hey, i using h1n, h5 and f1 - all works for me. No battery issues on f1 found (no capsule used), frame delay issue - solve on post production sync.F1 is good for field recordings with form factor, box, and microphone fixed jack. it seems is good recorder while you using it 3 years :) thx

I was actually considering the F1 to record sound effects or foley as you referred to it, I have an H5 currently but I would enjoy the smaller form factor. I recently purchased the F6 for actual field recording (dialogue) and I came to the realization that I could just use that with a separate microphone to record sound samples. I didn't think about the battery drain on the F1 due to the need for phantom power. I guess my best bet is to just use my F6 with my Deity V-Mic D3 Pro instead of an F1 with different capsules

Oh man. We need know about hiss noise, and the background music makes a great sabotage.

I was looking for a demo of the pickup pattern and found your video. I appreciate you sharing your experience as it helps. My own experience so far is that Zoom exists in the world where it’s priced for tight budgets and can produce great audio but it’s not the most convenient. Like the screen. By the way, what Sennheiser is that? Is it self powered or need phantom? I’ve not really researched them but I should.
@stephanferdinand

Sennheiser XS1 it's $50 USD and it is a dynamic, so no phantom power needed. Yea I am done with zoom now. Sold everything and I am happy now :) Thank you for your comment Rein Quest.

do you know what the screw size on the bottom of the f1 is? That shock mount looks shitty and I would perfer to mount the body via screws to a pistol grip for more stability
@stephanferdinand
@stephanferdinand 3 года назад
Not sure, looks like 4 or 5 mm (metric fine tread in any case) and definitely not standard audio equipment screw.

I have been eyeing this kit for a while, but you made me cautious. 10-15 minutes on alkaline batteries? Zoom specifies something like 6 hours on NiMH with the SGH-6 microphone. Do they overstate it by this amount?
@stephanferdinand

I don't know. Living in Costa Rica and frequently traveling to remote areas I keep it simple with Alkaline Batteries that I can easily get. And a lot of locations do not have electrical power, so charging is not an option, maybe not very ambient friendly but I just swapped them like bullets in a magazine. These days I use a Sennheiser 416 microphone direct connected to a Sony Z150. Sometimes Lewitt 040 match pair too. The Sennheiser 416 blows SSH/SGH - 6 out of the water for mono and the Lewitt 040 has far superior stereo. And the camera battery powers everything for 2 days straight. By the way, the zoom F1 with the XLR module does not provide phantom power, you will be stuck with lesser microphones. Thank you for your question Krisztián. I am glad to help when I can. Let me know what you end up doing and how it works out for you. Best regards, Stephan

@@stephanferdinand Cheers Stephan. Costa Rica is a beautiful place, I have had the luck to spend a short holiday there. As for batteries, alkaline holds longer than NiMH, I just use NiMH to save on costs, but alkaline has the edge in capacity and also it is pretty simple to buy in case you are out of charge. I have a few microphones, including a Sennheiser MKE600 shotgun which can be used either from phantom or a single AA battery. I got a Tascam DR10x recorder from second hand; it is meant to be used with dynamix XLR mics, as it does not provide phantom either. Now it seems to work fine with the MKE600 as well. Besides I have some other recorders, but I wanted something stand alone, to avoid cabling. The F1 looks versatile, especially as I already have some compatible capsules, but f battery goes down so fast, that kills the purpose
@stephanferdinand
@stephanferdinand 3 года назад
@@ww1www I have not tested the MKE600 but having several Sennheisers both mine and my wife's I will make the bolt statement that Zoom equipment is rubbish next to it. What are you trying to record If I may ask ? We could do an exchange I can send you the F1 + accessories and you can sent me something else. Looking for a large condenser mic or a ribbon mic, tube amplifier, autio interface, etc... I am all ears if we can exchange things that would help us both out.

What do you think of Zoom M3? Is it sound great if you talk behind the camera, if not, what solution it will be, M4 with a 90 degree adaptor to plug a pencil condenser with it facing backward?
@stephanferdinand
@stephanferdinand 4 месяца назад
Hi, sorry I missed your message. To talk from behind the camera I usually just plug a Lavalier to the camera mic input. That is all I really need.

Well I don't know what your use case / needs for it are. If you like to explain I can give you my humble opinion, but in the end I am not an expert. Just a regular guy trying to make some half decent videos :)

You know you can get an extender for the accessories?
@stephanferdinand
@stephanferdinand 3 года назад
Yes I considered buying one but that defeats the purpose as I can just wire a shotgun mic to a mixer or camera and record directly. And that would give me auto levels, etc... The shotgun mic is a joke. Some time ago I went to a music store where the staff is actually helpful and they where kind enough to connect my F1 to a mixer and a Sennheisser MKH-416. I walked out the store with the mixer and the mic. There is just no comparison. And if I ever run into relying on lavaliers again, I would pretty much get a Sennheisser wireless system. Yes I am a fanboy of that brand now. It is SO good! These days I use the F1 with a lavalier only and it's ok.... until you hear a ME-4 and it's amazing clarity and noise rejection and then you are sold but that mic costs more than the entire F1 :) You know the saying: buy nice or buy twice. And Zoom is twice. My problem with their products (as most other brands) is that the engineering you get does not stand up to the amazing advertising they made. Loadatat thank you very much for your kind comment. Most appreciated it.

@@stephanferdinand it's a bit unfair comparing a shotgun mic that costs 10x the price to the zoom
@stephanferdinand
@stephanferdinand 3 года назад
@@tomfurstyfield Yes you are right on that point! but it is also unfair from the manufacturer to create advertising that is on pair of a real microphone. "The F1 Field Recorder + Lavalier Mic completes your video’s story by providing outstanding audio no matter where your production takes you." -taken from Zooms website- "Outstanding audio" that is a very very good lie. Reality is the F1 is an entry level recorder with and entry level lav. And the capsules are entry level mics too. But Zoom is NOT stating that. They are saying it's awesome and it is just not. If you own it, enjoy it and make the best out of it. With a lot of fussing around it gets the job done. If you are just considering buying it then well, I don't know your use case. Maybe it is the right tool for you. About budget: 2k in quality equipment that makes you happy is investment and 200 $ in garbage is waist. About the hobby: my hobby is not dealing with equipment, it's making creative short films for FUN, where fun is keyword. Thank you again for starting a conversation I am enjoying it :)

If you still have the F1 and you want to use it, maybe get the Zoom ECM-6 Extension Cable. That way you can mount the microphone out of frame and have 6 meters worth of working room to adjust the mic before you set the recorder out of shot (Just an idea for you to maybe love your purchase a bit more)

Thank you Roean, that is excellent advice. I sold it, though. Now very happy with Sennheiser mics into Sony professional camcorders. A world appart. But yes you are right. Thanks you for taking the time to write a suggestion.
