In this Video Gill has 3 tips to help you improve your snowboard turns. Today we're snowboarding on Blackcomb mountain in Whistler, B.C. Gill's doing her snowboard turns on groomed runs in the 7th Heaven area. The first tip is too keep your knees bent around your turn, then stand up in between turns. This will help you absorb the pressure yous snowboard builds around the turn. The second tip is to use your back hand to help steer your snowboard. This is very effective for your toe turn and helps to steer more effectively. The third tip is to think of making a line in the snow behind you as you turn. This will help to improve you carving skills. For more snowboard tips from Gill give this video a like. Check out the intermediate playlist for more videos to improve your snowboarding. Thanks for watching!

Ryan Knaptons carving video about having a silent upper body and making little miny carves was pretty inspiring for me. I notice I'm not where I was at the end of last season with that technique but it is pretty important. I used that technique for everything. Speed checks for jumps and jibs. Maneuvering around people and obstacles. I had been doing it all along but being that someone zeroed my focus on it I really improved.

using the back hand to direct your turns is one of the best tips i've picked up from this channel. one of the things I'm working on currently is learning to carve evenly and smoothly at high speeds, and I've found that really throwing your back hand to initiate turns is super helpful at high speeds in particular. also just a shoutout to this channel in general! I ride with mostly skiers and when we talk shop about what techniques we use, I always find myself saying "well Kevin from SnowboardProCamp said this" and now it's become a running joke with my skier friends. this channel has definitely helped me improve my riding tenfold, thanks Kevin!

Thanks Gill! Just started my first season in Bansko and found the tips really helpful. Instead of over thinking the turn, I just thought about the line in the snow and it changed my boarding completely!

First of all thanks for all your video’s. I started with snowboarding two months ago, and your videos are definitely helping. I recommend to al beginners to take lessons. Another tip for beginners, try to practice your turns in powder. It’s so much easier. The last three months I’ve been riding in Austria, France and now Hakuba, Japan. Here in japan there is so much powder, my turns are going great much better than in France and Austria. The powder helps a lot. When you feel you are about to catch and edge, you can adjust your posture (without falling), and continue with the turns. On a side note, I’m riding with Step On’s on a Burton Amplifier board. I’m now familiar with the Step On’s and they are great. I just lock in straight away from the chairlift. I don’t recommend these bindings for beginners though. It looks easy to lock in on all the videos, but it isn’t that easy, it takes time & practice. Also the Burton Amplifier isn’t the easiest board for beginners, not so flexible. I’m now familiar with the bindings and board, and loving them. I still make mistakes, my legs are too straight sometimes. Do you have any tips to practice to bend your knees? My instructor told me to start with yoga and boxing to become more flexible. Cheers.

I found it easier to steer with front hand, as my snowboard instructor once said where your hand is pointing at, that’s where your body will turn towards

I'm actually a snowboard instructor and everything was great about the video except using the back hand, that will start counter rotation and will start to make you turn slower and less in control

Adam Cross i can‘t think of a way it could start Counter Rotation
@adamcross4946
@adamcross4946 6 лет назад
Phil Caspari if you start bringing the back hand around it turns your shoulders and most people have a tendency to turn their hand/arm in the opposite direction that they're turning, this causes counter rotation, the upper body goes one way and the lower goes the other way
@philcaspari6911
@philcaspari6911 6 лет назад
But the point of steering with your backhand is to turn it into the direction you want to turn
@roddynesbitt767

I guess as an instructor you come across all types but keeping the backhand over the tail is a tip that really helped me with turns.
@BB0YMatty

Agreed, all steering should be initiated with the lower part, especially on toe side turns. Spread those knees, dig that edge and carve away.

Awesome Video! Looking like your doing great Gill! I will definitely try some of these out when I next get on the snow. Something that really helped me to get those topside turns was to try and rotate/twist my front knee inwards and down towards the snow to initiate that topside turn. And another little drill that seemed to help was to put my back hand behind my back before the turn to try and reduce upper body counter-rotation. :)

During my lessons I kept mentioning Kevin's advice and my various instructors were telling me no to this and no to that, mostly regarding the hands. His leg position, hips and shoulder position is perfect though, and I reckon that is what the hand thing is attempting to achieve. We were "made" to do something similar with a ski pole across our hips, it just keeps you inline with the board all of the time. As long as you're having fun on the slopes, let the skiers worry about being pedantic about form :D

Hi Gill & Kevin! Thanks for making these videos that are both instructional and interesting. I was curious how much time do you spend planning, recording/filming and editing a video like this one? Did you use a drone for some of these shots? I love the perspective. Thanks!

Hey, Kevin! I'm struggling with my heel-to-toe turns. I can't probably do them without speed checks before turning( I hope you have some advices for me, how to fix that. Thank you in advance, your videos are awesome!
@itskeirashorts4520
@itskeirashorts4520 6 лет назад
Jumbo I think nearly everyone at first has the heel to toe edge fear, is it going to come round or not & then you bail out of it. The simple way I learnt was as you come from your heel edge & and start to come straight with your board, look up the mountain ⛰ trust me it works. It’s a simple little thing that does work. Even if you come to far round it’s no problem. So when you come from your heel edge to your toe edge get your friend to tell you look up the mountain. Good luck and enjoy.
@adamcross4946
@adamcross4946 6 лет назад
Try making the turn and then traversing across the mountain for a bit to control your speed and then leaning forward and getting into the next turn, hope this helps!

0:35 She is counter rotating her turns. In USA youre using different names. Look what shes doing during toe edge turn. It's a one of the biggest mistakes. You should only use it while doing some tricks like for ex. shifty. TBH the 1st and 2nd tips are just basics of different turns technique. 3rd is a big mistake. Back hand should be in one line with your upper body. She's just waving back and forward. In some cases it can make a counter rotation and it's harder to make a smooth turn.
