This west coast video is the best video Everyday Driver has done since Pilgrimage. The sense of adventure was beautifully captured and allowed the viewer to feel like they were along for the ride. The scenic shots were cinematic quality. The long format piece suits your storytelling style and lets us share in your natural humor (plus the occasional breaking into song). There’s an honesty to this video that is such a refreshing contrast to the usual click bait content made by others. The underlying theme of using a car (even a modern classic) for its intended purpose is a timely reminder during a period of escalating vehicle values and an important rebuttal to the misguided urge to stow away our prized possessions. Enjoyment doesn’t come from simply possessing an object, it comes from using that object for its intended purpose. You both have succeeded at doing that here. I think the S15 might give it a run for its money, but they never officially made it to the US, so there's that somewhat expensive problem. I just checked and a fairly clean Spec-R S15 goes for over $40k right now through an import agency, so I guess that's another car I'm never meant to own.
Neither made sense though. Allowing consumption of weed in your private time does not contradict prohibiting using a mobile phone while driving on a public road. And when a cop stops him, he will be stationary. Noone will know his speedometer doesnt work. But we might use his singing to scare russians away.

These are two of my favorite cars! The 928 is one of the best-looking cars of the 80’s and the Z32 300ZX is one of the best of the 90’s! You guys have great taste in cars!

I live in Oregon and have enjoyed a lot of the road seen in this video. My wife has family in New England, most of them located in Maine. There are a lot of gorgeous drives throughout New England. Hope you enjoy your trip!

Thanks for reminding me about this trip. My wife and I did this the opposite direction last June in my 2018 Miata Club. The weather for us was great, so much of the time we had the top down. The six speed manual was so much fun.

Man.. I have a pristine twin turbo 300zx with 50,000 miles and I hate driving it just in case there's a rock or debris or something. I'm a short drive away from the california coast and this video makes me feel like taking it out for a long drive
In a few more decades none of us will be able to drive ICE-based vehicles out on the road any longer. It seems to me that now is the time to be enjoying your beautiful 300zx. Otherwise you're simply keeping it nice for someone else to enjoy later on (or not) before it becomes obsolete.
@VirtualGuth Totally understand your statement but so hoping that you're wrong. Studies show that there's enough fossil fuel to supply the world for the next 500+ years, even at current consumption. Electric vehicles are soulless, like driving a toaster and not without their own set of issues. But until then, we'll continue to enjoy our vehicles as they were meant to be. Hoping that you get all of the pleasure out of yours!
@@patsfan8057 I've been making similar observations in car-related discussion for a little while now. Trust me, it's not that I want to be right in what I say. I'm simply stating what I truly think is the inevitable after doing quite a bit of reading on the subject and talking with a lot of folks, including a lot of people younger than myself, most of which are not car enthusiasts. I have no love for EV's and I don't believe that they'll be the long-term answer to the world's environmental problems (which I do not discount despite having long enjoyed ICE-based vehicles of all different sorts). But it seems clear to me that this is what auto makers have all gotten behind as the next big wave of sustaining their companies in addition to the governments pushing for such change. I responded to your comment because I can understand how you feel. I bought a low-mileage Honda S2000 years ago - not as an investment (car prices were still far from going crazy at the time), but because it was the one car I most wanted to enjoy. My plan was to able to enjoy it for as long as possible, therefore the low-mileage choice. Now I see prices on the rise and I don't enjoy any reluctance that I might feel to drive the car as a result. When all is said and done, I believe that there are going to be a lot of people kicking themselves for not enjoying the cars they so coveted while they still could. I don't want to be among them. There are other ways to grow money besides parking a car and only ever taking it to cars & coffee type events. I'm going to do my best to keep enjoying my ride as was intended and I wish you luck doing the same. Thanks for the conversation.
@@VirtualGuth Yes, so true. There are things going on that are taking our ability to enjoy our cars out of our control, slowly but surely. Wow, S 2000? Always liked those 😊 but I'm a child of the 50s, grew up with muscle cars and hot rods so I drive a Mustang. And totally agree with your observations about using them as intended and not sitting in a hermetically sealed garage waiting for the next bump in value. Those people aren't enthusiasts, just speculators, might as well buy stocks. For the rest of us, you can't take it with you so enjoy it while you can! Cheers!

Put Vaseline on those 30 year old weather stripping seals. Same thing happened on my Supra with the targa top. Vaseline allows the weather stripping to swell just slightly to allow for a better seal.
woah, I have the targa supra too, I should give that a go! It's mostly on either door edge where it meets the rubber that is around the bolt where it likes to like, but even that is mostly after just car washes. As much as I love that targa top, I'm kind of afraid to ever take it off!
@@rushnerd yeah give that a shot, i usually take my targa top off and will put Vaseline on and just leave the targa off overnight. Then the next day tighten everything back on. Depending on how bad your seals are though you might need the rebuild kit.
Go to your local Honda parts department and buy some Shin Etsu grease. I use it on the hardtop weather seals on my MR2. It makes the seals look brand new and plump up a ton
I have the leaking targa supra three! I used the backing of the dynamat to seal up the passenger side but my driver side would pour! I’ll need time to address my driver side and look into this Vaseline trick
@@tnutss Probably just need to shell out for a new seal kit. At a certain point, there's no bringing back perished seals and they just need to be replaced. Luckily, accessibility is much better compared to a retractable hard top, so at least it's only an added expense and not something that requires particular skill.
Good for you guys, great video. Five years ago I bought a 1988 928 S4 in Montreal and drove it back to Calgary AB in 2 1/2 days….approx 3600kms. The first days I was all nerves wondering if the car would make it, the second day I said the hell with it and set the cruise control to 90 mph. It made it no problems and was a great trip.
I absolutely love your take on how these cars need to be driven. In the summer time my daily is a 94 Impala SS. A car that most would relegate to the garage.

Taking your own car on a road trip, I wholeheartedly agree. Buying a car that I love and that is fun to drive.. I don't want to look back on it and say "It got me to work every day". After realizing that, we've been packing it for week long road trips, and it's been great. I don't regret putting a few extra thousand miles on it at all. Those are the good miles. Those are the memories with the car.
Guys, we do longer roadtrips with much cheaper (and more broken) cars on the Balkans, but we just don´t film it. Now I realize how stupid we are, because your content is very entertaining to watch and thank you for those videos!!!
Love that you guys are doing this in the old cars. My only old car road trip was in 2019 when I took my 88 corvette from central Iowa to the tail of the dragon and Cherohala skyway then back. 3 day weekend and while there were some check engine lights, the a/c intermittently worked and in the smokey mountains the oil and coolant temps got a little high, I had a blast! Planning to hit PCH next summer with the MINI I ordered after your JCW video.

This video makes me want to drive my FK8 along this route. Some gorgeous roads here in AZ, too. But no ocean.

I went with my wife a few years back, started in SF and spent 12 days driving to Seattle. We dipped down to Big Sur to start, spent a couple nights in SF a couple in Portland and a couple in Seattle. We went some other spots too, Bend, Crater Lake, Multnomah Falls etc. Went down some coastal dirt roads - off one there was Salmon running up a river and seals catching them. Excellent trip, was in September so thr days were still long and weather nice. Drove through the big Redwood tree. Lots to do on that road trip, 4 days is not nearly enough, even 12 days felt rushed.
The west coast episodes are epic. They brought back some very good memories. In 1978, I did the a Dallas to LA to Vancouver and back through Yellowstone loop. Watching this video makes me want to do it again.

Always love watching the videos on this channel, this video has got to be one of the best yet. Please, anytime you guys make a road trip always consider filming it. People need to see the beautiful scenery and get a sense of the experiences drives like these give can give to the soul. For those who are not fortunate enough to enjoy adventures of their own, the alternative is thru 2 cool guys that just drive real "everyday" sports cars. Keep up the great content!
Another thing I wanted to add, one of the reasons I've enjoyed this channel so much is how you guys are so relatable. Another one I really loved was the video where Todd took his son on a trip in his Elise, it really made me want to do something exactly like it when my son gets a little older.

GREAT VID!!! Use Redline MT90 for the Z32. Been using since 2000. Never an issue on my Z32 or my other manual and auto trans (Redline D4) cars. For decades...
Remembering when my wife and I jumped into our newly bought 1985 Volkswagen Westfalia camper and drove 2100 miles to Cali and up the 1 to Crescent City. All those views and tight windy roads bring me right back. 11 days, 3 gears, no visibility, pounding hearts and sweet memories! Now I've got my eyes on an old 928... Thanks for the trip!
I was looking forward to this episode all day. 8 yrs ago I purchased a ‘87 928S4 in Seattle and made the trip south along the coast to LA and over to AZ in 4 days the car was a beast - comfortable - never put a mile on the ODO as it too was not logging miles. - beautiful drive throughout - only better in a gem of a car that has the power and handling pointing the nose into every bend. - I am so jealous ‘cause living in SFla I can’t make that drive monthly like I would if I lived on the west coast!!!!
Last Monday we got back from the 7 day trip from Reno to Glenwood Springs Co and had a great time!! 2020 stinger GT-line and averaged 32MPG with lots of 80 cruising and 90mpg passing...GT living!
My god that was awesome. Thanks for bringing me along - I'm looking forward to someday getting a money pit that I will equally regret and love at the same time. True automotive enthusiasm and adventure!
Great video. You’ve inspired me to do that route again, once my 2022 GR86 arrives. We did it in 2020 in my 2018 Volvo V90, which was also pretty great.
The 300ZX has plenty of fans. I like both cars quite a bit myself. Either one of these two is far better looking than any car designed in the past couple of decades thanks to increasingly restrictive regulations imo.

SF to Seattle along the coast, I know that drive well and it is truly epic. The curvy roads, the air, the trees, the ocean…EPIC!!! Add the adventure of antique cars and you have a truly spectacular road trip. Should be great to watch. Thanks for bringing us along!
Yup, amazing video, thanks guys!!! Side note for anyone wanting to take this drive, don’t skip the Three Capes Scenic Route south of Tillamook in Oregon. It adds a little time sticking to the coastline but I promise you that the scenery and curves are worth it.
Thanks so very much for taking the effort to create this master piece along the California highway 1 . I traveled this road w my wife some years ago. The memories i have on this lovely coastal road is nothing but a bunch happy events . Their was this lovely couple who ran a road side restaurant along the northern border near Oregon, I never forget how kind they were to us travelers . I pray they are still there to greet all the travelers. We are living in east coast now n hope to travel there again soon thanks to your wonderful clips .

It reminded me of when I was in college and driving my 53 MGTD from Seattle to Vancouver BC or up to mount Rainer. Great video and what an amazing drive. Last summer you guys inspired me to take a family road trip from Texas to your neck of the woods. We saw some amazing sites and lots of memories. Oh yeah, and we took our '95 Volvo 850 wagon with over 500K miles and had zero issues. My family wants to go East this year. I can't wait! I'm a big fan, a meet and greet in the Austin area would be great when you guys come to Texas
My wife and I did pretty much the opposite drive. From Vancouver Island, BC, Canada (through Seattle) to San Francisco. We did it in our 1993 Mitsubishi Delica L300 Super Exceed. Not what you would call a "driver's car", but a perfect car for a road trip.
I took this path going from Bakersfield, CA to Seattle, WA. I went coastal because I5 was covered in ice and snow, and all of Southern Oregon lost power, so going to any coffee shop or gas station was out. But I was able to hit Bandon Dunes to golf. Did this in an Acura Integra GS-R. Had to cut in once I crossed back into Washington, but there were cool roads that took me back to I5 and back to Seattle. This is such a cool roadtrip.
This is what I loved the most about Top Gear. It wasn't the performance tests or the cool cars. It was the adventures they went on with the cars that I enjoyed the most. I loved watching this because the journey you took us on was an entertaining story. One important thing is that you kept the cars as part of the story. Thank you.
Todd's comments about cars "wanting/needing to be driven" is so true. Your cheap sports cars series (and Paul's SERIOUS love of the Boxster) convinced me to finally buy the car I've always wanted: a 2002 Boxster S. I test drove one back when that car was new, but I had young kids then and a Boxster as a daily driver just wasn't practical. I convinced my wife that a 2002 M3 was the more practical choice! But that Boxster was always on my mind. Fast forward to September 2021, when, after watching your series I finally bought a 27K mile car that is absolutely mint--looks and drives as new. While I've already added more miles in the last 5 months than were added in the previous last 12 years, I feel guilty piling up too many miles on such a nice example...so...I'm now I'm doing what you suggested--looking for a cheap, higher miles base 2.5L driver like you guys featured in your series. That one I'd enjoy anytime without worry (at least until something breaks...) LOVE your content and when you get down to Texas, let me show you my favorite roads in the Hill Country!

This was awesome. I have an 88 928 S4 and took it on a just a 250 mile round trip to see my sister. Before I left the gas cap stuck which had never happened. Then I told my sister its been fun but i want to get on the road before it gets dark and cold..because its an old car. She was intrigued with my pop up headlights and wanted to see them. Sure enough, I didnt have low beams but thank goodness for the Porsche Gods...I had high beams.
Brilliant video! I loved every second of it! Buy a car that you love, and love driving it! There is an immeasurable "magic" quality of driving experience and character in cars from this generation (80's - early 90's) that you just can't get in a modern car. I'm so glad that you guys took these cars on this road trip instead of something currently manufactured. I'm up in eastern Canada, but I'm now inspired to take my Toyota MR2 cross continent and drive those roads. 😎👍
Had a 928s exactly like that, just in dark green. Those seats are made for cosseting the human body! The driving position is great, too. The fact that you can spin it even in 3 gear at low speeds makes for a super fun machine. Forget about today's super sticky cars that require you to go at unbelievable speeds just to have some feedback. :) And, yes; it's a money pit. And finding a mechanic who knew how to work on it was a pain, here in northwest Italy. But seeing that timeless styling is bringing back many good memories. How it felt chunky, well planted, and powerful even in fifth gear at 1800rpms. If you can afford it: keep it!

I live in Southern California and have a 370Z. Was a truck driver and been far north in Washington to a paper mill in Port Townsend so I've been through the weather coming and going. Such a beautiful part of our country many will never see. Going to make that trip one day like you guys did. Nice video and keep up the good work!

I rented a mazda3 AWD turbo and drove that coast road north 50 miles from san francisco last month. (I’m from the flattest part of the corn belt). the road was amazing, and while the Mazda was very impressive, I learned that I like old cars better in general. I never would’ve put myself in that situation or have drawn nearly so much insight from it without you guys’ influence! now I can enjoy my AW11 in peace.
I used to live in Northern California and have been to the Avenue of the Giants and Glass Beach by way of the coast so many times. It's really hard to explain to people how sublime the roads can be, both to see and to drive. The craziest part is you can be on a glass smooth ribbon of tarmac running from wine country to the water and be the only car or bike out there. I've since moved to South Texas and been on several drives with the local PCA club and it's really hard to compare...
@@VirtualGuth Just seeing this now. The local roads that are well favored are the "Twisted Sisters" and "Devil's Backbone." Usually take over an hour to get to and frankly don't hold a candle to a random California back road.
Awesome stuff! Guys: have you experienced CA-36 before? the section between Fortuna and Red Bluff. You passed right by the turnoff as you approached Eureka. If not, you must return to CA and do something on this road. I've been all over the USWC, and to me this is the single greatest driving road a sportscar enthusiast can find here. It's 140 miles of curves fast and slow, some really good elevation, and views. Spectacular. Last year Caltrans was doing some improvement work so there were a handful of spots to slow down for flaggers, but hopefully that means it'll be that much better for this year's driving season.
CA-36 is truly one of the top 5 roads in the US. It's Beartooth Highway good. Even better is that it's fairly lightly trafficked. In that respect it's nothing like US-101.
This video is beyond fantastic. Modern & relevant, with strong Top Gear road trip vibes, and a healthy serving of love for cars. A small bit of mechanical issues that are endearing, some funny commentary, and two beautiful cars
You’re in my neck of the woods! My absolute favorite stretches of road and pretty undiscovered relative to the stretches south of San Francisco. Don’t forget to take some of the inland ridge line roads that run parallel to Hwy 1.

I love the mustang rental story. The porsche song 😆. I was working and i took a 45 min break to check the full video. Great vid including the nature. 300zx was my dream car as a teenager. As i saw it during this video i brought back memories. And one neighbour had one porsch like this, but he left the headlight up 24/7🙄.
