You're the best Scotty. The only other car shop I watch is Nicks Garage in Canada, he does just mechanics, Mopar expert mostly, he just finished a complete frame off restoration of a 69 Charger 500 for a Customer, he does a lot of muscle car work, engine and dyno work a ton. A fun show if you're into muscle cars. You're way more "in tune" with all the auto markets.🇺🇸👍

The iridium plugs really do stand up over time. I just did my first plug change in my current car (2016 Mazda) and after 104K miles? The factory original iridium plugs were very close to the proper gap. And I went about 30K miles over the recommended service interval! Coolant, on the other hand? I don’t care if they say it can last 7 years or 100K miles. I flush and fill the system every 2-3 years, like 40-50K miles. Coolant is dirt cheap. Engines, water pumps, and radiators cost real money.

Up to you but I've had a dodge neon change coolant twice . Last 275k . 2003 civic haven't changed it once but I do check 195k . Oil I change every 10k synthetic when I had it tested the TBN was still strong . On the neon I changed the spark plugs every 30k . I didn't think it was smart because the threads get worn out after a while . Om the civic I only changed them twice

Love Scotty...there are five things spark plugs, air filter, coolant but I always until 2000 changed the oil every 10k and fuel filter. He speaks my language. Back when cars were easy to fix yourself the good old days I'd scramble over the junkyard for parts. Cars are now far too over-designed and reliant on computers.

Agreed but apparently they are more reliable these days. Cars built today are expected to last longer than cars buily any other time. Certainly in the UK cars are taken off the roar due to rust/bodywork before they break mechanically. The worst thing about modern cars is most are bought via finance deals and who is going to do proper maintenance on a car that they are leasing? I did 40,000 miles in my bmw without an oil change.
@michaelws6247
@michaelws6247 2 года назад
Car company’s claim we can go 7.5 to 10k miles on oil changes but search it on RU-vid. Even synthetic oil when left in that long is clogging up the oil passages in the variable valve timing engines.
@nigelclark7360
@nigelclark7360 2 года назад
@@michaelws6247 It also clogs up the turbo oil pipes, the feed and drain pipe causing lack of oil to the turbo shaft bearing, and eventually the turbo starts to break up and bits start getting in to the engine also the turbo shaft seal goes and oil then gets into the exhaust causing excessive blue smoke out of the exhaust .

I always change my coolant every 5 years or 60,000 miles regardless of what type it is. I prefer to have a clean system. I don’t like leaving things too long or to chance. I prefer to do more maintenance than less as this will make the car last longer. In my shop I always advise every 5 years or 60,000 miles Regardless. I’m not the type of mechanic that likes set & forget. I prefer to check everything every 6mths or so. I’m very fussy

Same here I have a Kia Forte for a daily the trannys are life trannys so they say meaning they don’t recommend to change the fluid and no dipstick so I said not me so I had them replace the tranny fluid at 30k miles and going to do it again at 50-60k miles because not all the old stuff comes out with a drain and fill. I don’t play around either I change everything ahead of time oil I use full synthetic every 4 to 5k even though dealer says I can go 7k I do the opposite of what they say.

I do remember a Chrysler Valiant in the 1960's which used 'Champion' spark plugs (N‐14Y), and their maintenance schedule was (after 4,000 miles, or 3 months (oil change)) to clean them, then the next oil (and oil filter change), replace. Then came the 'copper core' types, but platinum was a long way off, because of not only the price, but using leaded fuel 'dissolved' the platinum electrode... So when unleaded fuel came into use, platinum was the premium material for a long lasting plug...

I once had a Chrysler New Yorker, I think it was a 1970 model. I wanted to put in new plugs. The back six plugs were easy to change. But I couldn't figure out how to change the front two plugs... there was no way I could reach them. I took the car into a mechanic and watched him change the front plugs. He had to raise the vehicle on a lift; when the front two wheels dropped down, he had to reach in through the wheel well to get to the plugs.

Iridium and platinum plugs are typically more resistive which can result in weaker spark especially in older engines that don't run COP or waste spark ignition systems. This can result in misfires at higher revs and heavier throttle loads not to mention greater stress on your coil packs (particularly OEM) which could lead to premature coil failure. Check misfire counts with a OBDI/OBDII scan tool if supported, either way, you'll find out the hard way with pre OBDI vehicles.

Back in the 70's, I've always used AC DELCO standard plugs in my Fords. Car ran better and plugs lasted longer. And yes, u had to be careful cuz some were longer than the originals.

I’ve changed the spark plugs on a 98 Camry and a 99 Lexus ES 300. I didn’t have to take any of the car apart to do it. But the car took some of my skin apart lol

I had a 1999 Honda CRV, changed to iridium plugs and it wouldn’t idle. Bought the nippon den so plugs like the ones I pulled out and it ran like a champ.

I had an 04 Mitsubishi Outlander with 201K when it got it's first set of spark plugs. They weren't aweful either.

*The oem Iridium Denso spark plugs lasted 252k plus miles on my 09 Toyota Camry. Not a great feat, but hey I never had any misfiring until the 252k mile mark!!!*

100% for Scotty. But I’ve only ever ran K&N in my Toyotas. Never an issue. I maintain the MAF…. 255000 on the Tacoma and runs like new…..

Scotty. I gotta ask. With Toyota going to turbo everything, have other companies with chain driven V8 engines such as Ford and Nissan become more reliable than like Toyotas with turbo v6s
