My new small home studio is coming. It's as big (small) as before but has a few nicer touches. This one has a proper roof and walls that will actually keep the rain out, for example!

I’m only just beginning to clear a space in my garage for this purpose, and at this moment it’s a LOT messier than your studio. So I have an even bigger challenge! Thank you for your enthusiasm Gavin!! - and great clips!

Won't somebody think of the cat! It loved making impromptu appearances in the small home studio. I wish GH, Mrs H and the cat were moving next door to me. Gavin's Adorama videos represent some of my favourite viewing in the entire history of You Tube.

That's my Lenovo Miix Tablet PC, sadly discontinued but a Microsoft Surface Pro would do just as well. The software is the free stuff from Olympus (Capture and Workspace)

Great ideas as always for us non-superstar photographers. (I kinda felt for your model during the smoke machine episode. You did have gas masks for everyone, right...? Maybe in the outtakes 😉) I can't understand why anyone would give any of your videos a thumbs down. Good Luck in your new home!
fantastic enjoyed this and could almost taste the smoke at the end - in my home studio its hard to get it out of the flat afterwards. Look forward to seeing your next video and your new adventure at the new manor!
You can meter the backlights but smoke will always ruin your best intentions. Smoke can be thick one second and gone the next, so I tend to adjust my backlights on the fly.
Hey Gav ,you have just helped me to work on getting the negative space in a image that has a messy background. I am talking about the second image when you made the background go black. I do have a question though, and that is if you are on location and you only have speedlites how would you make it a high key image please? Can you make a video or do you have a video on doing that? Hi Jorge. I was in manual flash. iTTL won't be affected by a softbox but the white and black backgrounds might and shooting into the flash can be unpredictable with TTL.
Hi Ricardo. I use TetherTools cables (links in the video description) and a Lenovo Miix Win10 Tablet PC. I run Olympus Capture & Workspace software to import and display the images.
I tried making background dark to take a photo of orquids indoor but it didn’t work, it was a while ago so I don’t remember settings. But my flash and modifier were small (9X9), does that makes a difference? I did use a 90mm lens. Thanks
That's Earth Tap as used by UK electricians. It has two important jobs... First, it stops the AF focus beam accidently coming on a ruining slow shutter speed shots (learned that the hard way). Second, in room full of other similar transmitters (eg at a trade show or workshop) I can quickly see which is mine!
There's one more option when the studio/photo shoot location has a bunch of clutter. Make use of it! Use the clutter as a set filled with props for the model to do whatever with.
Goodbye small home studio, you will be missed. Just remember, it's not the studio, it's the photographer. So if Sam takes the photographer when she moves, everything will be fine.
Excellent question Anthony. The long answer is have a go yourself and you'll instantly become a better photographer! Short answer (spoiler alert) it would make the background smaller 😲
