300WSM - F-Open

First real outing with my new 300WSM. Previously sighted in at 50 metres at an indoor range to purely establish a wind zero. Had a rough idea of velocity so threw together two loads to run at 600 metres. Stage 1 shot a 60.8 (60.10 max possible), grouping about 3.7 inches. This stage was tighter, shooting a 66.9 (66.11 max possible) and grouping at 3 inches. Targets are electronic Hexta targets. I took 1st place in both stages and the overall aggregate for the day (scored a Christmas ham and turkey for my trouble!). You can also see rain start to fall towards the end of the shoot too.
Hardware consists of:
Stock - McMillan Kestros ZR fitted with RAD II system
Action - Borden BRMXD, left bolt, right port, left eject, 20moa rail and fully DLC coated
Trigger - TriggerTech Diamond
Barrel - Krieger, 4 groove, 10 twist finished at 31 and fitted with an Ezell barrel tuner
Scope - March Highmaster 10-60x56 with MTR-1 reticle illuminated with Accuracy 1st bubble level
Rings - ARC M10 high
Front Rest - SEB Mini with Rodzilla top and Bryan Blake stainless feet
Rear - Lenzi LR bag on custom plate

Matt Paroz at LRP Solutions did the work. Cannot recommend him highly enough - he's doing another barrel for me now.

I like the .280 AI better, wish I had a rifle in that cartridge, for deer, pigs, goats, foxes in New England NSW. Is it hard getting ammo in .280 AI in N.S.W?

I had a 280AI for F-Open prior to this rifle being built - it's a good cartridge for F-class and Peterson Cartridge Company now makes 280 and 280AI brass. You can't buy factory ammo for a 280AI - it's a wildcat so it's a handloading option only. You're easiest option would be to do a straight 280 if you're not handloading.

Very light cheek pressure, I like to get away with as light cheek pressure as possible as I want my head to be floating behind the rifle - also doesn't fatigue your cheek muscles and eyes as much.

Hello Kris, how´s the recoil compared to 280AI and 284 Winchester ? And how much of the felt recoil is mitigated by the RAD ll ? Kind Regards, Christian

I'd say about 25-30% of the recoil is mitigated by the RAD II system. You can see the rifle has a sharp recoil impulse so while it pushes back, all the 'sting' so to speak is absorbed by the RAD - so you don't feel it as much as it seems you would so what is transferred through your shoulder feels more like a 280AI to me. I have found it quite easy to adjust to so far.

@@kriswilson5400 Another Question: Can you tell me the Reamer Specs ? Freebore and Neck Diameter ? Did you plan to use a specific bullet or for a specific range of bullet weight ?

@@chrisz6918 Exact reamer specs I don't know, my gunsmith has 3 reamers for the 300WSM - I went with a .343 no turn neck so I've got plenty of neck clearance - about 6 thou. It's throated for 215gr hybrids which is what I am primarily shooting. I also have 220gr hybrids but will probably save those for the next barrel as I have plenty of 215s on hand. I would also consider trying the 208gr hybrids but that's for another time.
