If you're looking for a budget friendly 3 row SUV, the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander might be what you want. It offers quite a few features for the price including some things that I really didn't expect like a multi view camera, 3rd row, and power folding mirrors. There are also things this 2018 Outlander disappointed me with. Primarily the handling and powertrain was underwhelming. The good news is you can replace the 2.4 4 cylinder with the 3.0 V6. Overall, it has ups and downs, but struggles to compete with rivals in it's class. What did you think?

Yeah its awesome since the up & down option headlights are mostly found in the high-end luxury cars. I really hope Mitsubishi pays more attention to the quality and reliability of their products. Their Montero (known as Pajero in other markets) is the best selling SUV in Arabian Gulf and South East Asian countries and is known for its reliability and luxury options but the models available in North America are mostly dull and have little after market value

Finally Mitsubishi is back in the crossover market which they had long lost to the Koreans. This Outlander is a stylish surprise with the 3rd seat option and it is a good alternative to the plethora of Escapes, CRVs, RAV4s, Rogues, Renegades etc. Unfortunately they are still not marketing their products as much as the Koreans do while poor build quality, lack of options and production lines outside the US are all contributing against Mitsubishi's market presence in the highly competitive US car market. Overall a very detailed and beautiful review of the handsome Outlander

I've noticed reviewers generally use MSRP, but that can be misleading. This vehicle in particular looks like it has some pretty big discounts that likely make it more competitive on a real world basis. I think sometimes that's worth noting.
@PrimeAutotainment
@PrimeAutotainment 6 лет назад
You’re right, for sure. I’ve thought about not talking about price, talking about current market...but don’t want the prices to be variable per vehicle so I just say the price listed. Discounts are plentiful though...and it would vary so much in different regions/dealers too but good points.

I understand why some people would want more power and I believe that with the V6 it should be sufficient. That being said I had a chance to drive the non-3rd row Outlander 2016 with the 2.4L with an automatic 6 speed and it was a blast! I know that the newer Outlanders only come in the larger 3rd row size and may be a little heavier making the 4-cylinder seem underpowered, but we have to take into consideration that Mitsubishi has limited market space, and so the fact that we see so much more popularity in the 2.4L version is because people are generally more interested in a more fuel efficient commuting car. If Mitsubishi were to be more successful then we may see more V6 and potential for V8 if the full sized Pajeros/Monteros start getting imported to USA again, along with the potential for a real Eclipse sports car. But for now the Outlander is designed as an SUV/wagon that is also trying to meet fuel efficiency standards desired by the majority of the people buying them, so expect to be drowned in a sea of 4-cylinders for the near future.

Great in-depth review. It looks like an entry level 3rd saw SUV with minimum options and tech. 166 hp for a 3rd row SUV doesn't seem working well. I would go with Toyota Highlander as it has 310 hp and its hybrid version gets you 30/28 mpg.

You can adjust the driver's seat electrically
@iatsd
@iatsd 6 лет назад
The "key holder" is for charging the key fob. You'll need to start doing that after ~1 year of using the fob. A 2-3 hour charge while driving will keep it going for another ~6 months. If you're only getting 24 mpg in highway driving then you've got a lead foot. I could get 28 mpg without paying much attention; learn to drive a CVT properly. You also completely missed the fact the rear seats move forward and back - unusual for the class and a surprisingly useful feature. With the discounts combined with the warranty, and compared to woeful (build & drive quality of) things like the Escape, RAV4, or Terrain, it's a very compelling option.
@PrimeAutotainment
@PrimeAutotainment 6 лет назад
iatsd that’s neat to learn the purpose of the key fob charger. Thanks for that! Good point on the seats and I apologize for that. The sliding function definitely is nice to have and leg room was great. As for MPGs...in other vehicles I typically get as advertised if not better. This was one that was less largely due to feeling quite underpowered when I was on the highway. Of course the V6 is an option and I would definitely go for that. Thanks for the input and for watching!
@pasta-eo5mt
@pasta-eo5mt 6 лет назад
Unless I've been misinformed by the dealer, the slot is used when the battery in your fob dies. The car will still start if the fob is inserted in the slot, even if the fob's battery is dead. It's not a wireless charger for the fob nor is the battery in the fob rechargeable. You still have to replace the battery if it gets low or dies. Same as any other fob.

i’ve been getting 29.2 mpg, in mixed driving that includes a 70 mile daily commute. it’s never stuttered at the chance to pass or enter the freeway, albeit not a lamborghini. i don’t understand why everyone expects it to be, especially in the reviews? the forester has very little power advantage over the outlander and every mid thirties mom in yoga pants has one, yet i rarely hear complaints about its pick up speed, or it being reviewed in the likes of a sports car.
@PrimeAutotainment
@PrimeAutotainment 6 лет назад
That’s great, happy to hear you’re getting good MPGs! I definitely don’t expect it to be, but I expect it to be competitive within the class. Considering the price and discounts, it’s a good value especially for getting 3 rows. I definitely didn’t review it like a sports car..spending a lot of the time on the Interior and overall space, while also talking about other aspects of driving. For the people that want more power, they offer the V6 which is awesome because not all brands do anymore. For those that don’t need more power, this is just fine. Thanks for the input and I hope you continue to enjoy your Outlander!

I’m in the market for a medium sized crossover as a family car and have been taking a hard look at the Outlander. After 3 test drives, I still don’t think the pros quite outweigh the cons. Great AWD value from a Japanese brand (which has recently benefited from being acquired by the Nissan Renault conglomerate) but it comes up way short on driving dynamics. The engine and CVT combo wheeze along to keep up with traffic and the suspension is way too softly sprung for my taste. Wallowing at each application of the accelerator and a lot of leaning in the corners does not exactly inspire confidence. The interior ergonomics are puzzling and the lumbar support in the seats is poor. I love rooting for an underdog though, so I sincerely hope that Mitsubishi can leverage the Nissan Renault partnership and further develop the Outlander into a real contender. As for me, I’ve set my targets on the Mazda CX-5.
@PrimeAutotainment
@PrimeAutotainment 6 лет назад
Very well said! I feel the same as you in the driving dynamics, it definitely has improvements to make with that, although the GT model probably feels better. Hopefully you’re right about then getting help from their new partnership, time will tell. Good choice in that Mazda, they’ve gotten very impressive recently. Thanks for sharing this!
@iatsd
@iatsd 6 лет назад
So buy the 3 litre and avoid the CVT. As far as the driving dynamics go, unless you're buying German or a Mazda then it is no worse than any other brand and it's better than most.

I own a 2007 v6 model and the steering feel is great. I know they changed it to the electric and lost it. But if you get the gt version with the v6 it's much better. And I average around 21 mpg around town, mixed I get 24 and highway 29. On a five hour drive I had it up to 39 mpg! Don't know how but I was happy. So I would recommend. It's been reliable, fun to drive, plenty enough power and good gas mileage.
