@@periodt4651 Oh my gosh... did u atleast test drive other vehicles? I mean Yukon is bigger than highlander and pilot. but im not sure about the reliability and durability of Gmc's...
Seiko Watch what was wrong with the Honda Pilot? My ex had one and that was a champ but then again it was a first gen I currently have the Ford Explorer not too bad so farb
Bro my 2014 Honda Pilot got 191,000 miles we been everywhere you can imagine in the USA and Canada and Mexico no problem not even the transmission . The only thing i do its its regular maintains like brake pads oil transmission oil no problems very good suv but some parts need work on for honda even in the newer models
That smart mirror on the toyota is almost enough to sell the vehicle by itself. What a great concept. No more worrying about whether you can see past all of the passengers or the children or the car seats etc.
I test drove both the 3rd row in Highlander is useless and the cargo capacity behind the 3 row in Highlander is a joke compared to pilot I don’t know how it got same numbers. I’m a Toyota guy for life but from reality point of real life test I found Pilot a lot more spacious and family friendly
Good review. I might quibble over some points awarded here and there but the overall result is what I'd expect. There's no question that the Pilot needs an update to stay competitive in the segment. On one point, though, the Honda is definitely superior. Despite lengthening the Highlander by almost 3 inches, the third row is still a torture chamber suitable only for tiny children or bound and gagged hostages. Its 27.7" of legroom is 4" (!) less than the KIA Sorento, a three row crossover that's half a foot shorter! In fact, the Highlander has 139 cubic ft of total passenger room compared tp the Pilot's 152 cf. Finally, while the Highlander has definitely improved compared to the last generation the entire category has been affected by the availability of the Telluride and Palisade. Each is a far better midsize three row crossover.
My cousin has a pilot and I have a highlander. If you live in the city, and have kids, go with pilot! If you live in the suburbs or country and have older kids, get the Highlander.
Haha, a buddy of mine w some insight into Japanese automobiles always said that Honda wants to provide a feel for the road while Toyota wants to dampen the road. I like the feel of the Accords and Pilot that I’ve owned. There’s a crispness to the driving experience. Never really driven a Toyota. Don’t care for their styling. 🤷♂️
I have a 2016 Pilot Elite and checked out the new Highlander. I wanted to love it but the 3rd is still too small which is a dealbreaker. Really need to award more points to the Pilot for that as that is the whole purpose of a 3 row SUV. Plus the Pilot makes way better use of space with 12 cup holders in the 2nd and 3rd rows and 4 cup holders in the front. The flat center console is great storage as well. If you have kids, you know what I'm talking about. The Highlander shelf is a joke and can't hold a drink can it?
Aaron H ....LOL. You’ll be bitting your tongue in the next few months. That transmission needs extra attention. Honda is rushing to keep up with Toyota and they continue to miss the mark. The Toyota Highlander is a work horse. The pilot is just a pretty prancing pony.
The pilot third row is definitely excellent. We drove one when we were looking at our family vehicle. Intimately decided on the highlander because it was quite a bit cheaper, but that pilot was extremely nice. In reality though I feel like in terms of class the pilot is more comparable to the sequoia, no? It certainly felt that way in terms of price and size.
The blacked out Pilot looks dated (not to mention impossible to keep clean). I do find it disapointing that both use harsh riding 20" wheels. The Highlander requires a ridiculous "subscription" for navigation. Both have poor 3rd row seating room. My next choice will be for the Honda Ridgeline.
I owned mostly toyotas in my whole life. v6 camry se, 4cl camry, toyota rav 4 and sienna sport.I resaly wanted to stay with toyota buy i dont really feel the latest gen of highlander. i end up getting the honda pilot black edition which feels more premium in my opinion!
I think u can't go wrong with either of them. I have 2016 EX-L pilot and I put around 43K miles with few long family trips and it still running like day 1 since I took out from the dealer. I remember when I bought it, I actually wanted the Highlander because I had a Toyota RAV4 and I wanted to maintain the reliability but the dealer didn't sell it in my country so I went with the Pilot because in 2016 it was even better than the Highlander with the amenities it offered specially with large cabin, easy access to 3rd row seat and sufficient cargo space with 3 seats are up.
It would be really interesting to compare minivans and three row crossovers, like the Pacifica to the Atlas or Traverse, The Sedona to the Telluride or Palisade, the Odyssey to the Pilot, or the Sienna to the Highlander.
Men, don't let the little lady pick out the SUV! Men, don't let mama castrate you when it comes to get a real man's SUV! The Honda Pilot is mama's SUV! LOL! Mama upgraded from the minivan to the Highlander or Pilot; however, they are not a real man's SUV! First, let's look at the horsepower. They both have less than 300hp! Really! Something that weighs that much with less than 300hp loaded with the family trying to pass on the highway in the fast lane! LMAO! Secondly, let's look at the towing capacity. 5,000lbs! that's all!?! Again, if a person has the whole family in the those SUV's and towing a boat decides to get in the fast lane on the highway to pass a vehicle. OMG! Talking about major disappointment and stuck with keeping that slow vehicle until it gets paid off! Mama aint thinking about a SUV towing abilities, just like a man isn't thinking about what type of make-up women should buy! Men, don't let the little lady talk you into buying these feminize girlie SUV's! LMAO! I've seen to many men become disappointed from the lack of manly capabilities of these SUV's! A Real will buy a Durango RT/SRT/Hellcat! The RT has 370hp. and 7400lbs towing. The SRT 485hp and 8900lbs towing! The Durango Hellcat, 710hp.! Now, I don't want to hear any panzies out the crying about the fuel effeciency or quality of build because the Highlander and Pilot have issues just like any vehicle, Einstein! LMAO! Now, feel your crotch and make sure you still have a pair and next time buy a real man's SUV!
Recalls coming on the Toyota in April. Watch Scotty Kilmers video. I have a 2016 Toyota Tundra and love it. I love Toyota’s. However after I drove the Highlander and the Pilot both the fully loaded options. I ended up buying the 2020 Honda Pilot Elite. Rode better and the seats didn’t feel cheap like the Highlander. The technology in Highlander is behind the times as well. There is a blue ray player for the rear passengers in the pilot as well. Comes in handy for road trips. Both are exceptional vehicles was just my preference
mct8888 they had a problem with there cooling tubs/containers when they were casting the engine blocks. Therefore some of them came out cracked or didn’t cast correctly causing leaks, and or compression failure. Go to Scotty Kilmers channel watch his videos.
Daniel Hernandez I did my own research. Had cash bought what I thought to be the best value after looking for over a year. And Scotty is pretty good at what he does. Wasn’t saying his word is bond. Just sayin..... from my own opinion what I bought from what I own and have test driven. Take it for what it is
mct8888 I did not personally I just read about it. I have owned Toyota’s my whole life. My Tundra is one of my favorite vehicles I bought it brand new in 2016. Never an issue with it. I ended up buying a 2020 Honda Pilot Elite after test driving and looking for over a years time.
I just purchased a 2021 hybrid. Picking it up tomorrow. I see myself keeping this car for the full duration of the 10 year battery warranty or more. There really isn't anything much I could want more of a car. Perhaps a self-driving/taxi capability... but that won't be ready before a very long time on these models and at affordable prices.
This highlander makes the Lexus rx450 sport look like a Honda Toyota really stepped it up, I know I know this is silly but! There’s only 2 things I wish they had done to it, first leave the rear window to open and close like the model before it’s a great super handy feature, second there so much room there they really should have made the rims an inch bigger that body would have look even more aggressive with a tad larger rims
We have a 2020 pilot ex and its good but the highlander has way more visibility and its more reliable so the highlander wins, but pilot is still really good
Agreed, as well as the interior. I sat in one and was blown away. Then went and checked out the Honda, was not impressed at all. The interior is plain and pedestrian, but the exterior on the Pilot is hideous. It's a shame because I think the Pilot has a little more useful room in the back with all seats folded down, which is more what I need. Will test drive both next week, but at this point I am totally in love with the Highlander
Pilot - Space, AWD system, iVTEC. Highlander - Interior material and design, camera . Front of the Highlander looks bland and the side body line is hideous imo. The Pilot is showing its age and next year should be the last of this design.
Play Doh this pilot was lackluster from its debut. Mediocre at best, and the optional transmission is a sore point. My favorite pilot was the first gen. The second one was cheap. And this one is unappealing on so many levels.
It is gonna have a redesign this is probably the last year of this generation because they redesign every 5 years and refresh ever 3 years and this design was first released in 2016 so 2019 is already on its refresh and 2020 is on its second year of the refresh so probably 2021 the pilot will be redesigned let’s hope so
As much as I like the current look of The Pilot, it needs a redesign. I'm disappointed with the look of the current redesigned Highlander. I preferred the look of last gens Highlander more.
I hate, hate, hate the shifting buttons on the Pilot. I’d be afraid I’d spill something into them, or worse, accidentally push it while driving and screw up the transmission. Give me the stick shifter. I also love the heads up display on the Highlander.
No. This is a 2020 Pilot compared to a 2020 Highlander. It shows that Honda needs to redesign the Pilot. Just because the generation is older does not mean there is an excuse!
We had a 2019 Highlander SE and didn’t like it at all. The seats were extremely hard and it was unbelievably dated interior-wise. The touchscreen display was low-resolution and the backup camera quality was poor. The mirrors were too large and mounted to highly, making for poor visibility. The Highlander’s low seating position didn’t make matters better, either. The headlights were slightly better than the RAV4’s, but that doesn’t say much. To add to our frustration with the vehicle, our car was covered under the massive fuel pump recall, which doesn’t speak highly, considering how reliable people claim a Toyota is. Long story short, we traded on a Pilot Black Edition about a month and a half ago and love it. So comfortable! Would do it again in a heartbeat! We will never EVER purchase another Toyota again!
Boys, I always think you're holding a small dog in your lap..........it's your mic cover! Think y'all should go ahead and name it. Maybe "Buffy"? Since she does buffer the sound. Hilarious!! I hope she's potty trained!!
And the space on 3rd row. Everything else, it's better. I probably like more the exterior look of the Pilot, but Highlander interior is much better. I took a highlander in the end, kids are still young, so that smaller third row is not a problem yet lol.
I think I was hit with sticker shock lol. Starting at $48k. Damn lol. We just bought a 2015 highlander with 35k miles on the odo for $22,000. I will say that I am rather jealous of the (extremely late to the party) addition of CarPlay and android auto, but that's nothing a head unit swap won't fix. Maybe in five years we will upgrade to the 2020 and save a boatload of cash 😆
I really don't like what Toyota did with the center shelf. We have the '18 Highlander XLE and find that shelf is so convenient for charging phones, holding masks, and other essentials. The '20 has a split shelf which is inconvenient to use. I know they wanted to roll out a new generation, but this one doesn't do it for me. I will probably look for a '19 with low miles.
The Highlander was the winner before you even started. The pilot was an automatic looser due to the push button transmission. Any vehicle with push button and or dial transmissions will not be purchased by me. Good job, I love watching your videos.
I have a 2019 highlander which I thought I'd keep for at least 10 years.. but the new models are VERY nice looking.; just very pricey vehicles. Idk I may refinance.
These 2 are different vehicles. The highlander is really a 5 seater with extra 2 for kids the pilot can seat 8 average size adults. They may be called mid size SUV but the uses are different.
The Pilot has more room and comfort but definitely the Highlander is the winner... ( I sell cars... 25 units per month and always I have complaints with Pilots with transmission ). Now Im looking a personal vehicle and Im buying the Highlander. Thank you for this video!!
I bought a 2020 pilot exl with nav and res but stayed away from the touring ,black edition, and elite model do to the 9spd trans and stayed with the traditional 6spd in the exl model.and on both cars upper models have the dreaded autostart stop omg hate that sorry but doesn't save gas. I think of the starter when it's kicking on and off .and highlander 3rd row was a joke .my 8 year old daughter couldn't fit or me and I'm 6'4 ,but I fit in the pilot 3rd row .and the headroom wasn't good in the highlander but great in pilot.
Let us know how you like it in 5 years. Not sure I'm ready to trust a Kia past that. And I'm absolutely positive I can trust a Toyota and Honda WELL beyond five years. However, I would like to see the old adage, "You get what you pay for" to be proven wrong.
Toyota all day. Financed a new 2017 Toyota Highlander SE AWD in November 2017 for $41,000 after taxes and licensing. Wife was in an accident where the other driver merged into her coming off the freeway. Everyone was fine with minimal damage thanks to the Toyota safety features. Our insurance totalled our vehicle approximately 2 weeks prior to this comment, and paid us out $35,000. I owed $21,000. Nice check. The depreciation of the vehicle overall in the approximate 3 years i drove it was only $6,000 with approximately 50,000 miles. We just financed another 2020 Toyota Highlander Limited AWD, and am extremely pleased with this make offer that whole ordeal. Live by Toyota, die by Toyota, or live long enough to get safer by Toyota Satey Sense.
Thanks for your time and details. Doesnt the Pilots Rear storage comartment cover have an option to be removed and placed in the lower part of the storage comartment providing more storage space? Plus it can be flipped over for carper option on one side and weather protect on the other side?
I have a new Highlander and i drove my cousins new Pilot, my Highlander is definitely smoother and faster! Everyone dings the Highlanders 3rd row but its not as bad as people make it be. What NO reviewer does is recline the 3rd row all the way, it makes it feel much more comfy that way should an adult need to sit there!
@@RedmanLS3 they are standard SUVs, who cares about speed there?!?! I have a GR Supra, I don't need to be racing SUVs and acting like an idiot. Before you start, the SRT and SRT8 Durangos and Trailhawk Jeeps are NOT your ordinary SUV, those were designed with racing in mind, the Pilot and Highlander were NOT! 🙄🙄
Honda Pilot is better and more advanced than the Highlander. Of course the redesigned highlander won this comparison but that’s because it’s being compared to Honda Pilot that isn’t going to be redesigned until fall 2021 and I can bet that it’ll beat the Highlander.
At one point me and my mom were debating on whether we get the Highlander or Acura MDX which is similar to the pilot in some ways while still in the three row crossover segment the mdx still stays in the luxury bracket at first I wanted the mdx but my mom wasn’t really a fan of the design so I went back and forth with her about the mdx with safety, tech, value and after all that went into place we thought about getting an mdx technology because an advance would’ve cost around 57,000 dollars even though we thought about it in the end she still told me she wanted the Highlander so I decided to give it a try and was very impressed we talked about trim levels she said she wanted an xle I went with it because the xle came with safety features tech and value but at one point I stopped liking the Highlander until I realized it was shaped like a station wagon so after that my mom,dad and I were just talking when I started talking about Christmas telling my dad moms wants a Highlander I said if we get one can it be a 2019 Highlander limited because I liked the design of that one more until my mom finally pointed out that she doesn’t like used until I started getting tired of looking at the 2019 so I came back around to the design of the 2020 Highlander and realize I’ll give it a second chance now tomorrow we will be picking up our brand new 2020 Toyota Highlander platinum in ruby flare pearl from our local Toyota dealer thank you for the comparison car confections
I've owned 2 Toyotas, 1 Lexus and 5 Hondas. NO COMPARISON in quality or responsiveness of service staffs. LOVE Toyota styling. Think quality/service sucks
3rd row seats are pretty much useless for passengers in Highlander, Pilot has a bit more room in the back, Highlander wins in technology and interior design. Tough choice.
Highlander has everything but dont know why Toyota didn't add that extra 1.5 inch in 3rd row leg space. Seems thats the only reason Pilot is getting sold otherwise that lad is way outdated in exterior.
@@FullsendOffroad Well they had issues wit the highlander transmission. Same that is in the Rav4. I think it was a software fix, but who knows if that fixed it or not. Time will tell!

@@jeangarcia110 disagree, kia are not more reliable than highlander and are not smoother and quieter than the lexus-like highlander. The only thing is the warranty, but than you won't need it in the highlander, you also get free maintenance for 2 years which is awesome value. Also Kia has bad resale value, so you will pay nearly $50k for the kia and it will lose that like butter. So in a sense no value whatsoever.
I looked at the palisade...the steering wheel felt like super cheap plastic...I ended up getting a 2019 higlander and prefer it much more. 2020 model turned me off.
Palisade and Telluride may look like they have high end material but thats not the case they will wear out quickly over time..You can tell they won't last long...highlander has much better material and mechanical quality
