I made my first mile shot (and hit) with 300 PRC. What a great cartridge. I don't claim to be a long-range pro, I had a factory rep there from Barrett walking me through it all, but it was still fun!
it's my understanding that a match grade barrel that's been hand lapped doesn't need the barrel break in procedure that was used. for a factory rifle, it definitely helps. I've noticed a difference. but both my benchmark barrels shot great right off the start, they did pick up some speed after some rounds. But that wasn't from cleaning. that was from shooting. Great shooting and i'm looking forward to more content.love that 6.5 PRC. Love my 6.5 Sherman shortmag more :)
Great rifle, great series, great shooting. Awesome. I would recommend, when shooting for groups, to not lift your head from the comb in between shots. Load and cycle with your head "in the scope" It has helped me. Thanks for this series. Wish I had the tools to build my own.
It must be quite a satisfying feeling building that from start to finish. It's a pleasure getting to watch each step along the way - thanks for allowing me to live vicariously through you and your shop! lol
Good Video! I did a barrel break in with my Savage 12 LRP in 6.5 Creedmoor when I first bought it. Did the shoot once, clean, shoot twice, clean, etc. The factory barrel always collected copper and would use CR-10 to break out the copper here and there, but it still always collected a lot of copper either way. Shot that barrel out and put a Criterion on it and didn't do a break in. Cleaned it when I got the barrel installed and then shot 500 rounds through it. Ran three patches through it with Hoppes 9 and it was clean as a whistle with no copper fouling. I think it goes to show that a hand lapped barrel like a Criterion or any good match grade barrel doesn't need a break in. I think cleaning does the opposite and the more you clean the worse it is on a barrel.
Great job with this build! I love your attention to detail. Gunsmithing demands this level of detail and you obviously have the skill and knowledge to put together an accurate rifle. I have been turning my own barrels for years for both competition and hunting and absolutely love it when a new rifle comes together and performs well in the field. Love your channel and the way you present the information. Keep up the great work.
Great videos and excellent presentation. Have a Ruger Precision in 300 PRC but with winter approaching (actually it is here) it will be a spring break in and long range practice. We have both a 1,000 yd and 1 mile range at our farm. Purchased the 225 grain Hornady factory ammo as well for now.
That is a beautiful firearm. It’s watching things like this that inspire me to learn more about firearms and how to make them. Thank you for all the information and inspiration.
Shooter7point62 “I’m trusting barrel makers here” yes they want you to buy more barrels so they tell you to clean and break in your barrels. I used to do this with every new barrel but now I no longer do this after seeing results not cleaning nearly as often.
So I spoke to the guys over at the Blaser, Mauser and Sauer factory in Germany a couple of years ago, and they seem to be in your camp Shooter7point62. Their engineers said that it makes no sense to try and break in a barrel with the "first shots" because by the time you get the rifle, the barrel has seen multiple projectiles already during their testing of the barrel in their quality control and legal obligations like proofing. So they say that with their barrels, once you get it you load it and shoot.
I believe barrel break-in is personal choice. Barrel manufacturers recommend different ways, top shooters in competitions recommend different ways, some recommend none. It's all up to you in the end. I wouldn't mind doing a side be side comparison one of these days.
Nice rifle!! Just wanting to give my opinion in the comments. First, I’m a LR shooter and have been for the past 30 years. I shoot and study ballistics 3-5 days a week, I retired at age 45. Studying ballistics is what I do. Ok, in my opinion, anytime you have to correct the elevation to compensate for the fall of gravity, I consider this long range when using today’s modern rifle systems. 4-6 hundred yards is long range. When one’s bullet is subsonic, I consider this extreme long range. Way to go on the shooting!!!! Just found your channel and will be looking for updates on your rifle.
WV Long Shooter have you been to Storm Mountain Training Center in Elk Garden? Talk to Rod....he’s got some good courses up there if you want to stretch out some range...
Gorgeous rifle excellent craftsmanship I was thinking 300 PRC what's the effective range on big game as well on targets and say 300 PRC vs. 300 win mag thx keep up the great videos.
I was going to go with a custom 300 PRC, but instead opted for a factory Ruger Precision rifle for just over $1400. I did a break-in of 1 shot clean, 2 shots clean, 3 shots clean, 4 shots clean, and my 5 shot group was .38" @ 100 yards with 4 going in to .26" with Hornady factory 225gr ELD-M.
Awesome Gavin! I will say... from Shooting the 6.5 PRC and 300 PRC Ruger RPR... the 300 was almost more pleasant. Ruger has a MASSIVE brake on it that is tunable... Very effective!
@@Ultimatereloader Here is some footage of me shooting it at the media event, STARTING at 1k. lol. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cIPzGvTEtyU.html
Im really excited to see what you come up with in all these tests and your final conclusions. I really want a 30 cal magnum ELR/hunting rifle that is non belted and the 300 PRC and 300 RUM are my short list.
That is one super bad ass nice gun..I love it. One question..Re; bubble level on Scope ring cap..Why did you go with a top mount level instead of side mount level? I have to take my eye off the target to check a Top side Bubble Level? However I dont not have to lose my Cheek weld or take my eye off target with my side view bubble level? Gavin that is the nicest gun I think Ive seen..Damn I love that modular stock with a built in Arca rail..
Hi Gav, Great video as usual. I am so excited for these two builds you have going. This build in 300 PRC is my ultimate and I feel the excitement you have through your videos as it makes me excited to see the build and progress every time you upload. Awesome build, awesome info and great MOA right from the start. Keep up the awesome vids and products.
Nice build. In fact, I'm shooting with great results out my custom Alamo Precision/Defiance DT action/ Bartlein heavy varmint profile 28" barrel in my 300 PRC Rifle; the 230 Berger Hybrid. I've taken several ELR matches already from 1000-2000 yards with great and consistent results Good luck and enjoy your channel.
That’s a sweet piece of kit!!! You better start working out lol. 20+ lbs to lug around. I would also enjoy seeing it shot in it’s lightest configuration. No weight in the stock.
Boober stay tuned he is building a hunting version as well. Is is based on a 300 RUM donor he said he will do a work up on the 300 RUM to directly compare it to the 300 PRC.
Nothing like the ping of steel. Dead center just makes it that much better. Hope you can drive up the mountain because I wouldn't want to hump a 24 pound rifle plus ammo and gear up there. :D
Just was doing load development on a buddy’s new rifle in a mdt acc chassis and I was getting left to right group shift also. I bedded it an that went away. Made a 1 moa rifle a .5moa rifle. Rifle is a Curtis vector, proof carbon 6mm creedmoor, in mdt acc.
@gavintoobe I bed the action to the chassis. Mainly the recoil lug but did around the rear action screw also. I built a “wall” with play dough in front of the recoil lug. The acc chassis doesn’t have a trough so had to do something to contain the acraglass. My guess is that the round action was turning under recoil. The recoil lug doesn’t have anything on the sides to keep the action from twisting. The barrel is a 7 twist. What it needs is set screws on both sides of the recoil lug.. just my thoughts. They are only my opinion. I appreciate your precision work by the way!
Great stuff! Really interested in the load work up. I'm curious how important neck tension and seating depth will be for this cartridge, especially if vld/eld or similar style bullets are used.
U have got the best videos I have seen. U shoot nice top notch equipment. U should do a 30 Sherman mag. What are your views on 300 prc vs 300 rum and 300 win mag.
Very interested in the 300RUM to 300PRC, to see what results you get or just have my REM700LR 300RUM action reworked for a Wyatts box mag and new barrel? I like and appreciate your methodology, where it pertains to reloading/ballistics/smithing!
What are the coordinates to the location you are shooting from? At the equator Earth is spinning counter clockwise at around 1039 MPH, so at the *45 Lat. the rotation is around 520 MPH which is equivalent 750 fps. Let us say all the following scenario targets are placed at 1000 yrds. Can you shoot to the north, impact the target then shoot south and impact the target without much windage adjustment? I ask because when you shoot north the Earth's rotation is coming from right to left but when you shoot south the rotation is from left to right. Can you shoot to the east, make impact then shoot west, make impact with out a whole lot of elevation adjustment? I ask because shooting east the Earth's rotation is coming towards you, when you shoot west the earths rotation is going away. What about diagonal directions NW, SE, then NE,SW, how much windage and elevation adjustment do you make? I ask as these diagonal directions NW, SE and then NW,SE are completely opposite. One last question, What formula do you use to figure in for the coriolis effect? Just a lot of critical thinking here. BTW them were some awesome groups. thank you for the uploads and in advance thank you for answering my book of questions. be well my friend.
How high are your scope rings on this gun? I’m building almost the exact same gut just with a defiance action and I’m looking to keep the scope fairly tight to the barrel for a clean look. The scope I’m putting on it also has a 34mm tube and 56 bell so very comparable
Wow, Nice rifle! Im on the fence between a borden mountaineer, an impact precision 737 or a kelbleys prometheus action, its similar to the atlas action. Im interested in your opinion on the kelbley.. is it as good as the other top brands I listed? What do you think of its TG ejector? I noticed you were hand chambering the rounds, did you have loading issues?? Please respond, I really do follow your channel, thankyou in advance.
@@Ultimatereloader As I am sure you will know, during the daytime, in optimal conditions it is tough to tell the difference, BUT in questionable lighting, such as early morning or very late in afternoon or before sunset, it is very much a great scope. The glass clarity is superb. Also am a fan that the scope weights fairly little. FFP is a win and am a huge fan of the turret system they have on it. The zero stop is also fantastic. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ndBx9m8yhHI.html
I looked through my friend's Mark 6. I still curse him for it. The glass is incredible. It ranked in the top 10 in the Accurate Shooter test of scopes that started at $1500. A NightForce won beating scopes that cost almost twice as much. Gavin you would appreciate the details of the testing regiment. Definitely your level of detail was used.
Love all the info. Tho id like to see more shooting. Very little shooting to ever see on the channel. Videos feel like commercials. With that being said i am still fan of the channel.
Thanks for the feedback. Lots more shooting coming- I'm investing a LOT in infrastructure in order to make the shooting more light-weight for me (that means more shooting time on camera). ShotMarker for instance has made shooting groups on camera orders of magnitude more quick to capture and produce (I used to setup a camera at 100 yards for all shooting of groups- VERY time consuming). I'm also putting in ShotMarker at the 1000 yard range here at Ultimate Reloader. Still, shooting 1000 yards is a full day of work getting prepared, hiking to the ridgeline, shooting/filming, hiking back. And then there's the video to edit, the photos to edit, etc. etc. Most people have no idea what it really takes to capture these stories (and that's fine). To make a living YouTubing (for gun channels esp.) you have to publish every other day. It's extremely difficult and complicated. All that said, thanks for subscribing/watching/etc.
Great Video. Will the rifle go up for sale if so let me know I'm shooting a Weatherby Accumark 6.5-300 Weatherby Mag Love it. Thanks keep up the great work.
Hey Gavin. I've got this savage elite precision in 300prc. 30 inch, 1 in 8.5 twist tube. Absolute tac driver with the factory 225gr eldm but I've got a few hundred 250 grain atips I wanna load for it. Got any tips for a starting load? I'm thinking about hodgdon us869. Have you any experience with that powder in magnum cartridges? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
I am not sure what your engineering history is but I am a mechanical engineer to trade following you built I clearly follow everything you say. I wish in the uk we were able to use our own skills to build our own rifles start to finish instead of having to go through the hassle involved as you say through the build it's the challenge of getting things to within 0.0002" and alot of people will not understand the satisfaction when complete knowing from start to finish it's yours especially after you get your load developed and its single hole groupings 😁 Do you think the 300prc has any advantage over 300rum or you think is a hornady marketing technique to break the market as the 6.5cm took of ? Ps I also run a delta Stryker on my tikka tac A1
Hi, Question for you. I want to get a tikka t3x and drop it into the mdt acc in 6.5. Do you think it will be as good or better then the tac a1? Only asking as here in Aus it will be about 1k cheaper.
@@GTRSniper1 I have 3 tikka rifles One tikka tac a1 One tikka t3 One tikka t3x Now they are all great rifles hands down my tac a1 is most accurate but I have spent the most time on load development as it's my target gun other 2 are hunting rifles. My tacA1 is constantly shooting 5 shot groups at 1 ragged hole at 100 if I do my part when confirming zero. My other 2 will hold 1" groups at 100 with any ammo including cheap stuff my hunting loads are around the 3/4" but that perfect for hunting. The t3 and tex are just the same rifle changeable grips that's it. The difference between the 2 are as follows Tac A1 has 24" barrel Phosphate coated action and barrel Bigger bolt knob 10 shot metal mag Factory threaded barrel Comes with muzzle brake. Of course ar15 compatible chassis. Picatinny rail fitted Now I looked onto getting a super varmint myself and dropping it into a mdt stock my problem was they were all 20" barrels and was a 6 month wait on the 24 and it did not come threaded. And in the new chassis then needs new magazine's I think the AI ones fitted that style of chassis. The time I took all that into account I was around £200 cheaper buying the tacA1. the tacA1 stock its rock solid so many mounting options. I dont have any experience on mdt chassis apart from they look nice lol Now I am not sure on availability down under but the tikka ctr is the same rifle as the tacA1 in different stock same action bolt mags etc
