This is helpful. I will keep in mind intensity. Currently working on the on nutrition and it’s nice to hear that yes, I need carbs. (I know this, and yet struggle! Hah)

This is actually fascinating. I've watched now hundreds of videos on the latest science that reference all sorts of new studies that basically say exactly this. That two hard sets or lower volumes is better than more sets at lower efforts. And that cardio doesn't kill gains and that the volume could! And that the "hypertrophy" rep range of 6-15(all the way upto 30 also works) is the best place for actually stimulating muscle growth. And that nurtition and timing and adequate carbs is necessary. So how is it that you just happen to have nailed everything in this video, without wanting to sound concdescening but most opinion based videos are off by a little or quite a lot!

Because this isn’t an opinion based video. I have a PhD in exercise physiology with a lot of course work in exercise physiology, muscle physiology and metabolic physiology. My research training is in exercise and post meal metabolism. Have certification / course work in sport nutrition. And am a coach and athlete my self. I don’t think there’s any coincidence here that this content would be accurate. I guess I’m wondering why you would view this video as an opinion piece or assuming it wouldn’t be! 💪🏻💪🏻 Not that I won’t ever be wrong or am not always learning. But I would err on it being in alignment with science because most of my views are!

@@doclyssfitness Because typical youtube fitness influencers, some who have doctorates do not always get it right. They may even reference studies and go ahead a prescribe something based on their understanding of the literature and their experience, which later has been proven incorrect. Whilst here you're talking about stuff only recently agreed upon, like the minimum effective dose conversation, where the idea of two hard sets (aka close to failure) has been kinda proven as the better way than high volume, which was always seen as "the main driver of hypertrophy". Basically Layne Norton and Menno Henselmans have several videos criticising other "experts" and their interpretations of research which no one can be 100% right on, but these guys point out various examples of wrong information being put out there. Anyway, great video, great content, great explanations!

@@qalih I would like to think I am more than your typical RU-vid influencer 😜. I do also technically have more formal training than Menno and sometimes find his overviews of studies to be lack luster outside of his niche. While yes there’s plenty of people milking their titles to spew all sorts of nonsense that Layne often points out that’s usually people being largely obtuse for clicks/views or speaking way outside their actual scope . If you stick around or are familiar with my other stuff my track record is historically being pretty well read or up to date on things or learning from my peers with more expertise in parallel areas. Of course I and other people (even with doctorates) will be wrong and change their views as we learn more or new evidence comes out- but I don’t think that’s something to chastise people on and is a good thing. And what we’re supposed to do! Anyways thanks!

I'm probably guilty of undereating... I have trouble eating more, get nauseated. Thank you for the informative video.

MORE CARBS 🙌🏼 Such a key piece that many people don’t think of (or they’re doing the exact opposite). Thanks for these tips!

Love this and perfect timing for me. I have already set a goal for myself in 2024 to start running more and maybe train for a 5k. Thank you for breaking this down, it makes me have a better head space about running and lifting. I’ve lifted weights since high school and have always been told to not run and lift weights due to it killing the gains. Can’t wait to branch out in 2024 with my training.

I really appreciate all the content you share - I’m a total beginner on all fronts to formal exercise after growing up dancing and taking a break from that during the pandemic. I appreciate how you emphasize that something is better than nothing, and that we don’t have to be perfect to start exercising (even if I’m still working on internalizing that lol). Most of life seems to fall in a “messy middle” so thanks for sharing your perspective and the science with us!!

This is so helpful for me. I have my first ultramarathon next October and I’m currently trying to determine my training for building a good strong base in running and strength training and then build in actual race training blocks for shorter races throughout the year leading up to this big one- and of course a training block for that one specifically too. Gotta remember to keep the intensity high with my sets while running, and not worry about fitting in super long lifting sessions

Thank you for this video. My last year my goal was to run a half marathon. I ran three! But I felt my strength training took a back seat.

A little hypertrophy all the time, yeah! This really seems like a helpful tip for me who is a recovering perfectionist, as I can aim for hypertrophy as my goal rather than a certain amount of reps etc. Love this perspective and this podcast, I'm always learning something, thanks for educating me!

Thanks so much for the helpful information! Started lifting a few months ago and am still looking for all the tips! I thought it was really interesting to learn how important eating carbs is, since it gives your body something other than protein to use for energy 💪🏼
