Hey all, in this video I will teach you 3 things I wish I knew before starting calisthenics. I cover the most common mistakes people make as beginners. I truly feel when the average person does these, their transformation slows down and the effectiveness of their bodyweight workout progress suffers.

I would add to the list ,don't watch body building videos. Understand that you must maintain a low body mass , and that professional body builders and increasingly non p r o's are getting "help" .Their bodies are not natural.watch calisthenics videos to see real body types and varieties of ,but be wary of form and take advice from only a few sources such as this channel and Calimove

1. Always warm up. 2. Start slow after being ill. 3. Don't give 120% for your ego, you'll get hurt. 4. Start with (shoulder) mobility NOW and make it a habit.

@@gappuma7883 Most exercises you do that use your shoulders e.g. Push-ups & dips, force an internal rotation on your shoulders. To compensate for that internal rotation, you need to externally rotate the shoulder. The best way to do this is to do mobility exercises for the shoulder. There are a few exercises out there and a lot of videos about this. It's extremely important to externally rotate the shoulder to prevent injury. He's probably talking about that...

Take your time and practice the perfect form before moving to harder progressions or weight even it means that you will lose half of your reps in that exercise. Own the exercise, don't let it own you.

The biggest piece of advice I give people when they see me do stuff like that is to watch your vids man. Also I look up to you, you're the perfect person for me because I'm 6 foot 1 and 98kg's. and yet im here banging out muscle ups and front levers like its nothing. And i learned it all here man, thanks :).

chinom lol sorry man i hear that alot.. i dont know why, i used to powerlift im like 18% bodyfat atm but i like being able to do this stuff with alot of mass. Currently im 102kg hehe. Natty to, guess i just have a heavy posture i really dont know.

Probs because you a beast and powerlifters are normal quite strong and know how to get tight and use tension which is good for bodyweight exercises

john1987805 very well pointed. 25 crappy pull ups won't give you a single one one arm pullup, cause muscle cooperative tension is weak. Even if someone can do just 4-5 perfect pullup, one arm pullup is possible, cause you gain what you challange

thats true when i was 17 i could barely do more than 4 pull ups and i could do 1,5 pull up(when u do a pull up wiht one arm and the other grabing your own arm)

Lord Hobo Of Savior not neccessarily crossfit ones (the are better crossfit pullups and worse crossfit pullups) but extreme kipping, the so called "round" pullups (people make circles goin up/down) and of course some really bad crossdit pullups are very useless

Advice: Treat mobility training with the same respect you give to strength training. If you don’t, you’re going to hit a brick wall where you physically can’t progress to more advanced movements.

Don't underestimate the importance of shoulder stability and mobility and its ability to improuve significantly especially for older guys like me who work hard labor jobs and decided to get in shape later on in their life .

Shoulders are made to fail. Learn how they work and what you shouldn't do with them. Especially people who are hard working should watch out for them. If you experience problems locate the problem. Chest/ neck/ back/ arms or if it's actually the shoulder. For anyone looking for good advice check out the channel 'athlean x'.

Don't limit yourself by comparing people in your age group to what you can or can't do. At 55, and 90 kg. body weight, I'm doing 70 lb weighted dips, 10-15 pullups per set, heavy sandbag lifts, etc., But don't know anyone that I rub elbows with that can do the same. The point is, compare yourself to yourself and have confidence in what you can achieve. Think marathon, not sprint!

If you are sure it is an injury sorry for you. But if it is just pain and you think it is an injury, i think it is better you check it with a doctor. If it is not an injury that prevents you from training maybe you are not doing correct forms while training or you need to do stretching exercises, lookup videos on youtube that tackle knee problems. I went through knee pain and at one period of time i used to hear cracking sounds while squating down. But now i do parkour, kitesurfing and snowboarding with no issues and i am 39 years old

My tip would be this : buy resistance bands! I learned the muscle-up thanks to bands and now I'm learning the levers with them. It's the best way to learn skills.

@Unicorn, you can either put the band around your feet (which takes away a lot of your core though), or you can put the band under your lower back/butt

First - great video. Thanks for putting the time and effort into it. My advice: 1. Stay healthy. Personally, there have been times when my diet was not right. I used to have back pain which turned out to be a muscle issue in leg pulling on my spine. Some health issues will prevent gains and may lead to injuries. 2. Be patient. Everyone gets results at different rates. If you have plateaued for a while it may be worth it to get some help from someone with more experience. 3. Enjoy what you do, even the training. If you are not enjoying the exercise then either get some coaching or change up your routine. Life is too short to be spent on things that are not enjoyable.

This can't be understated. I didn't do this and got a lot of injuries. Now I do deep breathing and warm up and make sure to get a lot of blood flowing to each part of my body and also hype up mentally and then do stuff and have no problems.

Really good video thank you! I’m only two week in and I’ve found calisthenics to be a really mentally positive approach to exercise. In the gym I found myself exercising 100% focused on shaping my body, but with calisthenics it’s so refreshing to focus on strength and progression, with body results being an added bonus. Every time I look in the mirror I think “that’s fine because I’ll look better in a few month” and I MEVER gave myself that much time to grow when doing general gym. Changing my lifestyle and I like it!

ive only been doing calisthenics for about a year and half but the main thing that has made a difference in my training that shot me from slow progress to much much faster gains in strength and skills was consistency and the second thing was form the 3rd and i feel just as important was mind set without a clear goal you will go no where. one must start to finish. one must know where you are to know where you want to go. how you get there is up to you .

Wrong. Dont matter if you're an old lady or a man doing a competition or just to live life. You NEED muscles.. having strong muscles you will be able to burn more calories per min while at rest . You will be able to avoid any aches and pains in your lower back, upper back, hip flexors etc. You will be able to avoid any joint problems (strong muscles=strong joints) . You will be able to perform daily activities with ease. You will be able live longer due to the fact that when you work out you are also working out your heart... so if you want to speak about live life and happy etc... then YOU NEED MUSCLES . As a personal trainer I see it every day in my clients... the change in them is amazing 💪

How can you disagree that weight training improves living experience by saying that you felt good for some time until you hurt yourself and now are back to the starting point? I've been weight training for some years now, my body never felt better, I look good, I'm relatively strong and I take extra care to train with longevity in mind. Nearing my thirties and weight training is such a core part of my lifestyle that I will be in the game for a long time. Talking about what you used to do and now don't because you are hurt is a little irrelevant to the conversation no?

Love this video, especially when you talked about how a generalist calisthenics athlete will need to be patient :) My advice to beginners would to be stop searching for different kinds of method, the perfect workout program or the best tutorial on something. Just do a simple research on a topic you want to know (this channel is a good one!), get a decent amount of information and go from there. Many people find themselves watching many RU-vid videos and over analyze what they need to do. They don’t actually put in the work and LEARN from their mistakes. Calisthenics is a journey. We will learn and adapt if we actually put in the work. Plus that is what makes it fun :)

100%! That was me, watching video after video, channel after channel, coaches after coaches and gathering all the knowledge, but in the end not doing much with it till i started to keep it simple, start with basics, and learn from there.

Thanks for the sharing, Daniel! Started calisthenics in 2012, not as good as you. Managed only back lever and tucked front, still working on muscle up now. If I were to give 3 points, 1. "Be patience. Stay focused. You'll get there" Kudos to the beginner advantage point. It can be demoralizing but it's natural, happens to everyone, hang in there. I resonate with your social media point, and I think this applies to life in general. Stay in your own lane. If you have the time to be sour and/or bitter watching others, you are not focused enough. 2. "Strength first, technique follows" This is somewhere along the line with your generalization vs specialization point. Foundation, foundation, foundation. 3. Not necessarily "calisthenics only" Do whatever it keeps the journey fun, fresh, and move towards your goal. Weightlift, weighted calisthenics moves. Be open-minded to the spices. Now, if I may add on 1 more, 4. "Know when to take a break" Overtrain in term of volume or progression. This might come with experience, and it's a fine line, but it's crucial. Irreversible injured condition is killing. Try not to go there. Cheers!!

My advice is simple. I would tell myself "You're gifted, your strength is incredible. Do not get discouraged by day to day things... never stop training"

I am a female just turned 40. I am quite fit (I bike, stretch and do vinyasa several times a week). A while ago I got really excited about building strong and lean muscles. I am realistic as to what I can expect but I would like to follow a plan. Would any of yours work for women? Could you recommend any? Thank you 😊

Always consult a real physical therapist/licensed coach to make sure you are working even the basics (squats, push ups, pull ups etc.) with correct form, correct posture and activating the right muscle groups. This comes from someone who trained with the wrong technique for years and wasted alot of time on it.

Best and most simpel advice I can give to beginners: 1.Skip the Kip 2.Always use full range of motion on all movements 3.Always progress on your exercises

Dont you think kipping once you've reached failure on strict form would be good to sort of push your limits? I havent done calisthenics in a while but at the gym, I usually burn out my exercises by lowering weight and going to failure after i finish my last set. Kipping and cheating on your pull ups and stuff after you cant do any more strict ones is kinda the same thing ?

shaksta4, Its possible, but the problem with kipping is that A. You loose body tension, which can lead to instability to the moving joints, and potentialy injury. B. You cant measure amount of assistence with kipping, which may lead to too less load. I much prefer negatives. Load is constent and body tension is not compremised.

Don't neglect self-care! In fact, integrate it into your plan/exercise/workouts! (Especially dealing with the wrists and joints that don't heal/repair as quickly as other soft-tissue)

If you can't flex your specific muscle with no weights, then you don't have a mind-muscle connection with that muscle.

in my opinion,for thee beginner,there is another advice...make it simple. make things simple is going to give you long term results without stress too much. i say this,because when i was beginner i follow a workout plan very unpleasant made by myself. why? because i couldn't understand that skill training is not regular. One day you can destroy yourself by doing basic,another day you can do also the most difficult form for your body. Make things simple also mean add variety to your training program. It also mean listen to your body and give yourself rest,do what you can do. don't you agree?? thanks fitness faq's for all the true informations you give us. really,thanks. goodbye

Hamza Mhl I simply have made a program with exercises that i didn't like,too much isolation,too much times x week. very orrible. complicate and i didn't understand nothing. now i'm 3 years of training (3 years are few,i know but they are enough to understand something,howevee not enough at all to understand something). This is my personal opinion!:-)

Depends on what skills you want to train. If you want to learn say the front lever and plan then you can do skill training for front lever before pull workout and planche training before push workout . After skills you do basics

Stretching is mental. Bones only go so far. And for example, when i stretch my hamstring my quadricep is turned off, naturally it should be contracting. Or else my stretched hamstring belives why quadriceps our musch stronger than thet actually are

What works for me in the beginning is "grease the groove". Everytime you pass a pull up bar in your home, do a pull up and push up (add squat if you want). I started with negatives neutral grip, chin up then pull up. I find it more effective to increase the number at the beginning than doing 40min workout. It's better to space it out during the day. Once you can do 5 pull up, you could add 40min workout, either 3 days full body workout or PPL (push pull leg 6 days a week routine).

I've just found a fine app, show how to progress to advanced techniques - 6 of em. ((thenics)) e.g. pull up is split up in 6 steps, each step contains a hard workout for a person at that level of fitness. i was able to do 4 steps of piston squat from beggining, did workout of step 5, it was challening my legs are still hurting after 2 days gonna try to do step 5 and 6 tomorrow. But my triceps and abs suck so for every other one i can do 1 or 0 steps. XDD also very fast i noticed how important flexibility/mobility is as i believe i have enough muscle/strenght to do a few steps in V-sit but my legs are not flexible going up from sitting position. my way of training is push limits with breaks up to 90s until you feel a decent amount of pain while doing exercises and little pain after 60 seconds. Plus stop training that muscle until it stops hurting. But I'm newbie
