen people with stomach issues and they sometimes contract their abdominal muscles to try and relieve the discomfort. This can lead to shoudlers rounding and head forward posture. Take a look at my videos on neck and shoudler issues for more help. Hope this helps. if you have any more questions you are welcome to reply back.

@TheMuscleRepairShop
@TheMuscleRepairShop 8 месяцев назад
Many times when you hurt your shoulder when lifting, it is the outside chest muscles. WHen lifting heavy objects, the chest plays a rolle in holding that object. When you try to lift your arm, the outside chest muscle prevents the arm from lefting and can cause pain shooting down the arm from the neck. The muscles that lift the arm attach at the neck and run out to the end of the shoulder.

I have rt shoulder impingement and is very .painful. I can raise my arm over my head , but cannot reach around to my mid back. My arm just stays at my side. Been going for PT , but pain still very painful and under my shoulder blade I have excruciating pain that is so tender and hard to touch. It even radiates from neck to mid spine. Are there any exercises you could suggest? I’ve tried the tennis balls , but no relief. I will try again your way. Thank you! Great video!!

WHen you said reaching around to my mid back, I am assuming youa re lifting your hand up your back to the mid back area, right? If that is the case then the muscle under the shoulder blade may too tight. AS you lift your hand, have someone else see if you shoulder balde pope up a little, about an inch. If that is true, then your subscapularis may be tight. Let me know if I am on the right track and if so, I can share a stretch that may help.

@@TheMuscleRepairShop thanks for your reply! Yes, I can’t turn my rt arm around to reach up to my mid back . I had a frozen shoulder over 30 yrs ago , but don’t know if that could be a cause . I honestly don’t think so. Under the scapula, is the real painful spot. It’s very tender and hard to touch. Sometimes, exercise makes it feel worse. I’ve had trigger point injections, but no relief. Right now , I’m trying to concentrate on the ROM to my rt. Shoulder. But, at this point have been set back 3 weeks due to flu, and even pulled my lower back from violently coughing. I can’t stand, sit, lie down or dress it’s extremely painful almost 2weeks now. Thank you for listening!

@@jdv7118 Ok, try laying face down on your bed or floor. Place your right hand on the small of your back or as high as you can get. Place a pillow under your right elbow for support. AS you lay there, allow the elbow to relax and drop the arm onto the pillow. Breathe out as you relax and let the arm rest there for no more than 10 seconds. Straighten the arm for a few seconds, then repeat. I would do this up to ten times. You may not be able to do it ten times at first but you can build up to it. Let me know how that works for you.

Many times with a frozen shoulder, the subscapularis muscles which is under the shoudler blade tightens and prevents the shoulder from rotating as you lift your arm. The outside chest muscle, pectorlais minor, can tighten to prevent the arm from lifting. Finally the rhomboids, muscles between the shoudler blade and spine can tighten and prevent the arm from raising. Any or all of these can affect the arm from lifting. If left untreated it can lead to bulging discs in the neck, bones spurs, and degenrative disc disease. Using the tennis ball massage to soften the back muscles, your hands to soften the chest muscles, and then stretching as described in the video can help to release the shoulder.

Will this work for frozen shoulder?
@TheMuscleRepairShop
@TheMuscleRepairShop 8 месяцев назад
That is a great question. Sometimes it will, however frozen shoulder mostly deals with the subscpaularis muscle under the shoulder blade. If this is the case then no these exercises will not help in the beginning. To free the sub scalularis muscles under the shoulder, try lying face down, place the hand of the affected shoulder as hihg up on your back s possible, place a pillow under the elbow of the hand on your back. Now slowly breathe out and allow the elbow to relax and lay on the pillow. Do this several times a day, 3-5repa. What you may find is the more comfortable you get in this position, the more the brain relaxes the muscle to release the shoulder blade. For context, when you place your hand on your lower back and relax the elbow, the shoulder blade should pop up about 1-2 inches off the ribcage. This will allow the arm to raise without pain. Hope this helps.

@@TheMuscleRepairShop Thank you so much. The doctor here in India diagnosed it as frozen shoulder and prescribed painkillers. When I asked for tests to be done, he shrugged it off. Medicine didn't work and I stopped taking them. I never went back to the doctor after that as I felt it was a hopeless case. The excrutiating pain continued for 7 months but has decreased significantly and am able to sleep a lot better now. I will definitely try this method you have suggested. Hopefully I will be able to lift my arm all the way. Once again, thank you!😊🙏❤❤❤

What about knee osteoarthritis.4.07 pm
@TheMuscleRepairShop
@TheMuscleRepairShop 8 месяцев назад
@@alexchan2251 Good question! I think of osteoarthritis as rust of the bones. The tightness of muscles can help create damage to the bones because you lose the synovial fluid in the joint due to the tightness. Over time osteoarthritis can happen. I would contonie to stretch correctly, but look at your diet and take out foods that increase inflammation in the body, includign joints. Movement helps the body to prosuce more synovial fluid. It is difficult to get rid of osteoaerthritis when it is bad, however, if you improve your movment. flexibility, and diet you can slow the process down and hopefully reduce the pain.

I have seen this a few times. There are two things to keep in mind. One, the psychological affect meaning the brain is afraid of the pain and will not allow you to lift your arm.You can overcome this but you must work slowly to allow the brain to see it is safe to move this way. Secondly, the physical side, meaning the actual movement of the muscles. When a rotating muscle is torn it is one of several different muscles that allow the arm to rotate. You have other muscles that can help with the movement. By doing the outside chest muscle this can free up the front of the shoulder and doing the tennis ball massage on the backside can help free up the muscles on the backside. This will allow the muscles on top of the shoulder to lift the arm without limitations. You can see other videos that teach you the outside chest stretch and tennis ball massage. Other shoulder videos will sho the stretches for lifting your arm forward and backwards. Do all of these slowly and take your time as it will take some time to improve.

If the pain is in the shoulder JOINT itself, think about how often you eat fish. Before spending a ton of money on doctors ,go buy a cod liver oil suppliment. A GOOD ONE. I use Carlsons at the health food stores. It may get rid of your pain in hours. But also,,,, fish oil keeps the body`s ability of absorbing calcium low, ,so it`s good to only take fish oil about once a week.

A cervical injury can creat the same symptoms
@TheMuscleRepairShop
@TheMuscleRepairShop 8 месяцев назад
That is true. Once you have pain in any part of your body, the brain will tighten the muscles around the painful area to prevent the pain from happening. This can cause the pain to increase. The key to most injuries is knowing what caused it. Usually a disc doesn't bulge or herniated without a trauma or tight muscles around the area. Once a disc is damaged we know how to repair it, but what if we could see the damage before it occurred? Maybe we could prevent many injuries before they ever start.

That is true, however by allowing the brain to release the tension in the shoulder can improve pain levels. Once you have a trauma, the brain contracts the muscle anytime there is movement that may cause pain. This is called anticipation of pain.

@@Futo653 Here is something you might not have realized. Sitting in a recliner can cause the otuside chest muscles to tighten which allow the shoulders to round in. When lying flat, the outside chest muscles need to release and allow the shoulders to lie flat. If the shoudlers cannot lie flat, it can cause pain in the shoulders when lying flat. The outside chest muscles are aprt of the rotator cuff.
