As someone who has read hundreds of personal statements, I've noticed certain themes that consistently appear in successful applications to Harvard Business School and indeed any other MBA program. I want to share three of these key themes with you: injecting personality, talking about responsibility in leadership, and demonstrating exceptionality. By showing your unique personality, sharing examples of times when you stepped up as a leader, and highlighting things that you've done that few other people have, you can increase your chances of being accepted into the program.
I will be using two successful Harvard Business School applications as examples and highlighting specific instances where the candidates effectively demonstrated personality, vulnerability, leadership, and exceptionality. The language used to describe leadership is also crucial, and I recommend using active verbs [like 'lead'] and avoiding passive language to accentuate your leadership.
