I work as a Locksmith in a prison in Arkansas. The pings on the back side of the lock are there to prevent the screws from backing out from the constant slamming of the cell doors or of the gates that some of these locks are mounted on. The inertia of these massively heavy doors can transmit enough impact against the guts of this kind of lock that it will back the screws out which would cause the lock to fail.

why would the size of the door matter? it's the inertia of the screw itself that would back it out...

I was just going to make the same comment about the peening of the screws on the back of the lock. As for the question about loc-tite, yes it could be but loc-tite and locksmiths don’t tend to go together especially if old school. As for peening and tamper marks scribe makes are normally preferred for that and if truly worried about tampering then a tamper paint/sealant maybe preferably because of its higher visibility.

Hey bill , just wanted to inform you that that is called staking not penning. the intent of staking is not to prevent removal but to keep the screw from backing out under use, kind of like a self locking nut.

Seems like it was build for heavy use. Bet the steel balls significantly reduces wear on both lock and keys. I don't believe the screws were punched to never be removed. Rather they were punched to make sure they didn't work their way by themselves during use. A bit of Loctite would have the same effect tough but a couple of punches may have their advantages.

Nice to know that US prisoners are so securely locked up :D You guys have some of the worlds most brutal prisons and prisoners (many come out worse than they go in) and it seems that the prison industry doesn't even care enough to lock them up properly, pretty shocking... Can't imagine that the same could happen here in Finland, especially when talking about murderers and other violent offenders. We do have somewhat tighter regulations in almost every industry and even our home locks are mostly Abloy Protec locks (almost all locks have been upgraded to this in the last 10 years partly because the insurance companies recommend [or demand] it) so we have a bit higher standards on what constitutes a secure and good lock :)

I assume the locks are on the outside of the doors where the prisoners don't have any access to them. (If they were on the inside then prisoners would have all day long to mess around with them)
@taiwanluthiers
@taiwanluthiers 11 месяцев назад
I assume the master key function is more for access control and institutional needs. If anything these jail locks are easier to pick because the keys are so large, thicker metal, etc. meaning your lock pick can be bigger and stronger, not to mention the parts are larger which is much easier to mess with. Except nobody in jail is going to have a lock pick as institutional controls means such things are hard to come by. Like those lever locks are really easy to pick if you have the correct tools.
@Warutteri
@Warutteri 11 месяцев назад
@@taiwanluthiersYou can make a passable basic lock pick and a turning tool from two paperclips (I know, I've done it, and used them successfully to pick simple locks)... Or any flat piece of metal with a little time and patience to grind it against the floor of your cell to achieve the desired shape for a pick, and for a turning tool you just need to bend a thin piece of flat metal, super simple stuff. When you're in prison all you have is time, so some of that maybe being slightly time consuming isn't a big issue. Prisoners have much bigger and harder to hide contraband in their cells all the time...

This lock doesn't actually have master wafers in it. I know this is an old video, but maybe someone will be interested. Locks that see commercial use should have balanced pin stacks, e.g. Best A format has a stack height of 23 in each chamber. This consists of three pins whose lengths sum to 23 times the depth of a single key cut. Key pins+control pins+driver pins. In the prison lock in the video, the key pins consist of the ball bearings plus the pins above them. As I think Bill mentioned, the ball bearings are intended to reduce pin and key wear. In many pinning kits for multi-shearline locks, certain pin lengths are designated as security pins e.g. all the 6's, 8's, and 10's, and key pins 5-9 have spool elements

The mastering is to allow for different levels of keys. Normal Keys for normal operations Master keys for a supervisor perhaps GrandMaster Key for emergencies ie Riot FYI
@mendaliv
@mendaliv 7 лет назад
Right. Normal probably has access levels split by building area and lock category. Probably one normal key for a single row of cells in a cell block, one normal key for the in/out doors for a cell block, one normal key for maintenance panels and storage closets in a small area. Master key probably is stuff like all the cell doors in a single block, all the in/out doors in a building, or all the maintenance panels or closets in an area. And grandmaster typically stands in for several master keys. I had a relative work in a university's locksmithing office some years ago. They even had great grandmaster keys in some buildings. Even in those, though, the great grandmaster didn't operate any exterior doors.

I know this is an ooollllldd video. But man, those Folger Adams keys bring back memories... Every prison guard in America is all too familiar with those. And the years of back pain that you end up with after carrying 20+ of the fuckers at once for 80 percent of your shift for 30 years... You can't really appreciate how huge they are til you've held one. Heavy Bastards too. BosnianBill must be a fairly large handed gentleman, because I'm telling you. Those keys are a lot bigger in person than it appears to be from this video. Size of an elephants kurac. LoLović

Rune Nilssen asked Why are the locks so big, Well since it's a Mortise style Screw in lock the side that has a "Screw" pin holding the mortise can be a bigger/deeper screw to hold the lock form being turned out, How many times have you seen a 7-11 or some other store with the lockset half turned because the lock pin worked lose be 1 to 1/2 turns.. Enjoy..

since I started watching your videos, I am more and more worried about my front door locks being unsafe hehe. I always thought that 21st century locks were now a lot more sophisticated and picking them would be near impossible...but it shocks me that it's so easy to get in. when are we going to replace this simple pin design to something more complex that the greatest minds in the world can make instead of using these simple mechanisms? is it because it's cheaper to use this design? why don't front door locks be more secure? my life is on the line here.....I lock three doors when I go to bed, my front door, my entrance stair door and my bedroom door.....and I had a look at them, they are all really easy to get in....

Ha, that was a very nice package. Thank you to the generous donor. The SS and Folger Adams moguls have the same keyway. Bill I know this video is older but on the top of this core there is a strip right over the top of the bible, couldn't you just slide that back to reveal the springs and pins/wafers that way? I believe that is there to make rekeying easier and faster but could be wrong. Also just an FYI 16mm and 5/8 are almost the same size just one was a spark plug wrench and the other a normal socket. They cross like 13mm to 1/2" ans 14mm to 9/16th" 19mm to 3/4" 22mm to 7/8th"

easy to stop raking or bumping put a pin in forth chamber at shear line. the only pin that way. then make last pin a number 1 and 3rd pin number 1 and so on. so that's a number 1-then 1pin at line 1-5-1 .high low high low high. bump key pushes 4th pin above line no entry.

im just getting started on this kind of stuff, but does it make any sense at all to have split top pins? unless that was the only way to get it that heavily mastered, which still seems like a horrible idea on a lock in a jail.

Those locks are ridiculous. Thank you to who ever sent them, very kind of you to share with all of us. Bill do you happen to have a picture of the lock that the large key goes to? Also I just can't believe they master those locks up like that, shouldn't they know better?

Not really. Prisoners aren't gonna have access anyway. They'll lockpick right back into a cell if they do.
