This is exactly what I needed, a perfect guide for not only how to pick and bypass these, but the gutting process as well! Some day I hope to be able to open one of these so easily!

This series is already turning into a bit of an eye opener, great work, looking forward to more surprises in the future

Definitely a few surprises!

1 of my favorites to pick when I go through my padlocks. I have noticed a different keyway on 1 I had awhile back but I held on to this 1 because it spells ABUS.
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 7 лет назад
Just the mini Yale style keyway that we see in other Abus locks would be a nice improvement.

Very quickly done! My 72/40 has just the most evil bitting, while yours looks quite flat. So unfair, lol ;-)
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 7 лет назад
Thanks... comparing with different bitting is different. It's one of the reasons I used the point system (and didn't include none removable core locks like the M570 and the 80TI/40). The points are independent of bitting.

The Abus 72/40 comes in many configurations. I have a couple WW keyway 72/40 that are VERY restrictive. Even to .015. of the dozen I have, most of them have anti bypass. They all have serrated key pins and spooled uppers. This has to be the weakest 72/40 I've seen. lol But I guess you gotta go with what you got :) LMK I can send you a WW to compare if you want. Though it might take a week or so to get to you. Great picking, and awesome video as usual!

West Coast Picks Yep yep, I agree with you on the Abus differences between locks. They have several different style keyways as the one I have has the type core that looks like an IC core. with an awfully restricted keyway. And another one with a standard Yale keyway which is more peracentric than this one. Maybe it's a knockoff like a Luie watton Handbag is a beautiful bag but will never be the real deal. lol Awesome pick as always, and thanks for sharing. Cheers!

Well, like you say, this is what I have. I just got a PM from someone offering to send me another variant, so we will probably have an update on this. Thanks.

It should get an honorary point for having a keyway that spells out ABUS. Cute.
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 7 лет назад
I didn't even know that... If I did I would have taken a point away for prioritizing cutesy BS over security! :-)

Well, as Mateusz said, there are two different versions of the Abus 72/40 core, the one you got and a very paracentric one (which does have the flat core holder). I have both versions (well the open keyway one as yours as a 72/30 I got from a friend in America). Both are known to be bypassable, but the other one would have got 3 more points :(. Yeah, I'm known as an Abus fanboy hahaha ;). Still a very nice series, can't wait to see the next one :D.

I'm happy to consider another one if someone sends it to me... after all, I have two keyways for the 1100's in this race.
@pnutdunne81
@pnutdunne81 7 лет назад
redcatimaging I think it would also need a non standard pick, so even more points
@redcatimaging
@redcatimaging 7 лет назад
It's the same tight keyway as the Abus 85/40 (or the 82Ti/70), so yes that might be Flying Locksman :).
@wysmolek
@wysmolek 7 лет назад
I can send you the padlock, but it's still an easy pick (even for me :) ) and it doesn't require super thin pick - 0.55 mm (around 0.022 inch) from multipick has enough room. And I still think that ball bearings here are just for show since they are spring-loaded.
@leeroy144
@leeroy144 2 года назад
They are just loto padlocks though. The bypass comes in handy considering contractors constantly lose their keys.
@NoctisMotus
@NoctisMotus 7 лет назад
A very nice lock for the price. Certainly a fun and challenging pick Allowing the locking mechanism to be bypassed is a rather drastic oversight though.
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 7 лет назад
Yes, the bypass is a big problem. Abus should know better!
@J__C__
@J__C__ 5 лет назад
This looks exactly like the ABUS 72/40 LOTO padlock I just picked up. EXACTLY. I imagine that's what it is and why it's not as secure as most Abus locks.
@leeroy144
@leeroy144 2 года назад
That's exactly what it is. I have a pile of em. Much nicer than the plastic master lock loto locks.
@JessHull
@JessHull 7 лет назад
Oh abus! if you weren't so vain and forced your engineers to make an open keyway thats spells your name maybe you couldn't fly a 747 through some of your locks....

@lockpickinglawyer

A disappointment, but also not bad, for what it is (a LOTO lock)... just don't mistake this for something that provides any level of security!

LockPickingLawyer I already have 3 on order...! they can be easily modified, so, as always... there's a way out!!

I have one that zips with a diamond I don’t know if they all do but I was going to buy another one and try it. I also tried this core in a few other lock bodies to see if higher core spring tension would stop me from zipping it no luck there yet(I suspect the spools are not completely coming into play, maybe I need better bidding in truth I don’t know). On the other hand the bidding says abus in it soo that’s cool.

the Abus should get a point for pin 1 being a small pin

Thanks... the bypass is the real issue. Disappointing.
@wysmolek
@wysmolek 7 лет назад
Funny - in european version keyway is different, pinning is the same and it's also bypassable. Despite having ball bearings I think it's shimable, because after closing the lock with hasp open you can push the balls in, but why to bother if you can bypass it.
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 7 лет назад
Interesting about the shimable ball bearings... I'll have to look into that. Thanks.

Can this lock be picked without special tools? I have one locked to the closed end of a snap hook that also holds my gloves for work and I lost the key.
@monkey_breath
@monkey_breath 7 лет назад
Great pick! but this is kind of weird, i just bought one of these myself, and it does have a paracentric keyway. the core housing is slightly different too, it's a single piece, unlike the 2 piece yours is.
@johnbull8978
@johnbull8978 7 лет назад
Same here. Mine definitely requires a 0.015 pick and I was looking forward to seeing how much quicker LPL could open it than I can :( But alas it's not apples to apples.

LockPickingLawyer sure, i could trade you mine, i've kept it stock, and it only has a little scuffing on the top of the keyway from tensioning it, PM me where to send it to!
