In this video I will be talking about my personal tips for people who are new with collecting DDR militaria and don’t know where to start with East German uniforms
I own an east german Sturmgepäck, I use it daily as my school backpack, I really like it, it's unique, comfortable and versatile, and it's an original piece of history, so even better!
I got a question; boot related. Are the East German boots like the Soviet kirza/kersey boots where you can only wear them with footwraps? Or are the East German boots meant to be worn with socks like what we're familiar with in the west? Also any good sites for reproduction uniforms and/or gear?
Good question, I do not collect Soviet gear I do plan to but not right now as all the Soviet uniforms are in Ukraine and for all I know the uniform was obliterated in a Russian artillery attack. I do not have any knowledge of Soviet uniforms at all. What I can tell you is East German boots are meant to be worn with socks. Also what reproduction militaria are you looking for?
@@Genosse_Richard1961 Understandable! The Soviet stuff is a bit sketchy right now, with the war as you mentioned. That's good to know! I bought up the Soviet boots because you can only wear footwraps with those, otherwise mad blisters. And seeing that the Soviets backed East Germany, hence why I asked in the first place. (Sorry, I tend to over explain myself hehe) As for militaria? East German stuff mainly. Like what you have in the video; I'm a bit of a big guy (xxl-ish. 6'3 and on the burly side almost, us 13 for boots). Thinking the gear would be great for my next camping trip.
@@BaronVonPurp ahh understandable, yea are you interested in collecting East German militaria or are you completely new to the whole thing? Anyway if you are looking or by a strichtarn bdu like I have in the video I recommend looking for a size SG48 or a G52 or something like that. I’m not exactly a tailor so I couldn’t tell you the exact size you would need but I can give you an area to look. With boots they are pretty good and durable but I kinda wouldn’t recommend wearing them on a hike as they will gain wear and potentially damage the boots depending on where your going. But I’m not saying to not use them for a hike I would personally vote against using them for a hike just to prevent wear and potential damage to the boots. Although what I want to advise you the most on is when you get you boots apply a leather hydrater and preserver to them. I personally use neatsfoot oil leather hydrater and preserver or neatsfoot oil leather protector. They do they same thing and work very fine. Of course after that you have to polish the boots to trap the protector inside the leather which I plan on making a video about very soon. Also the boot size you should be looking for is a size 30/31 euro size. You’ll know because on the bottom of the boot you’ll see a number.
@@Genosse_Richard1961 Completely new, I admit! My apologies on not knowing the correct terminology. The Strichtarn BDU is mainly what I'd be after. And I appreciate you ball-parking the info for me! I was looking on GermanDOTmilitaria, tridentmilitary and some other sites. Seems like everyone's outta stock for the time being (with Christmas so close, I'm not surprised). Do you have any particular websites you recommend? As for polish and care? Sounds great to me! I appreciate your input and your eye for detail. I'll have to check out the boots myself when I get them. You know, breaking them in and such. Obviously wanna get a feel for them, the quality, etc.
@@BaronVonPurp I was completely new to this community at one point in time and I can assure you if your really into this you’ll understand it. Your okay with not using proper terminology all people who are new to collecting have that same issue at the beginning. Also GermanDotMilitaria is run by an actual veteran of the Former DDR. Is name is Tristan and he is a very very very nice and consistent person if you ever go to purchase from his site I would recommend talking to him on Facebook or Instagram. Also yes I will always be here to answer any questions you may have about care for the boots. They should have already been broken in when the where issued but either than that I am here to help so if you have any questions I am on RU-vid and Instagram my username for my instagram is in my bio of my RU-vid account. Also trident military I’m not very sure of that site as I’ve never heard anything about them but I have looked at it. And lastly the only websites that I could recommend you are GermanDotMilitaria, Ebay and Hessen Antique.
Hey , I just ordered a NVA strichtarn pants and jacket I havent received it yet I know they have the place to put the suspenders for the pants which I will probably end up using , I am not familiar with styles of suspender do you think it would matter which kind I would get for now ? I am planning on getting a proper nva pair but for the time being does it matter what kind is used or does it have to be a certain kind of suspender ? Sorry if this is a ridiculous question I just dont want to buy a pair of suspenders and they dont work or fit on the pants otherwise I love the video 😁
Hello, sorry for the three week late response I greatly apologize, there are two suspenders that are used for field uniforms, there is the elastic suspenders that are used for the D rings on your pants and the nylon suspenders for your belt holding your field gear. @@Genosse_Richard1961 hey richard can i ask you another thing I just got my uniform, I noticed the pants have 3 steel rings in the upper part, Are they supposed to get attached to the grey suspenders Or the nva soldiers used two pairs of suspenders?
@@Macinatorecazzaro you are always welcome to ask me as many questions as you want, to answer your question yes, the nva field kit uses two suspenders. The grey nylon suspenders hold up your grey field belt that has your mag pouch, e-tool, canteen, and bayonet. The second set of suspenders for under the camo is green and brown.
The shovel cover is incorrect, that’s the UTV cover which was a future implementation of the NVA military. The grey pleather cover would be correct for this type
I don’t know how to pack an NBC suit I got mine a year ago and I didn’t wanna get into a situation where I didn’t know how to pack it back in. I think there is a photo of how to do it but I’m not certain.
@user-dn4vu3rd7v My apologies, I made this video a while ago. Since then my interest in the hobby has faded. But I will still help. I think that either they wore the chemical suit or the sturmpack. I don’t think they would’ve worn both as I’ve never seen that combination from what I remember.
@@Genosse_Richard1961 okay, so now we've established when a squad went off by itself they like you said would wear sturmpäck and possibly they would wear the NBC suit under the sturmpäck.
@@Scottishrusball depends on the seller, shipping. Most of the stuff should be cheap. It’s just gonna be your e-tool, bayonet, boots, and helmet that’s probably gonna be the most expensive out of everything.
I havent watched the full vid yet but i got a question, How do you connect the Y straps to the belt, I just got my east german bag pack and suspenders (Bought the winter bag pack) Do i need to buy some rings to connect it? Or do i need something else.
@@RandomStuffUploaded245 there’s gonna be a L clip and then below that are your D rings. The rings loop up and over the belt and connect to the clip. If you look at any NVA field uniform you’ll see a perfect example.
What other places besides GermanDotMilitaria and Ebay can i use to find an East German Uniform? And how do i make sure that the strichtarn color matches between all the pieces?
Those are the only two websites I know of that are legit, good websites. I don’t know if any other websites right now. To make sure the color of your strichtarn matches between all the pieces it’s easy to tell the color pattern differences.
Hi man, I just started collecting this uniform for an airsoft cosplay/LARP. What sort of things should I order since my budget is tight and I don't really need the whole thing, just a top, trousers and chest webbing for magazines. What should I look for specifically in items? I've ordered a top and trousers. Thank you!
Honestly if you wanted to do a full kit in the future my kit is almost done and it’s a lot. But for airsoft I would recommend the 4-cell mag pouch, field belt, suspenders, helmet, and the canteen. I can’t tell you exactly what you should get aside from my opinion. But that’s my personal shot at what I think would do fairly decent for a strictly airsoft kit. You could just do a full gear setup which is the 4-cell mag pouch, e-tool, canteen, gas mask carrier bag, bayonet, suspenders, and the grey belt of course.
The uniform with the dark color and cuff tabs are for ceremony of you sleep parades the service uniform does not have any cuff tabs can you make a video on the dress uniform show the stamps on the inside I can help you with the date
For me I bought them off of eBay which is a good place for East German militaria, if you can’t find any on there then I would recommend looking at GermanDotMilitaria. GDT is run by a veteran of the former NVA and has amazing prices as well as good customer service. Depending on how tall you are your size differs, if you are talking about a dress uniform or a strichtarn BDU set I’m not sure but if you let me know what your talking about specifically I can help you out.
