Man I really wish Sig would make a 3.9" P320 XCompact (that isn't the Spectre model for $1200+) straight from Sig. The standard XCompact is great for concealed carry with some day at the range, but my dad added his discontinued slide/3.9" barrel from the P320 XCarry and it makes shooting so much more fun. A 3.9" XCompact would be the perfect all arounder too in my opinion.

All of your gripes are accurate, and as an M18 owner I agree. For me, I acknowledge these issues, but I keep the gun around because its the best gun I can shoot, and the original P320 was my first handgun. Between the nostalgia and my performance, I'm willing to deal with the cons of the firearm. Sure I could get my junk blown off from a bad fall, but statistically speaking I'll get into a motorcycle accident before that happens (motorcycle is my primary form of transpo).
@cheesypoofs6144

I generally like the P320 (aside from the imo kinda spongey feeling trigger), but my biggest beef with the guns is more what models Sig has on offer for them, particularly optics ready ones. Your options for optics ready P320s are: -One that already comes with one of their red dots so you end up paying extra for something you may not want -One that doesn't come with a red dot, but the rear sight is part of the optic mount cover so you lose your rear sight if you mount an optic -One that doesn't come with a red dot, and lets you keep your rear sight but it's a high end, more expensive model, so again you might be paying for bells and whistles you don't want If you want a basic, no frills P320, your best option is to just get a basic P320 and have someone mill it for an optic, but at that point you're stuck with whatever optic you get mounted to it. Sig also does not sell adapter plates, so you have to buy aftermarket if you want to mount something else. There's also 4 or so different optics mounting footprints across their various models. Some only accept Sig's own optics, some accept dpp, some accept rmr, some accept all. Allegedly some of the dpp footprint ones won't actually work with the dpp while some do. It's really bizarre to me that Sig can't offer a basic model with optics compatibility that retains the rear sights and lets the user pick their own optic, something that's offered by basically every other manufacturer out there.
@RT81775
@RT81775 2 года назад

I'm a big Glock fan. When the SIG was adopted by the military to replace the Beretta 92, beating out other designs, I did a lot of research, waited for the initial bugs to be worked out, and listened to the feedback of different users. Marine Corps should've stuck with the Beretta M9 platform instead of following the Army's lead in switching to the Sig P320 platform. I have the original X-five and also the Legion version. Both of them we're from the first shipment of production. The original took around 80 rounds to break in and was doing strange things in those 80 rounds but after that it's been 100% reliable. I have around 9,000 rounds through that firearm today. The Legion, similar experience about 50 or 60 rounds to break it in and after that it's been Flawless 100%. I have right at about 1,000 rounds through that one. I had the amazing experience to train with Jerry Miculek a couple years back for uspsa style shooting, the first time ever I've done something like that. There were two Shooters there with some pretty sweet Decked Out 2011s. For whatever reason I was faster and more accurate with my Sig X-five vs them. Not sure what to say about that other than I truly believe it's more about the shooter than the firearm being used. Train with what you have, and train again. I listened very closely to what Jerry Miculek says about this over the past few years and I've gotten better at shooting because of it. I don't rely on the gun to make me better I rely on myself to make me excellent. I shoot what I have I no longer worry about buying the "perfect" gun. I also have a G34 that I've had some constant feeding issues with the 125pf ammo I run through my Sig's.

No it's not a competition pistol, but it serves me well as an EDC, especially with the SureFire X300U and Leupold DeltaPoint Pro on it. The higher bore doesn't really bother me. I have low split times and because of the added weight of the X300U, I don't get as much muzzle flip as a naked pistol. I've never had a feed issue in 1000 rounds. Granted that may be low to some people, but for an every day shooter, that seems very reliable for a weapon that I really hope I never have to use except on the range.

The bore axis thing is so true. One of the first pistols I ever shot was the original P320 in 40 S&W, and I distinctly remember thinking, "Wow, that bopped back at me way more than I thought it would." Thing was a full-sized handgun, so I didn't expect it. Now, that being said, my buddy (the owner of the pistol) proceeded to lay flat on his back, lean up slightly to get a view between his boots, and nail a 1 1/2" wide pole across his pond at around 80 yards, so I have to give SOME credit where it's due.

I think you're ignoring the fact that both Sig and Glock are only interested in bringing the best $600 pistol to market with full knowledge that their customer base has every intention of making changes to them. I agree about the frame, I love it with a Wilson combat frame. Fair enough, but it was designed around the fact that there are thousands of options to put the best grip for you on it. Bore axis is quite a bit less important than you're making it out to be but I do understand that in the competition world milliseconds matter. The ergonomics, however, male it easier to put the first round on target, if only slightly better than glock. Seems like judging a defense pistol from a competition perspective is a little disingenuous. I'm at about 6000 rounds thru both M17 and M18 and I've had 2 failures. Both were stovepipe's with 115 grain federal while using a suppressor.

I feel the only fair comparison he even made was to a CZ or 1911. And only if you keep them to models in the same price range. Somehow complains about the terrible grip of a p320 while glocks terrible grip is OK. Then compares the low bore axis of guns way out of the price range to a modestly priced duty/PD gun. The only legitimate complaint in this video is the reliability. And yes if i had an unreliable copy I wouldn't use it either.

Reliability: My grandson has a G-17 MOS and a G-19. Both guns malfunction at least once every time we are at the range. We rented a PDP F because I wanted my wife to try it. It only got through a magazine without malfunctioning 2 or 3 times. If I based my opinion regarding the G17/19 and PDP off just this experience, it wouldn't look good for Walther or Glock. In general, our M&Ps are reliable as an anvil... the CZs are a tad more ammo picky, but a malfunction is rare. Today will be the first rounds thru my new P-320 Nitron Compact .45 and all I can say at this point is that it feels nice in hand and the trigger is nice. I picked it up yesterday, cleaned it, and lubed it. I don't anticipate any issues... but I plan to put 400 rounds thru it.

Update: 400 rounds of various ammunition weights and types downrange and zero malfunctions from the P-320 Compact .45 ACP. The bore axis doesn't seem to be a huge issue. Maybe a little more flip. It shoots right to point of aim... my wife was just stacking holes with it... she really likes it and she can rack the slide on it too. The grip could use a little more texture up high, but I can get a pretty solid purchase on it and it won't eat me up rubbing against my belly. I am ordering a couple of holsters for it now because I will definitely carry this. I asked the ol' lady on the way home which pistol (besides hers) is her favorite to shoot and she said it's a tie between the CZ 97B and the CZ P-01... and I can't argue with that!

The grip on the standard M18/P320 is one of my favorite grips…….so grip shape and grip texture are very subjective. For instance, I prefer the grip shape and texture of the original M&P Shield 9 mm over the new Shield Plus…… The “high bore axis” issue again is very subjective. I sold my APX full and Centurion because the slide even though it has a “lower” bore axis according to some, made the gun feel unbalanced and top heavy in my hands whereas the P320/M18 feels just about right. Recoil impulse to me was much stronger from the APX than the P320. I have zero problems getting and keeping a P320/M18 on target. I had to really work on keeping the APX on target due to muzzle flip. I have had zero issues and no malfunctions with my P320 and M18. Drop safe issue is not an issue with the M17 and M18 if the user uses the manual safety…….. Newer Sig P320s like mine……I have dropped it twice on concrete…….it did not spontaneously fire.
@thatotherperson2
@thatotherperson2 2 года назад
Bore axis is not subjective. It is mathematically quantifiable and there are consequences to high muzzle flip. Increased muzzle flip due to higher ballistic energy (compare a 9mm vs .40) doesn't effect how well the point of aim flattens back out because the spring pressure is proportionate to caliber and so heavy calibers reciprocate forward with a force proportionate to the recoil impulse. That IS NOT the case with bore axis. An autopistol is a pendulum with a fixed duration of one period, and in the same way that the period of a pendulum is determined by it's length rather than the mass of the plumb, a higher bore axis will not only generate higher torque but must travel over a longer arc and by effect will have a greater moment of inirtia as the slide begins to reciprocate. That all means that it takes a higher grip pressure to bring the muzzle back down to target and to keep it from breaking your grip. Those Berettas didn't feel chunkier because they had a higher axis. They either have heavier slides or you were imagining things, because a lower axis will create a lower center of gravity without fail. I'm not going to look at the specs on those guns but I wouldn't say the Berettas have a low bore axis at all.
@jeffmcclendon3835
@jeffmcclendon3835 2 года назад
@@thatotherperson2 My point was the lower bore axis (compared to the Sig P320s) of the Beretta APX did not help me with muzzle flip. The combination of shape of the grip and the weight of the APX slide do not subjectively fit me as well as the Sig P320. The newer APX A1 models have better ergonomics and less muzzle flip so far for me. No imagining things for me. Thanks

Height over bore seems to be a personal preference from my point of view. I measured a distance of 3/8” between the Glock and the SIG. A Glock has a more aggressive grip angle which probably factors into the mental aspect of the perceived recoil versus the SIG’s more neutral angle. I know I’m on the outlier as I like the original grips rounded and contoured grip versus the X grip which is squared off. The X grip by the way has less material at the backstrap to give you about an 1/8” less height over bore, and probably was partly introduced to get more of the Glock guys to switch over to SIG. When you tested all the different variants, did you ever use anything other than the standard medium sized grip modules? You might have enjoyed a large grip frame better. This is of course meaning that you can get the Carry, Full-size and compact all in small, medium, and large grip sizes. Recoil springs are not the same for all, and would be tuned for the most reliable extraction of the most common rounds of that caliber during design. Whether a semi-auto is hammer fired or striker shouldn’t effect the spring weight because it’s the explosive gases of the firing round that over come the hammer or striker in addition to the mass of the slide. You experienced a lot of stove pipes (failures to extract) on many different model P320’s. I think you should be asking yourself what is actually causing this to happen to you on so many different P320’s. Ammo and limp wristing seem to be the two biggest causes and most common that I know of. Not a personal dig, but a self analysis. My digs on the P320 are that it feels sloppy in the hands. The slide has vertical play where there is no support at the muzzle from the rails. I would prefer the front guide rail be longer to help with this or SIG to possibly come out with an all milled FCU. Their constant changes to models during production without clear designation, such as the optics cut, and Xcarry barrel compatibility are very hard to follow. There are other points that I can’t remember at this point, so overall I like the pistol. I have found it to be accurate (single ragged 10 ring holes at 21’), reliable (no malfunctions across multiple grip frames and slides/barrel lengths and 500+ rounds of mixed 115, 124, and 147grain), extremely modular, light weight (compared to a P226).

You are my favorite gun channel on RU-vid for many different reasons, but the main reason is that I trust your reviews. Two of your reviews in particular were deciding factors in gun purchases. I bought the Sig Sauer Legion p226 sao after watching your review on that pistol and I purchased the Shadow Systems mr920 after watching your review on their pistol. So both those companies should pay you some dollars or at least help out the kid's homeless shelter you advocate for on every video. The reason your videos are so influential to me is besides the fact that you shoot really well and are very knowledgeable about guns is the fact that I feel your reviews are the most honest on RU-vid and this video is a prime example of that honesty. Sig Sauer p320 is a decent handgun, but it's high bore axis is not ideal. The drop safe issue is very concerning and it does not reliably feed ammunition in my experience as well as Glock, CZ, Walther, Smith and Wesson or H&K. People mistakenly think that the military chooses the best weapons to equip service members with through their military trials and that is not true. The weapons that win the government contract are the ones that meet the minimum requirements at the lowest cost.

My buddy got a 320 and it has multiple malfunctions every time we go. We did find out many were caused from a bad mag, but even when the mag was tossed the malfunctions continued. Not hating on the 320 but I'm kinda meh towards them. I'd much rather go for handguns that are renowned for reliability and in my small experience the 320 just ain't it. Over all I'm not a fan of striker fired sig handguns, their rifles though..... The mcx is so good.

After a couple hundred rounds and switching to 124gr ball the issue subsided completely and hasn’t returned since, but it was extremely frustrating at the time. This is an honest review of the M-18, from the perspective of non-Mil; my everyday carry for a little over a year. No new lower. It's fucking great. If I aim slightly higher than the sight, I get deadshot. It cycles. It's not a drop issue. It's got great fall weight. Little recoil. And I'm small. This gun rides in my lower back, standard 17rnd mag. It's a beauty, I did however just order a Wilson combat lower.

I'll try some 115gr after I get 1000 rounds through it and see if anything changes...I was really disappointed when my first shot was perfect and my second shot didn't eject the round. I actually purchased my first handgun thanks to your videos, it was down to the 320 and the P10c for me. The deciding factor was definitely the ergonomics. The SiG just felt like a dewalt in my hands while the CZ just felt like a better fit and the texturing just made me feel better about getting a good grip on the thing. So I went home with the CZ. That and the gun just looked prettier

I’m a bit undecided. I’m an instructor for the Marine Corps civilian police academy at Fort Leonard Wood. We switched to the M17 in the past year. We have some issues with the weapons; some of which could be attributed to a failure on the student to either properly clean the firearm or some limp-wristing. But, I’ve also seen plenty of failures to feed or eject. Now, I personally own a P320C, and have lost count of the number of rounds fired from my pistol. I have had maybe a handful of failures, most while using cheap ammunition.

Yes there are some serious downfalls to the SIG p320, however for me it just fits in my hand, the trigger, the reliability, it's flexibility and it's point of aim, grip angle these things are overwhelmingly good. I think that's why a lot of the negatives are overlooked.

Not HOutlaw, but for anyone not aware the Sigs come with shelf life lubrication in them (the cream). You need to clean before firing ,dry out the firing pin area, and put proper lube in the proper places. Unlike how Glocks come with the copper colored lube that offers both shelf life/storage and out of the box lube ready for duty.

This is interesting! I have put thousands of rounds through my 320 xcarry and have NEVER had a malfunction, albeit anecdotal. I also need to mention that my Glock 19x hasn't malfunctioned either. I clean and lube the piss out of my guns hyper frequently and it seems to have paid off. They are my 2 go to carries and I don't skimp on the pampering of those 2 specifically. Excellent content though man! 🤘 *edit* I also live in the middle of a gigantic prairie with no dust anywhere in sight. Maybe I need to put these things through more harsh environmental testing. In my experience in competition the p320 is 100% reliable with little to no maintenance. I see more glock malfunctions then I ever see with a p320 mainly from people modifying the garbage trigger to improve it & get light strikes. I prob have 200k rounds through 2 legions & have never had a malfunctions not caused by me or ammo. As far as weight yes in competition guys add the tungsten grio for weight just like guys shoot cz because there so heavier (heavier than a p320 legion) and imo the lack of a trigger safety is a huge benefit when shooting weekhand. It's not a perfect gun by any means but there is a reason it's so popular in competition, shootablity,durability,reliability & modularity not to mention u ca n get an amazing striker trigger.

X Compact owner here, love it. 3k rounds, zero malfs. I agree that the muzzle is a little flippy compared to other designs, but with 9mm recoil, even +P, I do not find it to be a problem. Like another commenter, I have huge hands , had to get the large grip module from Sig, and it could be a little more ergonomic, but I find it comfortable and controllable. The gun is definitely more accurate than me. Looking at a lot of the comments on this vid, I'm seeing that the X model owners are all happy with theirs. I don't know exactly what is different for the X slide other than the nice tritium sights, but this seems to be a trend- x compacts and carry work great, standard 320s and m17/18s have issues. That was a LOT of stovepipes! Makes me wonder about your ammo, maybe even your extractor. Were they clean, or a hundred rounds in at the time? Thanks for the vid!

From an engineering standpoint it's a bit of an awkward retrofit of the p250, with a lot of "why would you ever do it this way?" The main advantage in the competitive world seems to be "we've added weights to it." Effective, yes, but not exciting.

I have an M17 & M18, both completely "stock" other than TALON Grips. The ONLY time I've had malfunctions was after about 1000 rounds of not cleaning it, I switched from "various range ammo" to Magtech ammo. Upon switching to Magtech I started having one failure-to-fire (light strike?) about every 50-100 rounds. After a VERY thorough cleaning I discovered tiny brass particles in the striker assembly. I stopped using the Magtech in my P320s and stopped having issues. [NOTE: The Magtech ammo ran just fine in my P365 and in my S&W M&P.]

I'm glad to hear about the drop safe issue being brought up again. I agree that it's clearly not a wide spread issue, but is still an issue nonetheless. I was impressed to see the P320 run perfectly in Garand Thumb's (exaggerated but entertaining) frozen handgun video, but I think the P320 still has needs some more time to be proven. The lack of trigger safety means it went bang even when frozen, but if it means it can go bang without trying, that's a problem. Now that Sig basically owns the majority of US military contracts, they deserved to get knocked down a peg, since having those contracts means they may skimp on QC and other factors to keep raking in the dough. Great video
