I nature journal outside every Saturday when it’s not too hot. I also take a lot of reference photos to use for my travel sketchbook, and for rapidly capturing animal poses and flight sequences. I love the idea of your flower press. I may need to try that.

I love the idea of using those large paper clips that you're using to keep your pages from turning. I'll give that a shot and probably an extra set for my hiking bag. Now I also have a use for my empty fillable pens. I never considered using them for watercolors. All I used one for was bleach on an ink spot.

I don’t specifically nature journal (I sketch whatever catches my eye whether natural or man made) but I do enjoy sketching outside. I almost always take a photo before I start. You never know when you might have to stop so it’s nice to have a photo to be able to be able to finish it at home if necessary. When I stop, I also often take a photo holding up the sketchbook in front of the scene too. It’s like proof it was done outside hahaha, and if it’s an unfinished sketch, it records how much was done outside before finishing later.

I use photos many times because my mom, my adventure buddy, is not able to walk/hike/stand outside so we sit in our car or sit at pavilions and picnic tables when the skeeters aren’t awful. Photos help because I wouldn’t be able to get up close as you do except on rare occasions. I sometimes see things and have no pics to show for it so I go to different online sites and books I’ve collected and use those just to get my observations down onto paper. I think if you aren’t selling your drawings and sketches it doesn’t matter what you use, except I do believe some natural elements belong where they’re found. We have a trillium spot and I wouldn’t dream of taking those flowers, but chicory and Queen Anne’s lace, etc I will pick a small sprig and do as you do, preserving as people have for thousands of years. Thanks for all your ideas! I do wish you’d do a post on choosing and using specific colors because I somehow cannot get them right and yours are terrific. Mine are often too dark or the colors too near each other and don’t come out as pretty and natural looking as yours do. HELP! 🦋
@mynaturediaries4402
@mynaturediaries4402 3 дня назад
That totally works and thanks for sharing how you nature journal. I will try to include more tips about colors. I use one small palette and mix all my colors from it. Also, for depth I paint from light to dark…contrast helps create depth in a painting. Thanks so much for watching and sharing 😊🌼

I have "A Practical Guide For The Amateur Naturalist" by Gerald Durrell. I've loved that book since I was little. But like what you said about reference photos versus the old approach of capturing and potentially killing the subject--be happy that you can take a photo or some video. I have a beetle collection from when I worked in a forest entomology lab, and I'm fascinated by historical techniques for preserving specimens (whole creature or things like plastering tracks), but it's a lot of work and even with plants I usually want to leave it be. I'm okay limiting my methodical collection to writing, art, and photos, and limiting physical collecting to whatever I randomly do.

I love plein air sketching and occasionally I will also do a watercolor wash of my sketch. I do buildings, trees and other vegetation. Haven’t done insects so far but who knows. Nature sketching is a great way to get outdoors, get some fresh air and sunshine, and generally actually see what is around you.

All great tips! I have been journaling outside more this summer to learn about the herbs in my garden. When the weather is so nice, I like being out in the breeze (and the shade!). It's important to note how sketching outside makes you feel because you will remember that, maybe even more than the facts about the plants. It also helps me to get the page done, whereas, indoors sometimes I get distracted by all the chores! Either way, having a mix of both outdoors and indoors is a very enjoyable sketching experience!

@mynaturediaries4402
@mynaturediaries4402 День назад
Thank you 🌼 Watercolor can be frustrating to learn especially water control. Remember that you can take off most paint with a clean damp brush. If it’s too thick you can use a clean brush to lift the color. I also sometimes dab off a little bit of color on a tissue before I paint if you think it’s too much. Hope you keep trying because overall it’s so much fun! 😊🌼
