Join me as I nature journal my discoveries through drawings, paintings, watercolor, pen and ink. Making a nature diary is a beautiful and creative way to make art and I will be sharing my tips as well!
My Nature Diaries is my all time favourite YT platform. I have learned a heap and get a lot of enjoyment from watching. It has created a new awareness of what is growing wherever I happen to be. The wild flowers in South Africa are of course different so I have a lot fo learn. Thank you so much ❤
You are welcome and I’m so glad to hear that the videos are helpful in any way! South Africa sounds like a beautiful and amazing place to discover and explore…thanks again for watching 😊🌼
Thank you for sharing your talent. I started a nature journal and slso copied some onfo from my reference nook but thought yhat eas cheating. I was so glad to see you fo the same thing. Your videos sre very relaxing and informative. Love them.
Thank you! Glad you feel better about copying information into your journal. It’s one of the reasons I nature journal…to learn about the world around me while making art. We can always add our own observations to what we discover in books. I hope you make MANY nature journals and THANKS for watching 😊🌼
Great ideas for the journals. I will try adding an envelope to the back (with the folded paper) and the post it notes. So simple but so effective! Thank you
Thank you for the tips, I especially like the template idea and the pen loop. I wasn't even aware "they" make them, but I certainly could. Are there specific field guides you have that you find especially helpful?
@@cindyn628 You are welcome and glad if anything helps😊 I use an app on my phone called “plant.net” to identify whatever I find and then use local field guides to make sure it’s the correct plant/flower. I like field guides specific to my state (Ohio) and /or region. My video on “7 Drawing Tips“ has one of my favorite field guides and I also show a few more in my “Basics of Nature Journaling” Thanks so much for watching 🌸🌿😊
Thank you for suggesting to trace the objects and practice. I often hear that tracing is not proper but you are right, we are not professional artists, we are people who love nature and want to record our experiences. That can relieve a lot of stress , pressure and frustration when someone is just starting out. I have been off and on drawing for a little over a year now and get quite frustrated drawing when I can’t get it right. So thank you for suggesting tracing can help.
Oh so glad! Yes, nature journaling can be fun and beautiful no matter our art skills! I want to make a future video giving more ideas about to journal without drawing 😊🌿🌼
Great ideas! I am beginning my journey of nature journaling. So these ideas will be useful as I begin. Thank you! I can’t wait to begin. I will be making my journal from scratch with some fantastic sketch paper I found at a second hand store.
Your work is very inspirational. It's summer, in sunny South Africa. I'd love to try my hand at natural journalling. Looks like super fun. Wishing you a beautiful day.
Thank you! Sounds like perfect weather and I hope you do try nature journaling…such a fun way to learn about nature AND you can experiment with art. Thanks so much for watching and commenting 😊🌿
Just lovely - I like your style of nature journaling. Beautiful. I like the background wash idea. I was thinking of using a Medieval Illumination script as the first letter at the top of the page - maybe switch off to the Celtic animal alphabet - just to make it special. Flower press - absolutely. Paintings and photographs. Mine will be mostly about our big garden and the rather abundant wildlife in the small habitat my neighbor and I have created for the wildlife. Seasonal observations, interesting quotes, poems, gardening ideas and tips, thoughts ... clippings, prints from books or Pinterest. or the web. I'm planning to journal whenever I can, so there will pages with simple quick entries but I plan on one lovely art page every month or maybe split it into two journals, one a working one and one more fanciful - we'll see if I'm even inspired to keep up with it. Yours is truly inspirational - I think I want something reminiscent of the Nature Journal by the Edwardian Lady Edith Holden.
Thank you! Sounds like you have lots of amazing creative ideas…hope you will make your journal(s) too. I have found nature journaling to be highly “addictive!” 😅 Thanks so much for watching and commenting 🌼🌸🌿
Awesome! I use a product called Mod Podge (the archival kind- link in the description) to add the dried flowers/leaves to my journals. This should preserve them as I use 3 coats to cover them with. Thanks so much for watching 😊🌼
I have been creating nature journals for a few years and am interested in your adding new layouts to help make the pages different. Love the travel flower press and midge podging the specimens onto the page.
What a beautiful page! The Queen Ann's Lace has such beautiful details that are so airy and tender. I enjoyed you using the Mixed Media very much and think it is a perfect addition to the nature journal, especially the organic crinkled paper. I had watched you add a little pull-out book last night but am not sure I remember which post it was in. Would you kindly remind me of the title of it please. I will definitely try to make this little book and see me using it in other situations as well. So cute! 💚
Thank you so much! So glad you liked the painting and layout! The video you are asking about is called “Add this interactive journal to your nature journal.” Thank you for watching 😊🌸
I found your layout tool very smart and helpful. Often a large, blank area feels overwhelming to decide how to compose your subject and make it pleasing to the eye. Once again, I am so glad I found you here on RU-vid and will gladly take in all you tips and techniques to improve my watercolor journaling. Thanks so much for sharing, ☺
I love Black-eyed Susan. They have such a happy face :) I do have a question, when you are out and about, do you capture with a camera first then come back into the studio to compose your pages? This 2 page spread really tells a story, love this!
@@twisteddyekitchenmyfiberjo4577 I like them too! I definitely captured this all on video and photos and made it all in studio. I journal this way a lot especially if we are biking or hiking…I’m doing well to get photos as no one likes to stop on the trail😅
Beautiful page! I love the first flowers in spring and the one's you picked are wonderful. I just found you last night on RU-vid and can't stop watching all your post. You a a very talented artist an I admire you work very much. You have inspired my to start my own nature journal. I think I start with the Japanese Anemone that is blooming right now. Thank so much for sharing your talent!! Sincerely, Fran from KY
Awe! Thank you so much 😊 I super appreciate your encouragement and am so glad you are enjoying the videos! Especially am glad to hear that you are starting your own journal and Japanese Anenomes are a beautiful flower to draw and paint! Thanks so much for watching 😃🌸
What a splendid way of showing off the fall leaves with this amazing technique. I really loved the idea of a shadow, gave the leaves more "Life like" appearance.
@@twisteddyekitchenmyfiberjo4577 Thank You! It’s kind of like making your own coloring book too…and aren’t the shadows a game changer?! Such a simple way to upgrade a painting! Thanks so much for watching 😊🍂
I enjoy all three types of nature journaling, but unlike many jpurnalers, i carry on drawing in winter and when it's raining. If the weather is really dreadful (and where i live, it often is) i may journal from a window, but i enjoy the challenge of finding a subject on even the bleakest of days. It helps me learn to see detail, too.
Nancy - I really enjoy your channel! I would love to be able to get out in nature and do some journaling, but because of major health restrictions, I am limited to my very small, very limited backyard. I am able to take drives in the area and do a lot of trees from my car. I go where I can drive to and then sit in a camp chair. However, I don't have any "guilt" feelings at all about finding photos online or in books that I can use as references. I try to find ones that are in the public domain and always give photographer credit when available. And here in North Florida, we only have 2 seasons: hot and not as hot! 😂 It's a good thing I love doing lots of live oak trees! 🤭
Thank you! Also, appreciate you sharing how you nature journal and have adapted to fit your lifestyle. It’s so fun making art and glad you are enjoying it…thanks so much for watching 😊🌼
